TravelRe: Please I Need Advice From People In Abuja. Am Depressed! by Gerrard59(m): 3:07am On Mar 16, 2023
Karikapapaya:
Please 🥺 I need advice. Since I graduated from University of Benin in 2011, I have not had a good job. I also have a Masters degree from same Uni. I reside in Warri in Delta State. I also own a diploma in theology, that means have been to bible school. Have been teaching in different private schools since 2011. Am 34 now will be 35 in few months time. Lots of people are putting pressure on me to get married but I am scared I can't sustain a family with my meagre private school teacher's salary.
Our society promotes poverty and mediocrity. Why are they forcing a young man (yes, in the institution of marriage using marital age globally, as a man, you are young) to marry when he does not have a stable source of income? I can understand pressuring you to marry or bear children if you were in South Korea or Singapore (due to low birth rates), but then, even Koreans and Singaporean males would rather remain single than bring children into a financially unstable environment. They are not offering pieces of invaluable advice to earn a good income but are looking at marriage.

Honestly, when I read that line, I got angry. You needed to see my reaction. angry

Help a brother. Am Esan by tribe but born and brought up in Warri. Am like a burden to my aged parents right now because I still live with them and feed from them. I have savings of up to 150k. Keep the advice coming please. Should I just rent a small house in Warri and be managing things or I should relocate to Abuja ? Or even Lagos? I know I am brilliant because I graduated with a second class upper grade with a 4. Point CGPA in biochemistry. I can speak fluently and can defend my certificate but have not been really lucky with jobs. Have spent t fare attending different interviews in Lagos in the past I had to give up and stop coupled with he fact that the age factor isn't on my side anymore.
Like Tensa20 has said, it is pointless going to Abuja, especially if you are not guaranteed a place to live free of charge. Good, you have 150K, continue saving. This is what you should do:

Those your married and well-to-do mates, try to seek financial assistance from them to finance your postgraduate studies by doing a PhD in a developed country. I would say target the US because it has many scholarships even in tier 3 universities - who would be ecstatic to have you as a student. You need to do your research painstakingly. Ask your mates who have relocated via studies to assist you with payments, recommendations and tips. If any is in academia, seek his/her assistance in recommending you to a professor or faculty member. On your part, save, be disciplined and be focused.

P.S. This is exactly what a close friend did; he is in Canada today. Although a first-class graduate and in his late twenties, his financial situation is exactly like yours. He rallied around for financial assistance (I supported him, too), got the admission through a friend of his erstwhile professor in Canada, got fully funded (aka no tuition fees but with a monthly stipend), and rallied again for flight ticket and visa expenses (again, I supported him). Thankfully, he is in Canada today. Determination and perseverance = success. Even me sef beckoned on people I knew for assistance to pay application fees due to CBN issue or give me advice for the application process. You need to get into that network ASAP. It is there, you just need to ask. There would be rejections here and there but ask. In my case, the dude called me one day that he had an emergency and I should be of assistance. This was after asking almost everyone he knew and no positive response. Today, he is in Canada. If he can do it, anyone can.

No need to go to Abuja, it would be too expensive if you don't have a place to stay. No matter how much you get paid, it comes down to square one due to increased living costs. You have a place to stay and free food - which means you have little overhead costs.

How?, when?, and where?.

You mean the school will book flight for every students on scholarship to fly from home country?, this lamba is too loud
Let me teach you a little bit about critical thinking and communication...

When you see someone write something you strongly doubt or are surprised about, you don't outrightly say it is a lie. Rather, you ask, "how possible is it?" "Do you have evidence to support your statement/claim?" "How come it is done?" "What are the examples of such?" Alternatively, you conduct your research to confirm if what the person said is true. Both of you are on the Internet, so opening another tab should not be hard. You then Google "scholarships that sponsor student's tuition fees, living expenses and flight tickets to and fro". You would get results and learn one or two things.

Now to your disclaimer. You are wrong about it. There are MANY scholarships that cover everything from flights to settling down to living expenses to tuition fees. I hobnob with these people daily and yes, they are Nigerians. I even guided a Nairalander on the nitty-gritty involved when he arrived the country. The organisation SPONSORED everything from start to finish.

I feel like new immigrants (men) need to give themselves a break.

You are new in a country, probably sorting out accommodation, finances, getting a job and then residency.

These already are so many battles to face so you won't probably have time to learn about the dating culture which in itself altogether is different from that of Nigeria.

Unless you're extremely handsome or a natural Chad would you get women.

So give yourself time and settle into the new environment and then find ways to beautiful yourself so you can get the quality companionship you need.

Stop being so hard on yourself.
The average Nigerian man loves sex so much. So, don't be surprised by how they lament. They cannot do without it. It is the reason hookup has increased exponentially. Smart young, succulent and beautiful ladies are fleecing them, and rightfully so.

Can a Nigerian American, who was born and raised in the US, and has a Nigerian first name or last name for instance, a name such as 'Johnson Adeleke' be assigned as a Visa Interview Officer in Nigeria?
What would that result to, don't you think it will lead to more Nigerians getting Visa from him, or don't you think he could be an ass licking patriot of the United States, and decide to deny more Nigerians visa?
Nairalanders, please feel free to debate this.
So, because he denies Nigerians visas, then he is an asslicker? Your type dey promote mediocrity. In fact, statements like the bold would even propel him to deny Nigerians visas since you believe because he has Nigerian ancestry, it should be automatic approval.

With reference to this thread I made when I knewly moved to Canada.

I have some gist for you. Eight months after I moved to Canada I was able to taste pussy, thanks to a beautiful Uganda lady.

Lemme tell you, when I was in Nigeria, I used to hear that oyibo dey rush black men. When I got here I realised it was all fallacies and lies. Oyibo women doesn't give a fvck about black men except you are a celebrity, rich athletic or sports personality or one rich popular dude.

The same pussy I change every week in Nigeria was what took me Eight months to see here.

There's money here once you are working and there are Jobs everywhere in Canada, but working without pussy sometimes is not really cool.

Some of them can be tempting, while I was waiting for bus at a bus stop, two girls were dancing and shaking yansh for me, not that they like or want you, but they just wanna do it. Just ignore them and swallow saliva, you will be alright
This is the result of having constant sexual intercourse while in Nigeria. If you are like me, you won't find it so hard to stay without sex. In Canada, it took you eight months. Where I am, boys don dey two years plus, pant dem no see. grin

My advice has always been simple: attain citizenship, immerse yourself in the culture, make money (business or career), and then explore other locations. A man with money has many options. The Caribbeans and South America are in your backyard. Life should not be hard.

P.S. I am glad many Nigerians, especially the men, are realising that the vast majority of Nigerian men are not handsome. This I knew more than three years ago. Nigerian women, even without makeup, are finer than the men.

Most women are morally upstanding. Even if they dress provocatively, that doesn't make them cheap and easy. It's just the culture, especially in the Summer.

The problem started with you marrying her just so that you have a wife before you relocated. Then, you left her in Nigeria (she mentioned loneliness). Although, having a companion is good, I think many young Nigerian men need to live life without having one so that they know how both sides can be. Are you telling me you would die while being a bachelor in the UK?

There are very few Esan people, and even fewer with economic clout compared to Yorubas. Just as there are few jobs that a Nigerian can get if he speaks Swahili compared to Chinese across Africa. Why do Asians learn English instead of French?

This is a dogmatic way of looking at things. So Nigerians who learn Chinese do it because they love China, not because of the economic opportunities? If I was doing business in Nigeria at my age, I would learn Yoruba as it is. Non-Hausas in the military learn Hausa because of the opportunities and protection they get, yet you say it is not a way to the top? LOL! What kind of business generates so much profits within six months? You people confuse revenues with profits. Because a business generates high revenues doesn't make it profitable. For a business to generate profit, it takes quite a while NOT six months. BTW, what is the potential interest rate you expect his investment to generate within six months?

Regarding the bold, it depends on the route he decides to take. Unless via tourist visa, which is hard to get these days, if he spends two to three million on GRE and TOEFL preparations, application fees, WES evaluation etc., he can get a fully funded admission or significant scholarship if it's an MBA (quality work experience matters here). Student visa is one of the best bet in migrating to the US. It depends on his undergraduate degree and grades. However, he should understand that US citizenship isn't too guaranteed even with a high paying job unless he goes the marriage route as quickly as possible.

Honestly, Pansophist. I'd like to hear your thoughts on why the black race is so backward.

In my younger days, I used to think it was colonialism but dropped that thought when some Asian countries that gained independence at the same time like us were far better and advanced a la Singapore.

Next, I thought it was our leaders and the elites but leaders are elected from the people. Besides, some commoners or plebs who get to position of power still misbehave.

Right now, the theory I'm working with is that something happened to the black race during evolution. As in, a phenomenon that made us retrogress while other races were successfully adapting to their environments because it's not normal.

Honestly, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Cc:
As Rege.x mentioned, a few black-dominated countries (mostly island nations though) are doing pretty OK. Regarding the bold, I use to use Singapore as an example but upon reading further, she got assisted by the west. The same applies to Japan, South Korea and Malaysia. Kudos to them too for having pragmatic, enterprising, meritocratic cultures to add. Without them, they would not have come this far. Also, they were/are largely homogenous. In Singapore's case, the Chinese control the society, and Chinese or East Asian Confucian cultures have those traits I listed.

The way I see it, oyibos would not desire that sub-Saharan Africa develops because of what she did during the slave trade era. If SSA is as rich as China and Japan today, we would have given them more trouble than China is doing today because of what they did to us. They have seen what a rich China is doing, then imagine people you enslaved for more than 400 years + colonialism? These folks (west) like who they can control such as Japan and South Korea. Once you don't allow them to control you. they fight to put you down. For instance, many EU countries are looking to reduce or cut trade with China, but I wonder who would replace China (economic and market opportunities)? It should be Africa as we are way younger and have the land plus we share the same languages. But where are they going? South East Asia. Same region China has a massive influence as it is her backyard. OK, why not assist African countries the same way you assisted China, Japan, South Korea and the rest? Not all would become as rich as those Asian nations, but on average, they will become richer than they are today. For where! Another instance is France which controls literally all Francophone countries in Africa, none of which is doing well economically. The top five economies in sub-Saharan Africa, no francophone country dey inside. The EU's future is in Africa. If she wants to be safe from illegal migrants, she should work with the continent to make her prosperous or be prepared for invasion (high birth rates, climate change and conflicts). They too have low birth rates.

At the same time, many SSA countries don't promote those traits I listed and lack delayed gratification. Also, we are too heterogeneous.

I have been asking myself same question. I have tried to look into what's actually the problem. But then you look at Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and other black race not in Africa, when compared are doing far much better than us. I can't rule out evolution, but if it is evolution, why are those Caribbean countries doing well than their African counterpart?
Trinidad and Tobago is rich due to oil revenues and a smaller population. But she has social issues due to the black/Indian divide. Barbados is better off as she is predominately black. Colonialism does have her issues and joining different ethnic groups makes no sense. From my observations so far, prosperous societies today achieved it as they were homogenous to an extent (same ethnic/racial group). A harmonious society will progress faster than a disharmonious one. OTOH, one would have expected the likes of Gabon or E. Guinea to be like dem UAE or even Trinidad and Tobago, but the archaic mentality and poor creative skills have ret@rded their development. Other examples are Namibia and Botswana. They are not pragmatic and forward-thinking like the rulers in UAE and Qatar. Developing a country nowadays is not difficult. The way I see it, not many ethnic groups' cultures in sub-Saharan Africa promote meritocracy, enterprise, pragmatism, innovation, integrity etc. This I believe is where the issue comes in. But colonialism do us bad thing, then, lacking those values/attributes I listed also contributed as they would have lifted a country above it.

As a side note, I don't even get why Nairaland men are triggered whenever this broke guy stuff is mentioned.

One fact I've come to realise and accepted is that a lot of women will sleep/fork rich men in a bid to secure their commitment and based on the Pareto's law.

Finish! That's where it ends! Nothing else!

They can rant about their disdain for broke guys from morning till night but some of them will still settle.

I've been using a sample of females I grew up with as an example. And from observation, the guys they finally married is far lower in status than the guys they've forked

The numbers don't lie!

Lol!
The thing here is: they are winning from both sides. Fork around, get paid beautifully and marry a man who will take care of you and your children. Mission accomplished. The only way a man wins is when he forked around, has money then gets married to a chaste woman. Unfortunately, the vast majority of southern Nigerian men are not in that category. Yet, they won't insist on standards like their northern counterparts (excluding teenage marriages) or counterparts in Arab countries.

If southern Nigerian women were listed on the stock market, I would buy and HOLD.

Needless to say, the male models are not left out, most of them have become homosexuals.

Literally, these ladies clubbed every Friday, went to nearby cities and states every weekend for sexual rendevous, and juggled pen!s here and there. Even the ones I thought were pious also fvcked rampantly, as I was told. Or the ones who gist me of their sexcapades as I was free and open-minded. Or the then escorts who serviced men in Lagos/Abuja, but relocated to another state to get married based on tabula-rasa. I hold nothing against them for fvcking. They played their cards too well. Today? Dem don marry. Na why alfa meil rants make me laugh. The reason they are ranting is because of poverty. Give them money today, and they will patronise escorts, and get side chics (Nigeria's married men defend side chics even more than the side chics defend themselves). LoL.. abeg, the table don scatter before o. I no fit laugh abeg

The men are not chaste, so expecting a woman to be 100% chaste is not being ridiculous. Though that's not my position or the reason for this post.
I use to have that same mentality, but changed it as what both parties bring to the table are different. A woman, as your posts point out, should look at a man's future before getting into a relationship with him. That is correct. A man, on the other hand, would look at a woman's past before getting married to her. It is the reason single men prefer single women, not single mothers. It makes no logical sense for a young man who is doing well financially to marry a single mother. Also, when I was an adolescent, it was common for young women about to be wedded to become pregnant as a way to indicate their womb was functioning due to the presumable number of abortions she must have done while growing up. If however, you don't expect women to be chaste, please don't complain when these men cheat on their unchaste wives. Although I concede that there are women who married as virgins yet are cheated on by their husbands, which is unfair in my opinion.

Nevertheless, women at least southern Nigerian women are winning the game. Kudos to una.

You guys have deviated from the original context of this post.

As if the men are saints themselves.
Actually, it does. I perfectly agree with you that a man must be a provider. In fact, it is better to be dead than be alive as a man who has no money. Of what use is a man without money? I have seen the disrespect men get when they have no money from their wives, wives' family members, society and even their friends. So, the rants on the first page are ignorant of how the world works. However, as much as you want a man who works and provide, you need to bring something to the table which are your feminine values and character. I find it odd for a lady to expect the top 1% man yet she is not also a top 1% lady. It is a merger of unequals. Most men, especially traditional men since you referenced men of those days, are not interested in a woman's money. At the same time, these men need you to be chaste and have high feminine values.

But then, I can't blame young ladies who desire the top 1% yet are in the bottom 20% since the average Nigerian man lacks standards. If I was a Nigerian lady, I would do the same. Flirt around and do unimaginable things then turn around and get a rich man. Honestly, I hail una. The strategy has been working for donkey years, notwithstanding the alfa meil chants (most of whom are very poor).

I can't believe that Nigerians are discouraging a young man from getting married. shocked

I have been here since 2011. I enjoyed the political debates leading up to the 2011 elections and decided to register. Also, it had and still has relevant information from a Nigerian perspective.

Notable feats between Nairaland and myself:

- Got by first job from here (hired by a Nairalander),
- Got tips on how to attain a first class, which I didn't attain sef.
- Got invaluable tips on self development. Frequent commentary on Nairaland aided my writing skills immensely. I recalled commenting almost every single day.
- Got to know my UTME aka JAMB result on Nairaland.
- Got the relevant information I used to japa
- Got paired with good folks who have remained buddies till date.
- and many more too numerous to mention.

Regarding tribal posts, that is APC's fault. Leading up to the 2015 elections, APC went the tribal way. She sponsored propagandists to smear Igbos and other ethnic minorities, most of whom supported Jonathan. In return, they had to retaliate which led to Nairaland being very tribal. Even those in the diaspora were at the forefront. One named Dayokanu now Ramduetter whatever or Eko Ile. Seun could not do anything because the bigwigs in the APC were/are Yorubas, and as a Yoruba lad, that would be an affront on his leaders. So he overlooked. What he did was appointing mods from the two ethnic groups, who then push posts smearing the other ethnic group to the front page.

Additionally, he was threatened by islamists to reduce what they called "anti-Islam" posts on Nairaland. What they didn't say was that "anti-Islam" posts became rife because of the atrocities by Boko Haram. It's why the Islam section has a pre-warning before you comment. Unfortunately, he didn't replicate the same for Christians since he's an atheist. Funny enough, his father is a pastor (owner of Ambassadors College in Ogun aka Cowbellpedia Mathematics regulars).

Recently, he has been bromancing with El-Rufai. Just like his buddy Mark Essien (Seun once invited Mark for AMA session years back). An example is how the posts smearing David Hundeyin graced the front page but David's rebuttal wasn't. El-Rufai and David are sworn enemies. So we might begin to see less posts about the slaughtering of Christians in Northern Nigeria. Who knows? 🤷🏿‍♂️

In summary, Nairaland will still remain Nigeria's most visited forum or social media website owned by a Nigerian by any measure because there is no competitor that comes close. The website contains invaluable information from a Nigerian perspective. That is her selling and strongest point.

TheFreshVanilla:
This forum shows the difference between a white man and a black man expecially Africans. Nairaland should be at least a billion $$ business by now but Africans will never stretch themselves beyond normal by going for excellence. Once it's making "good" money, that ends thinking outside the box for the business.
Seun is like the founder of Craigslist. Craigslist was founded before Shopify or few years after Amazon, yet the owner and present CEO (who was an early member) have remained very private. The website is still very bland but easy to navigate. That has been Nairaland's strength, at least during the 2000s - 2015 when less sophisticated phones were prevalent. Maybe in the next few years when those Symbian phones stop reigning or aren't prevalent, more features will be introduced. But then, it's the founder's nature.

There are two alternatives:

- get a signed and letter-headed letter from your registrar or head of the department stating that your bachelor program was taught throughout in English. Submit this alongside other documents. Before this, ask the admission section if it is possible to use it in place of IELTS/TOEFL and let them know your bachelor's was taught in English

Gerrard.59 please do you have any idea on how to go about getting schooling letters to prove that our 12 years of school in Nigeria was in English? Peep the screenshot attached.
