Kai, the average naija guy don suffer finish, the game suits old useless men who steals all our wealth so they enjoy themselves to the max.

Perhaps GEJ can issue an ultimatum on champagne to level the game a little bit to small players.

you folks are missing the point.
the scam in nigeria is not merely the prices, its the total package itself, Qos especially.

when you say u pay 24 dollars or pounds for broadband abroad, u need to realise 95% internet users in nigeris have never seen broadband speed in their lives yet they pay more than u do.
i stand to be corrected but the highest speed in nigeria is 3g which is just being introduced by a few like swift. hitherto we have peeps like mtn with 384 kbps SHARED. thus when a naija guy creams his pants over speed he probably just clocked 150 kbps for ten secs.

add this to 50 percent downtime, you begin to get the picture. so wen we complain about the prices etc, PLS STOP DEMONSTRATING your MUMU BY TRYING TO JUSTIFY IT.

there is no excuse for selling people third rate internet at first rate prices.

oh and i forgot, data caps, time limits. like that fellow proudly advertising his starcomms 6500, he forgot to add he has just 100 hrs usage. thats about 4 days 24/7 usage. so u can be sure he rations his time in the net.
and the 16k glo plan is limited to 18gb of data, u dare not stream.

anyway, believe it or not, internet is still regarded as a luxury hereabouts. pity
this is a grim picture you just painted and its such a shame that our leadership is not sophisticated and savvy enough to take appropriate action with urgency.

From my understanding, to construct each of the Red and Blue lines costs roughly $1.5 billion or so. Lagos State seems to be the one bearing the costs of this.

Then the concessionaires are responsible for buying the rolling stock (i.e., the railcars) and several other things and maintaining over a 25 year period. So these cars being inspected in Toronto, I guess the concessionaire will buy?

I'm not quite sure how Lagos is financing the construction. Their contractor is CCECC, but I never heard about them borrowing money for the project. . . yet I'd also be surprised if they are just paying for it straight up out of revenue.
If Lagos state is spending billions on infrastructure why are they allowing concessionaires to bring in second hand trains to run on tracks, makes no sense to me.

This is an economically viable venture, Baba Suwe can sell this project to Warren Bufett with a pair of slippers on so why are we selling ourselves short?

After reading the 10pages of this thread, l have observed a few things.

1)Fashola should be applauded for even having the vision to "attempt" to give us Light Rail system in Lagos.
What are his likes in other states doing with their state allocations? Three Gbosa for BRF.

2.) Looking at the "trains" BRF is inspecting (in those NYSC Boots! grin ), the TRUTH is that they are VERY< VERY OLD FASHIONED. In fact, someone provided a link on page one (skyscrapper.com or so) which shows that the Canadians were praying that someone will be foolish enough to come and take the junk away. Forget the N.York Argument, America is known for good roads and solid cars, not an efficient and modern Rail system!

Please "Read" that provided link on page one, please do, for God's sake!

3.) I have seen Rail system (the fast ones that do over 500Km/hr) and l have seen "Lighter Rail or intra-city Rail" that commute between streets-to-streets. The Light Rails dont do over 35-50Km/hr.

I have provided a picture of both scenarios below. Both are in use ALL OVER EUROPE, especially very efficient ones in Germany, Netherlands, France, and Ireland.

My take is that, "IF WE MUST EAT A FROG, LET US EAT ONE WITH EGGS"!

We dont have to acquire the trains Canada "started with", 50yrs ago!. Lets us jump on the Bus in 2011.

We can link a place like Ireland (it was installed by a French Company) and under-study their Rail system or we can go direct to France.

We need a modern, efficient and sturdy Rail system (compare this to what the Chineese sold to OBJ, during his tenure and till today, they are still grounded! grin ) not one that will just pack-up after one year because we cant maintain it!

The Light Rail system is a brilliant idea and we must applaud BRF for it (Dont worry, just to "look and copy good things", takes a miracle in Nigeria wink )

BUT PLEASE BRF, DONT GO THE ROUTE OF OBJ, HIS CHINEESE RAIL ENGINES STILL LITTER THE PORTS AND THE RAIL YARD AT EBUTE-METTA!
They are non-starters.
ASK yourself: WHY are the Canadians doing away with it

PLEASE GOD, MAKE HIM LISTEN TO REASON!
good contribution.  this is the point i was attempting to make in my earlier posts.  We commend Fashola but these trains are unsavory and i'm not convinced he's getting value  for the amount of money being spent.  These trains are an eyesore to be running above ground in a city trying to achieve mega-city status.  Im starting to wonder what the quality of the Eko-Atlantic city is going to look like going by this tasteless standard.

From the same article you posted,

N70bn = $466 million.

Around the same $500 million we are talking about for the same line under construction.

The 3 billion is an estimate for a full scale metro system scattered all over the state,

The facts are not on your side so quit the bad bele and gross display of ignorance.
Print version Lagos’ N450 Billion Light Rail Project Takes Off March
The long awaited N450 billion ($3 billion) Lagos’ Light Rail project will take off in March, Governor Babatunde Fashola has said.

He said the design for the project, which is already at the final stage, would be completed and submitted by the contractors handling the project’s design next month.

The rail project consists of seven rail lines. Two of the proposed lines have been approved for construction.

The Blue line would link Okomaiko to Marina through Mile 2, while the Red line would link Agege, Mushin, Iddo and end at Marina.

The state government has secured some external funds for the project, about $1.5 billion to build the infrastructure of the rail project and allow interested private firms to operate the lines as done with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

When completed, the rail project would carry millions of passengers per day while the concessionaires would manage the project for a period of 25 years after which it would be handed over to the government.

According to the governor, who spoke at an economic summit in Lagos yesterday, the decision of the government to commit huge sum of money on the project was justifiable, insisting that the issue of poverty could not be dealt with without addressing transportation problems.

“The whole essence of human endeavour is to look for food, shelter and clothing and he would do that by getting wealth and running businesses. Now if the cost of transporting yourself to work eats half of your wages, you would stay poor,” he said.

Fashola also said that with several projects ongoing in the state, better days lie ahead for the people of Lagos in terms of provision of improved infrastructure and services for the people by the present administration.

He stated that many of the lofty projects being embarked upon by the state would reach its fruition this year with more positive impact, stressing that one of the things that stood him in good stead for the job was that he became a governor after having been an insider in the running of the government of the state.

He said on assumption of office, one of the main pre-occupation of his administration was to reverse the infrastructural deficit of almost 30 years by making infrastructure renewal its first goal.

The governor added that part of the strategies for achieving this was in dedicating 60 percent of the State budget to infrastructure renewal and setting strict guidelines which encompassed setting of timelines and deadlines on all policies and programmes which must be met.

On the issue of resistance to the payment of taxes, Fashola said if there were any forms of resistance, it was in terms of pessimism of the people about the efficiency of the system and about past broken promises.

He disclosed that by the end of 2010, about 25 kilometres of the Lekki- Epe Express Way would have been completed, assuring that the road would be completed by 2011.

Fashola further disclosed that the Itire-Okota Link Bridge, Funsho Willimas Avenue and Igbo Elerin road would be completed in 2010.

Governor Fashola while justifying the need to identify and protect the locations of cables laid across the state, said the state through the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) had asked telecom operators in the state to supply their work plans so that the state could work on it with its contractors to avoid incidences of cable cutting during construction.

In addition, Fashola said as at the last count, over 20, 000 people had benefited from the micro credit finance of the State which according to him has also created over 150,000 jobs.

On his re-election in 2011, Fashola said no decision had been made by the Action Congress, the party on whose platform he was elected.

The lagos state i know has only one rail line(stand to be corrected anyway). The line that runs from Agege via Ikeja, Oshodi to Iddo or Yaba. Fash is doing a good work but i have a question. Is the rail line for these trains(light or heavy) in place.?
I think the answer is NO. since the routh is diff and the oparetor is diff also. Have they stated building the rail line(s). Which one should come first?(rail or train). To construct the rail line will take more than 4 yrs when you include the nigeria factor the yr gets longer.
All those trains(Street cars/Tram) shown on the pictures above runs on electricity, do we have enough supply in Nigeria to power the trains as at when needed.
I am of the beleive that anything worth doing is worth doing well. I will not condemn of eulogise the project as i do not have the full details.
construction has already begun for this project

Mr Donlittle, im not here to trade insults or abuse anyone.  What exactly is your beef? The basis of my arguments is simple
Look at my previous picture & links to the Lagos rail website and compare that to the refurbished hand me down being inspected by your dear governor.

What difference does it make whether it is light rail or subway? I actually don't even know what the difference is myself. Does it matter?
What would you have suggested they do? Go for the more expensive option? If so, where do you get the money for it?
Honestly i'm no transportation expert so am i'm eager for someone knowledgeable to weigh in but i've ridden light rails in several cities from San Francisco to Madrid and they look nothing like those cars being inspected.
with that said, from my observation, generally light rails are suitable to mixed traffic use which is why they are more they are more sleek in design since they need to operate in an existing street environment.

TravelRe: In Pictures Fashola Inspects Trains, Facilities For Lagos Light Rail In Canada by Gekko(m): 5:01pm On May 16, 2011
This has nothing to do with bad belle, we all are entitled to criticize govt.  We all agree that Fashola is ahead of others but that doesn't make him exempt from criticism.

The state was promised light rail cars which is even evident in the mock up designs that was presented but instead you are getting refurbished subway cars
thats suited for heavy rail metro systems.  I'm not complaining at all i guess something is better than nothing but this should raise your eyebrow a little .

They obviously opted for an inexpensive option and i'm wondering why?
TravelRe: In Pictures Fashola Inspects Trains, Facilities For Lagos Light Rail In Canada by Gekko(m): 3:59pm On May 16, 2011
I must say i'm disappointed at the standard of trains being inspected in these pics but i guess its a matter of wanting filet mignon but only chuck steak available  undecided

Besides i thought light rails are usually more modern looking in appearance, these rail-cars looks several generations old.

Even assuming USD5milion p/mile, Lagos - Ekiti must be about 150 miles. That's USD750 million. With the Nigerian factor, the final cost will be at least double that figure, if not triple it.

Now tell me, where will Ekiti state find it's contribution towards this project, when it is struggling to pay the 18k naira (USD120) minimum wage to its workers. And then its yearly contribution to the maintenance of the line? Lol, you need to understand the hard facts - policy should be made with the head, not the heart.

You mentioned Lagos - Kano rail line. Makes sense to link 2 of Sub-Sahara's 2 biggest cities. But Lagos- Ekiti? Even Nigeria's famously dubious bankers, who will be called upon to finance such project, will laugh this off. It is not commercially viable.
I find your posts insightful! If Ekiti is within such a short distance to Lagos then I agree that we can do without a rail line at the moment. It seems we have a problem prioritizing our developmental needs.

Why not just expand and fix the roadways and rely on inter modal containers to move our goods for same-day deliveries. Education, Water, Health and urban planning are areas that we can no longer neglect, lets fix the basics.

The poor people don't have to conduct more than 150,000/1 million in transactions per day with banks -- they can however conduct in their numbers 150,000/1 million in transactions with sole proprietors/small businesses and corporate entities.

Imagine the store owner at the corner store whose customers are only able to pay in cash since cash is what they have -- at the end of the day the store owner counts his till and finds he has made over Naira 250,000(this is actually his sales average per day) what does he do with this money? Deposit it in the bank, right(lets assume that)? Well, this policy says he cannot do that without penalty, every night. Do you get it now?
I get your point but i still believe CBN is making the right decision by forcing this policy.  The benefits of e-payments far outweigh the risk of being robbed of daily earnings especially since carrying 250K in Nigeria is not as convenient as tucking a credit in your front pocket.

My only qualm is forcing vendors to adopt an innovation that requires electricity/web/hardware etc is not conducive at the moment.

What has cash flow, or high rate of inflation to do with high case of money laundering? A Cashless society? Where have you actually ever seen that one? Even in Japan, people still pay for stuff, outside of the core cities, with cash. Abeg make we stop creating these utopic pictures of ideas. Also, with a cashless system comes more headaches like electronic fraud etc. Preventing and managing these things cost equally as much as it would, probably even more since banks, and governments need to be constantly ahead of the hackers and criminals, than it would cost to achieve same in a cash society.
And you think Operating without cash in a country where to date majority of the transactions happen underground(open, unmonitored market) will help do what exactly? Operating without cash in a country where 80% of the people live poor, and many are unable to afford bank accounts, let alone ATM cards, will do just what for the sole proprietors/small business owners who have to deal with these consumers?

We can make adjustments without monstrous policies like this one. Allow people change as they get to the point where they can-- we did it when cell phones came in-- didn't we?
of all these poor people, how many of them folks conduct more than 150,000 / 1 million in transaction per day? You make it sound as if cash is being eradicated all together.
