wine4dguy: Mechanical engineering Dear Brother: Believe me, we all need a friend like you. A friend that can go to the extent of opening a thread ( https://www.nairaland.com/2381646/need-ur-advice-aviation-related#34796602) for that pre-historic friend of his who does not have Internet access. Trust me, you are a great friend. Brother, why not give people enough information to help you? As you can see, no one is willing to say anything. Folks have been here in the past with the same 'my friend' rhetoric only to open up later when things seemed to be getting out of hand. It will interest you to know that the beautiful people here are always willing to help, if you give them good reasons (one being sincerity) to. If you are this friend, please, let them know so they can help you with what they know. If you are TRULY helping a brother, tell him to come here and help himself. He will not gain much if he depends on you to relay information to him. I wish you and/or your friend good luck. |

bbdd: Just because of the sheer incoherence of what you posted, I looked up your profile.
In one post you said you graduated with medical lab science, in another post you graduated from delsu with computer science.
Now, you got admission to do medicine in the US. Before I even talk about the rigorous nature of us medical schools admission, the exams you have to write aren't readily available in Nigeria. How did you get admission without writing the exams??
Only you know the game you're playing, don't expect us to buy it. I know some smart guys! I don't know why people find it cool to lie even on a faceless forum. |

bbdd: @amanze15 Try to avoid giving advice based on a single experience and then generalizing it. It's morally wrong to say students try to set TA's up for failure. Why would they do that? Even if they did, doesn;t mean that's the way students behave everywhere in all schools in the US. Come on man. I been a TA , i have been an RA. I had fun doing both and i enjoyed it. Students were nice and courteous.
Try to give advice devoid of your personal opinions because you risk biasing someone's experience. 1,000 LIKES! Aside the demanding schedules, being a TA or RA is fun! Some of your students will send a "Thank You" email to you and you will instantly forget all your worries. |

prayerrain: hi gurus please I need your advice once again I am currently filling a grad assistantship form which requires me to indicate the kind of assistantship I would prefer out of three ( Teaching Assistantship, Research Assistantship, and Service Assistantship) To say the truth I really want to underline the three but on the other hand I am thinking I might look desperate. so my question is 1. if I indicate all three, does it make me a desperate, unserious applicant that doesn't know what she wants? 2. if I indicate only research assistantship, wont I be depriving myself of the other two opportunities ? 3. if I indicate only research assistantship, will they automatically review my application for the other two?
. NOTE : I have some experiences in all three forms of assistantships at least I have been teaching for some years now. I need this funding seriously... please help a sister. What most schools do is to ask you rank in order of preference. Since this is not the case with you, do as instructed. Just choose the one you think you are most suitable for. And tilt some aspects of your application to reflect experience in the one you prefer. You need not worry yourself. If you are qualified for what you want, you will get it. Good luck, sir. |

There are tons of Nigerian grad students in that school with funding. Anyways, since you are already skeptical about it, why not try some other 'safe' schools, sir? |

I think a fundamental piece of the puzzle being left out of this funding debate is the actual credibility and INTELLECTUAL CAPACITY of the said person seeking funding
To future applicants, No school in the US is going to go all out to fund you if you don't show a very good intellectual capability. That goes without saying. Your test scores have to be good and every other aspect of your application has to be great as well. Also, ability to carry out research is important.I can say this most guys on nairaland who got funding didn't get their schools by typing "SUGGEST SCHOOLS FOR ME" here on nairaland. They actually went online and did some good research which pretty much forms the basis of a good graduate career. Ability to do research.
Also research your school!, check the weather(There are tons of apps to do this), diversity(if you care about that), cost of living, tuition fees. No one on nairaland can help you unless they are in the same school which is not so common.
Also, funding opportunities are most times given by the DEPARTMENT /PROGRAM and not as a school wide decision. Get in touch with the program chairs of the department you wish to apply to , write them an email. This is the first step.
If you need any help along the way, there are lots of guys here to give you a helping hand. Be it with SOP or logistics or just good ol' advice but please be capable of doing some research on schools and make sure you ace your standardized tests.
Bests to all applicants. Spot on! Everything boils down to your points, really. How are you doing, bro? |

Also, how we de do this exchange rate wahala Bro, you can get funding in any school that has funding, if and only if you have a competitive application file. |

I will not judge the poster I just quoted, but I hope folks trying to come over will take a cue from his/her experience. America is not running away, let us take doses of chill pills when we are making life decisions. If funding no dey the offer, no reason am, at all! Guys, always, always, try to get funding; even if anyone is telling you not to worry, still, try to apply for funding. You do not want to be stranded or depressed in America. Good luck to everyone. |

cuteconnec: Dear Friends and Gurus,
I urgently need help with a candid advice. i have not really been following this tread but i bow for gurus here.
I started applying for USA graduate schools in Oct 2015. I wanted to resume in Jan 2016-Spring, so i only targeted schools with very late application deadlines.
I did all the GRE, TOEFL and VISA interview stuffs and succeeded getting admission in 3 schools. 1. UALR- University of Arkansas at Little Rock - Phd (Integrated computing) 2. SIUE- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville - MSc (computer science) 3. UNO - University of Nebraska, Omaha - Msc (Management Information Systems-MIS)
The decision from UALR came so quick so i presented their i20 at the embassy and got the visa. Though i preferred the MIS course at UNO, but they did not decide on time. I Applied for funding in UALR but didn't get anything. Also some old naija folks at the school strongly discouraged me from coming..Finally, my admission at UNO clicked on Jan 6, I got into US on Jan 8th and decided to transfer from UALR to UNO. The transfer went pretty easy and i flew to Omaha.
On arriving here, i discovered the situation here was worse than i ever imagine, even though i got the course i wanted to study, i couldn't get any funding, tuition is very high, black population here is negligible, and the cold here na die. I have not figured out how i will pay the tuition yet, but i pray i will scale through this semester.
I plan to complete one semester and transfer to another school. Which school can i get guaranteed Graduate Assistant ship or funding? If i loose my status in this school(i don't pray for that-worst case scenario), can i possibly apply afresh again in another school since i am already in the usa? Who knows the possibility of transferring credits from Management Information Systems to a course like electrical engineering?
Any valuable input will be most appreciated. Thank you Wish you good luck in sorting yourself out. cc Imperiouxx, MsNas, BigFrancis21, OjaP |
