godG: You see,in Nigeria, I was a red-capped chief. It was a point-and-kill kind of life. My mama was my number one mender. In America, everything changed. Now I have to do EVERY DAMN COOKING myself. This oyinbo no respect my chieftaincy title. I could not take it anymore so I sent out an SOS message to MsNas and other distinguished member of the thread. So, today, being a free day, I took of my red cap and ran into the kitchen. MsNas, this is for you. I got all I needed in an Asian store; and spent close to $70 to get groceries that could last me a month and this is what my ase looks like after two hours in the kitchen: I couldn't locate our blender when I started. Saw it when I was almost done cooking. I hope I tried. Oh, you wont know that. I know I did.

MsNas: Lmao. You can't get epo in Mexican stores. But I think I've sent it in once Chinese store in North Little Rock before. I even forgot to include Chinese stores. They sell Nigerian kinds of stuff too. What I enjoy buying from there though is fish. They sell the Nigerian kinda of mackerel (commonly called alaran) and since that is the only fish I can tolerate I'm in bliss. I've seen oloyin beans, dried fish, dried pepper, curry and all other stuff there too
Check out Indian stores too. They have cheap food too. What we usually buy there is rice. They have this box of parboiled rice....almost 28lbs for $12. It will last you very very long. Walmart sells a bag of its 1lb rice for $5.99 or so. Not economical. Thank you! I really appreciate this! Now I know what to look out for and where to get them? |

MsNas: $100 is even too much sef (at least for me. Lol). I'm assuming you have Nigerian food stashed up in your house, they make your grocery shopping less expensive and this is why I always tell anybody I know coming from Nigeria to bring lots and lots of food. Infact, the only thing I ask from my mom is to send me Nigerian food as I am a picky eater and barely eat American. Most of the time, I don't spend up to a $100 on groceries a month when I'm in Arkansas cos its only me and I have almost everything I need for food. All I get is cereal, veggies (spinach and those peas and stuff), chicken or beef, and some other stuff.
I will suggest you buy those things at Walmart or Kroger (if you have those around), and buy them in bulk, you get, more value for your money that way. Don't go to places like Vons or Safeway, things are more expensive. If y'all have those Mexican grocery stores around, they're your surest bet. Groceries are cheaper there and the food is somewhat similar to African food. I spend less than $100 shopping for a whole month at those stores and gosh, everywhere will be filled by the time you're done shopping with $80
Best of all, know the stores that have the cheapest prices on different items so that you can clock in some awesome savings. Although I need to warn you that it's a pain shopping for groceries at different stores without a car but I tell you its worth it. Like sometimes, Vons sell red bell peppers for 3 piece a dollar, while walmart has their's for $1.58 a piece, but I also won't buy water from Vons cos a pack of 24 Aquafina costs almost $8 while a 32 pack of the same brand costs less than $5 at walmart. See how much you can save by buying bell pepper from Vons and water from Walmart. It can seem inconsequential but if you're an heavy shopper or eater, you will actually save quite a few bucks. By the time you've done grocery shopping for three or four months, you'll know which stores have the best deals on which item and know how to plan your shopping. Goodluck This is what I am saying! Thank you! So it could be cheaper? I will consider EVERYTHING you have said. Can I also get epo pupa in Mexican stores? I have someone who is ready to drive me anywhere. Thank you for this, you are saving the life of a Nigerian who is too Nigerian for American foods. |

To those in need of temporary accommodation, you should consider talking to them at the International Students' Office. When I got to Madison, I got an American family to accommodate me for free through the ISO. They gave me a bike, winter clothes, fed me, took me to get basic things, drove me round the city of Madison, etc. They get worried whenever I didn't eat their food. Simply put, before leaving Nigeria, try to explore every temporary accommodation opportunities through your ISO. What I have noticed is that many of us don't read through the website of the school we intend going well enough. Right now, many of my friends here are even amazed I got such a deal. The difference: I did my homework from Nigeria. Remember, whatever you are passing through isn't permanent. It shall pass. Nothing is permanent in this world; bliss, pain, triumph, etc. None is forever. Peace. |

bathchedars: Hello house, I'm an English Language final year student and I am presently applying for my MA in English in the US. My major challenge at the moment is how to go about writing a good WRITING SAMPLE . I am completely new to the terrain and I need help on how to write a good one. I will be most grateful if the veterans in this house can give helpful advice on how to achieve this. thanks. Morning. First, I think you haven't done enough research on the course you intend studying. In most U.S. universities, English as a department has many specialisations under it. A typical English department could have the following areas of specialisation: 1.English (what we call Literature here) 2.Composition and Rhetorics 3.TESOL 4.Literature of Migration 5.Business English 6.Language and Communication 7.Creative Writing, etc. What you should do now is to find out what area you want and what your intended schools call it, and write. I'm telling you this so that you won't ignorantly turn in a sample ideally meant for TESOL for Composition and Rhetorics. After knowing what you want, to answer your question, then (1) go to the website of your prospective department, look out for what one or two Profs are interested in, then tilt your writing along that line. (2) Another way to do it is by using any of your past publications, if you have any. (3) Or, you can ask one of your lecturers here in Nigeria to give you an academic topic to write on. Such topic must be related to what you want to specialize in. (4) You could also consult your final year question papers and pick GOOD and challenging questions. Don't just run to the Internet, you must be weary of plagiarism. Ire o. |

texrem: Sorry to say dis....English dico refer dude as a man... and if he's the VO n he's my friend...I'd refer to him as dude.. don't bring up something that doesn't count pls.. thanks for the motivation
I promise to fire back LOL! It counts. You don't use words just like that. Haven't you heard of Pragmatics before? You need to learn how to pick your words, sir. And judging from your bad choice of words, is the VO we are talking about here your friend? So because "dude" is a man, you can use it anyhow? Please do me a favor, in your next interview (visa or non-visa), refer to whoever interviews you as dude/baby. Your choice of words paints a picture of you in the mind of the hearer/reader. Sir, maybe you should read up on Politeness Principles. And what do I stand to gain by bringing up what doesn't matter? Here is me telling you that your words matter. Please know. My joy and that of most guys here is to see you win. Let's learn to be strong in defeat. Calmness is power. Reapply. Dot the Is and cross the Ts. I wish you well. |
