Deep Sight: “THE New Atheists” is the name given to a group of writers, including Richard Dawkins, Daniel C. Dennett, Sam Harris and the late Christopher Hitchens, who take a more aggressive approach to opposing religious belief than atheists and agnostics have traditionally done. This New Atheism is, in its origins and aims, a type of moralism: a protest against the injustices of the world. The world, marked as it is by so much injustice, innocent suffering, and cynicism of power cannot, it is claimed, be the work of a good and just God. Such a God must be contested.

In his absence, man is called upon to establish justice.

The atheist’s claim, however, that humanity can do, and must do, what God cannot is both presumptuous and intrinsically false. Indeed, this idea has led to widespread cruelty and the violation of justice. We have seen the contemporary results: nihilistic yet impeccably democratic legislation that repudiates life itself! I am thinking here of existing, enacted, and pending articles of legislation that legalise the use of various drugs, the practices of prostitution, contraception, homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion, euthanasia, cloning, in-vitro fertilization, and the hollowing-out of human dignity through genetic manipulation, human trafficking, and other new forms of slavery.

On a global scale one can also add to this list: the inequality in the distribution of goods, the depletion of the earth’s resources, and the increase in poverty, famine, and illness. Also, one cannot forget the brutal campaigns that were waged against religion in the 20th Century by Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia. A world, which seeks to create its own justice purely through human reason, the very existence and origin of which the atheists cannot explain, is a world without hope. No one and nothing can guarantee that the cynicism of power, whatever beguiling ideological mask it adopts, will cease to dominate the world.

Contrary to the New Atheists, faith is necessary as a purifying force for reason, to liberate it from its blind spots and help it to be more fully itself. Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth. When human interests and values are based on reason alone, apart from the truth that transcends them, the individual and his human rights, dignity, worth, and capacity for self-realization are at the mercy of caprice. When man rejects absolutes, he ends up judging by pragmatic criteria, which are based essentially upon experimental data, in the mistaken belief that technology must dominate all things. All of life’s mysteries are then reduced to problems that must be solved in commensurate with the human mind that has posed them.

However, beyond man’s intellectual ability to solve problems there are mysteries, which engage, not only the mind, but also the heart, body, and whole being. These mysteries do not challenge us to master their complexity; rather, with a sense of reverence and awe, they invite us to marvel in contemplation at their core simplicity. God has given us an image of himself. This image we see in Christ, who was made man, was crucified, and who stands in complete opposition to the many false images of God created and posed by the atheist. God has revealed his true face in the figure of the one who suffers, who shares man’s God-forsaken condition by taking it upon himself. This innocent God who suffers, has attained the certitude of hope: there is a God, and God can create justice in a way that we cannot conceive, yet we can grasp it through faith. No doubt, the question of justice constitutes the essential argument, or in any case the strongest argument, in favour of faith in eternal life.

In our everyday lives, we experience many greater or lesser hopes. But when these hopes are fulfilled, it becomes clear that they were not, in reality, the whole. We discover that man has need of a hope that goes further. We realise that only something infinite will suffice for us, something that will always be more than we can ever attain. This great hope can only be God, who encompasses the whole of reality and who can bestow upon us what we, by ourselves, cannot attain.

To protest against God in the name of justice is self-defeating. The New Atheists forget that man always remains man. They forget man’s freedom; they forget that freedom always remains also freedom for evil. They believe that once the economy, for example, has been put right, everything else will automatically be put right. Their real error is materialism: man, in fact, is not merely the product of economic conditions, and it is not possible to redeem him purely from the outside by creating a favourable economic environment. Indeed, the kingdom of good will never be definitively established in this world. Anyone who promises a better world, guaranteed to last forever, is making a false promise; he is overlooking human freedom.

The New Atheists are wrong to believe that man can be redeemed through science. This kind of hope is deceptive. Science can contribute greatly to making the world a better place; yet, it can also destroy mankind and the world unless it is steered by forces that lie outside it. If technical progress is not matched by corresponding progress in man’s ethical formation, in man’s inner growth, then it is not progress at all, but a threat to man and the world.

The tragic consequences of atheism demonstrate that the growth of our technical possibilities has not been matched by an equal development of our moral energy. Moral strength has not grown in tandem with the development of science; on the contrary it has diminished, because the technological mentality of our time has largely confined morality to the subjective sphere. The security we all need as a presupposition of our freedom and dignity can only come from the moral strength of man – not structures – and where this is lacking or insufficient, the power man has will be transformed more and more into a power of destruction. Man, ultimately, is not redeemed by science but by love. In this sense, it is true that anyone who does not know God, even though he may entertain all kinds of hopes, is ultimately without hope. The new moralism of the atheist uses terms like progress, freedom, liberty, equality, justice and peace. But these concepts are decidedly vague and largely confined to party politics where they are open to all kinds of abuse. In contrast, being in communion with God draws us into his “being for all” and makes his way of being our own way of being. God commits us to live for others, but only through communion with him does it become possible truly to be there for others, for the whole.

The first essential setting for learning this hope in God is prayer. When we pray properly we undergo a process of inner purification, which opens us up to God and thus to our fellow human beings. The second place for learning hope is in suffering. Suffering is a part of our human existence. What heals man is not sidestepping or fleeing from suffering, as the atheists do, but rather our capacity for accepting it, maturing through it and finding meaning through union with Christ, who suffered with infinite love for us. A society that is unable to accept its suffering members and incapable of helping to share their suffering and to bear it inwardly through compassion is a cruel and inhuman society. Our lives are involved with one another. Through innumerable interactions they are linked together. No one lives alone. No one sins alone. No one is saved alone.

Atheism is incapable of saving man for it is essentially a materialist ideology that reduces man to a mere machine. When man is nothing more than a product he becomes subject to the control of man. Imperfect individuals must then be weeded out; the path of planning and production must aim at the perfect man. Suffering must disappear, and life is to consist of pleasure alone. In the final analysis atheism encourages consumerism, selfishness, power, and pleasure-seeking – denigrating the importance of faith and scoffing at the “absurdity of thinking about God.” Perhaps the great tragedy of this world is that atheists have no one to really love. Since there is no one to love they never think of the love of God. Their life is tragic indeed.

. . . . . I disagree with many aspects of this Christian's write up. But some aspects are very telling in a way that I have never seen any atheist being alive to. Things about human consciousness which hint at the obvious existence of that ultimate consciousness which is called GOD.

Also, things on essential humanity. . . . . any human being [like thehomer] who sees humans as only highly evolved apes is missing something about what it means to be human.

I repeat that knowing sentient consciousness is the biggest, most obvious, and most simple proof of the existence of GOD, except to the willfully blind.

lawyer: Some of you are just extremely ignorant about facts and if you dont know "ask" so people will educate you. Each section has its own moderator that should provide at least 1 or 2 topics a day to populate the Home page and she does that diligently whenever a moderator gives her a topic to post. She does not only post these topics but she scrutinizes them and edit them for your consumption.

Now when there are a dearth of topics from the moderators per Forum, she goes to each forum to see which topic is trending both on NL and or on the internet to keep NL informed. ikakahu: people should stop telling lies in order to get customers/clients.It was all about about this 48 hrs(2 days) period of car delivery that made me venture into such a deal.After 1 wk and 2 days,I ve not yet got my delivery although the biz was not done with the poster but with another dealer who also promised that I will get the car under 48 hrs.My anger here is even if its going to take a month,tell your customer the truth.The most annoying part is that all the gist the guy told me about buying a car in cotonou were all false ranging from prizes to duration of delivery.When you get there,it ll be another story again.From stories to stories.You may even find out that you ve spent more what you would have bought the car in lagos although my main concern was to choose from varieties and not cost cos of my high taste(not by my making) BUT I MUST SAY THE TRUTH THAT I EVEN BOUGHT THE CAR MORE EXPENSIVE THAN I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT IN LAGOS.I ve vowed never to venture into such a deal again as next time I ve it in my to get another car,I will simply walk into car shop here in naija .Its only good for those that want to smuggle their cars to nigeria but if you want to pay full duty,my brother,my sister,buy it here in naija or even look for a reliable friend or relation that will buy it for you in U.S.

One more important advice,never change a huge sum of amount when going.You can change like 20K so that when you ve have seen by yourself and confirmed that all they told you were lies,you can kindly come back to naija and chang your money to naira and you won t loose so much money.I was cajoled into changing over a million naira and when I saw the truth,I notice that changing the money back would result to more losses and what if being robbed on the way?So that was a serious challenge to me too as I had no option than to buy there.

Student : What about darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as darkness?

Prof : Yes. What is night if there isn't darkness?

Student : You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is the absence of something. Prof : So what is the point you are making, young man?

Student : Sir, my point is your philosophical premise is flawed.

Prof : Flawed? Can you explain how?

Student : Sir, you are working on the premise of duality. You argue there is life and then there is death, a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite,
something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and
magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life: just the absence of it. Now tell me, Professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?

Prof : If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, yes, of course, I do.

Student : Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?

(The Professor shakes his head with a smile, beginning to realize where the argument is going.)

Student : Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavour, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you not a scientist but a preacher?

Student : Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the Professor's brain?

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's brain, felt it, touched or smelt it?.....No one appears to have done so. At this point, we can't rule out malignancy," the doctor said.

I just looked at my husband. I knew he was asking the doctor questions, but I didn't hear any words. I saw his lips moving and felt his strong hand on top of mine. But all I could think was I needed to wake up. ("This is not happening. I know I am just having a bad dream."

It wasn't until I was in the front seat of our car that I realized it wasn't a dream. "Are we going home?" I asked. "No," my husband said. "We are going to get your ultrasound and more x -rays." "Oh," I replied.

It didn't really matter where we were going, because all I could think of at that moment were the three beautiful children my husband and I have been blessed with.

First, my thoughts went to Mikaela who was ten-years-old at the time. Without me, who would she talk to about boys? Who would show her how to put on makeup and help her pick out a college? But the most painful thought was... who would comfort her in her loss?

For the past three years, Mikaela has accompanied me on the Race for the Cure breast cancer walk.

She is well aware of the horrors of treatment.

She's often commented about people walking in honor of a loved one. For her, I knew there would be no sugarcoating the truth.

Then my thoughts shifted to Connor, my eight-year-old son (at the time) – an amazing baseball player who plays it cool with his dad and friends.

He is an undeniably sweet boy who always writes a special card for me on Mother's Day. What would he do next May? Would he pretend to write a card, not telling his teacher that he has no one to give it to?

Suddenly, I felt like throwing up. I asked my husband to pull over.

Once back in the car, all I could think about was Delanie, who was our four-year-old princess at the time. She is so used to having both my husband and me tuck her in at night. She wakes up each morning with a smile on her face and kisses to spare. Have I made enough of an impact on her life that in 10, 12, 15 years from now she will remember me?

Over the following three weeks, I was poked, prodded, and sliced.

On the 22nd day, I found out that I did not have breast cancer.

You would think that I would be so happy that I could not wait to get back to my normal routine. But no. Something happened. Going through that breast cancer scare changed my life in many ways. it was the discovery of purpose.

For Christians, purpose is being and doing what God intends us to be and do: doing today what God asks us to do in our family, church, and community; being more like Christ; and then doing the distinct, bold work God designed us to do before we die!. Jenwitemi: First of all, we would need to understand here that the the biological computer(spirit/soul/body), which is us, operates not in 1 on 1 correlation with the normal PC. So a 1 on 1 comparison will only lead to confusion. While there are a lot of similarities between the biological computer and a normal PC, there are differences too in their functionalities and modes of operation.

Now, a normal PC would only be a heap of hardware without the OS to operate it, so the OS has to be installed by a technician/programmer or a user, as the case may be, to be fully functional. That is the case of a PC. But in case of a biological computer like us, we start getting our OS from the external stimuli coming from the outside world that is already there. That process is self-automated making the body computer much more advanced than the normal PC.

A fetus, even at the unicellular stage, is already receiving external stimuli from the surrounding world of the mother's womb which, as a result, starts forming it's soul. The more informations the fetus receives from the mother's womb as it continues to grow, the more it's soul forms and develops, meaning that the external stimuli is the programmer here.

This goes on until the fetus turns into a fully grown human baby in the womb before it is finally born into the world where it's developing soul begins to receive a whole different set of stimuli or, in PC speak, a new set of programming from the world the baby is born in. And that programming goes on all the way to the grave.

It is okay to be confused because you are only trying to understand the issue at hand. I was once as confused as you are now. But once i was able to put my own schema together on it, the confusion disappeared. Remember that this is MY OWN SCHEMA. You will have to form yours from your own understanding of how these things work.

Back to the issue, then. The spirit enters the body in the very instance it is conceived as a unicellular fetus or organism. The memory of what the spirit experienced at that stage is forever stored in the soul, even if one cannot make a recall of those experiences in the later stages of life, the informations are still there.

The spirit does not determine the soul, it only uses it. The external stimuli from the outside world determine the formation of the soul and mind and that is why religions employ the indoctrinations of the very young because their souls/minds are still very malleable at that early stage.

The tracker today is equally no threat for this set of sophisticated robbers because most trackers are wired to the BB (brain box) of the vehicle.

Once the car is snatched, they drive a reasonable distance and pull over, the specialist id's the brain box, hand held battery powered drills and screw drivers are their favorite tools, in less than 2 mins, the tracker is useless and the car is gone.

Insurance on the other hand is the most legal fraud in Nigeria, if you are in doubt, visit any high court in ur jurisdiction and ask for their case files, the second highest on the list is insurance claims after land dispute. The big questions any insurance agent need to answer is this;

1 why do we need to go to court to settle our insurance claims even when our premiums are paid regularly?
2 why do we need insurance brokers to mediate between the client and the insurance company if the insurance guys re not unscrupulous? Or do we need brokers to withdraw money from the bank?
3 when you are signing an insurance agreement in Nigeria, do you see the caveat where they say "Natural disasters" are not covered by comprehensive insurance premiums? Did you see the interpretation of Natural disasters? Well, i don't think so till you have an insurance case, if your insured car is parked close to a building that eventually catches fire and it affects your vehicle, most insurance companies classify it as natural disaster, no claim.

4, no insurance company in Nigeria insures ''mob-action'' and in their agreement, there was no interpretation for that in other words, they can call it anything, eg 4 kids playing football on the street is a mob to the insurance guys cos if they burst your wind shield, you are on ur own with ur comprehensive insurance.

5 If boko haram attacks close to ur residence and the shock wave of the explosion affects your car and it is established that the attackers are more than one, insurance calls it "mob action", therefore no claim.

6 thieves without guns are "Mobs" in the Nigerian insurance books so no claim.

When you use a good broker, the insurance will pay not because of you but to maintain the good will and customer base of the broker, even at that, the criteria is still terrible, for a venture that charges between 8 to 10% of your car's worth annually.

From my experience so far, insurance against theft, devaluation of assets to pay lower claims has never been as reassuring as the most sought reprieve.

I will advise every car owner, even with ur tracker, use steel pedal locks and anti theft alarms, there is a hand held battery powered metal cutter that can cut the locks no doubt but it takes time and very noisy, will easily attract attention and difficult to procure in Nigeria.

The other option is engrave, yea people believe that they can pull out the reg. Number of their vehicle, show case it again and sell after using it for a while, well, the bad news is that the new reg process will give you a kick so engraving is an option now.

Engrave not just the replaceable parts but equally on the chassis boldly, that will deter thieves alot who want to pass it on as "direct Belgium" to the dealers.

That Jesus expects us to always create situations whereby we can fall back to those who once helped in time of adversaries, getting smart and creative when we are faced with dilemma like the dishonest steward was faced with sack by his boss but went ahead to smartly gain his boss's commendation.

He said that passage taught us how to turn adversities to advantages by borrowing a leaf from the wisdom of the world the dishonest steward exhibited.
He said the passage also taught us that we should make the most out of every situation we find ourselves, in whatever position we are today, we should make sure we make something good and meaningful out of it so that when we are no longer in that position, those things we did would come and speak for us. (he emphasized on building houses, investing, giving, making friends with people, being very generous.). but insisted he's not telling anyone to go and commit fraud even though most of the examples he used as "knowing people in high places (govt) and all that and also the stories he gave harbored around these points.

Lastly, another pastor asked him if it was wise to make friends with the heathen, receive from the heathen and also give to them, his answer was that when we are sowing or reaping, we shouldn't sow on thorny ground and we should always ask for God's direction. he supported his preachings with Isaiah 5 vs 4-7, proverbs vs 24, psalms 90 vs 12 and gen 50 vs 17-20.

Three highlights he pointed out are :

1: Turning adversities to advantage
2: Making the most out of the moment
3: Being generous- willingness to release.


To me, i became confused because the passage was about someone being dishonest before his boss got him sacked and even after that he still used dishonest means to gain back his boss's love, now what is there to learn? what wisdom is there to learn in a truthful way if not what i already explained in my previous posts or is there something the pastor missed or did he use the wrong parable to explain or back up his sermon?

ronkebp: Poster, to start with, don't think Christ is in support of that evil, that man did, if you read the 'New Living Translation" it breaks it down and much more easier to understand, and the whole text does not end in verse 10, read it further down to 20, you will have a clearer understanding.

The guy in question used a fraudster brain, because he knew he will be dismissed by his master, so to gain other peoples favour, he had to reduce the debts they owed to his master, so that when he is eventually thrown out, he will have somewhere to stay....nice sense there i must say....

But Biblically, that attitude there is not a candidate for heaven, he was not faithful with the business his master entrusted to him and decided to use it for his own personal purpose and to his advantage....(that was where Christ said, he that is not faithful with little things will not be faithful with more).

Also, verse 9, is just saying even if you are going to do good to others, do it in a godly way, use your riches to help others, so that your rewards willbe in heaven....not for you to steal from A and think you are doing good by helping the poor or those in need.


Defintely the world will honour and acceopt him, but it is an abomination before God.
