But the operators are the ones determining the price now. The understanding of OLIGOPOLY market will suffice. They started with creating artificial scarcity to push up the exchange rate of the dollar to the Naira...... The banks seeing this occasionally push their dollar to them to make more profit. That was the beginning of the decline of this economy
the price is determined by demand and supply. none of the operators can single handedly influence or fix the price, there are countless bureau de change offices nationwide competing against each other.

So Are u telling me that Buhari should fear protesting youth? Protest is the least thing that can make A former military general afraid of visiting any part of Nigeria. This Ipob thinks the president moves with two body guard, lol, the escort he carries is enough to massacre a hoard of violent protesters in minutes.

bros, you're still using the old school formula o,in the current curriculum, subjects like civic studies are compulsory.

Please don't expect OAU to accept subjects like fisheries, computer studies, catering and all these newly introduced subjects like home economics, civic education for screening into Medicine and Surgery, OAU only accepts the core science subjects (best cool That's why Further maths (B2) was picked from her result and computer studies (A1) was neglected.
The second point is that the quota for merit admission is 45% and the merit is irrespective of your state of origin, so for her to be admitted she must be part of the first 45/100 of the candidates that applied since she's not from any of the catchment areas which is alloted 35% and ELDS 20%.
Generally speaking now, candidates now run away from subjects like Economics, Agricultural science, Geography etc in their WASSCE, while they opt for subjects like fishery, Animal Husabandry, catering etc because of the higher chances of making distinctions in those subjects. There are chances that these subjects might not be accepted and screened for you during the POST-UTME screening depending on the department you are applying to. That's why some people would submit 9 subjects and at the end only five subjects would be picked neglecting the likes of woodworks, catering etc.
students don't run away from such subjects but are rather forced into it by the federal government who introduced the new curriculum. it's also worsened by teachers most of whom are either not university graduates or gained admission themselves through the Backdoor, talking from experience .

Biafra? Please don't distort my sense of reasoning this morning or drag me along that ethnic dialogue.

My logic is that we Africans are doing much better than those Western countries when they were at our age as a nation and therefore it wouldn't take us as long as it took them to become developed and besides you are quoting about their present age as the time it took them to develop and that not correct.

My prediction is that given another 20 to 30 years from now Africa countries would've developed if they stay united as a nation. South Sudan is a sad example, so be careful what you wish for, even if Biafra ever come to existence do you sincerely think there is unity amongst the Ibos now to ensure survival going forward as on nation with all this greedy and selfish leaders around.
at the rate we're going as a country, we would be worse off in the next 20 years. most secessionist states ended up better than their mother nations, Singapore a tiny secular island is worlds ahead of her mother nation Malaysia which is an Islamic sultanate
this is a better example to describe the Nigeria vs biafra scenario. anybody still having faith in Nigeria is..... . have you seen threads on the 2017 budget.

Why do you say that! You mean the FBI or MI5 or Mossad or KGB cannot carryout same operation to prevent breakdown of law and order in Europe, America that you think are blessed? Maybe you guys saying all these things about Africa should read the history of these nations you cherish so much when they were about the average age of most African countries now. For instance go back in history and read what America, England, France, Russia was like economically, politically, and general living standards was when they were between 50 to 60 years as independent nations then you might understand how badly we are doing in Africa.

The DSS just carried out a professional operation by all standard that's if you understand what the rules of engagement are. The police would have broken the law if they conducted such operation but the DSS has the authority to do this.

What most of you don't understand is that without a very efficient service like this from DSS the nation will crumble. Kudos to their operatives may the blood of our hero's past protect them and the protection of God be with them. It's by all measure a dangerous task to do particular when you have to follow rules while doing it.
if I'm to follow your logic, it will take Nigeria over two hundred years to develop while following the same path by America and Britain. please biafra during it's short existence has shown we can achieve much in one generation.

smada13:
Had it been you have a full understanding of the Nigerian export n import business environment, you won't have written this cuz Kemi was actually right. The first problem Nigeria faced came from the black market, forcing the exchange rate of dollars indiscriminately through the creation of artificial scarcity so as to make exorbitant gains, and some commercial banks toed that line, offering to sell dollar to bureau de change operators instead of business people cuz of the gains they want to make.

And since that month of September 2014, the economy hasn't recovered.... All other problems compounded the debacle.

Think through before you criticize. Thanks
bureau de change is the parallel or black market. Nigeria adopted a two tier exchange rate after buhari military regime was kicked out. during his regime, possession of foreign currency carries heavy penalty including death and the result was serious dollar scarcity. a two tier exchange rate means that there must exist a parallel market in order for the exchange rate to be determined by market forces.

then you need to go back to school to learn your economics again and while you are at it I suggest english.

while you are awaiting admission for night school, let me help you: there are no "different types of monopoly"

A monopoly (from Greek μόνος mónos ("alone" or "single"wink and πωλεῖν pōleîn ("to sell"wink) exists when a specific person or enterprise is the only supplier of a particular commodity (this contrasts with a monopsony which relates to a single entity's control of a market to purchase a good or service, and with oligopoly which consists of a few sellers dominating a market

there is nothing like "monopolistic competition", it's a misnomer...you may want to check the dictionary for that as well.

As far as Ibeto, correct me if I am wrong but Ibeto was only bagging imported cement. His problems are due to the fact that imported cement is too expensive once Dangote started. There are 5 cement manufacturers in Nigeria lafarge, CCNN, Dangote, UCC and Ashaka. Anybody else in cement is an importer.

Nonetheless Ibeto is currently setting up his own proper cement manufacturing plant...nobody is stopping him, as you can see the chinese company building Ibeto's plant for $390m is the same one that has built $9B worth of cement plants across Africa. If Dangote wanted to frustrate Frustrate Ibeto, he would have prevented them from building cement plants for anybody in Nigeria. Companies have such clauses in their contracts all the time. My compnay has a clause with some of our foreign consultants that they cannot work with anyone in Nigeria while they work for us and for 1-2 years after they leave us.

http://www.financialnigeria.com/ibeto-cement-in-390-million-deal-with-chinese-firm-news-142.html
since you have resorted to insults let's call it a day but Google monopolistic competition and know that ibeto license was suddenly withdrawn without notice or reason because he was selling below dangote price and people preferred his product claiming it stores longer than dangote not to talk of the clannish mentality, his license was only later returned by yardua after he has lost a shipload of bulk cement and suffered a stroke, he's cement business is just recently recovering from that loss.

1st of all go and check the meaning of monopoly. there is no industry Dangote operates in where you are have no choice but to buy his products so he is not a monopoly. I can't remember when last I bought anything Dangote. While you are checking the meaning of monopoly and since google is your friend, just google vaswani, stallion and their numerous scandals

That said every big business uses their influence to gain favour. But which industry does Dangote operate where he is the only one? Is he the only one in cement or Sugar....which?
can you substantiate your allegations? dangote is the dominant one because of government backed monopoly, only the likes of bua can compete with him now.

@saydfact,

thanks for this thread. I really appreciate It tremendously. It is really helpful cos I lately started considering building my own house. I thought my income is too small to think of building now but after reading this, im really motivated to start.
I already have a target plan sketched in MS powerpoint, it is very similar to what you posted here. I have taken what you posted and gone ahead to make changes to it with MS Paint (just the way I want it, your suggestions would also be welcomed and considered).
I have 2 plots of land each at 2 different locations in Port Harcourt. My plan is to sell 2, use the proceed to build on 1 plot and let the other plot appreciate over the coming years (future investment for my kids).

of course, the plan needs the professional's touch to bring it up to scale. One major difference now would be the cost of materials in PH compared to your case study.... it can be significant.

What do you think?..... definitely following this and if all goes to plan, I will keep you abreast of my intentions.

thanks again for sharing this. Oh, let me also state that I like the fact that you go with the professional options.... way to go, buddy.
the cost of materials is always the same but the cost of labour in ph is extremely high, the solution would be to hire a builder from let's say anambra or enugu to come with his own crew that would charge you anambra rates to work in ph.

We want to use 409M for sensitisation? If we judiciously spend the 409m and other budgeted expenses on something meaningful and impactful, i dont think we really need any sensitisation of 409M. But come to think of it, why are these people mortgaging the future of this nation? Repairing and renovating buildings year in year out with unthinkable and incredible amount of money. The rate at which we are going, car and buses will be more than the occupant and workers in the state house.
and buhari wants to borrow more than our national foreign reserves to sponsor this budget.
