Ok, so here's the deal. Why is it that all my friends are getting married and having kids, and I can't even seem to find one Nigerian man to hook up with? Before you even say it, I'm not ugly. I don't mean to sound conceited or egotistical, I'm just saying that so we can get it out of the way. I'm looking for honest answers, and I'd rather not waste time on inconsequential rubbish like "maybe you're ugly". (don't roll your eyes, you know there's that 'one' person who'll post that answer)

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Mr. Michael Aondoakaa (SAN) on Tuesday said President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua could perform his official duties from his sick bed at the King Faisal Intensive Care and Research Centre, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Addressing a press conference to highlight the achievements recorded by his ministry in the past one year, the minister advised those calling on the President to resign to take a second look at the 1999 Constitution.

There have been calls for Yar’Adua’s resignation from various interest groups. Also, his refusal to hand over to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan, in accordance with the 1999 Constitution, has attracted widespread condemnation.

But the justice minister declared that the powers of the President were not exercised territorially. He said that those calling for the President’s resignation were ignorant.

He said, “There is no evidence that he is not exercising his powers as President. He has his vice-president and his ministers whom he delegates power and functions to.

“The powers of the President are not exercised territorially. Yar’Adua can exercise his powers anywhere in the world, on the plane, at the meeting of the United Nations or even on his sick bed, as long as he is not incapacitated by the sickness.

“The President can exercise his powers through the vice-president and ministers while on his sick bed and that is what he has been doing. For example, the Chief Justice of Nigeria wrote a letter to the President and copied me that he would be retiring on December 31, that the President of the Court of Appeal has just retired and that their replacements have not been screened by the Senate.

“I sent the letter to the Principal Secretary to the President who transmitted same to the President who approved it and sent it back to me.”

Aondoakaa cautioned opposition leaders against making utterances capable of destabilising the nation, noting that “the powers of the President are embodied in his body. We don’t want to take issue with the opposition. We shall meet in 2011 and they will not succeed.”

Aondoakaa also said that the probe into the $180m Halliburton scandal was stalled because witnesses gave evidence in French and it had been difficult translating the information to English in Nigeria.

He added that N6bn was paid by the government through his ministry for debts incurred on judgements against federal agencies in 2009. He decried the failure of federal ministries, departments and agencies to heed legal opinion from his ministry. He lamented that this non-challance had cost his ministry huge sums of money in litigation.

He sadi, “The revocation of the Ajaokuta steel complex contract has so far cost government a whopping $2m in legal fees. Government still pays about N12bn to workers in a company that is not working. The ministry is developing a strong internal capacity to offer advisory legal opinions to agencies of government. The core objective of this initiative is to develop a culture of predictability and uniformity in government positions on similar issues across all MDAs.

“We also seek to progressively rely less on external consultancy services and ultimately reduce the government’s liabilities in the handling of legal matters which may sometimes be aggravated by poor legal advice.”

He said the President had asked the Borno State commissioner for justice to investigate the killing of a female corps member, Miss Grace Adie.

Speaking on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency {NDLEA}; an agency under the ministry, the minister noted that “NDLEA has again received ninth consecutive certification for excellence for taking Nigeria out of the list of countries determined as a major Drug-Transit and major Drug producing countries. Within the first eight months of 2009, the agency has successfully apprehended 4,970 suspected drug traffickers. A total of 48,770,773 kg of various narcotics and psychotropic substances were also seized from illicit drug traffickers”.

Aondoakaa said that under the ministry’s prisons decongestion programme that about 42,000 cases had been given to about 2,500 private legal practitioners across the 36 states of the Federation. “Over 5,000 accused persons have been granted bail while over 3,000 accused persons have been convicted after diligent prosecution. So far about 25,000 cases are still pending in courts with representation from the office of Attorney-General of the Federation,”

He said that in 2009, N1, 815,666,668 was released by government for the programme and that his ministry had achieved 100% utilization of the released amount. “We hope to prosecute the programmed with even greater vigour next year in view of the obvious benefits to our criminal justice system” he added.

Aondoakaa announced that the Nigerian Law School will establish additional campuses in Bayelsa and Adamawa states respectively in addition to the current ones in Lagos , Abuja , Enugu and Kano.

This, he said, would help to maintain a 6-campus structure that would cover all the country’s geo-political zones.

He however said that law school examination would continue to be administered centrally.

“We have extracted concessions from the Adamawa and Bayelsa State governments to complement federal government’s efforts by providing the physical facilities for the two new campuses.”

Indications emerged on Monday that the management of Oceanic International Bank Plc was set to lay-off about 1,400 workers in a cost cutting exercise desfined to return the bank to the path of profitability.

It was learnt that the figure represents 40 per cent of the bank’s 3,500 employees.

Findings by our correspondent further showed that the management of the bank, which declared a loss of N286bn on Friday had also approved 30 per cent salary reduction.

Already, 250 of the affected workers had received their sack letters in an exercise aimed at pruning down the bank’s workforce and cutting down operational costs.

A reliable source in the company told our correspondent on Monday that the list of the remaining 1,150 workers slated for early disengagement from the bank was ready. The source said their sack letters would soon be released.

It was gathered that the first casualties in the phased exercise were shown the way out of the bank for sundry offences, especially that their personal accounts were in the red.

Consequently fear has gripped the employees of the bank in the wake of the latest development.

Oceanic Bank is one of the troubled banks rescued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, which examined the books of the 24 banks in the country. The erstwhile management of the bank, headed by Mrs. Cecelia Ibru, was sacked on August 14 along with four other bank chiefs for granting huge non-performing loans, which affected the wellbeing of the financial institutions.

The Managing Director of the bank, Mr. John Aboh, had at a news conference in Lagos recently, said the pruning exercise was inevitable in view of the state of the bank. Aboh, was, however, silent on the details and magnitude of the exercise.

Aboh also said that some unviable branches of the bank had been shut down as part of measures to salvage the ailing financial institutions.

However, investigation by our correspondent showed that the management had compiled and approved a list of 1,400 workers to be eased out of the bank. A top official of the bank told our correspondent on Monday that the Aboh-led management had authorised the list for implementation.

The source further stated that the sack of about 250 officials of the bank last week was a prelude to the full implementation of the decision of the management.

The source stated, “I can tell you authoritatively that 250 workers have already been sacked for all manners of offences, including that their personal accounts were in debt. The management just started with that figure because the target is 40 per cent of the bank’s workforce of 3,500. To be specific, no fewer than 1,400 employees of the bank, which represents 40 per cent of the workforce, would be sacked at the end of the exercise.

“The management has also agreed to 30 per cent salary reduction.

“The management is very serious and committed to the exercise. Already, the workers in the administration department of the bank have been scattered and transferred to different parts of the country, especially the northern axis.

“Confusion and apprehension reign in Oceanic Bank because of the decision of the management. We just pray that the managing director will rescind the decision because of the acrimony that is likely to result from the implementation,” added the source who craved anonymity.

When contacted on the telephone, Aboh, who reiterated that sacking of workers was inevitable, however, said that it was premature to speculate on its details.

He added that it was not true that 40 per cent of the workforce would be affected.

Aboh, who confirmed that some workers were sacked last week, said the figure was less than 250. But he declined to specify the exact figure.

He said, “We are not done with the process yet because we are observing all procedures. We are looking at all files to enable us draw reasonable conclusion on the way forward. I told journalists at a press conference recently about the exercise (sacking of workers), but we are not ready for it yet. Wait until we do it,” Aboh added.

It was in a bus I boarded at Ikeja last saturday. That was where they met. A man who "ran away" from home one year, six months ago, and the wife. Come and see fight. The man even tried to escape but the woman got to him before the okada he tried to escape on could start.

The woman started reigning curses on the man who insisted that the woman was a witch and he had to run away from her. The woman insisted that they were going home together as she started crying. The bus was sango bound but I alighted at Agbado. There was an argument in the bus as people started taking sides. All ladies in the bus expectedly supported the woman while some men wondered why a woman would be so difficult that a man would run away from her and 4 kids.

It was indeed a sad drama
