Am impressed by your post. But first, I know it is still dry up there. Quite evident from your soil conditions; how do you provide moisture?

Is there any form of mechanization in place to enable you cultivate more land area with huge reduction in drudgery?

Agriculture actually is a Science and without the mastery of the Science and Tech in it, may just be a futile fantasy. ( There maybe no difference btw you and our Parents).

Your Onions and Cabbage need specific Agro-inputs to have a successful productivity statistics. Have you taken care of these? So you don't run away next season?

I encourage you to join this group for technical and capacity building support: FARA( Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa).

By the way, I hope you have sold your onions and cabbage before going into this cultivation? They say, find the buyer before you produce.

Sorry Sir, may I add more? Your land preparation method is not quite encouraging. It seems u swept the surface with APC brooms. (lol.). That was not necessary.

You need debris, dead leaves and twigs to provide much needed organic matter and to also retain moisture from your wetting effort in addition to keeping weeds away.

Wow it's hot in here! Good thing I finally have some Updates from my practical experience. My total yield was about 13.5 tons giving about 1.9 tons per hectare. This is way below the mark of 3 tons per hectare I expected.

There are a few reasons I identified for this. Some of the corn was eaten by pests, some were stolen and few plants did not produce healthy cobs.

As for the conversions and standard yields, I finally have a grip of it. The following are Given facts:
1. one acre is 0.404 hectares.
2. 1 hectare will contain 2.47 times the maize in one acre if planted uniformly.
3. Maize yield can range from as low as less than 1 ton per hectare in Africa to over 20 tons per hectare in some parts of USA. On the average, Chile / USA produce at about 11 tons/ha, with Nigeria at 2tons/ha.
4. In terms of ears of corn per hectare, a representative figure is difficult to mention but a yield of 75,000 ears per hectare can be considered as excellent production in the leading countries.

I am happy to have my own experience and willing to learn more. It is quite clear that making an investment decision based on balloon internet figures can ruin you.

Hi guys I am new in this poultry business and I pretty much have all the info I need except for the feeding part and vaccines. My target is 2000 day old layers birds which I will be booking soon. However the feeding cost will throw me out of budget. I was looking at commercial brand of feed vs locally milled feed and I still don't get it. Can any good and experienced nairalander assist me in breaking down the cost to feed 2000 layer birds from day old to 8 weeks both commercial and local ? Thanks

Sure you are feeding the birds too much and they may develop fats. on a daily basis, egg laying birds should consume an average of .125 grams.

hello house, my friend have abt 100 2wks old broiler chicks, they have been vaccinated against gumboro at 1 wk. However in d past 4 days, a chick:s neck will become twisted i.e it's beak will start pointin sideways n after sometime it will die.
