Northeastern: I think I agree with you, because practically, it makes sense for them to hire an American if they could. Yes, maybe there are Americans who could take those jobs, but not perform at the level of the immigrant they hired instead. But in a lot of cases they're highly specialized jobs that they couldn't find an American for. I don't see why a company would go through the trouble of sponsoring visas, and hoping that their candidate would win the H1-B visa lottery (because entering the lottery doesn't even guarantee selection), paying all sorts of fees and dealing with uncertainty when they could've just avoided the headache by hiring an American. It means the immigrant is bringing something special to the table... So this new executive order is just weird. America has always been known for being able to attract the best and brightest from all over the world and now Trump wants to end that. There was a petition not too long ago that garnered so many signatures to move some top Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence conference locations away from the US because many of the top researchers around the world couldn't even get visas. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Skillset11:You can apply to places like UT Austin, UCLA, UC Berkeley, University of Washington, Stanford, and even shoot for a few ivy league schools like Brown, Columbia, Cornell, and Duke. With those scores and a compelling statement of purpose (the SOP is honestly very very important) I feel somewhat certain that you'd have a good shot. Also, you can still apply to those safeties as a backup plan. If you have the money, apply to as many as you can. It's not uncommon to apply to up to 10 schools for undergraduate studies, especially since they're less specialized than graduate school (if you can afford it), let the headache you'll have to worry about be which school's offer to accept or decline. 2 Likes |

Aderin0la:Honestly, he's being harsh but he's saying the truth. A Bachelor's degree in Mathematics is no small feat. I have a first class engineering degree but I had the opportunity to work as a graduate assistant in a Mathematics department and I really learned so much, it is honestly not for the faint of heart. The GRE general test doesn't even utilize math beyond the secondary school level, it's just that the logic is pretty tough. Yet the person in question scored 138. Which is akin to scoring 8/40 or even less, since it's scored on a weighted scale. When I saw the GPA, I thought the person was probably facing one life challenge or the other and therefore could not make it in class, but the GRE score makes it certain that they probably don't really know much about math. So if they really think they're passionate about math, here's some steps they can take: -Enroll in NOUN or some other school as a non-degree seeking student. Take courses relevant to their supposed interest in Mathematics and pass them WELL. After all there have been geniuses in math that were poor in some other sections, like [s]I really can't remember this guy's name but he was horrible at Number Theory but he's a legend for something else.[/s] Ernst Eduard Kummer (1810–1893), who was an expert at Number Theory but struggled to remember basic multiplications. There's a story of him teaching his students and being unable to multiply 9*7. -Retake the GRE and score high in the quantitative section. Honestly, if they can't, they shouldn't be looking at a masters in math because that should be really basic for them. -Take the Math GRE. Some disciplines such as math, chemistry, physics, etc have specialized GREs. They should take this after completing step 1 and then do well enough on it. If the person in question can successfully do all these (just my advice) then they're prepared to apply and possibly even get full funding (especially with a good Math GRE score). Yes, even in spite of their poor undergraduate GPA. Otherwise, it's really just a somewhat wasted endeavor because even if you get admission it could be from a useless for-profit school that just wants to take your tuition money and give you a worthless degree. Or, if it's from a reputable school, they could end up failing out of the program in their first semester. Just my advice sha. I really like the "never say never" attitude, I don't want to say anything negative because people here (and also on a spin-off WhatsApp group chat) were laughing at me when I mentioned the school I wanted to go because of how "big" it is, but I've been accepted there with full funding. But in addition to being determined, you have to be realistic. This is the most practical advice I could think of and if anyone has anything else to share they should too... But in that person's current state a math degree is a no go. 8 Likes |

Adwoa816:Most schools need a minimum of 3.0 for admission, in special cases, 2.5. She might need to retake some relevant courses at a community college or a university as a non-degree seeking student, and then score better on the GRE. It'll be very hard to find a university with those stats, and if you eventually do, make sure that it's not a diploma mill with an unaccredited program and/or low quality content. 1 Like |

If EFCC had announced their Intel on Hushpuppi or even been successful at arresting him, a lot of miscreants/fraud sympathizers would pushed back against it. Squillaci:Lol. I said I didn't trust the validity of the exam because people like my friend barely passed math, and nobody has ever gotten a perfect score in the history of the exam. Then you tried to downplay his intelligence by suggesting that the Nigerian Olympiad is meaningless. So I gave you another indicator of how smart he is and you've now shifted the goalposts. Clearly you're just here to argue. |

Education / Re: 2020 UTME: JAMB Top 10 Candidates Revealed by greenskittles: 1:12pm On Jun 17, 2020 |
I still doubt the credibility of this exam, because of the fact that no student has ever scored a perfect score (i.e 400/400) since it was established. I find that near impossible. I wish I could carry out an experiment where a professor of some engineering field takes it. Also, back then in secondary school, the best student in math in my set (came 3rd in the Nigerian Olympiad for Mathematics, I mean across the whole country, and he also had perfect A1s in every subject in WAEC) scored a measly 227 or so in the UTME, barely passing math. Its especially ridiculous because these same Nigerians take the ACT and/or SAT (which are harder in content) to get into American universities and get top scores like it's nothing. 3 Likes |

In modern society, where men and women should be treated as equals, there's nothing wrong with staying alone if you can afford it and take care of yourself. GeneralPula: EDIT: I initially didn't intend to type this much. Haha Cc tellsblinks Change that number to 97%!! Here's the different classes of "Forex traders" you mostly see. 1. 419/Scammers. They don't know shit about Forex, and they get screenshots of a few good trades, then lure you to "invest" with them. Then they disappear with your money. 2. Forex "teachers". These guys are amateurs themselves. They also know next to nothing about Forex. Well that's a bit harsh. They know the basics but not enough to make profitable earnings. So they recruit "students" and teach them the basics. This information could've been gotten free online, but since humans like having a mentor to look up to, they prey on that ignorance and teach them less than their "school fees" worth. Occasionally, the teacher makes a good trade, and screenshots it to "motivate" their students. But if you actually look behind the scenes, this teacher is running an overall loss or is just managing to break even. 3. Forex + MLM. MLM stands for Multi Level Marketing, i.e pyramid schemes. The only difference here is that unlike popular pyramid schemes like MMM, they're selling a "product"- forex lessons. This "product" is nearly useless as well, and has as much value as the lessons from number 2 above. However, entry into these "schools" is much more expensive than the schools described in number 2, because they claim to have a "premium service". And their evidence is more convincing, because students of these schools actually make money. However, the money these people are making is mostly from the pyramid schemes. They make almost nothing from forex trading. 4. Forex robot sellers: These are programmers with decent knowledge of statistics and programming. They write algorithms with R or Python, develop automated trading software, and sell. These software are not really reliable, because most times they don't put much effort into their development. For those who are mathematics inclined, it's like using lagrangian interpolation to make predictions for a set of values that clearly follows a logarithmic pattern. Sure, it'll converge under certain conditions (and turn a profit), but most times it'll fail. The sellers of these cheap robots never use them themselves. However, big shots, bigwigs in the financial industry also make their own forex robots to trade. Dudes like Warren Buffet for example probably have tens or even hundreds of mathematics PhD holders creating reliable models that help him trade and make money for him in his sleep. 5. Forex investors, these guys have (usually large) sun's of money but can't be bothered to trade themselves, so they place the money in investment accounts and hire someone else to trade for them. In exchange, the person doing the trading gets a commission. There are a lot of scammers on this route too, but there are reliable traders as well, hard to find though. 6. Lastly, the legit forex traders. These guys have done an immense amount of personal study, have lost money learning (to become a good trader, there's no way you won't lose money). And have perfected their strategy and now are making good money, enough to earn a living. This is like 1-2% of all traders. Then maybe about 0.1% actually become millionaires from it making incredible sums. Nobody can really teach you this. All the resources are available on the internet. There are books, videos, and everything, but it's something you have to learn from experience. A good starting point is babypips school of pipsology. I'm a beginner myself. I used to be really interested in financial markets but I'll be starting my Masters soon so won't have time to study as much as I like. If you have the mental strength, and patience, and really want to be a forex trader, the truth is nobody can really teach you. Forex trading without education and experience is no different from sports betting. 6 Likes |

For example understanding linear transformations helps if you want to know what a 3D image would look like if you rotate it about an angle.
