ndu_chucks: All things being equal, these Smart cars which are abundantly available in India, Brazil, and even the USA, in my opinion, are the only cars which can be assembled in Nigeria and sold to the public profitably, at the N1million - N1.2million price range.Do you know that by the early 1960s, the US had begun placing stiff import tariffs on certain vehicles. The chicken tax of 1964 placed a 25% tax on imported light trucks. In response to the tariff, Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. began building plants in the US by the early 1980s (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota). This is the precursor to why every motor vehicle manufacturer has a plant in the US. At that time the US had their own infrastructural and economic problems, but that did not deter the car makers. All of una wey no want make all the major car makers build plants for Naija na thunder go fire una Mama and Papa them. Read a little of the US history before you begin to compare Naija to the US. They (US) went through worst situations than Naija in their formative years and these were well documented, before they come the form Big Brother to other countries wey wan try arrange. |
ndu_chucks: All things being equal, these Smart cars which are abundantly available in India, Brazil, and even the USA, in my opinion, are the only cars which can be assembled in Nigeria and sold to the public profitably, at the N1million - N1.2million price range.OP, that's a blantant lie. @Siena, you disappointed me on this one. Kia Picanto sells for about N950,000.00 - N1,200,000.00 in Nigeria. Hyundai i10 also goes for about the same amount. In Abuja, this 2 cars are about the in-thing now with so many young car owners, especially the babes. So why should you draw conclusions on someone else' perceptions, more especially when the person lives very far away, is not realistic and his drawing his/her conclusions on baseless assumptions. Why are we so quick to condemn, but very very slow to notice the goodies around us?

Just write a cheque of your one month basic salary, excluding allowances in favour of your employers and attach it to your resignation letter and submit it on your last day of work. That gets you off without any victimization now or in the future. Legally, it is called "One-Month-in-Lieu-of-Notice" and nobody can do anything to you after that. I've done that before so I know. |

Thorerah: Which woman wøuld wear that on her wedding day?Tonto Dike |
ballabriggs: You better stop mentioning Mexico as Mexico benefits through the NAFTA and tariff free trade to the US. The Mexican and the Nigerian case should not be compared. So also is Nigeria supposed to benefit from the ECOWAS. But, since we won't produce anything, other countries (Ghana, Benin, Togo, etc) in the region are taking advantage of our population and unproductivity to boost their economy. |
chino11: The importers want to receive their foreign goods direct in Onitsha. This is good. It will shut up all those eediots thinking that Lagos is Bigger than Nigeria/FG. If O'sha becomes an entry Port for goods, Lagos would loose half of its importance. O ye Lagosians, begin to conjure, lobby and try as much as you can that O'sha Port does not get that status, or else... |
mankand: high crime rate causing unrest in the country.Mexico, the kidnap headquarters of the world has a far higher crime rate than Nigeria, yet it has over 5 auto assembly/manufacturing plants. Even Brazil's crime rate is higher than that of the whole West Africa put together, yet we import heavy duty city (luxurious) buses from there. I don't see why as Nigerians we desperately find excuse of/for reasons why we shouldn't do anything and thus, fail. If we want change, clamour for change, yet we don't want a change in the staus quo ante. Then how do we change? |
niceeric: I dont think you get this sir, when I clear a car at the port,I pay government d money thru customs therefore they dont get no money no more if there is nothing to clear so that in no Way. helps building of power plants....Government should have built power plants and made our supply of electricity uninterrupted before starting this show of eventually shame...I think we have no one thinking in d PresidencyOk. Lets do it like this. (All figures are hypothetical and based on assumptions, ceteris paribus.) You buy a car from the carmart for N6,000,000.00 in Nigeria The car actually costs N4,500,000.00; import duty N1,200,000; Transportation/Handling, etc N300,000. You, the buyer pays the sum of N6,000,000 to the dealer. Now, my point is this. Instead of paying N1,200,000 to the FG as import duty, that amount can be aggregated for several vehicles and used to set up and run power plants for production. I hope you get my drift? |
1025: is it by force to drive mint cars? leave us with our tokunbo cars while those who steal public funds go for mint cars. why is this man forcing us to buy mint cars? outside nigeria where citizens drive mint cars, they don't pay cash as most of them pay for 4 years. who will release cars on credit to a nigerian? if they start it, i will buy 10 and sale them before running away.Look at how retardded you are. Not even a single Like. Your best bet is to edit your post so that you won't look silly before your kids in the future when they come across your post. |
niceeric: can someone kindly tell me how this is gonna work in d long run with our current state of industrial 'affairs'?Tell me how Nissan would produce cars while running on generators and would sell at dsame rate or lower than the Japan produced vehicles?tell me how we wont prefer to still buy tokunbo cars despite d tarrif increase when d locally assembled cars are at cut-throat prices...tell me how this isnt another strategy to make us know that if you aint rich in Nigeria,u can aswell go and die...tell me how this wont still amount to d kinda problems we face in telecommunications where the MTN tarrif in Nigeria is killing compared to South Africa and finall tell me if this wont end like Peugeot Assembly of Nigeria,Volkswagen Nigeria,Dunlop Nigeria etc....My government has no knowledge of what its priorities should be....The money that would have been used to clear the cars at the Port would be used to set up and run power plants. |
geeez: Fair in what sense? It seems you have never travelled out of Lagos since the day you were born. 1. Lagos generates the highest IGR in Nigeria, because of its location and subsequent development by the FG. Almost everything that comes into Nigeria legimately, enters through Lagos and this also comes with its attendant revenue for the state. 2. Federal roads in many states have been renovated and maintained in times past by state governments, not just Lagos State. The Uyo-PH road was expanded and constructed by the Akwa Ibom State Government, the Warri-Benin road was reconstructed by the Delta State Government under Ibori, the PH-Owerri road is currently being expanded and constructed by the Rivers State Government. Apart from patching of Fed roads in Lagos, what else has the LASG done. Moreover, there is need for the development/rehabilitation of more roads across the country for which roads in Lagos ain't a priority. 3. Every State Govt. provides water for its inhabitants, for industrial, commercial or domestic use. Mind you that Lagosians pay for water supplied to the LASG and not the FG. 4. The FG laws supercedes that of any state govt. If an investor wants to go to a country, he/she first look at the laws of that country. If the laws are favourable, then he may go there before picking a location. No investor would come to Lagos if the FG don't make laws that would attract them. A lot of investors are siting in Ogun, because their laws are more humane and less tasking than that of Lagos State. These companies also enjoy proximity to access of entry/exit due to the proximity of Ogun to Lagos. |
geeez: I've seen impressive and massive industrialization in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun with new factories springing upYou lied. In Ebonyi, the agro-allied industry is being industrialized and food processing/packaging is booming at the moment. That I know of, because I have bought and used several locally produced and packaged food from Ebonyi. These companies were established by foreigners. As for Borno, if not for the BH thing, I'm so sure that something would have catch on. But, be it as it may, I have not heard any of the companies operating there relocating since the advent of the BH. That goes to tell a lot about what we are not aware of... |

uba okeke: YOU are a FOOL and clueless!!!!! Stupid / dumb Points!!! Am sure they've paid u to yarn trash!! Same thing they said when they wanna ban importation of Rice. Same youth employment scheme dey promised us during Fuel Subsidy! Same shiii dey also they keep saying. What the masses is simply saying is..get this plans started first and b4 u implement such laws!!Thanks for calling me a fool. At least I am a fool that knows my basic economics, but you are a wise person that has more folly than the fool. There is always light at the end of a dark tunnel. Light usually appears after the darkest part of the night. For things to get better, there must be change, and with this change some people would suffer while others benefit. If you are holding the short end of the stick and is feeling agrieved, then go to Zimbabwe and open a shop. Every Government must try to protect its local economy/industries and you don't do that by importing fairly used items and say its because of poor people. I pray you grow old enough to understand basic economics and the little games of life. Amen. |
Aigbofa: Since your own middle class are the same everywhere, can you please compare in dollars the average salary of a teacher in Nigeria and other industrialized countries?Mr Dollar man, can you also compare the living costs in America and Nigeria? If you do, it might surprise you to know that they both earn similar wages especially if you relate it to what percentage is spent/saved from a monthly paycheck. So don't come hear praising the dollar and claiming that America is heaven on earth. Civil servants worldwide don't earn much in comparison with the prevailing local standards, but they are usually not badly off either. So take note. |
Aigbofa: The teachers and nurses and regular folks who save up to buy ten year old cars are not rich people by my standard. These group of people are called the middle class in every society/country. They are not the poor. They are the people that build up a country's GDP. If in doubt, ask google. |
Aigbofa: Your definition of poor may be different from mine. That is ok. It is probably due to your limited world view. The only part of Nigeria that is actually growing is not under GEJ's party anyway. Nothing to gloat about.Well! well!! well!!! Even Gov. Fashola (your APC flagship) postulated that buying car is a luxury. It was very contentiius in the media this year. I wonder where you were then sha? |
otokx: South Africa has over 50000 mega watts of power, lets stop deceiving ourselves in this country. Nigeria does not have up to 5000 mega watts of power, no road, so how then will car assembly lines start up?South Africans hate Nigerians like hell, yet Toyota cars sold in the Nigerian market are assembled in South Africa? 1. Whats the population of SA and how many people buy these brand new cars in SA? 2. How many tokunbo cars are imported into SA? 3. Where do most Toyotas assembled in SA end up? 4. Whats the price difference between the Brand new Toyotas sold in Nigeria and that sold in SA? 5. What accounts for this price difference? If you can apply this to all other car brands bought brand new in Nigeria and produce the answers to these questions, you would understand where the Government is heading towards. Mind you that bad roads has not in any one way affected the importation of used and new vehicles, yet Nigerians are saying it would affect the local assembly/production of vehicles. What an irony? |
Aigbofa: I am not surprised. After all, it was a Nigerian minister who said telephone is a luxury not meant for poor people. Nigeria must be the only country in the world Where ten to fifteen year old rickety vehicles are considered a luxury. In th East, where most of the brand new cars we buy come from, poor people don't buy cars. Even in the west, where we say they are developed, the poor don't buy cars. For emphasis sake, mention any country in the world where poor people buy cars, even the rickety 10-20 years old cars that are not luxury to you, mon ami. Your rants and rattles only points to one fact. Things are economically getting better in Nigeria. |
