you clearly fan of compromised aesthetics over reliability.
What do you mean by compromised aesthetics over reliability. I have never found a Toyota reliable. I have seen Toyotas & Benzes do what you think happens to Hondas alone. This your Toyota craze is... Mschew!!!

Hello guys,

I am torn between 4runner 2003/3004 model, honda pilot 2005/06 and Acura MDX 2004/5 model. I need a car that I can use for at least 4 years and which will not give me stress. I also do some travellings, at leats Lagos-Abuja once a month.

which one should I go for?
I drove my elder brothers 05/06 4Runner and admired it for its solid performance. Hitherto to that day, I hated the SUV so much because of its blandness, especially the interior and the cramped-up-like interior space.

I never noticed the Honda Pilot even though my friend's mum owned one which my friend now uses until I bought one recently and noticed that it is as solid as any SUV can be. If you do a head count on Nigerian roads, you would realize that the Pilot is as plenty as the 4Runner or Highlander. This shows you that it is very reliable and has little or no maintenance issues contrary to what those 'stay off Honda' misfits are saying.

I used to own an Acura TL until recently. It is the most solid ride I have ever driven in my entire motoring life. My elder brother's wife own an 03/04 Acura MDX which she has misused and abused, yet the SUV refused to give up on her. That's how good the car is.

My opinion:
I am not a Toyota freak, no matter what Nigerians say or make the Toyota look like. The Acura is an SUV you would drive in style and comfort for long journies. It is so comfortable that by the time you arrive Sokoto from Lagos, it would look as if you are just waking up. It is the best for long distance journies. And lest I forget do you know that, that Acura MDX can move? Lol...

My Verdict:
Go with the Acura MDX and you won't regret it.

PoliticsVoting For Nigeria’s Future, By Femi Aribisala. Could This Be True? by FlyboyZee(op):
Warning:
This write-up is pretty long. We must all understand that political dissertations are usually long to be able to touch the points highlighted explicitly. This is for the matured minds and not the feint-hearted and children on this forum. I am neutral to what Femi Aribisal has written, but I feel it draws an inner soul searching in our political dispensation of today. What do you guys think?

What is the forthcoming 2015 presidential election about? Let us first identify what it is not about. It is not about improving the economy of Nigeria. If you insist it is, then you will need to tell me what either the PDP or the APC has told Nigerians it will do with regard to the economy. As a matter of fact, the only party whose economic programme we know is the PDP. At least, we can see what it has been able to achieve in the last 16 years. However, the APC is barely one year old. I need someone to tell me the economic policy of the APC. It is non-existent.

Voodoo economics

Let us see if we can get some indications by focusing on those currently in the running for the APC’s presidential ticket. In the first place, we have Muhammadu Buhari. I must confess that I don’t have a clue as to what Buhari’s economic policy is because he has not told us about it. In spite of the fact that he is running for president for a marathon fourth time, the truth is that Buhari does not have an economic policy.

Worse still; Buhari is a retired military officer. He has no economic background or training. Buhari knows little or nothing about the Nigerian economy; how much more how to transform and improve it. A man who claims he had to borrow 27.5 million naira from a bank in order to pay for the presidential nomination papers of his party is not likely to have the resources to put together a serious economic think tank.

We also have competing for the APC ticket, men like Atiku Abubakar and Rabiu Kwankwaso. Quite apart from the fact that these men have also been economical as to what precisely they would do with regard to the Nigerian economy, they were until just yesterday, members of the ruling PDP. Atiku was even the vice-president of Nigeria under the PDP for 8 years. Kwankwaso was a PDP governor. Therefore, we cannot expect anything different from either of them than what we have been getting under the PDP.

Let us face the facts, Atiku and Kwankwaso defected to the APC, not because of any policy or ideological differences they had with the PDP, but because they realised that they could not run for the presidency under the PDP, which has a sitting president. These men are in the APC for reasons of expediency and not of policy. When the APC loses the election in 2015 and, with Jonathan out of the way, they can be expected to make their way back to the PDP with their tails between their legs.

Anti-corruption malarkey

There are those who insist the election is about dealing with endemic corruption. If so, the only political party in Nigeria that has addressed in any way shape or form the issue of corruption in Nigeria has been the PDP. If we have anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria today, they were instituted by the PDP. If we have jailed corrupt politicians, after taking them through due process, it has only happened under the PDP. If we have recovered monies stolen from abroad, it has only taken place under the PDP. The PDP has even on occasion prosecuted some of its own members who were corrupt.

There is nothing anti-corruption about the APC. The party welcomes thieves, robbers and saints into its ranks with equal enthusiasm. If you are a thief or in a position to provide stolen public funds for the use of the APC, the party’s political machinery in your state will be handed over to you. The APC cannot claim to be anti-corruption when the fee for procuring the nomination papers for its presidential primaries is even more extortionate than that of the PDP. In short, as far as corruption is concerned, there is no difference between the PDP and the APC. They are Tweedledee and Tweedledum.

I have never heard anybody accuse Atiku Abubakar or Bola Tinubu of being anti-corruption. The person who brings the illusion of an anti-corruption debate into the 2015 presidential election is Muhammadu Buhari. But if Buhari is so anti-corruption, what is he doing in the APC? In any case, Buhari has not for one minute told us what he would do about corruption in Nigeria.

What we have is just a lot of grandstanding. How does he propose to contend with a legislature which will surely comprise the usual staple of corrupt politicians? How does Buhari hope to address the issue of corruption in the judiciary? Not a word on any of these issues. All we are told is that he is anti-corruption. Unfortunately for the APC, it is only the PDP that has an anti-corruption policy, even if this policy is currently implemented imperfectly.

Nation-building

If the 2015 presidential election is not about the Nigerian economy and not about corruption what then is it about? The election is first and foremost about building the nation of Nigeria. Do we vote to go forward as a viable and united nation, or do we vote for the eventual disintegration of Nigeria? There can be no question that, to date, these have been the most pressing questions concerning the forthcoming presidential election.

The question then is this: which political party is best able to move forward the Nigeria project. Which political party will be best able to promote the unity of Nigeria: is it the PDP or is it the APC? As far as I am concerned, this question is a no-brainer. In every material particular, the PDP is today the party that is best positioned to secure Nigeria’s future, while the APC is inclined to jeopardize it.

As a matter of fact, the people who have been threatening the internal cohesion of Nigeria over the last six years by the insistence that a South-South man should not rule the country are mainly to be found in the APC. For this very reason, someone like me will continue to support the PDP over the APC for the duration of this election cycle.

Inclusive Nigeria

Nigeria cannot be a country for the majority tribes alone, especially in a situation where oil, the mainstay of the Nigerian economy, comes from the minority South-South states. My faith teaches me to always support the weak. In a situation where the North-West has produced the leadership of this country for 14 years, the North-Central for 18 years and the South-West for 11, no one should begrudge the South-South if one of its sons were to occupy the presidency for 10 years; according to the dictates of divine providence.

The truth is that, in spite of its many shortcomings, the PDP is the only truly national party we have in Nigeria. The APC is a coalition of ethnically chauvinistic parties. ACN was primarily a Yoruba party of the South-West. CPC was a one-man Northern party formed principally to advance the political ambitions of Buhari. In the 2011 presidential elections, ACN barely got votes from the North, while CPC barely got votes from the South.

In coalition as the APC, these South-West and North-West parties remain ethnically chauvinistic. APC cannot get 25% of the votes in two-thirds of the states in the federation. All its presidential candidates are from the North. The overwhelming majority of its governors are Muslims. Such a party is not in the interest of the growth and development of a united Nigeria. The PDP, on the other hand, is a North-West, North-Central, North-East, South-West, South-South and South-East party. It has roots in all parts of the federation.

No brinkmanship

At different points in the history of Nigeria, we have been able to step back from the brink and recalibrate our trajectory towards a united nation. That was the reason why, in 1999, it was generally agreed that the next president of Nigeria should be a South-West Yoruba man. Accordingly, the major contenders for the presidency were Yorubas. That decision was taken in the interest of national unity. Such a sober and enlightened consideration needs to be taken again in the political climate of the 2015 election.

Nigerians must be careful not to give the people of the South-South the impression that while we continue to exploit their oil, we refuse to recognize them as equal partners in Nigeria. It can be argued that we have already accommodated them since Goodluck Jonathan has been president for six years. But I beg to disagree.

In the last six years, the “born to rule” elements in the North have not allowed Goodluck Jonathan to rule. All sorts of schemes have been used to frustrate his administration. Even the prerogative for a party with a majority in the House of Representatives to have its own speaker was betrayed on the altar of ethnic chauvinism. We also had the unedifying situation where the Governor of the Central Bank went rogue, gave government funds to the opposition and cast aspersions publically against the government. That is not done.

The 2015 presidential elections are about the continued existence of Nigeria as a nation. The only party that can guarantee that now is the PDP. If Goodluck Jonathan loses the presidential election, even in a free and fair poll, I am convinced the future of Nigeria would become even more problematic. The South-South would not take his rejection kindly. We cannot continue to drink their oil and then reject their rule. They would either demand secession, or they would sabotage the oil wells.

With Boko Haram insurgency, Nigeria limps on because the economic jugular of the country is safely tucked away in the South. But with South-South insurgency, the Nigerian economy would grind to a halt. If the North would not allow Jonathan to rule, don’t expect the South-South to allow Buhari or Atiku to rule. As far as I am concerned, the economic disaster that would follow the rejection of the PDP in favour of the sectarian APC is too high a price to pay; just because some people feel the Nigerian presidency is their birthright.

Car TalkRe: Do Cars Malfunction After Having Sex In Them? by FlyboyZee: 2:02pm On Nov 10, 2014
Well, I never believed it till I got hit.

This happened in my hey days when the boy in me was bigger than the man then. lol...

I got invited by one of my bros for a hang out and I decided to pick this babe to flex her along. I never had any plans to do her sha. But as it turned out, we hung out till about 2am and were all high on booze before dispersing from the joint. I drove her straight to a secured and quite residential area in town, parked along the road and then reclined the front passenger's seat all the way down and we had one hell of a sexx right there in the car with the engine running and the ac in full blast with all doors locked and head lights turned off. It was something else, like I never had sexx before. In short, it was great.

After our thing, we struggled back into our clothes, we were more sober now. I returned the seat back to its position, opened the door disposed of the used CDs and then instead of engaging D, I did a funny thing. For no absolute reason, I engaged R and stirred the car away from the road as if attempting to climb the kerb in reverse gear. The next thing I heard was PFUUFFF!!!. The back passenger side tyre had been seared through by a rod protruding from a broken kerb slab. That was the same tyre I bought earlier in the day. I came down from the vehicle and saw what had happened. It was already about 3.30am and I wasn't in the mood to start changing tyres at that time of the night. So I dove the vehicle like that, dropped her off at her place and then headed home. The next morning I had to buy a replacement tyre.

You see my story? So, whatever it is, I don't know and I don't care to know. It might be a coincidence or a prevailing superstitionthat had happened, but all I know is that I lost a brnd new tyre after fucckking inside the car.

If a brand new car and a tokunbo goes for same amount
Which would you honestly go for?
There is no excuse for anyone spending over a million naira in buying a car. Whoever has at least one million naira to buy a car can always buy a brand new car. The problem is most of us would rather buy a used car than brand new even when we have the money. I don't why, but its something I have always come to notice.

For instance, someone buying a used 2007-2010 Honda Civic for between 2.2 -2.6 million naira could have bought a brand new Toyota Yaris, Honda City, Kia Picanto, Rio, Cerato or Optima, Hyundai i10, Accent, Elantra or Grand, Peugeot 206, Nissan Micra, Almera, Ford Focus, etc, yet chooses to buy the Tokunbo Civic. What do you make of that?

3. Hyundai Accent (I ain't sure about this one, but it should be in that neighbourhood).

Hello friends,
Please has anyone in the house used Milemaster engine oil 5w-30? I want to start using it as from my next service schedule. kindly advice me if it was ok especially if you bought it from konga or any authorised dealer in Nigeria. If you are a marketer of this oil and you haven't used it in your car, pls do not comment. pls follow this pattern.
1) Are you a user or marketer or both?
2) How long have you been using milemaster?
3) What type of oil filter do you use and how much is it?
4) How many kilometres do you drive before you service your car again?
Thank you so much for your responses.
(1 & 2) I have been using the Milemaster 5w-20 for my '02 Acura TL since January 2013, For my 2001 Honda Accord (Honda Adidas) since March 2013 and for my 2009 Honda Civic since February 2014.

(3) I use the regular Honda filters in the market.

(4) For the Acura, I do my oil change every 5000km. For the Accord, every 5000km. For the Civic, there is an oil life indicator which tells you when to change oil. As per the oil shortage thing, I have never experienced it in any of my cars.

Wrongest move ever liveth.

This is my experience.

I once tried to sell off one of my cars after acquiring a more recent model, so I put the car on display in a strategic location in the town. The said car is in top shape as I still used it to travel from Port Harcourt to Abuja and back while displaying it in between. As in its as well-maintained, clean, in top shape and as reliable as any car can be. No vibrations. No squeaky sounds. No wobbly movements. No burning odour. No torn seats or interior. No broken lights or electrical faults. Nothing was absolutely wrong with the car as I am a maintenance freak.

People started and kept on calling and bargaining with me. There was this one particular guy who went ahead and brought a mechanic to check the car out. The mechanic confessed to the guy I usually drop the keys with that he has never seen a used car this clean. He even asked my guy if maybe I bought the car for someone and the person offended or disappointed me, hence prompting me to sell off the car in anger, but my guy told him that I have used the car for 2 years and has already upgraded so there is no point in still keeping the car since I sparingly use it.

The mechanic collected my number from the car and called me pretending to the guy that brought him that he wanted to ask me somethings about the car, only for him (mechanic) to be telling me to give him N50,000.00 for him to convince the person that brought him that the car is a good buy, even after acknowledging to me that the car was in top shape and very clean. I told him to tell the man who brought him that the car is not good and as such he shouldn't buy and that that should be the last time he ever calls me again.

All I am trying to say is that those mechanics only see that as an opportunity to make money off you and as such are not looking out for you but solely and strictly looking out for themselves. Never trust a mechanic even if he were your father.

I wouldn't consider a Freelander in any case as I feel that it was something that Land Rover created out of a panic to respond to certain market segment and isn't at the typical LR product level.
You are right on point, that Freelander was a terrible mistake from Land Rover.

My first car was a volkswagen and any problem it had i was the one that caused it.. the only problem that car gave me was the fuel pump and when i found out what to do to it the problem stopped for good and i fixed it myself even after mechanics under my watchful eyes tried their best.. i really felt good having that car and it make me believe that our mechanics are very stewpid ay their jobs. Because with full time research, i dictated to them what to do because they have the tools but i knew what i was expecting as a result so all energies were channeled towards that direction.. the only cars i may not buy in nigeria are those brand names i may not find their parts in the market at all. But for the normal 5 star car companies in the world, i would use any brand, model and year that pleases me.
They said the Acura is a no-go area, yet I own a 2002 TL that makes the '08 Toyota Camry look like a toy both in performance and facilities. All I do is scan the car, get the codes, go online and do more research on the codes just to be sure of what I am doing. Then call a mechanic and tell him exactly what to do while supervising him. Each time I go to my mechanic, he wqits for me to give him step by step instructions.

That comparison is going to be a toughie for me.

As far as I an concerned the only current Land Rover products of any worth are the LR (whatever series that they are on now) and Range Rover(whatever fancy denomination they are currently using). I am an old time Land Rover afficianado, I gudgingly stepped up arguable from my 110 into a Discovery.

In all honesty the RX is a dedicated and finely crafted response to German intrusions. Brand new to brand new it is far better overall than a Freelander.

The Infiniti, Lexus, Acura brands are a no nonsense take no prisoner response to German offerings. You will ahve to try very hard to shake them down in comparisons.

When I look at vehicle purchases it comes down to three major items:

Value: Am I getting the most value for my money (I bought a VW Jetta for me Wife instead of an Audi A4, but I know that the Audi is superior but the VW gives me a better value).

Refinements: Am I going to save running costs but paying more at a Chiropractor? Will one come with the latest gadgets or will I be staring at blanking plates on my dash?

Mechanicals: Does the vehicle have what I need? Turbo? AWD? Sunroof? Leather seat? etc

We've reached a place in manufacturing development that every single car is a good car in the world. Even a Kia can be ordered to the walls with leather and GPS. I saw a Hyundai thing on the road the other day that looked like a Lexus LS450, it was that good of a copy.

You've whipped me into shape, at least on Car Talk, so I'm more calmer now grin
The Lexus RX slots in above the Land Rover Freelander. You should be comparing the Freelander with the Toyota Rav4 and not the Lexus RX.

expert101: ...Nigerians like show-off too much except you will steal money to maintain the jeep...
They keep saying that as if its Nigerians that buy the brand new cars. Most of the exotic cars on our roads being driven by the up and mobile are used cars bought cheaply from abroad, mostly the US and some parts of Europe, yet some folks would be going on as if we Nigerians buy expensive cars too much. The cars that are the crux of this thread are both used cars. Who used the cars when they first rolled off the factory in 2005, was it Nigerians? We are here discussing about used (probably abandoned, as in salvage) car and someone is here saying we like to show off and like big things. My brother, its absolutely annoying. Folks like him wants everybody to use the pencil light Toyota Camry (1997-1999) or they see you as one who is showing off.
Car TalkRe: About Paying For This Car Kindly Advice by FlyboyZee: 6:11pm On Oct 27, 2014

My exact same thoughts. I wont come here to see advice on the kind of car to buy. because whatever you get here is more of a personal opinion rather than rational one. If you like a car and you think you can maintain it then go ahead and buy it. Simple!!!
This is the exact reason I have always refused to buy a Toyota. Everyone's shouting Toyota! Toyota!! so Irefused to buy any of it to see if the other brands I bought would kill me but so far they've all been wrong. In my motoring life, I have owned 4 Hondas (EOD, '88 Prelude, '02 Acura TL & '10 Civic Coupé), 2 Nissans ('00 2.0l Primera & '05 Almera Tino) and a Mercedes Benz 190E, but no Toyota and I have not had any regrets with any of these cars. I had friends who scolded me for my choice and for hating anything Toyota that owned Toyotas who had made mechanics their besties and neighbours just to transit from A to B.

What I have come to notice is that people who are scared of other brands of vehicles other than Toyotas are those that drive very old vehicles, as in 1999 and below. for most guys who buy vehicles made from 2003 to date, they rarely bother themselves about what make to get because even the mechanics that would insist you buy tiny light camry are usually at lost on what to do even on the 2003 Camry. Most cars these days are mechatronical or at worst electrically controlled and maintained and as such those mechanics have little or no input to make in car maintenance as most of them have refused to update their skills.
Car TalkRe: Lexus Rx330 Vs Range Rover Sport by FlyboyZee: 7:57am On Oct 27, 2014

I will go for a Lexus! Pocket friendly maintenance, compact, luxury, stylish and good resale value.

Range Rover will bore a hole in your pocket. You will shout when you go for maintenance with the bill they will hammer you. Nigerians like show-off too much except you will steal money to maintain the jeep. #Poor resale value
Stop yapping. Range Rover is not meant for your likes. Don't blame Nigerians for all your wrong decisions. You earn like an ant, but want to live like an elephant, Why won't you crash. Free people to make their choices jare.

as long as i am concerned, even if i see a made in nigeria aircraft tomorrow, i will not believe it. in economics, we were told there are conditions that allow and promote production.
1. steady power supply,
2. cost of production
3. security
4. infrastructures

what our govt is doing with all these so-called transformation agenda is fraud.
i know many of my friends who had small companies but had to close them down because of cost of diesels. if ppl cannot manufacture pure water, run a drycleaning company or ordinary barbing saloon, how can car companies operate on diesels.

the govt is a fraud. let them put the necessary things on ground and all the car companies of this world will find themselves here but all these inoson and amosun cars are comedy. no wonder they are imposing the cars on ppl.
Whoever taught you that economics must be an agebero working in a motor park or bus station. Production is stimulated by demand not necessarily by infrastructures. Infrastructures only encourage but it is not the sole reason why people produce. Production is created to fill in voids created by increased demands. Most innovations we enjoy today were created during war situations when infrastructures have been destroyed or non- existent. So please, rephrase your thinking, you are no longer juvenile. I beleieve you are an adult now.
