This are the kind of ideas that emanate from lots of them for investors these days. If this guy doesn't have the initiative of contacting his bank now he would have been made an unfortunate and unwilling ANGEL INVESTOR.

Ha ha ha, you have touched a nerve their and it hurts.

Return of my money is more important than returns on investment
No so ooo. Small thing instead of sticking to the discussion they will want to bully someone off the thread because they sense you understand their tactics.

Yes ooo if I no get return, I no get back my money wetin I gain. Even if I get return I no come get my money back wetin I gain?

emmanuelewumi:
Private Equity Investors , angel Investors, Investment Banking firms are looking for opportunities to invest in, provided they can meet up with their stringent conditions.
No these ones have ability to scrutinize their activities and will put measures to checkmate and seize them if they try to be funny so they'll rather try to prey on the little savings some people have in TB.

JBiden:
What rubbish are you saying?

When you are pitching an idea to investors, aren't you trying to cajole total strangers to invest in your idea?

Do you know who ANGEL INVESTORS are?

Do you know how many times Zuckerberg's idea for Facebook was rejected? And it was a total stranger(Peter Thiel) that invested $500k in a bunch of school boys running fb then in their hostel room.

https://fortune.com/2011/01/11/timeline-where-facebook-got-its-funding/

"Mark did not start Facebook by cajoling total strangers to come and invest in ideas that he or those around him could not risk investing anything in." see if you don't understand the meaning of certain words, don't use it. When you take a risk on a certain venture or business, you put money knowing it's a 50/50 chances of success or failure. That why it's called RISK!

There is no way in heaven for you to know if a venture will be profitable or not because you cannot see the future e.g AskJeeves: a victim of the dotcom crash. But course, I'm sure I have to explain the dotcom crash to you too.
I do not know who ANGEL INVESTORS are but from your analogy, I will assume they are just investors looking for Investment to throw money at without due diligence.

I think Oga Emmanuel has already answered you on that. In a family, when growing up parents, siblings and relations observe our characters. If you demonstrate that you can handle responsibilities, you would see yourself being trusted with some. Some families sometimes sell land to invest in the ideas and dreams of their wards because they believe it will yield returns. First means of capital for Investment ideas is from your personal saving , then your family and friends before others.

Other means of most times is even for expansion of what is on with you ability to demonstrate that you can do more. That way, you will have proof that what you have is worth the risk.

I was was told you wrote the dictionary and as such understand all the words in it better than anyone. However, I will say individuals levels of risk tolerance are not and can never be the same. The man you came to defend want sham those subscribing to TB with minimal risk as against his own high Investment ideas that he and his family members are not even convinced enough about. Shaming and cajoling a total stranger into parting with his funds instead of convincing him/her or bounce if he/she is not interested because you know what you carry. Is that something to be crying from thread to thread about?

You clearly know nothing about investing.

Even a whole Facebook usually gets rejected by potential investors.
You clearly know everything about investing...!

You could watch the film called SOCIAL NETWORK written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David fincher. It depicts the idea of how Facebook started. Mark did not start Facebook by cajoling total strangers to come and invest in ideas that he or those around him could not risk investing anything in.

The story of how the CEO of Dangote group started is in the open for everyone to see. He did not start cajoling total strangers to come and invest in what he can not proof the viability to them.

That said, you can also Google sources of startup finding/capital it is there for everyone to see. Even If an investment is viable every investors may not see it but eventually it will get the attention people that understands it.

I understand the sentiment behind these thoughts. MMM and similar HYIP are a different thing entirely though.

Ignorance is the cause of the fear the average Nigerian has for investing, someone mentioned financial literacy earlier, thats only what can kill this fear caused by ignorance. A lot of people with money but just do not know what to do with it, pitch them an idea they think it’s another scam.
Fear is good sometimes, it's serves as checks to greed and impulse investing without due diligence. Do you know countless number of people that lose their money here daily due to nicely packaged fake Forex trading with promises of high returns?

Like I keep saying, I have met someone here on Nairaland that we have been doing business transactions for up 6 years or so now. It started with just about N15,000 or so but today it has grown way beyond that. I have never set my eyes on him since then. I have only seen his face on WhatsApp since but we have been cool .

It's been happening that way because he was able to proof himself to me in my terms. Even at that I was the one that got in contact with him because he has what I was interested in not him chasing me around because he felt I had the money.

One can't really force people to release their funds you know. Even those scammed most times have to be convinced before they release it. Except politicians, yahoo boys or maybe thieves/armed robbers. Most people that have money to invest did something to get that money so the fact that they need a safe place to keep that does not mean they are no longer making money elsewhere.

The money they seek to invest most times is something to serve as backup to their current means of earnings.

I've taken close to 600 pages of well documented research around the country to elites and brilliant minds. They said it was just a decoration to scam them. Since then, I've seen the average regular elite as uneducated, mentally poor to reason intelligently andogically hence their strong hold on the familiar 1/2% territory

I don't have the resources, but I believe wisdom is higher and will hold on to it till one day life smiles on me, but as for our people here financial unintelligence is the core problem
When you develop an idea, you have to first of all believe in it. If you believe in your own idea, you will no wait untill total strangers come to invest in it. You have to first invest with all you have.

If all you have is not enough then you try to convince your family members and friends. If you or those categories of people do not believe in what you have to offer is it a total stranger that will want to come and invest his or hard earned money?

And for the records if you have a viable business run in a transparent manner. It's investors that will approach you to invest in it.

In the true sense of it there is nothing like if you don’t gain at least you’re not losing. The naira gets weaker and weaker with each passing day. 10 million in September 2018 isn’t the same with 10 million naira today.

As long as you are not day trading, we have very strong stocks in Nigeria that you definitely won’t lose money with if you are investing for the long term.
Is is true very that the value of money kept and invested will depreciate in value. However, there is a saying that a bird at hand is worth money. By this I am saying that if you have been keeping a N1,000 note since it was produced, by now you will still have it. True that if it was invested it would have increased. Also true that what you could buy then you may not be able to buy again but you still have it.

Ask those guy that invest in all these funny get rich quick investment and ponzi's ; most recent MMM. I had some money in my liberty reserve account back then, one day I woke up and discovered my account was hacked. Mine was better than those that still had money when it crashed. All those monies are gone with the wind . The owner does not have anything left before we will talk about value depreciation.

That said, I am not saying people should not invest or seek to increase their wealth. I am only saying people should invest in what they know/understand and if they do not know much, it is better investing in what has already been tested to avoid stories that touch. Yes, that still does not mean people cannot take risk if they so wish but for the risk averse peace of mind and assurance of your savings being intact is key.

So I was with a few friends lately and we where all discussing about investments and I noticed those who are based in Nigeria mostly spoke of very low yielding investments like fixed deposits, one even left millions of naira in a savings account for 1-2% interest rate.

I understand being averse to risk but fixed deposits and having huge sums are simply making the bank richer at your expense.

I don’t know if it’s financial illiteracy or just plain old laziness. Making sound investment decisions isn’t magic, sometimes all you need to do is just watch the news and you will know what to do.

In the early days of the coronavirus pandemic in March, I bought 5 Amazon stock on eToro for $1820 each totaling just over $9000, I sold them last Thursday when Amazon stocks was at $3400, I turned $9000 into $17000 in 6 months.

I didn’t have a dream beforehand where I saw that Amazon stocks where going to blow up, but knowing there was a lockdown due to the virus, customers wouldn’t be able to go to physical stores for their needs, they have to turn to online stores, Amazon being the biggest in the US, they are where customers will turn to. Simple logic.

Conclusion is my people stay woke, bankers are getting rich with your money, why not be making that money by yourself. I saw in the news yesterday that top executives in Nigerian banks made 2.3 billion naira in interim dividends for the last fiscal year. It is your money you’re just keeping in the bank doing nothing that they trade with and get rich off. Take charge of your investments, watch news channels like Bloomberg tv and always keep yourself informed with happenings in the world of finance.
I do not know what your home based friends do to get the One million naira. If he is a 9-5 abi 8-4 whichever you choose to call it and does not have time to monitor any investment, his best bet will to put his money where even if he doesn't gain he would not loose all.

Investment is good if one can devote time to study and understand it. Then, you will have at least some level of certainly. There are risk takers and risk averse investors. Your home based friends seem not to want to take the risk for the reason best known to them.

Mind you the CEO's and top bankers that earn such dividend from the banks are heavily invested there. They do not just earn it because they have their savings there. If there were to be staff without any stake, their only entitled would have been their salaries, allowances and other pecks the office have to offer. Dividend are for share holders and all the shareholders will get their share of dividend depending on the amount of share they hold with the bank. Even if you have a separate business or investment, so long as you transact through them they will make money.

I have noticed that lots of human does not want hear anything if it is not in their favour.. Around February - March this year(2020) there were calls on this thread for people who can to convert their investment to dollar inorder beat the pending devaluation and inflation as a result of the economic situation fuelled by Covid -19. I believe those who could at that time did it and those that think otherwise didn't nobody died. Now there is a contrary call. If you believe you act on it. If you don't, hold your dollar position. You own your dollar and you are also responsible for your decisions.

If at the end of the day it played to your favour, fine. It doesn't, next time you will know what to do. There is no need over flogging it.

Hello do someone get charged for receiving money?

I did a mobile app transfer of 15k from UBA to GTB
I was charged N28 by UBA and GTB charging N100 at the receiving end

WHY?
That's not a scam. You where charged for stamp duty by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Start listening to news and try to acquaint yourself with happenings in your country before they tell you fuel is N160 per litre in the filling station and you will come here shouting scam.

The Government has directed banks in Nigeria to charge N50 on any transaction ( transfers to any other account except your other account with same bank, deposit to third party account etc) that is more than N10,000.

Your opinion.

USD under 400 is not sustainable.
The way you guys say this things with so much certainty makes me wonder if it was not the same USD that sold for almost about N520 and then fell to N360 in a few weeks back then. Sometimes all what you know may not be enough to make you too certain for these things.

You guys should start putting caveat sha. Though we are the internet and people are also supposed to be responsible for their own investment decisions. However, lots of people invest with due diligence and once it doesn't work. They try to put the blame on their influencers. You should take note of that.

As seen in the topic, I have two friends that travelled to the U.S, One travelled 2014 and the other one 2017, though before they left we had a good vibes we were both close if not best friends before they left.

The one of 2014 stopped texting me at 2018 or so even when I wished him birthday wishes and same with the other. I knew this because I only texted them on Facebook and you will know when they read and not reply.

I don't hold any grudges against them though
Did you guys think it's normal? Like if I leave Nigeria, Would I also ignore my friends text even if they do not request anything from me?

Please can someone just explain to me so I won't see my friends (maybe former friends) as bad ones.
I do not think it is all friends that travel abroad that forgets their friends back home. However, some people start avoiding friends when they go their for various reasons. Some of those reasons are:

1. Immediately people travel abroad for job/hustling, some friends back home have found their ATM turning themselves to beggers before the friends. They will hardly call that friend just to know how he/she is faring. Any call to that friend will be to get something from the friend. That is tiring and may want to make the friend avoid the persons.

2. Some friends back home sometimes try to use their friends over there to complete their crime. Scammers and yahoo boys especially. Will want to used that friend particulars to obtain money from their victims. If you have a clear conscience and a legal hustle why will you want to continue picking the calls of such friends?

3. Sometime, there are issues of time difference depending on the country. Except you schedule time to call if you call somebody in the USA around 10-11am Nigerian time, he/she is likely to be sleeping and thus would not be able to answer you.

4. Strong work ethic in those countries could affect your communications too unless scheduled. Some employers in some countries does not tolerate wasting of their paid time for activities not related to what they paid for.

5. The feeling of not measuring up. Sometimes the picture painted to them before leaving Nigeria turns out not to be true. Thus, they start struggling and because they do not want people to know, they start avoiding calls and messages as it may bring out clues.

6. Some go there commit crime and get incarcerated. You as a friend will be the last thing he/she would think about except if he sense/believe you can render any kind of help.

I believe different individuals will have their own reasons. But as it is usually said, 10 friends cannot continue to be friends for 10 years. This is because there will surely be events, happenings and situations that will affect your plans, growth and aspirations.

Boss, did you go to a school better than a mushroom university? I always struggle to comprehend your posts because your writing is honestly not the best. I never mentioned it because I assumed you were illiterate to be honest and I didn’t want to sound like I was making fun of an illiterate that was doing well in life. But to see you calling an American University a mushroom school makes me want to know if you even went to a university. If so, please state your alma mater so we can avoid that school.
To be very honest with you, majority of the students that goes to Benin Republic, Ghana, Cameroon and all these Neighbouring countries to school are actually those that could not get admission in Nigerian Universities. Except for those Nigerians that were born, bread and school there who decided to return to their fatherland. To also be very honest with you, I have never if not that he mentioned those names I have never heard any of those.

That said, discussions here are actually targeted towards a particular purpose. Yes, education is part of it. However, it is limited to investment and financial education. Many people here have attested to not going to any tertiary institutions but can write even better than some that have gone. In all the language we understand is how to make more money legally. If you like write it in Yoruba, Igbo or Hausa someone will interpret for those that doesn't.

If your alma mater is Oxford or Cambridge and it doesn't better your existence or upgrade your thinking order than writing good English then it is not worth it.

Personally, I would have valued this your particular contribution if you gave reasons why Nigeria should continue to spend it's hard earned Forex reserve on those schools. I may or may not agreed with the reasons but it would be that you have contribution toward the discussion.

Like your in-law said, she did not give any wife. It would have been a better situation if you both were cool, trying to work things out and get married. However, since the situation is no longer palatable. It is better you allow her return to her parents.

Decide on a fixed amount that would be okay to take care of your baby and be paying as upkeep monthly. As rightly pointed out by the family coupled with her actions of not trying to reason with you she is not your wife this, you are not responsible for her so you should let her go.

Focus on rebuilding yourself while she should do same too. If you are destined to be together you would be back again and by then I believe you would know how to value each other.
