BusinessUs-china Trade War: Shoe Giants Urge Trump To End Tariffs by Georgry(op): 4:06pm On May 22, 2019
Some of the world's biggest footwear firms are urging Donald Trump to end the US trade war with China, warning of a "catastrophic" effect on consumers.
A letter signed by 173 companies, including Nike and Adidas, says the president's decision to raise import tariffs will affect the working class.
They also warn that higher levies threaten the future of some businesses.
Mr Trump says that the trade deficit with China hurts the US economy.
The US president increased levies on $200bn (£157.3bn) worth of Chinese imports into the US from 10% to 25% more than a week ago after Washington and Beijing failed to reach a deal on trade.
China retaliated by announcing plans to raise levies on $60bn of US imports from 1 June.

including Clarks, Dr Martens and Converse, say that while the average US tariff on footwear is 11.3%, in some cases it can reach as high as 67.5%.
"Adding a 25% tax increase on top of these tariffs would mean some working American families could pay a nearly 100% duty on their shoes," the companies wrote.
"This is unfathomable."
"It is time to bring this trade war to an end," the firms urged.
When he raised tariffs earlier this month, Mr Trump told companies that they could reduce costs by shifting production to the US.
Report
However, the shoemakers and retailers say that while they have been moving their sourcing away from China: "Footwear is a very capital-intensive industry, with years of planning required to make sourcing decisions, and companies cannot simply move factories to adjust to these changes."
Retaliation fears
On Tuesday, a top business lobby in China released a survey of its members that found just over 40% had relocated, or were considering moving production facilities, outside of China because of tariffs.
The survey by the American Chambers of Commerce in China and Shanghai found one-third of respondents had delayed or cancelled investment decisions to cope with tariffs.
A recent escalation in the trade conflict - including tighter restrictions on Chinese telecoms giant Huawei - was creating fresh concerns for businesses in China, the group said.

Last week, the Trump administration added Huawei to its "entity list" , which bans the company from acquiring technology from US firms without government approval.
Speaking to the BBC, the chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in China, Tim Stratford, said its members had "real concerns" about the fallout from the US action against Huawei.
"Particularly in the wake of the decision to put Huawei on the... entity list, there are concerns that the government of China may decide to retaliate against American companies," Mr Stratford said.
A survey by AmCham found that slightly more than 40% of its members had relocated, or were considering moving, outside of China because of tariffs.
The group represents more than 900 US companies working in China.
Plane manufacturer Boeing, pharmaceuticals firm Pfizer and soft drink giant Coca-Cola are among the US companies AmCham represents in China.
Last year, Boeing opened its first completion plant for its 737 passenger plane in eastern China, near the city of Shanghai.
Boeing's president of China, John Bruns, said he was "nervous" about the "challenging environment" caused by the tit-for-tat tariff war.

How did we get here?
China and the US have been engaged in a fractious dispute over trade since the early days of Mr Trump's presidency.
While campaigning for the presidential election in 2016, Mr Trump repeatedly accused China of unfair trading practices and intellectual property theft.
He threatened to apply tariffs, saying China's entry into the World Trade Organization had paved the way for the "greatest jobs theft in history".
He also wants to cut America's trade deficit with China, which he says is hurting US manufacturing.
Despite several rounds of talks, the world's two largest economies have failed to reach an agreement to end the trade war.
What's next?
Still, Beijing signalled some willingness to work with Washington to solve their trade dispute.
No discussions have been scheduled since the last round of talks ended on 10 May.
"China remains ready to continue our talks with our American colleagues to reach a conclusion. Our door is still open," China's ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai said on Fox News.
The leaders of the US and China are also set to meet again at the G20 summit in Japan next month.

so you think your death and your killing of the faultless, those that did not harm you in anyway would bring peace to the world? Blow the Kaaba today but you would still find Muslims in their billions. You think i see the Kaaba from my place of prayer? Muslims do not worship the Kaaba, its just a reference direction and a house built by Abraham and Ishmail.
But bombing churches will bring peace to the world, right? why are you people like this?
why must you fight for your God that is the most powerful?

When Buhari started talking rice, you lot claimed it could not happen.

He gave loans, he banned importation, yes there would be smuggling but all these silos and processing plants popping up everywhere can only be testament to the policy actually yielding results.

Coscharis, even Jerry Useni not to talk of governments of Kebbi and other states.

We would soon reach self-sufficiency in Rice production and the kudos must go to the president's policy.

Nothing wrong with you appreciating him even if he's not your preferred candidate.
I've never seen Nigeria made Rice in the market here in Edo state... is Edo state not part of Nigeria? be deceiving yourself

PoliticsOndo Monarch, Olateru Olagbegi, Passes Away At 77 by Georgry(op): 10:12pm On Apr 17, 2019
The Olowo of Owo town in Ondo State , Oba Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi , has passed away at the age of 77 .
A family source confirmed that the first - class monarch died on Tuesday night.

The monarch ruled the community for 16 years , having been installed as the traditional ruler of the ancient town in 2003 by the late Governor Olusegun Agagu .
During his reign , the deceased was appointed a Chancellor of the University of Benin in 2005 and later, chancellor , University of Abuja .
He was, until his demise , chancellor of the University of Jos; and a former chairman of the Ondo State Council of Obas .

A palace source hinted that the monarch had earlier attended a security summit held in the town on Tuesday and developed complications after he had retired to the palace and eventually died.
Although the state government was yet to make any official statement on the death of the traditional ruler, the news of his death has spread across the state and beyond.
The Commissioner for Information,Yemi Olowolabi said he was not aware of the development, stressing only Olowo’s palace could confirm the story.
Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who hails from Owo, is currently on an official engagement outside the country.
However, an official of Owo Local Government Area of the state who spoke in confidence confirmed the death of the monarch.
He stated the chairman of the Local Government will announce his death officially on Thursday.
He said the monarch had been on and off the hospital for over a year, attributing his death to health challenges he suffered since his ascension to the throne.
Oba Folagbade Olateru Olagbegi was the eldest son of his late father, Sir Olateru Olagbegi who ruled the ancient town of Owo between 1910 and 1998.
He received the staff of office as Olowo in December 11, 2003 from the late former Governor Olusegun Agagu after succeeding his father in 1999.
He received his first degree in law from London, UK and attended Nigeria Law school in 1968.
He was married to Ololade Olateru-Olagbegi, a Barrister and law lecturer at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko and they are blessed with children and grandchildren.
Folagbade obtained a bachelor’s degree in Law from London, UK.
He later returned to Nigeria to practice Law under the late Fatai Williams.
He was a lecturer in the Nigerian Law School, where he retired as a reader in 1999 to ascend the throne of his forefathers.
He was appointed as Chancellor of University of Benin (Nigeria) in 2005 and later University of Abuja.
He was honoured with the national award of the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR).
Besides, he was appointed the Chancellor, University of Benin in 2015 and later the University of Abuja.
The late Oba Olagbegi was a former chairman, Ondo State Council of Obas.
Palace sources confirmed his death but stated “we cannot announce it now because of various traditions to follow.
“Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu who is an indigene of Owo is currently out of the country for an official duty and must be formally briefed on Olowo’s exit before official announcement,” sources said.

barojana:
However a word of caution to Winners family and Oyedepo. I'm saying this as a christian. Canaancity that I saw with my eyes is too big to have a strict Christian identity. It would spark unnecessary debates if Muslims are in anyway shape of form excluded from this city. How can a citizen of this country be exempted from a city within Nigeria based on religious affiliations.

When the church finally opens to member of the public it must sell to Muslims, traditionalist and atheists too, because the land was procured from both Christians , Traditionalist and Muslims and the land still belongs to Nigeria.

We enjoy amazing peace and coexistence here in Ogun State, between Christians and Muslims. And our peace over the years has been a product of mutual brotherly respect not grandstanding.

Also, the church for the love of God should avoid running a business monopoly. Schools, hospitals, market should be open to everybody to invest in. These are issues that can cause problem in the future.

Lastly, It would be interesting to see whether Winners would allow RCCG fulfill her aggressive church planting system inside Canaancity. If rccg and winners fail this test, then if anyone complains of too much churches in Lagos then we should all just shut up.

Canaancity and Redemption city should take note...
