IslamRe: Is Giving Gifts During Eid An Innovation (bid'ah)? by fortran12: 11:12am On May 22, 2020
Lukgaf:
https://www.hidden-pearls.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Small-Eid-Gift-box-3-600x400.jpg

Praise be to Allah.

There is nothing wrong with giving gifts on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to family and relatives, because these are days of joy and happiness on which it is mustahabb to uphold ties, show kindness, and eat and drink plenty. This is not bid‘ah; rather it is something that is permissible and a good custom that is one of the symbols of Eid. Hence it is not allowed to give gifts and express joy and happiness on innovated occasions on which it is not prescribed to celebrate, such as New Year, the Mawlid (Prophet’s birthday) and the fifteenth of Sha‘baan (an-nusf min Sha‘baan), because this makes them like Eids.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said: On this Eid people also exchange gifts, i.e., they make food and invite one another to come and eat, and they get together and celebrate. There is nothing wrong with this custom because these are days of Eid. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the house of the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and found with him two young girls who were singing on the days of Eid, he rebuked them, but the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “Let them be.” And he did not say it because they were young girls. Rather he said: “Let them be, for these are the days of Eid.”

This indicates that Islam, with its tolerant and easy-going attitude, allows people to express joy and happiness on the days of Eid.

End quote from Majmoo‘ Fataawa Ibn Uthaymeen, 16/276

And he (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

It is well known that there are no festivals in Islam except those which are proven in sharee‘ah, namely Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Ahda, and Friday which is the weekly “Eid”. As for the fifteenth of Sha‘baan (an-nusf min Sha‘baan), there is no proof in Islam is that it is an Eid. If it is taken as an occasion on which charity is distributed or gifts are given to neighbors, then this is taking it as an Eid.

End quote from Fataawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb

And he said concerning Mother’s Day: Once this is understood, it is not permissible, on the occasion mentioned in your question, which is called Mother’s Day, to introduce any of the symbols of Eid on this day, such as expressing joy and happiness, giving gifts, and so on.

End quote from Majmoo‘ Fataawa ash-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 2/301

And Allah knows best.

There's nothing bad in realizing one's original ideas were wrong, and that you have a better idea..., built on past knowledge and new information. Even if this better idea will be proven wrong in the future, science is open to refining understanding.

A few examples of refinement involving light:
It was once proposed around 500BCE that that light was emitted from the eyes, which is what allowed people to see.
Of course, this was disproven and a new theory suggested light came from a source (e.g. sun, candle)
It was then theorized that light needed a medium in order to propagate, the way sound needs air, water, or some other substance.
This was also disproven when electromagnetic theory proved that light could travel in a vacuum
It was thought light is instantaneous; then theorized and shown that it takes a finite amount of time to travel (fast, but not instant).

I'm fully open to more refinements, but you see our understanding is broader, truer, and more useful with every iteration.

I also think I misunderstand what you mean by faith. What you describe the scientists doing is intuition: as in, "I think this is what's happening, I am going to persist in trying to understand and explain it, even if other's don't believe it". It's quite possible (as we've seen) that experimentations and further insights will actually disprove the theory. Science is not fundamentally about "being right", it's about understanding. This is quite different from the common uses of faith (i.e. acceptance without understanding, without rationale, without proof, and often with threats of violence)

To wit, definitions of faith:
1. complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
2. strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.

Here's another scenario where I would use the word intuition, and not faith: Back in 1846, Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis had a theory/intuition that hand washing was effective in preventing disease in a hospital environment. Fellow doctors thought it was a silly theory, and were even offended at the suggestion that their hands were infectious. He persisted in his experiments, demonstrated, and showed how people could repeat his findings.
No problem, faith for me, intuition for you.

nextstep:
Science is a constant re-evaluation of understanding, based on new evidence, new theories, and tools.

In other words, science could not explain electromagnetic radiation in 1800s. It can now, and the new understanding is the basis for (e.g. cellular phone infrastructure). Science could not explain flight. Now there is a clear understanding of fluid dynamics and an explosion of all kinds of planes. Same thing with the discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation (helped us theorize Big Bang), and the discovery of dinosaur fossils (which have helped us understand the true age oF Earth).

I'd take scientific revisions based on new discoveries over faith baked in history of life 2000 years ago.

Faith did not bring us telescopes, vaccines, radios, powered flight, computers, Internet. Faith didn't even invent metallurgy; creating metal from ore is an engineering marvel from 3,000 years ago, brought to us by scientific knowledge of that time. It didn't bring agriculture, fishing, or wine making (those all require some level of technology and science - making hoes, fishing nets, or distillation apparatus).

Left to faith, all we would have done since then would be pray and sing, gather fruits and remain naked.
With all you wrote you only highlighted your ignorance of what faith is.
You say science is re evaluating itself meaning in some areas science has been wrong and this also supports my claim that its not constant.
Faith substance of things hoped for, its the action you perform based on things you believe in. Alot of the scientists that laid the foundations of things you enjoy now did these by faith. They believed in something others did not see and acted based on their believe. That is faith. So as you see it has nothing to do with singing and dancing and eating fruits.

My opinion on this is that I think NCDC is reducing the list of people who test positive daily or no enough Tess is carried out daily on purpose and one of many reasons they don’t want to tell us the number of people being tested daily. Like you said and I think if a proper analysis is carried out we will have go into a serious lockdown for two months or so but guess what! Fed Govt have a hand in this because whoever is charge of that donation account is working directly with Sinzu and NCDC. Dirty Politics is the order of the day in this shithole
What help has lock down done to any country? It does not solve the problem it just postpones it.

This is being petty.

We are all just yarning all this because corona did not do us like America or Italy.

At least with those 2 countries we saw how deadly corona was.

Americans were locked down but still having 2,000 deaths daily.
If they weren't locked down it would have been maybe 10,000 deaths daily.

So you would rather risk contracting the virus than staying at home?
Stay home, but a skipping rope, do exercises.
You could do this even in your bedroom.
Your body needs some amount of germs to practice their self defense with. Keeping people in a cocoon does not help. Exercise is good but its the immune system that gets weak when it does not do anything. The number of deaths do not depend on how long you lock down for but who well you care for the vulnerable ones. And they are the minority nation-wide.

If you have no means of isolating the infected people in one swoop, the next sensible thing to do is to isolate the healthy ones to prevent them from contracting it while waiting for the infected ones to manifest the symptoms, fall sick or even die.

America Italy Spain China all did it. You don't know better than them.
Isolating healthy people weakens their immune system. So in the end you have more people with the virus.

1. Corona virus is real.
2. Corona virus is in Nigeria.
3. We may have inaccurate test kits.
4. We may have unqualified testing personnels.
5. A good number of the people being quarantined actually do not have corona due to 3 and 4 above.
6. There is no cure for corona.
7. Corona virus is less potent in Africa than in the West.
8. The best option is to keep everyone at home and give reasonable palliatives to go round for everybody.
9. The Government does not have to means to do number 8 above.
10. Corona virus is real and is here with us!

Do not let hunger stand between you and your safety and thereby fall for the trick that corona is audio.

Do your best to stay corona-free!.
Number 8 is not scientific cos you dont isolate healthy people

Deuteronomy 23 instructs the Jewish people to "have a place outside the camp and go out there, and you shall have a spade among your tools, and it shall be when you sit down outside, you shall dig with it and shall turn to cover up your excrement."
so cos the text didn't mention they should squat or pull up their inner garments after excreting does not mean its not common sense to do so. So cos they covered up their excrement does not mean they did not clean up afterwards.
Your man used stones. He was a dirty man.

According to the UNICEF, government should only locate hotspots for lockdown and not just everywhere. Therefore, based on that, Nigeria should put the following places in total and indefinite lockdown: Lagos, Kano, Oyo, Ogun, Katsina, Borno, Osun, Kaduna, and FCT.

The SE governors must expedite action now, our northern and Western borders must be under strict supervision 24/7 now! States like Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi must take extra precautionary measures to ensure that people are stopped from coming into the SE from these epicenters.

The SE must increase its testing capacity while closing our borders to ensure that our success so far is not frittered away.
It seems you do not understand what was written. They claim the hotspots should be identified you are advising locking down a whole state when they can easily identify hotspots within the state.

Not quite correct.

Lockdown without testing isn't entirely useless.

It prevents infected people from massively infecting other people.

In this case we rely on infected persons falling sick from corona symptoms as an evidence of them having the virus.

As soon as someone falls sick, they come pick the person and also everyone they have contacted.

We should be testing massively I concur;

But my point is that the lockdown is not useless.
You dont lock down healthy people, its counter productive. If someone is sick at your work place will they management ask everyone to stay home until he/she gets better? Most people beat the virus so there is no point holding all hostage. Just provide incentive for only vulnerable people sick with the virus ( people caught lying will be dealt with by the law) and the healthy ones will still be able to work
