agaugust: as i said, CIA factbook is used for academic research resource in america, and is reliable if mathematical figures that we can compare with other sources is involved. when it comes to human judgement that can be biased, CIA will write what they wish to write in favour of america and against america's enemies.
i read the nigerian data you asked me to read. i agree with a lot of it, but the poverty rate is wrong at 70%, wikipedia says 45%. world bank refused to agree with nigerian newspapers and national bureau of statistics NBS that quoted 60% poverty rate, for reason of NO RELIABLE DATA AVAILABLE ON NIGERIAN POVERTY RATE, so where did CIA get 70% when CIA says even 60% is wrong and over-estimated ?
neutral opinion polls in nigeria also disagrees. http://allafrica.com/stories/201305160619.html
N.O.I. Polls Limited, Nigeria's leading opinion polling and research organisation, recently released a report, which focused on an age-long myth on the country's threshold of poverty, against the global standard of $1per day. Abimbola Akosile examines the findings
The issue is simple. It is not whether there is poverty in Nigeria or not. And it is not whether majority of the country's 160 million citizens are poor or not. Enough statistics have shown that already.
The question here is how relative poverty is among the citizens, with focus on the amount spent on food daily, in comparison with the global standard or threshold of $1 or N160 a day.
It is easy for a self-styled 'poor' man in Nigeria to spend up to and even more than N300 on a meal in a day, and to eat two of such meals in 24 hours that is about $4 a day on food. It is equally easy, according to analysts, for a poor man to eat a meal of less than N150 just once in a day. In a simple way, poverty is relative, based on the subject, or in this case, the citizen.
i made the post below about two weeks ago.
CIA factbook requires that we read it with our minds free to think, how does a report remove Russia and China from the list of developed countries and replace them with South Africa and Turkey ? even in my primary/elementary school days i wont believe that. Russia was in space orbit even before America !
i rest my case. everyone is free to believe what the wish. no quarrel bro. peace and harmony.
https://worldpeace.org.au/images/stickerPeaceNowww.jpg Well, World Factbook can never be perfect, but in most cases its findings are almost close to the truth unlike other sources which update after years. I hope that's one of the reason is used by many academics |

agaugust: there are slums in america, russia, china, nigeria, south africa, britain, etc. we all know that. only few countries have no slums, i guess maybe Switzerland, UAE/Dubai as capital, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Singapore, etc.
i did my research before i raised objection...
Poverty rates : Russia 13%, China 13%, America/USA 15%, South Africa 50%.
source, a neutral private sector research NGO that helped fortune 500 : http://www.indexmundi.com/g/r.aspx?v=69
russia and china have less poverty than america and south africa.
no honest person will agree with you that south africa is more industrialized than russia and china.
source : everybody knows the truth, dont look for weblink.
only you is making that CIA factbook a list of final authority, other south africans like @DictatorZAR are honest enough to reject it.
go to a world forum and speak in public, say that Russia and China are NOT developed countries but South Africa is developed. try it bro ! Objection!! The level of poverty in SA is 32%, but it is still high though. The organisation with the weblink above also rely on CIA world factbook for information with outdated information. That's why I saw the need to visit the factbook directly because it is updated time to time. IMF and World Bank also I have just confirmed it with my friend, they also rely heavily on the The World Factbook for info. This book you can buy it over the counter at the book store, same as Forbes Mag. |

agaugust: i have dual nigerian and american citizenship.
CIA factbook is accepted in america as resource for academic research, but many americans who are intelligent dont trust every information in it. a lot is true when verifiable mathematical figures/data are involved, but some of it is false, biased, and misleading when human judgement of the writer is involved.
i will not be mentally enslaved by america because they gave me american citizenship. Russia and China are developed countries, no american CIA report will brainwash me with a factbook and remove that truth from my brain.
if you are america's enemy they will paint you with the colour of a dog or goat. thats what CIA does to Russia and China. I will advice you to cease your citizenship with America because it aint doing you any good. You are living in America yet you are discrediting their organisations, simply because their findings have upgraded the status of your rival. No country is perfect, poverty exist everywhere. I saw it right there in America and many vagrants in Harlem. Who would have thought that there were no such things in the Giant America. |

One thing that I like about us SA is that when we get poor service delivery we take it to the street. When we see our roads are bad, we take it to the street. When we see that our schools are bad we take it to the street and picket until the government address the issue. When our sewage blocks, we chant revolutionary songs to our authorities. That's who we are, it is part of our DNA. That spirit is in MANDELA and so it is in us. Every South African is a revolutionary fighter. |

the same factors you listed above are very similar to what the IMF and UNDP used to rank DEVELOPED countries.
i quote below :
"The Human Development Index (HDI) is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education, standards of living, and quality of life for countries worldwide. It is a standard means of measuring well-being, especially child welfare. It is used to distinguish whether the country is a developed, a developing or an underdeveloped country, and also to measure the impact of economic policies on quality of life. The index was developed in 1990 by Pakistani economist Mahbub ul Haq[3] and Indian economist Amartya Sen."
weblink source : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index
....and after using the same factors to rank countries, south africa is still NOT on the list of top 47 developed nations of the world.
so why did CIA remove Russia and China from the list ? is south african development better than that of Russia and China?
yes i know the difference between advanced and developed countries, but what factors/indexes/indices did CIA use for their ranking ? they did not specify, so how do we judge ? why did CIA remove american 'enemy' Russia and China from the list and put Turkey the american ally/friend that has US military bases in europe ?
CIA is a controversial agency that labels some countries as friend and others as enemy. IMF and UNDP are more reliable.
that CIA list is a personal 'wish' list of some unknown analysts somewhere. we all know that south africa is a balanced country in terms of development and the most industrialized in africa, but fails on HDI because of high poverty rate, the worlds recognized economists say you CANNOT be a developed country and have a persistent poverty level of 1 out of every 3 people in your country, its a world standard, i dont see anybody competent enough to change this standard principle.

South Africa loses its ‘War on Poverty’
By Patrick Bond, Durban August 6, 2010 – Shortly before Pretoria’s presidential power change from Thabo Mbeki to Jacob Zuma two years ago, the South African state announced its War on Poverty. What news from the front, in the immediate wake of World Cup host duties that showed observers how very pleasant life is for the rich and middle class here?
We don’t know, because the War on Poverty is one of the most clandestine operations in South African history, with status reports kept confidential by a floundering army in rapid retreat from the poor, who are estimated at half the society.
Initially the War on Poverty appeared as a major national project. Early hubris characterised the war, as happens in most, with victory claimed even before Mbeki officially launched it in his February 2008 State of the Nation speech.
weblink source http://links.org.au/taxonomy/term/36?page=5 By the way I really miss that old SA. The ANC has done much to change such conditions. The only government in the world that builds free houses for its citizens. I thought you were an American because I really wanted to show you some pics of slums right in America. Since now you admit your Nigerian citizenship, I prefer not to paint Nigeria in black simply because I would be betraying my honour. |

agaugust: my argument defeats yours on technical grounds and logic. if CIA factbook is a universal standard in south african universities for global economics/finance, it is NOT so all over the world especially in those group of developed countries who dont allow america to kick them around.
we nigerian graduates have traveled to europe and america to earn first class university degrees in the same class/course where the white students made second class degrees. many nigerian students make GPA of A while the americans make a C in the same classroom.
south african graduates need to travel outside soweto and learn from the other developed parts of the world where people have used education to free their minds from colonization of america. Have you finally ceased to become an American citizen now? I thought you were an American. |

agaugust: i dont care what you say, my thinking/analysis alone shows the public that i have a good university education. i have seen post graduate students defeat professors in argument with facts and research on campus. nobody is perfect in knowledge. i can challenge anybody's claims if i have logical argument with facts, i dont care who has a Phd above my MBA.
i have not met any professor that says CIA factbook is superior to United Nations published reports on world economy. UN has an office in every country of the world. does CIA have an office in every country of the world to capture, verify and validate, process data as required for credible academic or organizational research reports ? do i sound like a fake MBA ? if you know what an MBA really is.
are you aware i posted here some weeks ago that world bank refused to accept published reports of nigeria,s poverty level at 60% ? world bank said...no reliable data collected/verified is available to conclude nigeria's poverty level, so the world bank decided to shut up. that is what we call information credibility.
i live in the world of truth that does not favour your argument. why should i swallow a CIA report when i know it is biased ? let CIA list Russia and China as developed countries and i will believe their report.
any university professor that agrees with CIA report saying Russia and China are NOT as developed as South Africa, is a professor overdue for retirement and redeployment to teach in a primary/elementary schools. In this case I concur with what Ndubuisi asserted that before you can ever think of buying Submarines, rather vote for that allocation to build better internationally recognised universities with foreign lectures who will make sure that what you are being taught is in line with what other students across the world are learning. Submarines, modern weapons manufacturing and third generation fighters are not toys, because they need graduates of international education standard to control. He has clearly seen that gap. |

The very CIA reports are used by Universities across the world. Being MBA graduate from America you should know that, or perhaps should I say that you been lying to us all this while. CIA SAYS
the top group in the hierarchy of developed countries (DCs), former USSR/Eastern Europe (former USSR/EE), and less developed countries (LDCs); includes the market-oriented economies of the mainly democratic nations in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Bermuda, Israel, South Africa, and the European ministates; also known as the First World, high-income countries, the North, industrial countries; generally have a per capita GDP in excess of $15,000 although four OECD countries and South Africa have figures well under $15,000
....and eight of the excluded OPEC countries have figures of more than $20,000; the DCs include: Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holy See, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, NZ, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UK, US;
.... note - similar to the new International Monetary Fund (IMF) term "advanced economies" that adds Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan but drops Malta, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey.
https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/appendix/appendix-b.html
QUESTION MARK ?
my understanding is very clear, and my point is that CIA includes south africa despite the fact that it does NOT meet the standard criteria of per capita GDP above $15,000 so why does CIA include it on the list with per capita GDP $9,600?
IMF did not drop south africa for membership reason, because 2012 updated IMF membership list shows that South Africa is a member of IMF and so is Turkey, Mexico, but they were all dropped from the top 47 advanced countries list updated march 2013, south africa is NOT on the list. IMF standard HDI is 0.8 but south africa scores 0.6 and thats why it is dropped by IMF.
IMF MEMBERS LIST INCLUDES SOUTH AFRICA AS MEMBER OF IMF GENERALLY, BUT NOT AN ADVANCED COUNTRY AT MARCH 2013
list of IMF members 2012 updated
http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/memdir/memdate.htm
UNDP list of all countries of the world in order of being "advanced" ranks south africa in 121 position below as botswana leads in africa.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_Human_Development_Index
i agree that in africa, south africa is the most industrialized nation, no doubt. heavy industries due to european and american companies that set up huge factories in south africa for over 100 years. the point where south africa drops is likely because of poverty level of 35% of population, same reason drops nigeria to 153 position with poverty level 45%. Your analysis is uncalled for, many economists from SA who were invited in various TV stations did that part already. GDP per capita is not always what determines the graduation of one country to the developed state, included are conditions of infrastructure as well, life expectancy and others. Excellent health facilities, Industrialisation, level of literacy, rapid urbanisation, middle-income, level of poverty, city transportation and overall excellent city infrastructures are also some of the factors which qualify the country to graduate. One economist also noted that there is no much of a difference between what you find in developed countries and SA. Note: there is a difference between advanced economies and developed countries. A country can however be classified as developed, but its economy struggle to make the ends meet. Typical examples are Spain and Sweden. |

yeboyes: Here are some posts i made another topic in regards to the failure of the past and present Nigerian Government. They are relevant to this topic, please spread the word. The best way to educate our people is to show them what they are missing.Nigeria is at least 5 times richer than South Africa ,yet we get less than 5% of the Good governance and Infrastructure South Africans get. Please read the posts below and verify them, this is why Nigerian are flocking to South Africa and other countries everyday:
The sad thing about Nigeria is that when these so called projects take place , presidents and Governors are always laying foundation and smiling for the camera but nothing gets done. To make matters worse when they build these so called airports they award the contracts to incompetent friends and what you get is a poorly designed, poorly built monstrosity that looks like a mosque or a very ugly warehouse.
I wonder why there are no pictures to show us what the new RE-CONSTRUCTED Enugu Airport looks like. Reminds me of an ss Governor who awarded himself a N7billion contract to construct a non-existent runway. In other countries they build airports without any politicians laying any foundation or commissioning anything. They just do it with no long stories or excessive fanfare.
Look at China, they built close to 10 brand new cities without making any noise .Google zhendong New District or Ordos city just to name a few. These project were undertaken with highest level of dedication ever witnessed in human history. Zhengdong New district alone cost $19 billion. Jonathan on the other hand stole over $30 billion from our foreign reserves in 3 years and has nothing to show for it.
Our Government makes over $100 billion every year from our Oil benefits yet we do not have world class cities ,reliable health facilities ,land lines, decent schools, budget housing or world class infrastructure, all we have is dumb politicians like Jonathan who just talk and talk.
If i were president i would have built at least 3 new cities since Jonathan became president and provided genuine budget housing for the masses. One of the easiest ways to grow an economy is by building new infrastructure and providing cheap housing.
How hard can it be for the Nigerian Government to build world class Hospitals? How hard can it be for the Nigerian Government to build world class Roads? How hard can it be for the Nigerian Government to build world class Schools? How hard can it be for the Nigerian Government to build world class Coal Power Plant? How hard can it be for the Nigerian Government to build world Dams? How hard can it be for the Nigerian Government to build world class Nuclear Power Plants? How hard can it be for the Nigerian Government to build world class Solar Power Plants? How hard can it be for the Nigerian Government to build world class Airports? How hard can it be for the Nigerian Government to build world class Universities? How can all the above be when we make more than $50 billion yearly.
It is not hard at ALL, It is as simple as ABC if our President wants to do it but he does not "give a damn"
This same man awarded his stupid wife N4 billion to build a silly building that has no benefit for Nigerians. Do you know how many budget homes N4 billion Niara can build for Nigerians
We can chose to defend our slave master or choose to do away with them. We have the money to be great but we lack great leaders.
Let me show you what $19 billion of the $50 billion dollars Jonathan and his cronies steal every year can do for you my people if you elect the right leaders :
Zhengdong New District
Cost $19 Billlion
Duraction of Contruction : 4 Years
Total Population Capacity : 5 Million People
Current Population : 2.5 Million

Now imagine if for the next 3 years Jonathan put aside $19 billion a year to build one city each. In 3 years Lagos Population would have been reduced as these people will flock to the new cities to inhabit it. The $19 billion dollar city can house 5 million people that means that if Jonathan chooses to build 3 new cities he would have provided a place of abode for another 15 million people. This will also reduce the outrageous price of land in areas like Lagos and Abuja as people will have better alternatives.
The fact is that Jonathan does not care about you ,he only cares about himself, he has done NOTHING so far to show that he cares about the poor or the average Nigerian.
SHOW ME ONE THING HE HAS DONE THAT POOR NIGERIANS HAVE BENEFITED FROM.
If you cannot show me one thing this man has done for poor Nigerians surely he has failed and should never be given second a chance to return in 2015.Let us be honest with ourselves. At the end of the day , the only person you can trust is yourself. Put aside petty tribalism Hausa here, Biafra this ,Odua that or Muslim this ,Christian that. Think as an individual , as a Nigerian ,what has PDP done for you?

"Bring together systemically important industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy."
thats why indonesia and south africa are there to represent the growing nations of asia and africa, NOT because they are now also ranked as developed nations.
the real developed natios of the world are stated by IMF below (i will rather go with IMF a world expert in economics than CIA a world expert in national security/secret service/espionage )
i quote below :
"Many countries listed by IMF or CIA as "advanced" possess an HDI over 0.788 (as of 2010).
The latest index was released on 14 March 2013 and covers the period up to 2012. The following are the 47 countries in the top quartile - having an HDI above 0.8, and classified as possessing a "Very high human development".

sorry i cannot find south african on this IMF list of the worlds top 47 most advanced countries
no single african country made it to the IMF list above. Agaugust it seems to me that you chose to ignore the under-mentioned statement from your link above; When you scroll down you will find this and I haven't modified anything, it is just a paste and copy. According to the IMF the following 35 economies are classified as "advanced economies":[20] ▪ Australia ▪ Austria ▪ Belgium ▪ Canada ▪ Cyprus ▪ Czech Republic ▪ Denmark ▪ Estonia ▪ Finland ▪ France ▪ Germany ▪ Greece ▪ Hong Kong ▪ Iceland ▪ Ireland ▪ Israel ▪ Italy ▪ Japan ▪ Luxembourg ▪ Malta ▪ Netherlands ▪ New Zealand ▪ Norway ▪ Portugal ▪ San Marino ▪ Singapore ▪ Slovakia ▪ Slovenia ▪ South Korea ▪ Spain ▪ Sweden ▪ Switzerland ▪ Taiwan ▪ United Kingdom ▪ United States The CIA has modified an older version of the IMF's list of Advanced Economies, noting that the IMF's Advanced Economies list "would presumably also cover"[18] some smaller countries. These include: See also: The World Factbook list of developed countries And this also; The official classification of "advanced economies" is originally made by the International Monetary Fund(IMF). The IMF list doesn't deal with non-IMF members. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) intends to follow IMF list but adds few economies which aren't dealt with by IMF due to their not being IMF members. By May 2001,the advanced country list of the CIA was more comprehensive than the original IMF list. However, since May 2001, three additional countries (Cyprus, Malta and Slovenia) have been added to the original IMF list, thus leaving the CIA list not updated. 11. ^ Namely sovereign states, i.e., excluding Macau: In 2003 the government of Macau calculated its HDI as being 0.909 (the UN does not calculate Macau's HDI); In January 2007, the People's Daily reported (from China Modernization Report 2007): "In 2004... Macau... had reached the level of developed countries". However, Macau is not recognized by any international organisation as a developed/advanced territory, while the UNCTAD organisation (of the UN), as well as the CIA, classify Macau as a "developing" territory. The World Bank classifies Macau as a high income economy (along with developed economies as well as with few developing economies). IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE IMF RELY HEAVILY ON THE INFORMATION COMPILED BY THE CIA JUST LIKE UNIVERSITIES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING. |

It seems to me you have a problem of understanding? I have never mentioned anything about the IMF, or did you see my statement anywhere with those three capital letters? |

all4naija: That is not from CIA,it is from Wikipedia freelance writer probably coming from a primitive South African. I would be interested in the CIA fact file that says SA is a developed nation. You are free to do that my friend and if you get the biggest disappointment of your life, you must never shy to share the news with us. |

patriot4: So you really think Nigérians are too foolish to smell your reversed psychology ? Let me ask you this: what if we invested a lot in our military and then colonized South africa and her economy, would you still be laughing ? Nuisant. Yes, maybe in your dreams. |

patriot4: Dude, CIA is not a "world body". It is the spy agency of the USA. This shows how clueless you are. Everybody knows CIA is an intelligence agency, but specifically here I am speaking about The world Factbook which is administered by CIA, where we get information about development of any country. Haven't they taught you about the The World Factbook? Or do you know anything about it. Do you know that many researchers when they conduct various research they sometimes make use of information already collected by CIA. This body exist everywhere, hence I called it credible world body. Read: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_World_Factbook |

agaugust: ...because the european white men in G-8 invited their white brothers in south africa to sit together at the same table. ZUMA sits and not a white man. Moreover, Zuma has all the legitimate rights to sit there coz his country is one of the Top20 most industrialised nation that can influence the world. |

all4naija: Yes! South Africa has been a third world nation right from time. You can cry as much as you want to, but the most respectable body on earth, CIA do not see with your eye. They have resolved that SA and Turkey should be put on their records as the developed nations. We have passed that stage long ago. |

Ndubuisi711: Now do you think free education will ever be possible if there are no any funds to finance it? We are losing skill to other countries because we simply do not have enough money to pay competitive salaries. Do you think those engineers and doctors will stay in Nigeria if we are paying them peanuts, simply because we are taking the whole budget to feed our military. This is the same route that Zimbabwe has taken by voting their whole budget to their military which eventually only sees officers being paid more than the medical doctors. Ndubuisi you are wrong, Nigeria must build the strong force in the whole world. Infact, Nigeria must buy six Submarines and two Aircraft carriers. Nigeria should procure all those big weapons so that she should be feared and respected. Why should Nigeria invest in her economy? She should rather satisfy her police and military and pay them huge salaries just like what uncle Bob (Mugabe) has done. Uncle Bob believes that you should keep all your armies close to you, so that when the trouble strikes they should defend you. It is a wonderful career to be a soldier in Zim. |

DictatorZAR: The truth is the South African Government classify SA as a Developmental State, or as some put it a advanced deverlopental state with allot of things still needed to be done mostly in Primary Education, Healthcare and rural development. Most of the UN millennium development goals have been reached today but still a lot needs to be done in income inequalities which relates directly to education even thought huge strides have been made and the black middle class is wealthier today then its white counterparts.
South Africa is trying to in trench more industrial developments, SA is still work in progress and will only be developed by 2025 if the goverment continue with its current infrastructural developments which is the largest on the continent. Education and development first then can u be classified as developed, when all departments focuses on maintaining standards rather them trying to set standards and implement new policies to achieve them.
Most of EU states has been built on african/asian/south american exploitation, africa is only awakening now and sub sahara africa will in 2030 be the second largest economic region after Asia, europe will even fall behind south america. My fellow countryman, we can argue, but it is final even though we do not satisfy some of the requirements. SA and Turkey were the latest countries to be listed as developed countries by the CIA fact book. SA analysis of whether is developed or developing remains to be anomaly, since we have many areas in SA that meet all the requirements of developed nations. We have world class health facilities, Universities, Infrastructure of international standard, etc. |

speedyboi: I won't even bother clicking after seeing 'co.za'. I know your media is BS The first thing you feel when you are about to click on any weblink with the domain of CO.ZA, you panic and ask yourself " Oh! God what is SA on about now" LOL!!! Please be informed that such domains are not designed to scare you away, it's just a media and wherever you see it just open it and read it with confidence. SA is by no means competing with Nigeria and the only thing I've realised about many of you is that, you want to make it look like there is a competition between Nigeria and SA. |
