The notion that Yaradua is the glue that holds this country together is ludicrous.  The masses of this country conduct their daily activities as if we lack leadership, intermittent power supply, school strikes, corrupt police force, no healthcare etc.  I am sitting on the sidelines with my arms folded waiting for a conclusion that will remove him from the equation.  His return is only going to bring back the status quo, we need a course to travel.

forget the air hostess, but seriously, are Nigerian aviation officials up to their task?  neighboring airports can not communicate amongst each other and planes are flying in the sky without radar equipment sounds like a serious issue.

Gov, 9 others in air mishap - Air hostess collapse
By Jackson Udom
Sunday, November 1, 2009

A chartered aircraft, which is a relatively brand new Hawker 900, was conveying the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Barrister Godswill Obot Akpabio, to Lagos on Friday escaped what would have been a tragic air mishap in recent times, shortly after take-off from the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar.

Governor Akpabio, who was travelling on an official assignment with the permanent secretary, Government House, Mr. Etekamba Umoren and his director of protocol, Mr. Aniekpeno Ukpanang said the escape was by the divine grace of God.

Sunday Tribune gathered that the mishap resulted in an air hostess collapsing inside the aircraft just as the pilot tried to manoeuvre the aircraft from colliding with another aircraft which was taking off from the Port Harcourt International Airport.

Recounting his ordeal and that of his principal inside the chartered aircraft to Sunday Tribune, the Director of Protocol, Mr Aniekpeno Mkpanang said, “the aircraft took off at the Calabar airport en route Port Harcourt to Lagos. As we were going above the airspace in Port Harcourt, which is the air route, we experienced a sudden drop of about 5000 feet. We tried to go up but to no avail. It was madness and everybody onboard after that experience fell ill while the air hostess collapsed on the floor of the aircraft.”

A visibly shaken Mkpanang stated further that, “when we thought it was all over, we prayed to God and handed over our souls to Him. The Governor and other passengers were yet to recover from the trauma as I speak to you. But immediately the aircraft got a little stability, the co-pilot, Mr Ritman, a white man, emerged from the cockpit and went straight to His Excellency and said ‘ Sir we have just escaped what is called in aviation, a near air mishap that would have involved a collision with another aircraft.’

At this point, Mkpanang said, “the Governor called for more explanation from the pilot and he said, “Sir, while we were flying at about 24000ft above the sea level, there was an aircraft which was above us coming towards Calabar and billed to descend, and it was descending right inside our aircraft. But we have an equipment called GCAS which is like a radar which would show the pilot the position and distance of other aircraft and their levels but most Nigerian planes are flying blind because they don’t have the equipment.”

Mr Ritman stated further that, “even if they have it, it ceased to function because checks on aircraft are not taken seriously and yet, they allow them to enter the airspace, which is wrong.”

Speaking further, Mr Mkpanang disclosed that, “ it is either the aircraft that was coming on us did not have the equipment or was malfunctioning and as a result oblivious of the presence of our aircraft. Suddenly the warning system in our aircraft turned on advising that our aircraft go down because the approaching aircraft was crashing into us. At about 400metres to our aircraft we made a mad descend because the upcoming plane was a bigger one, and was faster than ours. We were once again advised to go up and in that process, the plane got stalled and we had a free fall until the engine came up again.”

According to him, “ we now radioed the PH Control Tower not to allow the plane to land and even if it lands, it should be seized. But the Control Tower told us that the aircraft was on its way to Calabar. We asked them to radio Calabar and to the chagrin of everybody, we were told that they have no communication link with Calabar except through GSM. At this point, the governor shouted and shouted. Thereafter we were able to get to Calabar where we learnt the plane was a CBN chartered flight. And for reasons known to the pilot, it took-off immediately it landed.”

When contacted, Governor Akpabio confirmed the incident saying, “if this had happened to a fully loaded passenger aircraft, that manoeuvre that made for easy escape could not have been possible because of the weight and it would have crash landed. The incident can be compared to what happened between ADC and Tria airlines.”

Akpabio stated that he has intimated the leadership of the NCAA of the incident and he immediately ordered that the aircraft be grounded on arrival in Lagos for proper investigation, adding that “the authority concerned should find out if the said aircraft has the GCAS equipment and whether other aircraft are flying in Nigeria without it.”

they only want to believe the negative,as if we dont have suicide bombs in india, terrorism and corruption in indonesia

but indians and asians too are going home

when i first came here and i told ppl Nigeria would eclipse South Africa as the largest economy in Africa in 5yrs or less, they look at me like am mad

if u watch the first video,u will see what the lady is saying is that the private sector has taken over mostly
even if yar adua is dull, and uninspiring, the young hungry proffesionals in lagos and other cities are taking over the business and economic activity that used to be from only the govt

one other thing, even though our govt is not perfect,it is way better than tons of other african countries that have one man dictatorships,eg egypts mubarak, cameroons biya, gabons bongo, libyas ghaddafi, musevini in uganda, zenawi of ethiopia, dos santos in angola and so on

in Nigeria we have managed to make it impossible for one man to rule us forever, that means people like fashola, soludo and the rest have a chance to become leaders someday,i am hopeful for the future of NIGERIA,SOUTHAFRICA and AFRICA
Bro, your enthusiasm for the country is infectious and inspiring. Keep up the good work!

Injured Arsenal Star Is A Placenta Forward

10:59am UK, Tuesday November 17, 2009

Adam Arnold, Sky News Online
A Premier League star is going to unusual lengths to help him recover faster from injury - having placenta fluid massaged into his leg.

Netherland's Robin van Persie lies injured on the pitch

Van Persie clutches his ankle after the challenge by Giorgio Chiellini

Arsenal's Robin van Persie is flying to Serbia for the radical medical treatment by a female doctor called Marijana Kovacevic, who is said to have amazing healing powers.

The Holland forward has been ruled out for at least six weeks after being injured during Saturday's friendly against Italy.

He suffered partially-torn ankle ligaments in a heavy challenge from defender Giorgio Chiellini.

Arsenal confirmed Van Persie will return to London later this week to continue his rehabilitation and are happy with the care of the Dutch Football Association.

But the 26-year-old is ready to go a step further to help the healing process by flying to Serbia - with the approval of his north London club.

It is thought a horse's placenta will be used in the treatment, with Van Persie aiming to recover within a month.

Giorgiio Chiellini of Italy tackles Robin van Persie of Holland

The tackle that led to the injury

"I will fly to the Balkans to meet with a female doctor who helped (PSV Eindhoven midfielder) Danko Lazovic," he told Dutch television programme Studio Voetbal.

"She is vague about her methods but I know she massages you using fluid from a placenta. I'm going to try. It cannot hurt and, if it helps, it helps.

"I have been in contact with Arsenal physiotherapists and they have let me do it."

But doctors in England are pessimistic that the treatment will do any good.

Dr Carol Cooper told Sky News Online: "It's an unproven remedy. It's wacky but it's not going to do any harm.

"Some footballers will try almost anything to get better more quickly."

She explained that the placenta contains proteins and the thought behind the treatment was probably that these proteins would be rubbed into the skin and reach the damaged ligaments.

But she said this was almost impossible - suggesting that physiotherapy would be the best way forward for Van Persie.

The placenta is the afterbirth delivered from a mother following the birth of a baby.

The GP added that some mothers eat the placenta because it contains protein and iron.

How ironic that the future of America is the Nigeria of today we cannot see.

I watched a program not too long ago were a group of people reportedly some of the foremost thinkers in America put forward their vision of future America.  The consensus was that individual, family and community self-sufficiency was the way to go. These experts in fields as divers as economics, biotechnology and architecture etc believed that environmental changes and resources issues  would bring about a world whereby it was best in the interest of America to withdraw as far as possible from a reliance on international trade but concentrate on national trade.  They visualised a world were individuals grew their own food, provided their own power, produced their own water by a verity of means such De-salianation,  boreholes, rain water etc.  They visualised the tearing down of many of these skyscrapers and the replacing of them with forests, other skyscrapers would be turned into futuristic farms managed by the communities that live in them.

Not least because it could be beyond our ability but Nigeria shouldn’t be placing so much emphasis on National water supply to all homes and national electricity supply to all homes and national ambulance service and national this and national that. Perhaps like the America vision highlighted above it is not such a bad thing that people in Nigeria have sinkholes and have to find their way around things because of government incompetence but only bad because there has not been the vision to help make self-sufficiency work.  Maybe we should not be looking to erect concrete jungles just superficially to be like America but looking to tear them down and instead concentrate on landscapes that incorporate buildings with the natural world.

I agree with with you 100%. This vision for a future America is already being activated in various parts of the country. I just watched a program yesterday whereby New England communities are locally growing foods they typically import. As a result, they have built a robust highly durable food system that generates plenty of cash and also fresh organic food for the locals to consume. Even in the middle of concrete jungles like Bedstuy, Brooklyn I have witnessed farmers growing foods in their backyard and selling the produce to the locals. I think a return to basics is making a big comeback.

Juande Ramos, Felipe Scolari, Avram Grant, Louis van Gaal and a host of others will be dying to take the job from NFA.

If we get the right manager, we should be OKAY.
I think we need a manager thats going to begin work immediately, most importantly, the core of the team should be home based players that are hungry and skillful.  Certain players like Peter, Martins, and Mikel can be included.

wirinet:
Thank you my brother, my people loves playing to the gallery, the follow what ever fad the west is into, without weighing the implications on our own situation.

There are far cheaper sources of producing electricity in Nigeria. The whole of the Niger Delta can be turned into one big electricity generating industry, They can produce electricity for the Whole of west Africa. Also I wonder if there are no other damming opportunities on our rivers. I hear the contract the damming  of Mambila falls had been awarded but yet to be executed by the last administration. Also i wonder why we had not dammed any section of the River Benue.
Truth is our leaders are only good at sucking, they cant do anything right even if they tried their best. When are we going to get competent hands in position of power?
BusinessRe: Nigeria To Generate Electricity From Nuclear Technology by Gekko(m): 6:07pm On Nov 12, 2009
wirinet:
Nuclear Energy is not the cheapest way to produce electricity, especially for a developing country with serious man-power problems.

The cheapest way to to produce electricity is through hydro power, you do not require fuel, you just dam a river and install turbines. Then the next cheapest way to produce electricity especially for a country like Nigeria that is awash with oil and gas is through fossil fuels. For crude, the only cost you incure is the cost of prospecting and extracting, and then refining. The crude itself is free. Natural gas on the other hand does not require refining, you only need to pipe it to a gas turbine and electricity is produced. All the gas that is flared in Nigeria is enough to provide electricity for Nigeria if not West Africa. But the government is more interested in piping the Gas to Europe. Maybe they will produce electricity and export back to us at three time the price as is done with crude.

The problem with nuclear is the fuel, the plutonium required to run the turbines. To produce plutonium our self is a very very technical issue and if we conceive of it today, it will take us over ten years to build the plant and  purify enough uranium to produce the fuels. The cost of this would be astronomical compared to the cost of hydo or gas ( sorry these fuels are virtually free).  Then the will be the diplomatic dimensions, because the same equipment that can produce nuclear fuel can also be used to produce weapons, and do not think the west or our neighbours  would be comfortable with that.

Then the main problems is managing a nuclear electricity generating plant, the extremely high safety requirements and the problem of how to dispose of its wastes, and believe the the wastes are numerous, every thing that comes in contact with radioactive material is waste, from the water to cool the plant, to bolts and nuts that was used . and disposing of it is tricky, because these materials can remain lethal for tens if not hundreds of thousands of years.  Even disposal of radioactive waste by the west is shrouded in secrecy.

The bottom line is if we are having problems dealing with relatively easy technology of crude oil refinery, hydro-power plant and gas power plant, how do we hope to handle a highly complex technology of nuclear power plant. Even at exorbitant cost, we are not able to perform normal turn around maintainance on our refineries and they keep catching fire. What will the happen to a nuclear power plant in the hands of the same people.
You make an interesting point in regards to Hydro being a cheap source and probably also quicker to implement as well.  I just discovered this morning that Brazil runs the largest Hydro dam in the world.  Built just 5years ago, the Itaipu dam generating capacity is 14GW.  This trumps the measly 6000MW that the FG has been talking about.  The Itaipu DAM lights up several states in Brazil, especially big cities like RIo and Sao Paulo while supplying 90% of Paraguay electricity.
I dont get it!  what the hell are we doing in this country?,   this dam was built not long ago, 40,000 people were employed, it now serves as a tourist sight, it produces more energy than 10 nuclear plants etc etc
