agaugust: old and second hand equipment like Cobra, VBL, BTR-3U, ATR-42 Surveyor, PL-9C missiles, Bofors Artillery, Sandcat MRAP, Stealth warships Type 056, Shaldag super gun boats, spy satellites, spy balloons, Mi-35 Hind....Lol !!!

.
It doesnt matter, but still those are limited firepower which does not intimidate us.

agaugust: go back to the NAF vs SAN combat simulation on page 806...... https://www.nairaland.com/415620/strongest-military-africa/806

.
My friend, i will recommend you to any airforce training college and ask if is adviceable to attack warships fully loaded with SAM's using fighter jets. Your fighter jets will soon glow the skies as if is new year festival. Even the most experienced US Airforce pilots will never risk such a stu.pid approach. Most modern warships are as well equipped with electronic warfare defence system which interfer with the operation of jets.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 6:42pm On Jan 03, 2014
agaugust: Nigeria has anti-submarine warships and helicopters (Lynx now being upgraded).

Nigeria has Aradu with Otomat missiles, stealth warships are NOT invisible, they only look smaller, but nigerian ATR-42 mighty Surveyor aircraft will fish them out like sardines in the water enter a fisherman's net.

Nigerian air force jet fighters will sink all south african stealth warships because you have no air cover 5,000 km away from home.

nigeria does not even need ship to ship combat in ivory coast. our air power is more than enough. your submarines will run out of fuel if they submerge for more than 48 hours, and your naval base for refueling is 5,000 km away at home.

diesel submarines like yours have very very short range when submerged, and when they surface or snorkel, enemy aircraft will attack and destroy them very easily because submarines have no defence against enemy aircraft.

west africa is too far away from southern africa, your submarine is a ZERO threat to nigeria. sorry o !

.
It shows and proves that you know nothing about military. Unless your pilots want to risk their early graves they can challenge stealth warships. Do you know that it is not easy for any plane to manuevre IR missiles? Those missiles when they kick out they come to you with a speed of a lightning and your plane will glow the sky as if is a new year festival.

Bahahahahahaha!! This is really stu.pid.

agaugust: Ranking is based on equipment, manpower, war history/battlefield experience/combat records, and economy/finance.

Ethiopia is better than South Africa in all those points except economy/finance, but they have a big defence budget to focus on army and air force because they have no navy. South African navy had to borrow money from a bank to buy submarines, your navy alone is eating up your defence budget really bad.

that is where Ethiopia saves money and spends on its huge army with thousands of anti-tank guided missiles.

South Africa wont last long fighting Ethiopia, they will wipe out your armoured vehicles and surround your tiny army within some days.

the weak point of South African military is that your tiny, inexperienced, fat, over-paid, illiterate, and cowardly army that has never won any war

.
Ethiopia can never challenge SA because of financial implications of the war between two countries. We have more money than Ethiopia and that will only cripple them financially. Eventually, Ethiopia will be defeated.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 5:34pm On Jan 03, 2014
agaugust: You should have waited there and let NNS Thunder strike your soweto warship.

The only powerful navy in ECOWAS is nigeria's and that is what south africa was truly afraid of in Ivory Coast.

.
Nigeria can never challenge SA in a battle. We are more equipped than Nigeria and that is a fact. Nigeria uses old equipments which were either decommissioned or second hand material.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 5:29pm On Jan 03, 2014
agaugust: Factors which make South Africa to become the 5th most powerful military in Africa.

1. Budget spent mostly on soldiers fat monthly salary (Submarines purchased on credit with bank loans)
2. Small force that cannot handle modern equipment effectively (Only 6 qualified Gripen jet pilots to fly 26 Gripen jets)
3. Low fighting spirit and determination to sacrifice their lives in war due to fat monthly salary, they want to enjoy life with their family.
4. Limited firepower (Only 46 G6 Rhino artillery, only 25 missiles for 26 Gripen jets, only 17 Exocet missiles instead of the standard 32 missiles)
5. Poor independence of defence industry, DENEL weapons depend on European Jets, Ships, and Vehicles to launch its missiles and bombs.

With all the above not addressed, South Africa remains the 5th most powerful military in africa but sharing the same 5th position with Sudan, Uganda and Morocco.

.
1. The US, UK and Russia pay fat salaries to their soldiers, so is there anything wrong with that. Nigeria is one of the countries which pay their soldiers meagre salaries with poor benefits.

2. South Africa has 8 Griffin Instructors and that does not mean their strength is 8, since we have many pilots who can fly and operate griffins.

3. Denel is the largest arms manufacturer on the continent. FACT!!! No arms industry in Naai-jeria can match it.

4. SA soldiers are trained well to operate Denel products.

NaijaPikinGidi: I made the comment below, and you end up proving me right:

"running is not an option, our soldiers are on the ground" ... Yet the same SANDF soldiers usenbolted from their base, abandoning weapons and military vehicles like antelopes running from a hungry lion. Zuma was pressured to withdraw troops ... is now your version for today, which is different from AndrewZA's version, FighterPilot's, MsauZA's previous versions.

The sooner you guys begin to talk straight we will continue to see and hear stupidity from you all.
Those two Geckos which were initially used by CAR government troops which were trained by SA battallion is far more cheaper than two gunships you lost at the hands of Islamic insurgents, Boko Haram.

What about APC's and IFV's they have hijacked from your Army, yet the humiliation suffered by your men causes them to remain mum about everything.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 8:58am On Jan 03, 2014
NaijaPikinGidi: In other words, are you suggesting SA is a world superpower? grin grin grin
Did you see South Africa in that statement?
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m):
NaijaPikinGidi: You mean a decision was taken by the so called ECCAS that SANDF must run away hard and fast in the battle with SELEKA? No wonder your President Zuma was building himself a bunker at Nkandla so he would be the last South African alive -- the very day SELEKA begins to hunt for the CIC of the SANDF. You all ran abandoning mission and equipment ... It's on record.
We respect regional organisations and cannot act against their decision, same as when ECOWAS demanded that our warship should back off from Ivory Coast.

Moreover, only 200 SA soldiers does not equate to all 74000 SANDF members + 30000 reserves.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 8:14am On Jan 03, 2014
agaugust: No you wont be watching nigerian army artillery firing, south african army would be running back home like you did under fire from seleka grin
South Africa never ran back home from CAR, it was a decision which was taken by an extraordinary summit of central African states (ECCAS) held at Chad that SA troops should be withdrawn from CAR. Our president was ready to reinfonce SA troops in CAR by deploying over 2000 soldiers. We will never run away, but we will fight your soldiers until they raise a white flag like what SELEKA has done.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 8:01am On Jan 03, 2014
World superpowers pay good salaries and they all have advanced defence industries.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 7:57am On Jan 03, 2014
agaugust: Nigeria is more than what you know. Nigerdock Shipbuilding Yard in Lagos is also fully equipped to repair Artillery guns, you didnt know that, I posted that here months ago.
Before there is need to replace an artillery gun barrel, thousands of shells would have been fired over time.
By the time Nigeria needs to replace or repair barrels of our 660 artillery guns at Nigerdock, South African army would have been deleted with about 1 million shells fired on your tiny 50,000 man army of glorified ANC bushmen hunters
.
You are speaking as if South Africans would just be folding their arms watching at you haplessly.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m): 7:23am On Jan 03, 2014
agaugust: Ethiopia has a much smaller and less advanced defence industry compared to Nigeria, yet Ethiopia is ranked above South Africa in military power

Did you see the new made in Nigeria Gulma drone ? It is world class for its category/type.

.
Gulma is not a killer drone and it remains harmless.

Ethiopia, does not worry about other things such as education, infrastructure, Health, Social services, etc. They compromise large portion of their budget on military.
Foreign AffairsRe: Who Has The Strongest Military In Africa? by FighterPilot(m):
agaugust: If the South Africans accept that the strongest military in Africa is.... Egypt first, Nigeria second..we can then close this thread

.
You know well that Nigeria is not the second most powerful military in Africa.

Factors which makes Nigeria not to become the second most powerful military in Africa.

1. Budget
2. Large force which is poorly equipped
3. Low morale as a result of poor salaries and benefits. No soldier can risk to die if his family stand to gain nothing.
4. Limited firepower
5. Poor defence industry.

With all of the above unaddressed, Nigeria cannot claim to be the second most powerful military in Africa.
PoliticsRe: Awolowo Was Greater Than Mandela, – Odia Ofeimun Says by FighterPilot(m): 1:59pm On Jan 02, 2014
pelumiakinboye: THE PUNCH NEWSPAPER’S report has it that Writer and poet, Odia Ofeimun, has rated the late Premier of the old Western Region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, above late former South African President, Nelson Mandela.

In an interview with Sahara TV, the writer, poet & social critique said late premier of the old Western region, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was a greater man than South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, Dr. Nelson Mandela.

I am too much of an Awolowo man not to see that the process of moving into independence in South Africa and in Nigeria followed exactly the same pattern. It was based on a negotiated settlement. The liberation struggle did not create the end of apartheid. It was a negotiation and Nigerians negotiated exactly the way Mandela negotiated.

“You can hype it if you like, but the pattern was exactly the same. You move from one meeting to the other, discussing politics and economics, and they successfully convinced Mandela to buy the pig in a poke of an economy and they also successfully succeeded in convincing Nigerians to buy the pig in a poke of an economy.

“The only man in Nigeria, who stood up against it, was (Obafemi) Awolowo. He was quickly jailed and all his men scattered across the prisons in Nigeria. Some driven abroad and the educational system that he had put in place was smashed.” Ofeimun said

“People talk about Mandela’s capacity to put various classes (of people) together as theory, but Awolowo ironed it out very clearly, why you don’t need a class struggle, in order to create a society in which all children can go to school; in which everybody can get a job, and in which old age pensions will be paid to people.

“It is not just love and I want to emphasise that. Those who criticise Awolowo’s socialism for wanting in love are obviously basing their argument on his claim that a government should be like a sun that shines on all equally. If it is about a theory of how to bring the people together on the African continent, none is as good as the Awolowo’s and I’m not trying to pretend.

“Bring all their writings, fine phrases, alright, but reduce them to economic terms, and I can tell you that there is only one man who rivals Awolowo in this respect and that is Nkrumah. Unfortunately unlike Awolowo, Nkrumah did not believe in either a democratic or a federal theory. If you want to save Africa, you need those two.”

Snipers can effective like taking out enemy's most effective and feared Commander.
This wont still end todays wars. This is not the 40's, most Generals command from Fortified Bunkers, view the battle field electronically and move about in Armored vehicles.
300 m is not a stand off distance a normal assault rifle can hit targets at 300mm.
It is a stand off distance for someone who cannot be seen and wont be seen.Simply put Snipers don't fight, they kill. That is why soldiers hate them.Your snipers worked in a low-medium threat environment.
Without reccon missions by SANDF special forces+Oryx helicopters the fight would've been tough.
No Argument there but, recon does not involve engaging the enemy. = low threat environment.
FIB? I thought you said Tanzania did.
Tanzania led FIB (force intervention brigade)
You clearly have no idea where the battles took place and who was doing the fighting.
Mention one town captured and held by SANDF in Congo.
Answer this: who trained Colonel Mamadou, the men who was commanding FADRC.
This question has no meaning.

To summarise your soldiers were never engaged in a high environment,That is why you had zero casualties. You were involved in low threat stand-off engagement with the enemy. Nobody will take you seriously if you make the claim that you engaged an army in a war(direct engagement) capturing key cities and suffering ZERO deaths.
Let me give you and example of direct engagement/high threat environment. (SANDF vs SELECA.)
What about Malawi? You are talking rub.bish. SA is the longest serving peace enforcement brigade in DRC and why did the rebels asked SA to pull out if they did not pose any challenge to M23?

NaijaPikinGidi: So how important was the M23 figure allegedly killed by the said SANDF sniper? It could have been an innocent passerby wrongly hit by a stray bullet from your cowardly soldiers.

In the case of Shekau, ( and with the NA steadily dispatching more and more terrorists to the world beyond), it's interesting to see that you have tacitly come to terms with fact that Shekau is now fighting with his fallen comrades to secure even a single virgin as promised by Allah. cool
He was an officer, very influencial among the group.

Cuba were supplied with weapons and equipments by Russia which also provided personnel. I wonder if it were Nigeria, would it have been able to overcome all those challenges?

drag_on: Do you know snipers were considered cowards not long ago? of course that is another debate. The job of a sniper is to remain UNSEEN shoot and scoot/ reconnaissance. That is not going to end wars quickly, as you said, the towns were taken by FARDC/FIB. 300 meters is indeed standoff if the person is hiding/ camouflaged so as not to be seen(sniper).Do you think you would be alive as a regular soldier 300 meters from an enemy base?
Snypers only pick their target from the distance, which in most cases is a very important figure among the troublesome group. In the case of BH they could have aimed 4 Shekau and other leader group among insugents. Remember, the body has little to do when the head has been cut.

Who said Tanzania led the forces? It was the Congolese Army with Front-line help from the Tanzanians.you guys did mortar, sniper and re-con work, with the occasional launch of your choppers.
What you are insinuating are lies. All of over 200 SA cannot flock on mortars et al alone. Many, if not all have physically walked on foot to attack the enermy.

Weakness successfully hidden. But only to the ignorant
South Africa had never fled from CAR, they were ready to bold their force in CAR by deploying more troops, but the extraodinary summit of Central African States which invited Zuma at N'Djamena in Chad, took decision to force SA troops out of CAR. Had it not been that decision we would have been occupying CAR territory by now.

http://www.mg.co.za/article/1995-12-15-how-we-blew-up-koeberg-and-escaped-on-a-bicycle[/size]

South Africa was bombed on home soil and ANC terrorists over-ran your Koelberg Nuclear Power Station, and they escaped on a bicycle, while the whole south african military was running around like rabbits on home soil defeated by ANC terrorists riding ordinary bicycles.

so pull another one now tongue

.
Two young white South Africans who were against the Apartheid government bombed Koeberg with only just minor damages and not the MK. Koeberg is a powerstation and not a maximum security area. The MK has tried to bomb many targets during apartheid, but none of them could ever be successful and impact a serious damage.

Apartheid forces were feared to the core and they were very skilled at shoot to kill.
