When I was younger, whenever I asked my mom for something she didn't want to do or deemed impossible she'd either say "when fish grow teeth" or "when pigs can fly". Well here's a fish with teeth mom, can I have pizza for breakfast now? grin

It appears all countries that have resumed US visa processing have also resumed international flights. Just an observation.

Naturally, one should only be able to apply for Visa from a country at which they are legal residents. Ofcourse you would have to show prove of residency

I got that screenshot through this link

Alright, thanks

Yes
Wait, does this mean we can apply for visas in another country? Or is this restricted to cities within the same country?

Guys pls, if I choose Abuja when filling my DS-160, can I choose Lagos when booking an interview?

Disclaimer: I am not trying to book an interview atm, I have just changed my mind to be interviewed in Lagos.
Why though, Abuja is the only one that's still showing interview dates at all even though it's in November. Lagos interview dates are "barren", lol. Anyway I think as long as you haven't linked your visa fee payment to the DS-160 you already filled, should be able to start over. I'm not sure though.

ZionSpecie - I think the best way forward is to fill another DS-160 with the true information and on the interview date you can sincerely make reference to the earlier interview, that you used an agent and feel he had filled some information wrongly at that time and this time you had to fill it on your own with the true and accurate information. I might be wrong but looks like the way forward is to open up to them and show that utmost sincerity and hope for the best outcome.
I totally agree with this. The consular officer that did the Facebook live event a few weeks ago kept stressing that all he wants is honesty and sincerity- he's noticed a lot of visa applicants "overprepare" and emphasize things that he's not interested in (but they think he's interested in).

Guys, please am i suppose to request for a new I-20 from my school?
I got one in May this year for fall.
According to the guidelines from ICE, yes. You can email your school's international center to ask, although they might still be in "panic mode", and may not reply on time

As long as it can move it's a good development. If this can be modified for safety and mass produced, it'll quickly fix a lot of transportation problems, especially for those who can't afford traditional cars.

No. I'm not really sure I would have been interested since there is a slight chance these guys may not have even contained this stuff by then. The number of cases crossed 70,000 yesterday, a new peak. And I really wanna have enough time to explore other things like a new job or other opportunities.

Apart from that, there's also a possibility that the same courses won't be available in that quarter/semester. For example the courses I'm supposed to take this fall are only offered once a year, so deferring will mean waiting a whole year.

Since it’s a fellowship, you will get paid regardless of your location, so long as you’re registered and taking classes. No worries there... the only problem maybe whether you need a social security number in order to be paid.
I see! Thanks, this sounds encouraging. I was already starting to play out different worst case scenarios in my head. I emailed my supervisor but he hasn't replied yet and I know it's probably because the department is in panic mode right now, so I'll have to wait and see what he says. I don't have an SSN but I do have an TIN from when I lived in the US as a child. My dad was on a non immigrant work visa for quite some time. Do you think that can help?

This is really good news, I hope the Nigerian embassy and consulate follow suit. Now I have a question, since ICE asked schools to reissue new I-20s, do you think we can still apply with our current I-20s? Or is the I-20 really "beyond the embassy's jurisdiction" and they only need to see it as proof that you're a student (but not necessarily concerned with the fine print).

if you know Nigerians in Stanford. Talk to them, they'd have more knowledge with this.

Also, it's important you contact the fellowship and send them a carefully thought, emotionally appealing E-mail. If they agree, you can contact the Nigerians there if it's possible they receive the check on your behalf and send it to your account through Sendwave app since you have no US account yet.

Nothing is certain so you have to take your chances. They might even agree to go through the stress of paying it directly to you.
Thanks. Also, I've never heard of sendwave before, I'll look it up. Thanks again!

I saw #8750 for 42GB Glo. That's an average of 1.4GB per day.
- I won't be receiving classes everyday
- I intend to use my phone for zoom which would minimize data instead of if I'm using laptop
- My classes are 1 or 2 a day, rarely 3.

So I think it'll be enough or if more than that, small.
Nice, I didn't know about the Glo plan. The unfortunate thing is that Glo network is horrible where I am.
Travel / Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by greenskittles: 7:05am On Jul 10, 2020
I'll eventually have to ask my supervisor himself but I'd like to hear opinions please. I was admitted for a masters with a fellowship, including both tuition and living expenses. During my interview my supervisor made it clear, he wants "no work" for me for my first three quarters so I can focus on studying, and then contingent on my performance, I'll join him in research as an RA for my second year.

Now with these new rules and all, if I have to take classes in Nigeria do you think it's possible I get paid my fellowship stipend here? Since if I was in the US I wouldn't have to work either. I browsed through the department website and apparently cheques are paid to the address listed in my student portal every two weeks (if I was in the US). The only available fact I have now is that the President of the University assured all students who've been offered financial aid in any form that the University will honor their promises in spite of COVID-19. But there's no assurance of that with deferring and they'd have to check with the specific office that offered them aid if they defer.

So my question, has anybody here ever had this happen to them before? Or at least were in Nigeria receiving remote payment for work? What do I need to do to successfully receive the money *if* this is possible?

I really don't want to defer because I'm in it for the long haul, I expect to be at this school for the next 5 years because I'm pursuing a PhD, and would like to get the coursework out of the way as soon as possible. So I really want to know if I could get paid, because studying without any income is not possible for me, I'd have to get a job which would mean deferring.

I have to. To keep my full scholarship.
I'm doing my calculations now.
#10,000/month for data max.
#10,000/month for fuel max.
The time zone though.
N10k for data probably won't even cut it, I've been taking so many online courses (personal development) since the lockdown started and I've needed more than that. The cheapest you can get with N10k in Nigeria is 40GB as far as I know. Honestly having to study in Nigeria will be a real pain.

Did you contact any faculty member before?

I don't have them anymore but if you do a Google search you should be able to find them, they're everywhere.

Yes I did, in some other schools, but I found that all the professors that interviewed me were people I didn't contact beforehand. It's different for everyone though.

I get your point. But one thing I know is that one can still use a stone to kill many birds. You can get into US,
have a plan B from day one on ways to get into other countries and still get your US degree. People are doing it. Canada and UK for example have other immigration pathways that isn't student Visa. For example, UK has a route for PhD holders. I heard of someone that got into US to study MSc Systems Engineering on full funding and still found his way into Canada post graduation to work as a Data Scientist. The guy even turned down a PhD offer from his US school. Truth is US is a land of opportunities, though, it is unfortunate that they don't want us. Someone that graduated with a 2.2 here still has the chance to get into a reasonable school, study for free or almost free at worst, by just strengthening other part of their application package. The country practically gives you hope of a standard reasonably priced education.
Honestly, this is what I'm thinking about right now. I just have to keep reminding myself that all this uncertainty surrounding my life right now is one of the consequences of me trying to seek a better life for myself and my children if I eventually get married.

@Greenskittles
How good was that website you shared for grading Gre-essays? Was it very close to what you actually polled in your real test?
On the website I consistently scored around 4.2 and 5.3 and in the real test I got 4.5, so I'll say it's decently accurate. But note that it's just a rough approximation, because it scored the official ETS 6.0 essay (the one the textbook) a measly 4.5 or so when I tried it.

I just think it's a decent tool to have, since the real test is scored by a combination of a software and human graders. So you can just use this one to learn how to "game" the Natural Language Processing algorithm.

Yeah!
None of those schools are safeties. Penn is need aware for International students.

Hi! I tagged you earlier on. Please, what books did you use for your GRE prep? Any tips? Did you submit your final year project? What do you think made you stand out to Stanford?

Quantitative:
Manhattan subject books
Manhattan 5lb book

Verbal:
Magoosh Videos
Magoosh PDF book
gregmat (YouTube) videos
Magoosh vocabulary builder app (free on play and appstores)
Barron's essential GRE words
I also read articles on theeconomist.com everyday to get used to reading 'complex' passages. (Not all the articles are about economics, lol).

Writing:
gregmat videos
https://www.mbacrystalball.com/gre/gre-essay-grader (free automatic grading software to practice since both a computer and human grades the real thing)

I think a combination of all the factors in my profile and the impression I made on my PI during the interview are what helped. In the Stanford application, apart from everything I listed there I also had to write like three more short "essays" that gave an insight into who I am. So apart from Stanford being a "big name" I'm happy I'm going there because they actually tried to get to know me as a person.

Northwestern isn't a safety school by any means but it's worth a shot to apply there. It's just a tier below the ivies and its students act like it's an ivy, lol. It's also pretty expensive but they have robust funding for PhDs (I'm guessing they should for undergrad too).

Same website, ustraveledocs. I chose Abuja though but I still couldn’t get a date and I know peeps here got a date in Abuja. When you log in to the system, it says “November 4th” as the earliest available date but I don’t know why I couldn’t pick it. I wouldn’t know if the fault is from the system or at the point I submitted no date was available.

Sometimes I wonder why, of all the bright minds in this country, people are always faced with two horrible candidates in every election. I simply cannot believe that these two are the very best to come out of Edo. But then again, the same thing is happening in the US. Of all the people to choose from it's Biden v Trump. Lol.
