Nowenuse: There is a strong belief on the sabotage of Eastern ports in favour of Lagos ports. I really can't say who is to blame for it. And I don't wish to tow this line of argument.
Of course, Kano has a high population, nobody is arguing that. What we are asking of is the quality of human beings living there. Why should u compare a people who are predominantly illiterates to those who are predominantly literates? what do you mean by the quality of human beings there? have you been to Kano? my guy pls travel and get your facts right. You call a city with an International airport predominantly full of illiterates? this is what you get when nairaland is your main source of information and as for the strong belief that eastern ports are not favoured like lagos ports, its all lies and propaganda. The Lagos ports are what it is because of the geography as a true Natural harbour which favours bigger ships than other ports in Nigeria and secondly the fact that Lagos have better basic amenities than other cities in Nigeria which foreigners will prefer. You guys would have cried more if states like ogun and ondo had got their acts together before now as they possess even better geography for deep sea ports for more bigger ships to berth there. No be our fault say God bless us. |

Grayoso: Dont mind the the obdurate chap who only wants to create hollow arguments, incapable of standing up to critical scrutiny, because he simply wants to avoid giving the Yorubas credit where due.
He tries to nullify my submission with tangled and contorted logic that even further proves my point. We are talking of better business models replacing what was in place and he asks: "Can Asians match English middle-class in London?" when this is irrelevant to the central argument which is that even Asians, the erstwhile traditional kings of the corner shop, now prefer to shop in Tesco Express and Sainbury local shops rather than patronise the Asian grocers.
Same would apply to Lagos. If Igbos relinquish the spare part ghettos of Ladipo et al, it wont be long before the vacuum created leads a Lebanese, Yoruba, South African or Indian business to set up the equivalent of Eurocarparts or gsfcarparts which are chains selling aftermarket and OEM ( original equipment manufacturer)parts for mainly German and swedish cars.
Simply take your car chassis number there and the part is available in minutes over the counter or you can even check stock before showing up to pick up. It is the future and will replace, standardize and regulate the garbage Igbos call 'spare part business'. I have a 2016 VW Touareg jeep and would not buy parts in Nigeria because I can use my chassis number to find the part I need in the UK and order it to my UK shippers address who would then send it to Nigeria for me to collect in Ikeja. That way I can never buy the wrong part as anything I purchase is chassis-matched.
https://www.eurocarparts.com/ https://www.gsfcarparts.com/
Even Igbos, middleclass or whatever, will patronise the spare parts model I cite above in preference to buying with their kinsman, because it is much better and more efficient, if someone can actually deliver such a model.
What Igbos dont realise is that only bigger and better organised businesses stand to replace the messy models they pride so much much like hiw modern houses are the only options to replace the eyesore of the past. From what I write, what would I need Igbos for? And if a vacuum suddenly created by Igbos leaving are there not many Yorubas , even more knowledgeable than myself, who will step in to bridge the gap and ensure the absence of Igbos has no long term deleterious effect? if not for our bad economy that makes us buy tokunboh cars that still depend on that dirty ladipo market, the igbos will be the ones to shout if Govt start insisting on total ban on tokunboh cars. |

Barbilius: How many of those shops pay taxes Majority of them do not pay any taxes whatsoever, and if they want to claim import duties, they should quickly be reminded that import duties go straight to Federal government purse. exactly what I mean bruv, I just don't want to go into details, the corner corner shops are not adding value at all, reason why the state govt at times don't mind demolishing them to pave way for better business models that will bring huge revenue to the state |

Nowenuse: Of course, u guys were first exposed to these things, but other Nigerians have matched up with you guys in these things.
100 years ago, Hausa fulanis were the most educated and well travelled Nigerians. Today is that still the case?
How can you compare Kano (Hausa land where majority of the people are illiterate fanatics) to anywhere else? Abuja & PH are the only places that are any close for such comparison.
Industrialization without a viable market is as good as useless as the P in psychology.
Bringing in the civil service here is rubbish. Is Lagos a civil service driven state?
If you are talking of industries in Lagos, can you really beat your chest and say that the Industry sector in Lagos has a higher worth and contributes more to the citizens of Lagos than the SME industry? you lie, pls educate yourself Kano is a very high cosmopolitan city like Lagos, its no joke that an international airport is situated there which shows the number of the elites there. You guys need to educate yourself more about Nigeria. |

Barbilius: Oga corn/maize is grown all over the southwest, hell my dad just planted maize on his farm 2 weeks ago. In fact, I personally know a young farmer who grows water melonand cucumber and pineapple in surulere local government area of oyo state along the ogbomoso ilorin expressway. The only thing we largely get from the north is pepper, onions, while cabbages, lettuces, are not really that common among every folks, only the few elites eats cabbages and luttuces. most folks are just ignorant, so true that a lot of farming goes on along that oyo-ogbomoso-Ilorin corridor which I have seen. Truth is the SW states outside Lagos have been grossly under reported and underrated. No thanks too to the ignoramus on nairaland who come here to spew lies. |

Grayoso: Igbos lack sophistication, worldview and exposure. This is why, of all ethnic groups, Igbos host the highest number of "money miss road" in Nigeria i.e wealthy people with no class, style or finesse to match their wealth.
This is primarily because Igbos, unlike others, are materialistic and very shallow. Acquiring money at all cost, even at the expense of personal development, is paramount above all for Igbos. This is why it is common to see many unsophisticated, unrefined and 'Bush' rich Igbos.
This also is why Igbos cannot understand that having businesses in Lagos that generate wealth does not mean others cannot easily replace that with even bigger and better models.
In the 70ties, 80ties and even 90ties the cornershop were a staple of British grocery shopping to the extent even the Pakistanis would be forgiving if they claimed British small grocery shopping sector would collapse if they close shop.
Instead, in the 2000s and beyond, big supermarket started buying smaller shops to create condensed versions of their big stores on high streets and in the traditional corners the Asian shops used to dominate.
These are called Tesco Express and Sainsbury Local etal. This model has now run many Asian grocers out of business. That is precisely what will happen in Lagos if Igbos leave because the world stands still for no one and a vacuum is often an opportunity to replace what is gone with bigger and better. well said, nature truly abhors vacuum |

Nowenuse: And these industries would not have been cited in Lagos if not for the monopolization of ports and the large cosmopolitan population of the city.
If Abuja was the one with the high population like Lagos, do u think most investors will invest in Lagos over Abuja? Do you understand what industrialization really mean? other ports have also existed? your question should be why Lagos? there was a time Warri many years ago was coming up strongly that even many yorubas live there so what happened? at times we should look inwards before blaming others for our woes |
Politics › Re: What Does The S/west Produce That Compares With The North? by Goke7: 11:08pm On Apr 14, 2020 |
Nowenuse: What you are saying makes sense, but it is only applicable when these settlers do not have a large population of that area.
Do u know the percentage of Igbo middle-class citizens living in Lagos? I don't even think Yorubas will outnumber Igbos per middle-class citizens in Lagos.
Can Asians match English middle-class in London? Your analogy is not good enough.
Imagine if half of the Middleclass citizens in London relocate.... Will it not shake London to the core? do you really follow global trends? and you are asking this question? |
Politics › Re: What Does The S/west Produce That Compares With The North? by Goke7: 11:05pm On Apr 14, 2020 |
Nowenuse: Chaghoury & Dangote are investing in Lagos because of the high money & human capital there, the high population and huge market and half of it are Non-Yorubas. Why don't they go and invest in Ibadan, Iseyin or Iwo?
Make una nor worry now, Nigeria will divide in less than 10 years from now. We will witness all these things. The high and human capital is a result of the high level of industrialization and not population, if not Kano is also highly populated for Dangote and co to invest like they do in Lagos. Ibadan and Ogun state will begin to level up seriously with Lagos when the Lagos-Ibadan railway line begins operation. Industrialization is what is driving Lagos and Ogun states and not just population and when that railway is open, it will rub off on Oyo state big time even presently there are lots of industries springing up in Ibadan and environs. |

Nowenuse:
All the Lebanese & Indians in Lagos put together, are they up to 100k?
And do you think u will feel comfortable if 35% of the people in Lagos are Indians & Lebanese? People who despise and look down on blacks?
Go to Nairobi, Dar es Salam and these east African cities where Indians were settled by the colonial masters and see the high level of discrimination and segregation blacks endure in their own motherland. Can you intermarry and integrate with these Indians & Lebanese like the way you people do with Igbos? You think say na clear eye make Idi Amin pursue Indians commot for Uganda ba?
Seriously, Igbos to me are so much obsessed with leaving their homelands. I myself don't understand why.
If not for the high immigration of Idomas & Igalas into Abuja that have countered Igbo immigration, Abuja would have been dominantly Igbo by now.
Well, I think it could be cos their land is very small, hence creating strong scarcity of land and expensiveness. Thereby a higher cost of living and stronger competition. Igbos also have a strong Culture of competition. This could also be the reason many of them flee their homelands.
Go to Kaduna city south and see the way Igbos are buying lands there. what the less than 100k indians, lebanese and co control in Lagos is 100 times more that what the entire igbos have in Lagos, Industry is what is making Lagos not ordinary trade and commerce |

Nowenuse: Igbos are overwhelmingly Catholic/Anglican, however, currently they are something like 65% and 35% Pentecostal. In the past, Pentecostals would be like 15% in Igbo land. Many of their younger people, especially those who migrate out of Igbo land are leaving Catholicism to Pentecostalism.
So pls, Igbos are now a significant number in Pentecostalism. Check Dunamis & Salvation ministries (biggest Pentecostal brands in the Middlebelt & SS) and u will see that Igbos make up like 35% of both churches. Especially the Delta & Rivers Igbos (these ones are not strongly Catholic like those in the SE).
Yes, Orthodox Churches of SUM origin like ECWA, COCIN, CRCN, EYN e.t.c dominate the Middlebelt & the north with like 70%. However, we also have many Pentecostal converts too just like the Igbos and the numbers keep growing everyday. We also have a strong native Baptist, Seventh day Adventist & even White garment population.
And mind you, not only Pentecostal members attend Pentecostal based universities. As long as they are Christian schools, all middle-class christians prefer them for their wards.
Yes, there are international students in Covenant, but what are their percentages? Like 0.5%. My brother went there and I asked him these questions. As for abroad based Nigerians who come to covenant universitiy, it's almost same percentage between Yorubas & Non-Yorubas and many of these abroad based Nigerians actually get expelled cos they cannot keep up with the strict religious doctrines in the school.
See bros, I was in Tafawa Balewa town in Bauchi some months ago and the town felt a little bit dry to me, considering it's size. You just know something is missing there. Hausa fulanis were evicted from that town by Sayawa natives 9 years ago and that was the reason for that emptiness. Hausa fulanis are an enterprising people unlike we Middlebelt tribes and when they left, the vibes of that place was no longer there.
You and me know that you Yorubas are also not as enterprising as Igbos. If Igbos leave Lagos, it's not as if Lagos will completely die, no! But it will loose it's appeal, it's vibes, it's cosmopolitanism. Capital ownership & Consumer population will reduce. I just don't know to explain this for u to get, until u have experienced something like this u won't get what I'm saying.
And who will replace Igbos if they leave Lagos? Hausa fulanis? Beninoise? Togolese?
See, Settlers actually give every cosmopolitan city a certain vibes that won't be there.
Jos would have been as cosmopolitan as Kaduna, but many settlers fled Jos due to the repeated crisis. When I was in Kaduna recently, men it felt like I was in the South. The city was just very cosmopolitan, unlike Jos where natives outnumber settlers everywhere (except for Hausa areas).
Lagos would be like Ibadan if Igbos leave. If Nigerdeltans & Middlebelters also leave, it will be like Ogbomosho, Osogbo or Iwo. Lagos is an international city and you guys know it, if the igbos leave, it will only make more room for the indians, chinese, lebanese and other asians who are even more business savvy than the igbos and will only make Lagos look more international. The igbos are the ones who need Lagos more than Lagos need them. |
