Tech investor, Victor Asemota debunks Tinubu’s claim of bringing ECONET to Nigeria He also revealed that “Econet was supposed to bring 40% of the license money and the technical know-how. We had the equity agreement as a shareholder, and technical services agreement as operator of the license. That 40% never came. It was excuse after excuse. We finally had to go back to the states. “The initial structure we had proposed was for the licensed entity, Econet Wireless Nigeria (EWN) owned by FINL and the technical partner to own 60% of the operating entity Econet Wireless Mobile (EWM) and the remaining 40% coming into that entity from states like Delta and AKSG.” Asemota revealed that when the 40% from the operator wasn’t coming and other shareholders were leveraged to the hilt, state governments were allowed in to buy secondaries from existing shareholders who had covered the initial $285m license fee they didn’t bargain for, which caused the Shareholders approached states. That was the extent of the Lagos State involvement in the deal. His relative was the state governor and it made it easier for OANDO to convince them. Tinubu didn't even commit to Cybertel initially. Delta State and Oceanic saved ECONET. David Edevbie saved us all. — Osaretin Victor Asemota (@asemota) May 31, 2022 He said OANDO was also a shareholder, stating that Wale Tinubu (Oando founder) got Lagos State to buy their secondaries and come in. “That was the extent of the Lagos State involvement in the deal. His relative was the state governor, and it made it easier for OANDO to convince them. Tinubu didn’t even commit to Cybertel initially. Delta State and Oceanic saved ECONET. David Edevbie Disagreeing with Tinubu’s claim, Victor Asemota, who also worked at Econet during its early days gave his account of how Econet Wireless came into Nigeria. “Many of the new state governors were in town and came for the party. He got five of them into his bedroom and pitched a company called ‘CyberTel’, which was supposed to bid for a GSM license “Only Delta State was very keen on it. The others told us that they would get back. Cybertel merged into the consortium called First Independent Networks Limited, which was started by Bolaji Balogun and his team at City Securities Limited. It was a harrowing period”. He added that he had to travel to Delta and Akwa Ibom to ensure the commitment of the state as FINL was supposed to hold 60% of the license holding company, and 40% went to the foreign partner. “We later selected a small company from Zimbabwe called Econet because we felt it was easier,” he said. Speaking at the just concluded screening of presidential aspirants of the All Progressive Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former governor of Lagos State and party founder, claims to have played a role in building the telecoms industry in Nigeria by bringing Econet Wireless (now Airtel) to Nigeria. However, tech investor, Victor Asemota has moved to debunk Tinubu’s claim, stating that Lagos State was only involved in its founding through the acquisition of secondary shares after much deliberations had taken place. According to Asemota Tinubu didn’t even commit to Cybertel (Econet’s founding trading name in Nigeria) initially. until after Delta State, Oceanic and David Edevbie did the major work. What Tinubu said at the screening Highlighting his contribution to the development of the telecoms industry, Bola Ahmed Tinubu said “There are three highways in the development of a nation. If you have gas or supplying diesel, electricity transmission is also a highway and communication. “I could remember that I brought Eron to this nation. Telecommunication is now a success today in Nigeria. I brought Econet. I helped them; they now want to adopt 5G; we started it. “Nigeria is rich. The essence of our livelihood must be placed on short-term and medium-term values. They must produce values for us,” He also revealed that “Econet was supposed to bring 40% of the license money and the technical know-how. Lagos, Ogun account for N3.2tr of Nigeria’s N3.7tr production output in H2 2021 By Femi Adekoya 27 May 2022 | 4:21 am (Photo by Florian PLAUCHEUR / AFP) With a combined manufacturing production value of N3.2 trillion in the second half of 2021, Lagos and Ogun industrial zones are responsible for 86 per cent of manufactured goods consumed in the country and exported. According to the latest data released by the Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN), of the N3.73 trillion worth of goods produced across 14 industrial zones nationwide, Lagos (Ikeja and Apapa) and Ogun zones accounted for the bulk of locally produced goods, while the remaining 12 zones recorded production value of N526 billion. This further reinforces the claim that Lagos and Ogun remain the industrial hubs of the nation. Specifically, in Lagos, the Ikeja zone recorded a production value of N1.81 trillion while the Apap zone’s value dropped to N526.9 billion. Ogun industrial zone produced goods worth N867.3 billion in the second half of the year. Production value in the manufacturing sector totaled N7.03 trillion in 2021 as against N4.42 trillion recorded in 2020. According to MAN, the increase in the manufacturing production value in the second half of 2021 was associated with the increase in cement production due to the new BUA cement factory in Sokoto; the African Glass new factory that produces glass products; and activities of the five newly established paper mills that recycle waste paper into carton. Notwithstanding the improved performance of the manufacturing sector during the year, MAN, however noted that the performance is still far beyond its potential growth and contribution to national output due to almost innumerable challenges confronting the sector. “Following direct feedback from manufacturers, we recommend first and foremost that the government should create plausible incentives for investment in the development of raw materials locally through the backward integration and resource-based industrialization initiatives. “We recognise an urgent need for investment and production of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) in the country; this should be adequately incentivized to encourage significant private investments,” MAN added. Although MAN claimed electricity supply from the national grid had marginally improved since 2019 as indicated by the average daily electricity supply and outage, the local producers stated that electricity supply from the grid had persistently been inadequate, compelling manufacturers to invest heavily in alternative energy sources to sustain uninterrupted production activity. While some operators have invested in diesel generating plants, some others are utilizing gas plants. They lamented that costs associated with these plants are further increased by expenditure on spare parts and other energy management apparatuses such as stabilizers, UPSs, and Inverters. “Unfortunately, the cumulative expenditure on these alternative energy sources and the high tariff associated with supplies from the national grids majorly account for the high cost of production in the sector, with the share of energy standing at a colossal 40 percent”, it added. Based on identified circumstances, MAN said expenditure on alternative energy sources in the manufacturing sector stood at N45.04 billion in the second half of 2021 as against N57.75 billion recorded in the corresponding half of 2020; thus, indicating N12.71 billion or 22 percent declined over the period. However, the figure increased by N12.86 billion when compared with N32.18 billion recorded in the preceding half. Expenditure on alternative energy sources stood at N77.22 billion in 2021 as against 81.91 billion recorded in 2020. The decline in expenditure on alternative energy sources in 2021 was ascribed to the marginal improvement in the national electricity supply over the period. Just in: Buhari relieves Godwin Emefiele of his job as CBN governor By News Editor May 25, 2022 Emefiele President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele from his job, according to Intel region. It was revealed that he may have been sacked in the early hours of Wednesday May 25. His sack may not be unconnected to his ambition to succeed Buhari at the end of his tenure in 2023. While there is nothing wrong with being ambitious with a presidential dream, Emefiele however flouted so many laws by declaring his interest to occupy the highest seat of power as a political appointee and wanted to remain as CBN governor without resigning his position to pursue his ambition. After a public outcry by well meaning Nigerians, calling for his resignation shortly after a group of some faceless farmers purchased the N100m form of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for him and feigning ignorance of it, Emefiele would later approach a Federal High Court in Abuja to prevent the country’s electoral body Independent National Electoral Commission and the board of CBN rom disqualifying him from running for president. Having failed to get the court to give judgment in his favour, Emefiele approached a Delta State High Court that eventually granted him his wish. But in a curious twist, he withdrew the suit he filed against INEC and the Attorney-General of the Federation. His exact reasons for withdrawing the suit remain unclear, but his counsel however explained that he prayed the court to discontinue the suit and make an order striking it out. Buhari in response to the expression of interest by his appointees had ordered the resignation of every one of his cabinet members interested in vying for political offices in 2023. Some of his appointees obeyed the order, many including the Godwin Emefiele failed to resign. Some who put in their resignation letters, withdrew them. https://thestreetjournal.org/just-in-buhari-relieves-godwin-emefiele-of-his-job-as-cbn-governor/
