Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by greenskittles: 5:36am On Sep 11, 2020
Hi again, I've done a little research, and I think this is what I need:

A portable powerbank with pure sine wave AC output, and 250-300W continuous power output. Capacity should be above 200 Wh at the very least. 300Wh preferred. Basically well above 60,000 mAh

It should be able to be charged directly with NEPA light, but also be charged with a Solar Panel. Please suggest the minimum solar panel that can charge the aforementioned power bank in a reasonable time.

Basically I need something like the keepworkpower.com home system that can offer higher continuous power output.

Can anyone here get this?

ceaser:

If the Lumos you wrote about is similar to that MTN Lumos package then that's not an "inverter". It's more like a whole system. That is, battery + inverter + charge controller in one box, in a small form factor.

That being said, for the merciless power-hungry 230w laptop charger, you may get by with a 500 watts inverter if you are low on budget. You will also need to get batteries, AC battery charger and/or charge controller plus solar panels to complete the system.
Thank you for your detailed reply, I appreciate it.

It's not about being "a poor nation" they know we are richer than them all round.
It's about the bad behaviours of our young people here.

There are still lots of Nigerians in UAE who aren't disturbed.
Many low paid employees from Nigeria do alot terrible things here.
Many are into Yahoo Yahoo, they sandine themselves into one apartment, some of them bully their fellow Nigerias and other national they flat with.
Just yesterday evening a fellow Nigerian told me that her Nigerian neighbour who was owing their landlord Aed.3000, wanted to escape without paying his accumulated rents. He was packing his stuff bit by bit until the Security man/Janitor who is also Nigerian asked his neighbour to him monitor this tenant as it appears he was escaping gradually.
The neighbour had earlier bullied the lady and his escape with unpaid rents could implicate the Janitor and cost him his job.
These and many more are the dealings of our young people here and they're closing the doors on others.
Many other nationals now know Nigerians to be trouble.
My residents Visa was renewed during the pandemic as a health care employee.
More people need to read this.

The people arguing on the first page of this thread are not aware that outside Nigeria we are treated as one people. Nobody cares which ethnic group you belong to.

Travel / Re: Why Do Your Friends Ignore You When They Finally Travel Out Of The Country? by greenskittles: 1:17pm On Sep 04, 2020
SoccerUSA:
As seen in the topic, I have two friends that travelled to the U.S, One travelled 2014 and the other one 2017, though before they left we had a good vibes we were both close if not best friends before they left.

The one of 2014 stopped texting me at 2018 or so even when I wished him birthday wishes and same with the other. I knew this because I only texted them on Facebook and you will know when they read and not reply.

I don't hold any grudges against them though
Did you guys think it's normal? Like if I leave Nigeria, Would I also ignore my friends text even if they do not request anything from me?

Please can someone just explain to me so I won't see my friends (maybe former friends) as bad ones.

My opinion, when they move they make new friends, are completely exposed to a new reality, and have to adjust to that. In the beginning they still constantly talk to you but over time it tends to fade away as you both have very little in common at that point. After 3 years of them living in the US, they really just can't relate to most things you would typically have small talk about. I believe that leaving your message read and not replied was very rude, and they should've at least appreciated that you showed concern to them. But "calling just to greet" everytime, after 3 years quickly gets old. If you guys were not that close, a point you start to wonder what you "really" want.

Also add to the fact that some people think everyone that has travelled has suddenly become Bill Gates. You might not show that mentality but other people might have shown your friend hell. Then it gets to a point that your overly friendly demeanor when you have nothing in common to talk about means you want to ask them for something, even though you may not. Coupled with the fact that they're already burdened with so many responsibilities, they might just not have time to for that.

With your next friend that travels (lol) if you want to maintain contact you need to both find common ground. They can't relate to "NEPA has taken light" and you can't relate to "my taxes are too damn high". So if you're going to stay in contact, you need to find something both of you do.

It's just like your secondary school friends, how many of them do you still talk to? The school was probably the glue holding you all together, and upon graduation you drifted apart, except from those that you actually have something in common to constantly relate to.

If you got it through an illegal means (i.e stealing from his profits) and you're feeling guilty, invest the money (all of it) into your boss' shop and never steal from him again. When it's time for you to go your boss will see how the shop he entrusted to you has greatly increased in value and he'll be pleased. That's just what I think. It's very easy to call other people, (including Nigerian politicians) criminals, but here you are in their shoes. Do the right thing. Even if your boss doesn't reward you when you leave your experience from working under him will be more than enough to make sure your own business is successful.

I don't even know why I'm still following this topic, that was how I joined a spin-off WhatsApp group chat from here and was laughed at when I said I wanted to go to Stanford. Today we had a meeting with the international center and they made us know that there's still a top level push by executives of a coalition of schools to ensure visa processing goes through. Nobody's stupid, people have made their own personal worst case scenario plans, but hoping for the best case scenario is always greeted with mockery here.
Fyi, they made us know that one of the responses they got was that a lot of staff left their posts when the crisis hit, so embassies are understaffed. The Schengen region has a ban on US citizens so there's no way they'll be sending officials there right now, and a lot of countries haven't opened their airspace. These were some of the things my school officials talked about today and I don't see the crime in hoping things work out even when I've prepared for alternative scenarios. I think I'm done with this thread, a lot of Nigerians are toxic people- don't know if it's the country that made them this way. A while back a lovely man dedicated to Nigerians' success was trying to promote academic excellence here, offering scholastic assistance and financial aid, and they derailed and basically almost tried to rubbish the noble work he was here to do, even saying that standardized test are meaningless and argued to the point that they were ready to die on that hill. Anyway I'm probably not getting the information I need from here and I've shared what I think I can, I hope my posts help people but I've had enough. Good luck to everyone.

P.s, if I'm mentioned here I'll probably not respond.

If you don't already use reddit, I think you should, and there are a few subreddits I'd like to share

r/gradadmissions for graduate admissions related questions

r/gradschool after being admitted

r/ *insert your school name here* e.g r/stanford. Some schools name their subs after something else e.g their mascot, for example the University of Washington's subreddit is r/huskies I think. I've already joined the Stanford chess team thanks to people I met there, and we meet every Sunday. So in case you don't know anyone, or have any questions peculiar to your particular school, you can always post there. As a prospective student of a school, you can also ask questions in their sub but not too often because it's mostly for people who are already members of that school.

r/GRE was VERY VERY HELPFUL in helping me stay motivated and prepared for the GRE, anytime I'd finished studying for the day I'd scroll through looking at questions people posted trying to see if I could answer them, and I also posted questions I thought were too hard for me when I needed help. Also, there are a lot of ambitious people there, so you'll feel equally motivated to post your own great score too.

r/toefl, not so much, it's really just a few Indians and people don't post often but maybe you might find it useful. Btw, if you can do well on the GRE, TOEFL should be a walk in the park

r/ApplyingtoCollege for undergraduate admissions related questions

There are lots more, and if you don't find what you're looking for there, Nairaland is always here to ask questions specific to the Nigerian situation.

cc phenomenalopeye because you ask a lot of undergrad related questions that not many people here seem to be able to answer.

Stop lying mr man
Online betting is legal in the US.
Betmgm, draftkings, FanDuel, betrivers etc

The difference is they all have a way of controlling irresponsible gambling.
For example, you can do the settings such that;

You cant bet above a particular amount in a month.
You can also set the maximum amount of deposits.
You can even do self suspension for 1month, 5 months , 1 year, 5 years sef.

I wasn't lying, I just misinterpreted the law. My bad. Gambling on a site located in the US is illegal, but as long as the site isn't based in the US it is legal in many states.

Nigeria needs to follow Uganda and Kenya's example. Uganda has outlawed sports betting completely. Kenya has stripped 27 companies of their licenses, including the big two Betin and SportPesa.

But no. Naija government now has the bet company owners as lawmakers.
In the US, online gambling is also illegal. Only physical gambling spots that can be regulated are allowed. At least then, someone physically going to a store to throw away all his money might have a rethink. In Vegas some people will even refuse to sell chips to you if they see that you're probably panicking and are going to lose everything. People like Akin Alabi that profited off people's desperation and are now in the government to steal our commonwealth wouldn't exist. Tell me how someone like that could possibly support a ban on online betting.

Modified : Please everyone should ignore this lady.
When someone said people who have left Nigeria forget how it feels to be here and trying to figure out their lives, a lot of people said that wasn't true.

I hate to be that person, but here's a post from you a few years back, asking the EXACT SAME QUESTION that person asked. Probably before you left the shores of Nigeria.

BarristerAlarig:
Hey famz,

Does anyone know any British university that accepts National diploma (lower credit) into a top up degree programme?? If you do, kindly comment.

You can always Google things, yes, and while I agree that the person should've done some personal research, the reason I was admitted on a fully funded fellowship was because I had support from people willing to answer my questions. There's a particular school I didn't apply to because I had travelled to the US on vacation a year prior and happened to meet the Department chair, who told me bluntly that there was no funding and the department was struggling. On the website, they said people were "welcome to apply". Proof that nothing beats human interaction.

I know in Nigeria it's considered disrespectful to question people older than us, and you probably are much older than me, but please sir, even if you wanted to direct them to do their own personal research, I feel you could've done it much nicer. This thread probably wouldn't exist if we could find everything we're looking for in Nigeria. We're all simply trying to better our lives.

The President of the United States earns $400k per annum. Although I might not be the biggest fan of Trump, he was obviously rich before his Presidency, and so he donates every penny of his official salary to different charities.

On the other hand, there's a very real possibility that these Nigerian Senators take home 10x Trump's annual salary.
