OP is right.

In 1976, N 200 was a lot of money then. I remember my friend bought a used Peugeot 404 for N 500 in 1979 and I bought £ 10 British Postal Order at the Marina Post Office for N 18 (inclusive of poundage) in 1980.

My first salary in 1983 as a graduate was N 350 per month. It was big money then. From Tinubu to Palmgrove, a taxi fare was N 2, four people would share and pay 50 kobo each.

Return ticket (economy) to London in late 1983 was N 380. No visa was required, you'll be given entry permit in London.
Baba I hail o, at 41 I thought am one of the oldest here but here you are talking of 1983 when I was in primary 3, good to see matured mind giving their contribution this forum

This is a lie Nigeria doesn't use pounds in 1976, Naira came into use on January 1, 1973

Business › Re: Nigeria's Inflation Declines To 17.78% by HAH:
This is the reason why the CBN must continue the fight against the dollar mafia and bring up the Value of the naira because everything is dependent on the dollar value, now that the naira has got some value back you can see inflation has reduced.

The enemies of Nigeria are those saying the CBN policy is not sustainable or temporary, well as long as income from oil export increases this policy is sustainable, expecially with peace in the Niger delta, some are even saying we are depleting our reserves, the last time I checked the reserve increased in value.

It only a wicked father that will keep money in bank while his family is suffering in the same vein Nigeria Via CBN must save the naira, every nation defends it currency those saying we should float the naira don't even know what they are saying, floating your currency is like opening your border for everything and everyone to enter without checks. Hoarders of the dollar will surely lose money and will regret, Nigeria economy will bounce back

The senate should threaten the president with repealing the law that created the customs itself, then Buhari will know they are serious, it is only because of Buhari closeness that this Hameed Ali is being stubborn to the senate.

The senate is an institution that must be respected by all including the president talkless of one man with military mentality towing with it

I hate ponzi schemes and I hate cheats, the Nigeria stock market is also a ponzi scheme backed by law my reason is below :

Stock borkers will tell you how good a stock is and lure people to shore up it price since demand goes up now when the price reach a certain price the stock companies sell their holdings at this point supply will be more than demand thereby causing price crash to some extend some people are left with worthless papers called share certificate.

The above scenario played out in Nigeria betweeen 2006 and 2009, I personally lost about 15M, just imagine if I invested on a landed property by now atleast I will still have my land with its value but as it is the share are not worth more than 1M, I bought, afribank, bankphb, oceanic, ibplc, etc

If all people are like me now, stock brokers will go broke cos the stock market is another ponzi scheme backed by law, I would rather take the destiny of my money into my hands and invest it on landed property or a partnership business that I have a say in and can see when thing are getting bad

Abeg stop spreading ignorance. The permanent secretary of any ministry is a Career civil servant. Appointments on Contract basis is due when the person must have retired and left the service. And he or she is called back to serve in a ministry or government parastatal. And No, you cannot appoint someone already retired as the permanent secretary of a ministry. Other capacity yes. But no PS.
Iam too old to stoop low to call you ignorant as you called me but I want to let you know that civil service career end at level 17 which is director, and appointment of perm sect is political and at the prerogative of the president

So what you saying is that no qualified personnel in that ministry to appoint as perm sec?
What if the woman drops dead today, will the ministry cease to function?
She's the only one with enough experience to run the place? So how will others who are being denied get this so called experience this woman was born with?
Let's call a spade a spade o jare
of course no one is indispensable but what I want you to know is that the prerogative of appointment of perm sects is with the president
Politics › Re: Buhari's Extension Of Jamila Shu’ara As Permanent Sec. Twice Causes Controversy by HAH: 11:13am On Mar 13, 2017
oloriooko:
A perm sec should be an active civil servant who is trained for that post. Denying an active civil servant such opportunity will generate a ripple effect in the civil service and extending a retired personnel tenure is preposterous and suggestive of incompetence among the serving workers
you are right that is why perm sect are always civil servant with experience and that is why no president appointed a business man as perm sect because the experience is needed but the prerogative of appointment is with him hence the appointment of a retired perm sect to continue on contract basis
Politics › Re: Buhari's Extension Of Jamila Shu’ara As Permanent Sec. Twice Causes Controversy by HAH: 11:00am On Mar 13, 2017
oloriooko:
You are wrong sir.
Perm sec seat is not political it's for career civil servants but politicians have turned it to position they can influence directly.
The effect of this irregular decision is deep as civil servants promotion can be stagnated and some will go into retirement without attaining desired position.
PMB has refused to play by the rules and this is quite unfortunate
please sir, can you tell me what grade level are perm sects, I believe non because they are political appointees among civil servant, for decorum they are always appointed among civil servants since they are under the employment of the government, but the president can pick someone retired already and appoint him as perm sect or head of service Base on contract

Check very well every civil servants careers end at level 17 which is a director, it is the prerogative of the president to decide if they will be perm sect
Politics › Re: Buhari's Extension Of Jamila Shu’ara As Permanent Sec. Twice Causes Controversy by HAH: 9:17am On Mar 13, 2017
Permanent secretary position is a political appointment and the president has the power to appoint anyone.

For those who don't know the president has power to give position on contract to those who have reached retirement age or years of service

Borno can never be the same again, some village are gone forever, some IDP will never return to their villages.

Maiduguri as it is is over populated due to influx of people from the entire northern and central Borno only southern part town like Biu, hawul, bayo, kwaya, and shani have its people intact.

The IDP that moved to maiduguri are better rehabilitated and get their children to schools and youth get to work if not there will another set of social problem brewing, cos most of this village dwellers that are used to only dawa and kuka have moved to maiiduguri eating rice, yam pasta etc can never go back to their former lives, most of them are spoon fed they have not worked for almost 5 years and laziness may creep in.

After the military war there will be social war with menaces to the society due to war

I proposely add it to it becos he roof everything together @ that time..
ok but still your dad must have spent more than 35k for the entire building cos my dad build a house then and it consumed over200k, though depending on house type, 1992 was not as fantastic as being painted e don Tey wey Nigeria spoil o

by the way I was in SS2 in 1992
Properties › Re: See The Amount My Dad Used To Roof His Building (25yrs Ago) by HAH: 8:47pm On Mar 11, 2017
Believe or not time then we're harder than now, salaries were meagre in 1992 my elder brother got work as a graduate his salary was,N900 monthly, so to get 35k as your dad spent he has to work for almost 3 years., the rate of inflation under IBB was terrible it can only be compared to Nigeria of recent

By the way your dad's budget from the material bought and quantity is certainly not for full house cos 300 blocks cannot build a house at best a room and verandah

I think speculators should actually buy up the excess dollars depending on their capital base. It's similar to the stock market, when people are in panic selling, a wise investor would caefully buy. Fact is it all works in a similar manner: Ponzi's, Stocks, Investments and Forex. Emotions carry a lot of weight especially one like Nigeria.

To be honest, i really don't expect the cuts suggested by opec to be maintained for the long haul as it'll affect the larger OPEC producing countries more than the latter.
I once believed in the notion that says buy stocks when everyone is selling until I was badly burned.

In 2009 when everyone was selling shares I bought some shares notably among oceanic, bankphb and afribank of abou( 15M believe me I lost 90% of my investment till today left with only regrets, I now personally see the stock market as a ponzi scheme but back by law, where brokers will lure you to buy the share to shore up price then sell off and everything comes crashing, my friend that bought 2 house in 2009 with 15M in lokogoma abuja now collects 1.5m rent annually and the houses have appreciated by over 100%,. All I have is regrets only and have move on
Car Talk › Re: Nigeria Customs Releases Update Of Grace Period For Auto Duty Payment by HAH: 8:10am On Mar 11, 2017
saintjoel:
If I may quote you sir/ma, the server is configured to recognise what we call a C-number ( customs reference number) . Customs use the last six digits when entering your details into the server and so many cars can have the same last six digits (Pls note that entering seventeen digits can be cumbersome when you've hundreds of vehicles awaiting entry) , that was why the c-number was introduced.

It's just like when you purchase a recharge card and you've mistakenly scratched out two OR three recharge digits from the card. The Customer Care will only refund you when you quote your serial number because that is what will differentiate your card from another card. The same way the custom server is also built.

About the website, even we as agents don't have access to the website because their website and the server is inter-connected, the server can only be opened by an officer called the T.S ,even low ranking officers in the same office with him can't assess the server if he hasnt logged in. If the server is made public, there are fears that it may be hacked, which may disrupt services throughout every land border, airports, sea ports, banks etc and it may take days/weeks to rectify.

The one month programme from what we presume is just a step in opening land borders and also syncing the NCS with other agencies like the FRSC, VIO etc like it is in some countries. Let's assume your car is stolen and you've a system that is synced, after you make a report to the police, police can make reports to all other agencies and the immediately print your details in their respective offices because you've been captured in the system, the can also start a search for the car immediately. That will prevent cross border theft, I've a personal experience about this issue and by the type we could track the car, it was already on its way across the border. It will also enable customs know the routes smugglers use for smuggling and the officers involved, if you want to get a plate number for a smuggled car, FRSC will arrest you and hand you over to customs, customs will investigate and get all the officers on the route you used arrested and they'll face the law.

There are other things to be gained in the synergy but it can't be achieved if all vehicles present in the country aren't captured in the database.

***/// KINDLY NOTE THAT ALL IVE STATED ARE JUST MY OPINION AS AN AGENT, ANYONE CAN HAVE CONTRARY OPINIONS WHICH ARE WELCOME, THANKS AND I HOPE YOU'LL HAVE A HAPPY AND BLESSED WEEKEND.
Thank you the detailed explanation, however I still believe the website should be configured to accept VIN in full and also make it hack proof like banks website, so that people can sit in their home and verify their cars without any hazzles.

By the way how do you confirm the duty of a car bought brand new from companies like elizad, PAN or coscharis, cos the last time we bought cars no duty papers was given to us only receipts

C-Number

There is a C-Number on your customs paper. Copy it out and take it to the nearest Customs office and have it checked.

They charge you about 3k for it though, to verify if the duty is genuine or not.
What should be my business with import duty papers or any c number, the vin number should be OK for any verification, no two cars have same vin so why confuse people with another number.

This 3k you mentioned is an extortion and should be fought, there should be a website where everyone can verify his duty payment via his vin free of charge
Car Talk › Re: Nigeria Customs Releases Update Of Grace Period For Auto Duty Payment by HAH:
In this age and time of Internet they want people to go to their offices to pay, how would an innocent car owner know if his car has a fake duty, a car he probably bought 7 years ago and was given a duty paper which he used to register his vehicle without any complain,

I think the custom and government in general are transferring their failure and inefficiency to people, the policy should have been no authentic duty no car registration, a website should also be created where car owners will simply just use their VIN to confirm if duty has been paid on his car but as it is they want the entire country car owners to troop to their offices to check if duty has been paid first then if not paid pay, this are bottlenecks deliberately created as an avenue for corruption cos certainly some people will collect money just to check validity of duty.

Hameed Ali is daring Nigerian, he will surely see the wrath of our collective will, the guy is so arrogant. And pompous that he doesn't wear customs uniform, he was just a Lt Col in the army an equivalent of level 13 civil servant and not a senior officer, we have seen a retired general Haladu Hannaiya who was appointed head of frsc and he wore their uniform, can you imagine Hameed Ali doesn't report to the minister of finance as required by law but he by passes her to report to Buhari, this is wrong he isn't above the law and must be called to order.

LordBaelish:
You have a point. As for me, now's the time to pay for all foreign expenditures i've kept on hold since.
that's the spirit , the government as you pointed out earlier want to prove a point and as long as oil sells above $50 they can sustain the momentum, and projection say oil can be up to $60 per barrel before the end of the year especially if the opec cuts are sustained.

Wise speculators should sell their holdings because as it is they will only lose, according to some analyst the real value of the naira is around 380-400, the current 450-460 is even high, there is a currency war going on and many hoarders are out there, like of the former gmd nnpc Andrew Yakubu that was caught with $9.7M.

So my brother I like this discourse because we learn from each other, cheers

Bros, this method is just to make people feel good and score political points. Fair play to him though..
If you sell garri and you earn dollars do you just leave everything in your dorm account waiting, you will leave some in the account and change some into naira to use for your family, this is what the government is doing, they are not using anything earned some are saved in the reserves that is why the reserve is now over $30B.
Business › Re: CBN Injects Another $100 Million Into Forex Market by HAH: 12:47pm On Mar 10, 2017

My analogy still applies. It's not free dollars but still something goes for something. Depleting reserves might be a decent option especially during Dollar peak periods(Which we aren't in) but it's a stop-gap at best, it's not a long or medium term solution.
Not everything earned goes into the reserves, some of the dollars earning needs to changed to naira to run the country, this exchanges is what is term pumping of dollars, it has increased because our dollar earning has increased due crude price increase
