In a letter by the justices, seen by Peoples Gazette, members of Nigeria’s judiciary expressed their concerns over their budgetary allocations that have not been increased in the last four years.

“We are serving this Country diligently and to the best of our ability. We resolve disputes between the Executive and the Legislature including all manner of disagreements, between governments and individuals…It would be a tragedy if the Nigerian Public were to know that we are unable to resolve our own problems internally without going public,” the letter said. “The decision to write to you formally must be seen by Your Lordship as an effort on our part to preserve the dignity of the Judiciary and the respect accorded to us by Governments and people of Nigeria.”

The issues raised by the justices in the letter include the failure to replace dilapidated vehicles, accommodation problems, poor healthcare services at the Supreme Court clinic and poor electricity supply to the Supreme Court.

The justices also lamented the increase in electricity tariffs, no modified allowances to reflect the increase in diesel prices and lack of internet services in their chambers.

The justices called Mr Tanko’s attention to an internal memo served by the Chief Registrar, which notified judges that electricity would be supplied to the court between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily, due to the lack of diesel.

“The implication of this memo is that the Justices must finish their work and close before 4pm. Your Lordship with all due respect, this is the peak of the degeneration of the Court; it is the height of decadence, and clear evidence of the absence of probity and moral rectitude,” the Justices wrote. “Your Lordship, this act alone portends imminent danger to the survival of this Court and the Judiciary as an institution, which is gradually drifting to extinction.”

Other issues cover the non-signing of amended Court Rules, an abrupt stoppage of foreign workshops and training per annum for justices; and no provision of qualified legal assistants.

As such, the judges called Mr Tanko’s sense of responsibility into question, fearing a potential shutdown of the judiciary due to the raised concerns.

“Your Lordship, this is a wake-up call. Your Lordship must take full responsibility as our leader. You must not concession your responsibility to people who have no responsibility or stake in preserving and defending the dignity of the Institution,” the letter said. “Your Lordship occupies a position of leadership. We will not wait for the total collapse of the institution.”

The letter was delivered early in June, and Supreme Court sources confirmed to the Gazette that a commotion had broken out over it. They also said a committee that included traditional leaders has been trying to mediate the crisis.

When reached for comment, Ahuraka Isa, Special Assistant to Mr Tanko on media, said he would respond with a statement.

PoliticsObi's Resignation: A Fight Against Delegated Corruption On Behalf Of Nigerians. by Georgry(op): 5:30am On May 27, 2022
Peter Obi's Resignation: A Fight Against Delegated Corruption On Behalf of Nigerians, By Bolaji O. Akinyemi.

Unfortunately, we have witnessed first hand the ground gaining of corruption and the consolidation of non state actors' hold on the jugular of our nation like never before!

Just about two weeks ago I wrote an article titled; " *Nigeria: A Nation* *At The Mercy Of* *Political Party* *Delegates".** Where I established that the two leading political parties in Nigeria; APC and PDP as institutions cannot deliver the hope and yearnings of Nigerian electorates for a new Nigeria. That the system are constricpted against the evolution of productive leadership.

PDP, we were informed by APC in the build up to 2015 elections, that they spread corruption. Unfortunately, we have witnessed first hand the ground gaining of corruption and the consolidation of non state actors' hold on the jugular of our nation like never before!

I made definite assertions and offered some pieces of advice, some of which are; "If I were a delegate of APC, I won't shift support away from Osinbajo for a 100 million delegates' package from any Aspirant. His only challenge, will be how to triumph through the lies and propaganda that his party has become in public perspective, going forward to general elections...

I went on to say: "to the delegates in PDP, it is quite unbelievable that any sane mind will be confused at making a choice for their party. Nigeria's public system is a destroyer of merit and an enabler of corruption!

Worse in this system, are Customs Service and others like it, where slush has damaged the values of officers in the system. It is therefore incomprehensible that a debate will even take place at deciding who will be a better President between Obi, who as governor of Anambra, made an investment on behalf of his state from which the state is still earning income and Atiku, who as Vice President, supervised the sales of Aluminum Smelting Company, *an investment of* *2.5 billion dollars for* *250 million dollars!...*

Why we are still hoping that APC delegates will in the understanding of the time we are in give ticket to the likes of Osinbajo, Bakare against those who are prepared to buy Nigeria to rule her. Obi has finally interpreted the body language of delegates in PDP and has taken a bow from the party. With the allegation of change of delegates' list from Anambra state, it will be ridiculous for him to have stayed to contest against a principal he gave the respect of not visiting his state, Adamawa, during his consultations with delegates across the country! To know that such individuals lack decorum and will result to political brigandage in Obi's state and he still continues in the race would have been a betrayal of that thing for which he is being celebrated, intelligence!

I further affirmed that: "the exigencies of the time has taken this contest away from the likes of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his compatriot, Atiku Abubakar, the work to be done needs a younger, intelligent and competent personality with strength of character for leadership"!

If party delegates are lost to this reality, Nigerians are not! At no time in our political history has the awareness to break from political culture of cash and carry been this overwhelming!

Osinbajo will have a huge political marketing to do in case he wins the primary. He is no doubt the best in the race for APC, but a good product may find it difficult to be sold from a shop noted for fake products; I said.

Obi has been fantastic thus far, he has sold himself very well keeping to issues.

Our appeal is to the delegates of the devil and the deep blue sea to give us the best of their demons. As the saying goes, a known devil is better than an unknown angel!

The truth is, any disappointment in this regard may see the emergence of a new party in power. That new party will be the one presently positioned to harvest the fruit of a mismanaged APC and PDP primaries which seems inevitable!

May I plead with all party delegates to make the best aspirant their candidate, so that at the general election, the choice will be made from among their bests, I finally submitted.

Obi, like Osinbajo is a good product on a bad shelf. This move is sacrosanct, to give a good product a deserving shelf life and value. It is left to Osinbajo to stay with APC or take his value to a corresponding shelf!

Obi, in his resignation letter addressed to PDP National Chairman, left no one in doubt of his intention to still contest 2023 elections on the terms and conditions he had championed during his political consultations when he stated; "our national challenges are deep-seated and require that we each make profound sacrifices towards rescuing our country. My commitment to rescuing Nigeria remains firm, even if the route differs.

Obi's exit from PDP was a thought through, legendary step, APC boat will no doubt be rocked by the high-handedness of the cabal and their proxy in power and the fallout of that will obviously be harvest in the alliance Obi will be building in the next few days. A day advantage in politics can equal years of efforts if strategically utilized! One thing this season will be remembered for is that when the 3rd force was a mirage, Obi made it a miracle. Win or lose, our political architecture is finally re-designed. May I join all true nation builders to wish Peter Obi well going forward to *2023.

*Dr Bolaji O.** *Akinyemi* is the President, *Project* *Victory Call* *Initiative, (A.K.A PVC* *Naija).*

PoliticsAPC Clears AGF Malami For Kebbi Governorship Election by Georgry(op): 5:49pm On May 21, 2022
The screening committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cleared Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to contest the 2023 Kebbi governorship election.

A document seen by Peoples Gazette conveyed Mr Malami’s clearance to run, stirring controversy in the political sphere since the AGF had already withdrawn his governorship ambition, in order to retain his ministerial appointment.

President Muhammadu Buhari had last week issued a directive ordering all political appointees to resign before contesting in the forthcoming general elections.

It is unclear if Mr Malami has turned in his resignation to pursue his political quest in compliance with Mr Buhari’s directive or if he was waiting for the supreme court interpretation of the contentious section 84 (12) of the Electoral Act 2022.

The Gazette could not immediately reach Mr Malami for comments as his line and that of his spokesperson, Umar Gwandu, were not reachable at the time of filing this report.

A series of political appointees have sparked public outrage after they went against political norms to seek elective positions without resigning.

PoliticsI Eat Garri Three Times Daily, ‘poor’ Amaechi Begs Nigerians For Vote by Georgry(op): 8:25pm On May 20, 2022
Former transportation minister, Rotimi Amaechi, says he’s a better candidate to be voted president because he understands the sufferings of poor Nigerians.

“I can connect easily with the people. I wasn’t born into a rich family. My father was a poor man, and the only English my mother knows how to speak is pidgin English.

“I ate garri three times a day, and I still eat garri three times a day till today, so I know poverty”, Mr Amaechi said.

Mr Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers, made this assertion while canvassing for votes from All Progressives Congress delegates in Niger State on Thursday.

“I know what you’re suffering; I was governor of Rivers State when they were kidnapping two months old children, and I never slept until everybody slept. But in six months, we brought down insecurity in Rivers State,” the presidential aspirant added.

Mr Amaechi is not the first politician to project himself as one who understands the yearnings of Nigerians.

In 2011, former President Goodluck Jonathan, warmed his way into the hearts of many voters by portraying himself as a poor Otuoke boy who grew without shoes.

Similarly, President Muhammadu Buhari rode on the same sentiments to power in 2015, projecting himself as a poor candidate who had no house in Abuja and could not afford the APC presidential form.

PoliticsFarah Dagogo: Rivers Court Remands Lawmaker Granted Bail By Federal Court by Georgry(op): 3:23am On May 14, 2022
The prosecution of Mr Farah Dagogo for allegedly sponsoring cultism in Rivers State has taken a new twist, as a State High Court on Friday remanded him in a correctional centre.

He was remanded by the court on Friday, a day after a Federal High Court on Thursday ordered that he should be released on bail.

Dagogo is the lawmaker representing Degema-Bonny Federal Constituency of Rivers in the House of Representatives, and a governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He was reported to have been hand-lifted into the courtroom from a police vehicle during his arraignment before Justice Chiwendu Nwogu.

Justice Nwogu ordered that the governorship aspirant be remanded in a correctional centre because he appeared too weak to take his plea.

In his reaction, Dagogo’s media aide, Ibrahim Lawal, described the lawmaker’s remand as a pre-determine action by the Rivers State government and the police to disobey the order of the Federal High Court which initially granted him bail.

Dagogo was arrested on April 28 in Port Harcourt at the venue of the PDP governorship screening for the South-South states.

His arrest came after Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers declared him wanted for reportedly recruiting cultists to attack the state party secretariat during the screening of National and State Assembly aspirants.

The lawmaker was first arraigned before Justice A. I Amadi-Nna of a Magistrate Court on April 29, but the case was adjourned till May 9 for the charge to be amended following arguments that a Magistrate Court cannot hear matters relating to cultism.

On the adjourned date, the case was moved to the State High Court, but Dagogo could not be produced in court on the ground that he was being managed for some health challenges.

While the case was later adjourned till Monday next week for mention at the Rivers State High Court, the matter was brought forward for Friday.

CrimeJudge Pardons Couple For Stealing Wheat Flour, Raises Money In Court For Them. by Georgry(op): 3:35pm On May 12, 2022
Vincent Adet, the Senior Principal Magistrate of Kenya’s Mombasa law courts, has pardoned a couple accused of stealing a bale of wheat flour.

The couple, identified as Saumu Ali and Evans Odhiambo, were accused of stealing the flour worth Ksh. 1,980 from Grain Industries Ltd on April 13 at Shimanzi area in Mvita.

At a hearing in April, the pair pleaded guilty to the charges and told the court that they stole the wheat flour to fend for their kids, who had gone without food for several days.

The woman claimed she was going about her daily routine when her husband summoned her to assist him in carrying a bale of flour from a car parked nearby.

She pleaded that she only stole to feed her kids and begged for leniency, swearing never to steal again.

Odhiambo, on his part, claimed to be a scrap metal dealer who had lost his job as a result of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s scrap metal prohibition. He also admitted to stealing food for their children to feed.

In his ruling on Wednesday, May 11, Principal Magistrate Vincent Adet pardoned the accused, noting that he had considered the probation report presented before his court by the probation officer.

“On humanitarian grounds, especially for the first accused person, I have considered the circumstances under which the offence was committed and I sympathize with her situation, with three kids under her care and no source of income and am of the view that let buy her a bale of wheat flour and some meat for today,” K24 TV quoted Adet as saying.

The judge also encouraged members of the public, media, and court officials in attendance to donate any amount to Saumu’s food fund, and kicked off the effort by donating Ksh.1000..

You want them to continue in their position until 30 days to the general election so that they can use government money to fund the election, shebi you heard that Malami shared almost 200 vehicles? Telecommunication companies under the aegis of Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria, ALTON have recommended an upward adjustment in call and SMS tariffs to cushion the increasing cost of operation in Nigeria.

Making the proposal in a letter to the Nigerian Communications Commission, the association lamented that the cost of doing business in the country had risen by 40 per cent.

The association claimed that the telecommunications industry had been financially harmed by an economic downturn that occured in 2020 and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

They claimed the war had resulted in a 35 per cent increase in their operating expenses due to an increase in energy costs.

“ALTON considers it expedient for the telecommunications sector to undergo periodic cost adjustments through the commission’s intervention in order to minimise the impact of the challenging economic issues faced by our members,” the association said.

ALTON suggested an “upward review of the price determination for voice and data and SMS. Given the state of the economy and the circa 40 per cent increase in the cost of doing business, we wish to request for an interim administrative review of the mobile (voice) termination rate for voice; administrative data floor price, and cost of SMS as reflected in extant instruments.”

This proposal will see the price floor for calls rise from N6.4 to N8.95, while the price cap for SMS will rise from N4 to N5.61.

This development came as business organisations continue to devise means to survive the country’s harsh economic condition.

GTBank reduced operation hours following the incessant increase in the pump price of diesel. Also, First Bank of Nigeria reduced operation hours at some of its branches.

BusinessBreaking News; Elon Musk Offers To Buy Twitter For $54.20 A Share. by Georgry(op): 12:04pm On Apr 14, 2022
Elon Musk offered to buy Twitter for $54.20 a share, saying the social media company needs to be transformed privately.

"I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy," Musk wrote in a letter sent to Twitter Chairman Bret Taylor and disclosed in a securities filing.

According to Musk, the social media company needs to go private because it can "neither thrive nor serve" free speech in its current state, Musk wrote.

"As a result, I am offering to buy 100% of Twitter for $54.20 per share in cash, a 54% premium over the day before I began investing in Twitter and a 38% premium over the day before my investment was publicly announced," he wrote. "My offer is my best and final offer and if it is not accepted, I would need to reconsider my position as a shareholder."

Twitter shares jumped 12% in premarket trading after closing at $45.85 a share on Wednesday.

Musk first revealed a 9.2% stake in the social media giant earlier this month, which sent share soaring 27%. The company also announced that Musk would join its board of directors, but he later reversed those plans.

Musk has previously criticized the social media giant publicly, polling people on Twitter last month about whether the company abides by free speech principles. He also said he was considering building a new social media platform.

Shares of Twitter have seesawed in recent weeks amid the news from Musk, but are up 6% this year and 18.5% since the start of the month. Musk's offer values Twitter at about $43 billion.
