danvon:First, Norway does not have capital punishment anymore that is why he has a term of imprisonment that can be extended. Nigeria on the other hand practices capital punishment so the proper thing to do is put those criminal terrorists on trial and have them condemned to death by hanging or firing squad. If the court is lenient enough to sentence them to life imprisonment, that bottom line is that they will remain incarcerated which is what Norway did. Secondly, the setting/structure of Norwegian prisons is one that will actually encourage rehabilitation. Than man was put in a 3-room cell with TV, Laptop and exercise equipment but no internet access. Does Nigeria have such a prison? Maybe those run by DSS for high-level political prisoners. Bottom line is that terrorists should remain incarcerated and not released back into the society without even a trial and conviction, essentially no punishment! That is absolutely insensitive and even lends credence to the allegations that this government in fact sponsors and harbours northern terrorists! Where is the justice in that and how do you explain that to civilians and innocent members of communities that have been destroyed by those terrorists? It is only that we run a semi-military dictatorship that is not answerable to the electorate that supposedly voted them into office. Why was this rehabilitation and reintegration option not offered IPOB who aren't even terrorists as they are not in the business of mass murder and destruction like Boko haram? 2 Likes |

danvon: Today, Breivik sits in a prison outside Oslo. He was given a twenty-one-year term that can be extended indefinitely—Norway’s maximum sentence. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/05/25/the-inexplicable The man was arrested, put through a trial, sentenced and now serves a 21 year term that can be extended indefinitely. Does that look to you like someone who was arrested, 'rehabilitated' and 'reintegrated' into the same society he assaulted/offended within a matter of months? I wonder what point you are trying to prove. That he is alive and in prison is because he surrendered to the police immediately they arrived the scene of his crime. If he had resisted or was still actively shooting he would have been gunned down instantly! 1 Like |

When you compare Nigeria with Norway on this issue you appear just a little bit dense. Norway has very low crime rated because it enjoys very high development levels. Besides, the few crimes committed in Norway are nowhere near terrorist related. If you want to know how Norway treats terrorists, go and swear allegiance to any globally proscribed terrorist groups then commit acts of terrorism on their soil. I hope you live to tell the story of 'nice treatment' over there. danvon: 7 Likes |

danvon: First, you do not persecute a criminal, he is already guilty. Secondly, you cannot be directing resources to self-confessed criminals when the victims are dying in their large numbers without basic care. Who deserves the rehabilitation more? Innocent, displaced citizens including women and girls or hardened criminals who should be kept locked away for life? Even if the government intends to rehabilitate those that might have been brain-washed or lured into terrorist acts, they fact is that they have been exposed to evil; they come from communities and they are known! How do you justify their release without punishment when their victims have next to no hope and some are even dead? Where is the restitution and reconciliation that should be part of such a process? More importantly, such 'repentant' terrorist should remain isolated from the general society until the war is completely over. It is premature now because whatever lured them into such activities is still alive and active, they are already well trained in arms handling and the art of terror so the moment they face any resistance (eg. non-acceptance by the society which is normal) or hardship, they easily pick up arms and head back to the pits, better revived and energised; that is if they did not just form repentance to take a break from all the dust in the forest! There is no positive to such heartless 'rehabilitation' exercise by the Nigerian military and government. 4 Likes |

The Army and other privileged liars keep claiming that they are not being enlisted into the military or any other para-military agencies so it is best to go directly to the root which is that they do not deserve to walk free after terrorizing and murdering innocent Nigerians, displacing others from their homes. At least the so-called operation safe corridor and deradicalisation is in the public domain and they cannot deny it. Awol1: 2 Likes |

Calling on an incompetent president to resign is now tagged hate speech. The senate president is such a tool! It is a shame that one cannot make a demand of the president again without fear of victimisation by security agencies that ought to protect lives and properties of all citizens. Ha! Then Buhari, Adesina and crew will wonder why Transparency International has ranked Nigeria lower? It is the height of corruption that an FG appointee will not have basic, requisite documentation verified before assuming office and yet they claim DSS and Police must vet all nominees before appointments! So who let the ball drop at some point? That is the corruption that drags the country down! Someone somewhere would have known her deficiency, decided to cover it up or approved it and then hold that office/appointee to ransom for illicit gain! |
Politics / Re: ‘Southeast has highest rate of abuse’ - NHRC by freeze001(f): 4:22pm On Jan 28, 2020 |
It may well be that in addition to high cases of abuse/SGBV, there is also more openness, awareness, exposure and access to channels for reporting such incidences than in other regions especially the North where the culture of silence, ignorance and religious oppression reign supreme. All the same, rather than unnecessary denials and comparisons, we should thoroughly examine ourselves and be determined to correct violent tendencies in our society in the East. Such issues are contrary to our innate make-up and high regard for life, health and the environment that our fathers are known for. It is time to go back to the drawing board, ascertain where we veered off, what breeds these high incidences of violence and curtail them drastically. 2 Likes |

Sirjamo: First, the fact that these service chiefs have over-stayed their ages of retirement is causing a glut in the growth/promotion of other qualified officers in all the security services. You can be sure that there is a lot of disaffection which can lead to anything from loss of loyalty to full on complicity in the crime of terrorism by acting as moles and informants. There are rules guiding these processes and they should not be jettisoned just because someone (the President) feels comfortable with certain appointees. Secondly, no matter how well they have performed (highly debatable), there is something called burnout and complacence. There is also the need to inject fresh blood, vigour and ideeas and this needs to happen otherwise the recent spike in attacks will most likely continue. It is also necessary to change the players so there is no room for routine which may spell danger as certain interests are likely to be placed over national security. 1 Like |

WiLdFLame: Everything in Lagos today was done by the Federal Government. Somehow they believe that they can get away with it, retain what is their own, let the rest of us all go and wallow in poverty. Good luck to them. Lagos is the sole reason y'all make noise about the SW and some fake hospitality. Being a former national capital coupled with the special focus of the FG what has made Lagos what it is along with the clear, significant efforts of other Nigerians that are forced to live and work there because till date, it has the only functional seaport. Protect the region any way you can, that is absolutely critical but read and see what those you ordinarily love to lick their arses have to say about your region. amc: You miss the point. It is not unconstitutional and that is why no one has any serious qualms about the CJTF. Beyond this, some Northern states have other vigilante, neighbourhood outfits similar to Amotekun and they carry weapons. They were also formed without any one bothering them because it is community policing. The reason these comparisons now arise is because of the odious hypocrisy displayed by the Northern interests. Apart from Hisbah which is religious-based and backed by state laws, these other groups have no legal backing so why the special interest and unnecessary noise in the South? The Rivers State House of Assembly passed a law establishing a neighborhood watch sometime in 2018 (see links added), yet the Army disbanded them and branded it illegal so what exactly is the problem? https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/wike-vows-illegal-militia-training-camp-shut-down-by-army-will-continue-operation/4eqdc61 https://punchng.com/soldiers-stop-rivers-vigilance-corps-training/ @the bold I agree with you to the extent that our representatives at federal level and even state governors are selfish. Like this issue of Rivers I just mentioned, I see no reason why the state allowed the issue to die upon the interference of the Army without a spirited legal fight considering that the organization is backed by state law. |
