Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it. TWoods: All the information you need is available online... not sure why Nigerians pretend that its some specialized knowledge known only to a sacred few.
The speed at which you get a green card after your PhD depends on you and your employer.
1. First step... finish your phd and worry less about a green card. It isn't difficult for a Nigerian at all. 2. After your phd, get your OPT, your school's office of international students should help you with this and any questions you have regarding the process. 3. Get a job, make sure your employer understands that you intend to apply for a GC. Note, the GC process (via employment) is your employers. You don't apply on your own (well unless you're going through the National Interest Waiver process - which is more challenging). 4. Once you get a job, your employer will apply for an H1B on your behalf. The H1B gives you more breathing space for 3-6 years, during which time you should be applying for your GC. 5. Your employer basically takes care of the rest. The process is divided into 2 - the I-140 and I-485 stages. The I-140 stage depends on whether you have enough experience and qualifications to apply for EB1 or EB2 (you can do EB3 but this is not really for you since you have a phd). The EB1 route is far easier but the EB2 route is also ok so long as your employer is willing to put in the effort. - it requires an intermediate Perm step by the Department of Labor. 6. Once your I-140 is approved (should take about 1 year), you're basically close to the finish line. 7, Apply for your I-485, barring any backlogs at the USCIS, this is usually a 1-year process and should be more of a formality. After this is approved, you should get your GC in the mail in a few weeks. Your family is automatically part of your application so they get GCs too. Chances are you and your family may need to sit for an interview but this is relatively simple.
8. And this is the most important part - DO NOT take public support (e.g. medicaid) or break the law, both will affect you at your I-485 stage. Do not drink and drive... a DUI automatically revokes your visa and you have to come back to Nigeria to take care of it.
Overall from start to finish, you're looking at 3 years depending on your employer.
It's an easy process... spend more time making the best of your phd and good luck. |

To be candid, Google took me to Quora when I googled the question yesterday. I believe that background/origin is one of the biggest factors in this kind of issue because the way Nigerian applications will be treated is gonna different from that of Europeans or some Asians. I just want to hear from Nigerian(s) or someone that know Nigerian(s) that has passed through the process in the past or going throught it presently. Friedpotato: Hello bro, I think the best place to go ask this question is on Quora. You'd see lot of real life explanations from hundreds of people that have gone through the process. You'd get better advice there that anyone you'd get on Nairaland. |

I have been reading your comments for soemtime, I must say you are doing a great job as well sir. Kindly help me to shed more light to these questions... How long can it take generally to get a green card in case I finish my PHD in USA? And do you know how difficult it is to get the card as a Nigerian? BTW, I am planning to move to US with my family. i will apreciate your reply sir. If you dont mind, I can send you a PM as well because of my confidential details. Thank you sir! fairheart: You have been enveloped by your dream, but tip the flap and try to look outside so you can see your realities. Having a dream is not really hard, paying the price is. In my 20s, I learnt that if you want to help anyone who want to pursue their dreams, ask them what they have committed first. You know, what have they done for themself towards this dream? I can support one way or the other, but how far have you gone in supporting yourself to achieve this dream? Let me guess you're from the grassroots. Life is very, very hard for youths who have beautiful dreams from this social class. But you have to look at the realities, so that you will be guided and not miss out.
Now, read this carefully. Getting admissions in the US entails many things: morale, consistent finance, academic soundness, focus to finish what you start. The financial aspect is the reality I want you step out of your dream to assess. As an undergraduate student, you have to apply to 2-3 schools at least, especially since you need full-ride scholarship and you don't have 100% assurance that if you apply to only one school, it will offer you that. Hence, 2-3 school is the best.
We'll use $/N400 for the calculation below. Let us say each school application fee cost $40 X 3= $120 (N48, 000). SAT=N50, 000 Let us assume you manage resources and apply to schools that only ask for WAEC scratch card for admission. So, no WES or ECE. Let us assume admission then came for fall 2021. SEVIS FEE = $350 (N140, 000); Visa fee =N70, 000 (God forbid that you're refused once, you will need another visa fee). Let us say you need flight ticket in the fall, which would cost approximately N300K to 350K. TOTAL: N608, 000
That's more than half of a million Naira. This is the reality I want you to partially remove the veil of your dream to see. My dear, how do you plan to raise this money? How much can we give to support you from here? If you need moral and professional support, from the scratch to the end, I'm in for you. I will even try to support you with application fee, and get you people you can stay with in the States if your school is around them, for free. If someone here help you with 50K SAT fee, how will you get the 558K to run this race successfully? If I were your mentor, these are the questions I'd ask you.
Now, sit down quietly and think. What can you do? How much can you raise? Who can you ask to help? Anybody in the family? If none, as that may be the reason you come here to ask for support, please focus on studying in Nigeria.
Nigeria is a wicked country and its entire system has been made hostile and shaped by difficult hands against children of the poor at the grassroots. It is what it is! But you have to fight for your dreams anyway. How you fight for this dream is now left for you to device... You can study in the US, but it seems the best time for that is not now. Maybe Master's is ideal. Got your request for DM. We will talk better. |

Hi bro, Do you know how long it can take to get green card in case I finish my PHD in USA? And do you know how difficult it is to get the card as a Nigerian? BTW, I am planning to move to US with my family Friedpotato: Yes yes yes we know the advantages of studying in the US that is why we are here in the first place.
Personally from my experience. I would say don't give up. Take the SAT first. The person that advises you above, advised you according to his experience. Not to contradict all the truth he said but i've seen a different experience. I know people that had nothing but got full ride. One got into Minerva with 70k+/year scholarship and Minerva called the US embassy to put him on the opportunity funds program after the deadline of application has passed. One got full ride to Franklin and Marshall, another to Rochester, another to Fisk.
Anything can happen, Just take the SAT first. If you get a full ride, good. If you don't get, then you'd continue here. |

Thank you for your detailed response sir. I have read some of your posts here as well on this tread and I must say you are doing a great job. Can I send you a PM sir? Admitwithschola: If you give more details about yourself, you could get sharp answers that will address your questions. Are you a man (>35 and especially >40) or you're a guy (<35)? What's your educational record and work experience like? Are you an academic in Naija? Which field are you into? And which field do you hope to do this PhD? Do you have research experience? Papers in decent places? Finally, do you have profs who are willing to write you the type of letter that I just finished writing for a student? . A letter that will make oyinbo beg you to come their country?
To your question, green card is doable. I got my first approval after like one year of grad school. But one thing though - provided the government does not change status quo that much and if you;re self-petitioning, you would need a decent job with decent pay and a good research record. This is just one way. There are several ways/categories, and I would encourage you to do some google searches. it's all on the internet.
To summarize, it's relatively easier (not easy though) to get the green card via one of the categories if one i) has an advanced degree ii) has a nice job iii) has research papers (sometimes with citations) and iv) has the grace of God. In fact, people get US green card from outside the US. I have a colleague in South Africa who will be applying and getting the US green card there in SA. This person seeks the green card so they can enter and leave for life. Academic jobs in SA are very lucrative, at least at the professor cadre level, so this person does not plan to "ja komot" from SA, but they are open to opportunities nonetheless.
I hope this helps you. Meanwhile, if an academic institution hires you as assistant professor after your PhD, then you will get a green card. This is because many of them initiate the process of your green card application immediately you join them. In most cases, you join them with an H1b, which they obtained for you (no cap for academic people for H1B), and then they file green card for you once you are hired. The sad thing is just that academic jobs are hard to get in the US, but it becomes easier either if you i) attended a strong program or ii) do a path-breaking research which your advisor does a good job "shouting" about. I don't want to give specific examples of people, so that I don't out myself. This is an anonymous site, no be so? Lol
All the bestest, Sir. |

You are a true Nigerian indeed. Thank you on behalf of OP for spitting it out. OP, I take God beg you, since you said you are looking for money and there is a chance to even increase your income, just drop the idea of moving to Canada. Most people advising you to leave Nigeria for Canada because of standard of living are all right, but regarding money-making, believe me, you will regret it if you leave for Western world. My friend was fined 350 USD for overspeeding last year and he recieved another ticket for driving too slow at a cost of 155 USD. Dont even let me start talking about bills payment right now. Its hard to save 500 USD in a month overthere. Just stay put in Naija as you are one of the few fortunate Nigerians that are doing well for themselves. With money, you can raise your standard of living to any extent that you want and send your unborn kids to one of the best primary and secondary schools in Nigeria. TrueNigerian300: Oga, Oga, Oga.... How many times did I call you ?Smh!!! On a more serious note I like the fact that you are sincere with yourself; that what you are looking for is more money. Now just to be cleared with you it is easier to make money in Nigeria than any of the so called developed countries Canada included. The only thing that is hard like hell in Nigeria is to break even and for someone earning 800k a month with potential of earning more has definitely broken even in Nigeria. You are in the top 10% and you can live like a king in your own little way with that money.Nigeria being a lawlessness country only favour the rich and getting richer too is really easy i like said compared to the western world.
Now just so you know you are equivalent to someone in the top 20% in Canada when looking at Purchasing Power Parity(PPP) don't be fooled by the exchange rate. You have what can be considered a very good job anywhere in the world in the Nigeria context. Just so you know there is no where in the world where it is easy to get this kind of job that you have. Less than 15% of any nation have such job - again I am not talking exchange rate here but standard by each country and never be fooled by the exchange rate. Over 40% of Americans can't cover $400 emergency expense. That tells you how hard it is to make money in the developed world. I can authoritatively tell you that you live a better live than 90% of Nigerians that live in the so called developed countries. Most of them are struggling they live in cubicles just to send money home to have what you can easy get right now with your salary.
Finally, ask yourself a question why do all Nigerian billionaires or almost all of them live in Nigeria? The richest Nigerians live in Nigeria and it is for one reason it is the best place to live if you have money and the worst place to live if you are poor. Only poor Nigerians or average Nigerians are obsessed with abroad. The rich ones know whatsup and they are aware that they are better off with their money living in Nigeria.
So since you are looking for money just stay in Nigeria and if you must leave make sure you get a very good offer before leaving Nigeria. Don't go to Canada and start struggling for the kind of job of you have in Nigeria. The chance that you will get that kind of job in Canada is 0.1 except you are in the IT or some highly demanding fields. Enjoy your large life style in Nigeria don't go and start living in cubicles in Canada. That is stupidity if you ask me.

Hmmmn. I can understand all your points that you stated. But why some people will call for our heads when we say Buhari is a disaster seems beyond me. I wish you all the best and happiness! livebyday: Well these are very good questions and I will respond accordingly
1. I have worked in Nigeria in good companies and always earned well . But over the years I have also been privileged to travel and experience life outside and to be honest what Nigerians live in Nigeria is not real.life in as much as on would want to delude oneself nothing is working . Nigeria can't even fix roads properly every other year every politician comes in and makes a show of fixing roads, education is dead and detoriated to the extent that employees favor graduates from convenant uni over our great federal universities
2. I have seen the value of the naira slip badly , what one could so with a salary of 700 - 900 two years ago you can't do it anymore , the economy is about to go bankrupt like HRH the emir of Kano has wanted and when that happens the naira will be floated meaning exchange rate would be $1 to N4000 or more , what will be the price of things then ?
3. The government is not focused despite my respect for his Excellency buhari , I am.exteemely disappointed. He has focused on less important things like ruga instead of fixing the corruption that's crippled his government in the first four years ! Yes devuani stole.money but that shouldn't be the excuse why we have thieves and corrupt people looting us dry since 2015 . Education is dead hence why his daughters all.scholl abroad , security is zero hence why all his kids live abroad , how do I have faith in buhari to fix the health sector when he traveled abroad for a flu vaccine whenever he is sick?
4. The at things are going Nigeria will.get worse next four years , I can't see one thing that indicates it's going to get better all I see is misguided comments, actions and confusion
5. Since 2015 I have had friends whom all relocated , i.mean couples whose monthly parking combined revenue was over 3 million then I laughed at them , they know I am a staunch Pro Buhari and Patriot but trully the life they live there is much better now . They were paying incredibly expensive fees for their kids to get good education in British International and Atlantic hall in Nigeria but now their kids get better education at almost nothing there , they spend far far less on feeding , better security, you see what you tax does so why won't you be happy? Let's not even talk of health care .
6. The security situation in Nigeria is maddening and frightening.. it will get worse as the economy dies further
7. Like I said made the decision and left a year ago, I have a job there now and a resident permit , I have a home, in an economy where people are serious, where life works , where I get to the hospital and they don't ask for funds before attending to a human being , where's the police are professional. Racism is less worrisome to.me.after having dealt with TRIBALISM as a Nigerian
I pray all those who can.leave Nigeria do so because sadly I have lost faith in Buhari as Painful as it is .
So now I returned to Nigeria and I have sold off my remaining things in Abuja and Lagos
Will be leaving Nigeria permanently by next weekend, I will.never look back again , the uncertainty here is distracting
Life isn't meant to be lived this way I see that now
As regards your other question now I am not married yet , truth be told almost all my friends have relocated from Nigeria with their kids
Only about two are left here and they are planning to relocate
I will still be active here , to at least know when Nigeria finally elects a leader who has an idea how to fix the nation
Cheers |

You are absolutely right on the bolded. I must say that with a very good skills in IT, there are more opportunities in those places including Estonia. Majority of guys in Estonia are working as a customer service agents in a place like TransferWise, Arvato, and etc. But the point is that, if you really wanna gather reasonable amount of money over short period of time, Estonia is not the best. However, some people cant just do those dirty jobs no matter how much they will get monthly. chaiks: I never doubt language barrier.but on Estonia, a lot of people speak English. Language barrier is even a more bigger problem in Finland and Norway than Estonia. |

Mind you alot.of fraudsters will.rell.you to stay back.then send you DMs of.so called sure mouth watering investment opportunities please ignore them
Yes I have seen friends.who.where graduates and.working here in an office working as mall security men abroad but what the first commenter doesn't.know is the life style.and quality of life a mall security man or woman would.live in America in ten times better than what you can do in Nigeria working for mtn
Nigeria is not seeming to get anywhere and while.i remain optimistic Ifor Nigeria I will not put my life at risk by remaining there..
Any moment looking at this ruga thing a crisis can eruot and then the borders and airports will be shut due to a refugee crisis
My friend get out while.you can. Nigeria.. I will be praying for Nigeria but I am currently in Nigeria to sell off the remainder of what I own and to be honest by the ,21st of the month I would have left Nigeria permanently and will never return
So whom am I to tell you other wise , though I already have a job and residence permit but my.ooknt is you are better off out there trying to make something of yourself , remember once you stabilize bring your family out there escape Nigeria

Op, go and read my posts on moving to.Europe. Language barrier is a big issue but most of these places are far better than Nigeria. Be wise. If you are less than 30 yrs with 3 or more years of working experience, give Canada Express entry program a try. You can also check Australia Immigration program. chaiks: Since you have a bachelor degree in, study route will be the best. Calm down, apply for admission in Norway, Finland and Germany. If you get admitted, your 4m will help you get visa without tuition. By the time you finish after two years, you must have realized a lot from part time work, get a higher degree and international exposure. If u go into business, you might regret. |
