Gunmen slaughter 3 children of SSS officer •In their mother’s presence •4 killed in Kano riot •10 others killed in Borno, Plateau Boko Haram sect ELEVEN persons, including three children of the same parents were yesterday killed by suspected members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, at Suleimanti and Lawan wards of Maiduguri. The father of the three children is said to be a State Security Service officer. A resident of Sulemanti ward, Audu Jubril told our correspondent that, they started hearing gunshots at about 2:00 a.m. in the area, only to come out of their houses in the morning and be greeted with the news of the killing of little children by suspected sect members. “They burnt down the house of a retired nurse and killed three children of another man. The situation really calls for serious intervention in Suleimanti because this is not the first time something like this is happening in Suleimanti ward. We have complained several times, we need JTF around this area so that they will chase out these boys carrying guns. Gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram have killed seven persons in Lawan Bukar ward of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital. Residents of the area said that, the gunmen attacked the residents between 7:45 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Thursday following allegations that the residents earlier arrested two members of the sect, which they handed over to the Joint Task Force Operation Restore Order, when they attacked some residents in the area. “When the residents caught these boys and handed them over, we were told that they were killed by JTF that is why some of their friends went and organized themselves and came to attack the area this morning,” a resident told Nigerian Tribune. Men of the JTF have since been drafted to Suleimanti and Lawan Bukar area, but when contacted for confirmation the JTF spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa told our correspondent on phone that, he will send a release to the effect. Residents of Suleimanti and Lawan Bukar wards of Maiduguri, the Borno state capital have described the killing of the 11 persons as unholy, wicked and barbaric. A resident of suleimanti ward, Audu Jibril, told Nigerian Tribune that, it is unimaginable that in this era of civilization some people who claimed to be doing the will of Allah go round killing people simply because they belong to another faith. “The killing of innocent children between the ages of four, seven and twelve in a manner, which for whatever reason are inhuman and barbaric,” he stated. As people in both Barakin-Ladi and Riyom local government areas of Plateau State continue to live in fear, occasioned by frequent attacks by some unknown gunmen, three people were killed in both areas on Wednesday. Nigerian Tribune learnt that some assailants at about 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday waylaid some natives along Sho village in Barakin-Ladi local government and shot two of them dead while others fled into the bush just as the gunmen also disappeared immediately after carrying out the act. It was equally gathered that a similar incident occurred at Rankebot village in the neighbouring Riyom local government at about 5:30 p.m. where a farmer working on his farm was shot at close range and he died before getting to the hospital. The Media/Information Officer of the Special Task Force in charge of security in the state, Captain Salisu Mustapha, who confirmed the two incidents to Nigerian Tribune said two suspects have been arrested, adding that the command has also commenced full investigation into the two incidents. It is recalled that some groups of notorious gunmen in Barakin-Ladi local government area of Plateau State on Monday night opened fire on some cows, killing 12 on the spot and wounded another 12. According to a statement issued by the Special Task Force in charge of security in the state signed by the Media/Information officer of the Force, Captain Salisu Mustapha, Commander of the STF, Major General Henry Ayoola as a result of this summoned an emergency meeting with the Chairmen of Barakin Ladi and his Jos south counterpart along with tradition rulers in the area with the aim of preventing the incident from escalating. Two more people were again on Thursday, confirmed dead, bringing the death toll to nine, while 50 houses have been burnt in the communal clash that engulfed Agyaragu community in Obi local government area of Nasarawa State, on Wednesday. The district head of Gidan-Rai, Zhe Meri, who was a displaced person at Agyaragu before the hostility, as a result a the similar crisis that visited his domain few weeks ago, escaped by the whiskers, shortly before the crisis. The Administrator of Jenkwe Development Area, Mr Wuduyamba Sam Agidi, who led the state Deputy Governor, Honourable Dameshi Luka Barau and other top security chiefs in the state on an assessment tour of the troubled area, confirmed the casualty figure to the Nigerian Tribune. The palace of the paramount ruler in the area, ‘Zhe Migili’, Dr Ayuba Agwadu, was razed by the people alleged to be militant Ombatse, while the paramount ruler escaped unhurt. As of the time of filing this report, smoke was still bellowing from some of the affected building, as charred remains of some victims littered the area. While speaking with newsmen shortly after the assessment, the Deputy governor, Honourable Dameshi described it as barbaric, given the level of devastation of the crisis. “From the briefing we have got so far from the administrator and security, one cannot really ascertain the real cause of the crisis for now, but I can assure you that we would get to the root of the matter. “We have taken stock of what has happened and immediately we return to Lafia, we are going into a security meeting to review the situation and come up with a firm decision on the next line of action to checkmate the escalation of the situation,” he added. As of the time of filing this report, women and children were seen being evacuated in vans from the area for fear of being attacked. The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Abayomi Akeremale, Director, State Security Service (SSS), Mr Abubakar Bubuche and Secretary to the State Government (SSS), Honourable Hamza Elayo and other government functionaries, with heavy presence of security operatives were part of the tour. Meanwhile, heavy security operatives have been deployed to Bichi town, a kilometers of about 50 to the ancient city of Kano, over a crisis which erupted on Thursday over allegation of blasphemy of Prophet Mohammed’s name by a tailor who resided in the town, just as a source said unconfirmed number of shops, religious houses were set ablaze during the pandemonium while no fewer than four lives were lost. This is just as the state police command restated the ban on okada from 6.00 p.m to 6.00 a.m, saying it had been discovered that motorbikes had been used to perpetrate the incessant killing of innocent people in the state. Speaking with newsmen in Kano, on Thursday, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris, however, disclosed that normalcy had returned to the town, though security operatives, police and soldiers were still in the town to maintain law and order. He said the tailor alleged to have uttered the blasphemy statement had been rescued and taken to a safer place. “We have held meetings with religious and traditional leaders as well as with stakeholders in the town to speak to people on the need to allow peace to reign,” he said. While speaking with journalists, the police boss stated that the incessant use of motorcycles to attack innocent citizens in the state had made it necessary for the state security council to convene a meeting on Monday. It was at the meeting that imposition of ban on the use of motorcycles from 6.00 p.m to 6.00 a.m within the state was enforced, noting that it was necessary, considering the fact that criminals were using motorcycles to wreak havoc in the state. The police boss noted that “you are all aware that almost all the incidents of killings and robberies in recent times in Kano State were carried out on motorcycles. “We hereby call on all motorcycle users, including security operatives, to abide by the curfew, as checkpoints have been put in place across the state to check and arrest the violators.” http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/lead-stories/51352-gunmen-slaughter-3-children-of-sss-officer-in-their-mothers-presence-4-killed-in-kano-riot-10-others-killed-in-borno-plateau |
Private jets: CAN slams Kukah, Bakare http://www.osundefender.org/?p=68610 Rev. Fr. Kukah Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has condemned comments credited to the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah and Pastor Tunde Bakare, who claimed that acquisition of private jets by religious leaders diminishes moral voices of the church in the war against corruption and are therefore calling for a revolution in the Church of God. Speaking in a telephone interview, National Director of Research, Planning and Strategy, Elder Sunday Oibe, urged the Catholic bishop and the former vice presidential candidate of CPC, that if they have anything against the person of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, they should come out and say so, and not hide under the cloak of the gift of a jet to attack the CAN president. Oibe, who doubles as the Public Relations Officer of Northern CAN, said he who lives in a glass house should not throw stones. He said: “If there is any clergyman in the country whose constituency is government, it is Bishop Kukah, who served every government in power in the last decade. “He thinks people have forgotten in a hurry how he served in Obasanjo’s government and turned round to attack the former president, or his fraternity with the former Governor James Ibori and his Rivers State counterpart, Peter Odili.” |
Obasanjo’s ex-aide, ACN, ANPP flay President over Odi, Zaki Biam, others MONDAY, 19 NOVEMBER 2012 00:00 FROM JOHN-ABBA OGBODO, ADAMU ABUH (ABUJA) AND TUNDE AKINOLA (LAGOS) NEWS - NATIONAL User Rating: / 1 PoorBest http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=105325:obasanjos-ex-aide-acn-anpp-flay-president-over-odi-zaki-biam-others-&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 COMMENTS by President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday during his presidential chat with journalists elicited sharp criticisms Monday. An aide of erstwhile President Olusegun Obasanjo, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) faulted Jonathan’s comments. The Obasanjo’s former aide condemned Jonathan’s position on the killings of some people in Odi and Zaki Biam in Bayelsa and Benue State in that order during Obasanjo’s tenure while the two political parties said that the President’s comments were full of doublespeak. In 1999, following the killing of five policemen, Obasanjo deployed troops in Odi in the course of which many civilians were killed and many houses burnt. During the media chat on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) last Sunday, Jonathan faulted the action of the former president saying that it did not stop the crises. Obasanjo’s former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, Monday said that the president did not give the correct account of all that happened. “During a live broadcast of the presidential media chat to the nation on the evening of November 18, 2012, President Goodluck Jonathan said that the military operation in Odi by the Nigerian Armed Forces in 1999, which was ordered by President Olusegun Obasanjo, did not solve the problem or stop the killing of soldiers, policemen and innocent civilians in the Niger Delta area by the terrorists and militants. He also said that all he saw in Odi after he went there on an official visit as Deputy Governor were the dead bodies of old people. With the greatest respect to Mr. President this is factually incorrect. He has either forgotten the relevant facts or he has been misinformed. Whichever way he is mistaken and it is important for those of us that proudly served the Obasanjo administration to respond to him in order to clarify the issues, clear the air and set the record straight for the sake of history and posterity. I had the privilege of being briefed about all the facts by President Olusegun Obasanjo himself and Col. Kayode Are, the former Director General of the State Security Service. Immediately after the Presidential Media Chat and I believe that it is appropriate to share some of those facts with members of the Nigerian public given the grave assertion and serious charge that President Jonathan has made. Those facts are as follows. “Five policemen and four soldiers were killed by a group of Niger Delta militants when they tried to enter the town of Odi in Bayelsa State in order to effect their arrest. This happened in 1999. After the brutal killing of these security personnel President Olusegun Obasanjo asked the then Governor of Bayelsa State, Governor Alamieyeseigha, to identify, locate, apprehend and hand over the perpetrators of that crime. The governor said that he was unable to do so and President Obasanjo, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, took the position that security personnel could not be killed with impunity under his watch without a strong and appropriate response from the Federal Government. Consequently, he sent the military in to uproot and kill the terrorists and to destroy their operational base, which was the town of Odi. The operation was carried out with military precision and efficiency and its objectives were fully achieved. The terrorists were either killed and those that were not killed fled their operational base in Odi, were uprooted, were weakened, were demoralised and were completely dispersed. That was the purpose of the whole exercise and that purpose was achieved. The truth is that the killing of security agents and soldiers with impunity by the Niger Delta militants virtually stopped after the operation in Odi and remained at a bare minimum right up until the time that President Obasanjo left power eight years later in 2007. I advise those that doubt this to go and check the records,” he said. Fani-Kayode continued: “The same thing was done in Zaki Biam in Benue State in the north-central zone of Nigeria in 2001 after 19 soldiers were murdered in cold blood and then brutally beheaded by some terrorists from that area. Again after the Federal Government’s strong military response in Zaki Biam the killing of security personnel with impunity stopped. The objectives of the military operations in both Odi and Zaki Biam were to stop such killings, to eliminate and deal a fatal blow to those that perpetrated them and to discourage those that may seek to carry out such barbarous butchery and mindless violence in the future. Those were the objectives and nothing more and clearly those objectives were achieved. “There is no doubt that after Odi there was still unrest, agitations, protests, kidnappings and the blowing up and sabotage of oil pipelines in the Niger Delta area but there were hardly any more attacks on or killing of soldiers and security personnel by the terrorists and militants because they knew that to do that would attract a swift and forceful reaction and terrible retribution from the Nigerian military. To stop and deter those attacks and killings was the objective of President Obasanjo and that objective was achieved. “President Goodluck Jonathan was therefore in error when he said that Odi did not solve the problem of killings in the Niger Delta area by the Niger Delta militants. Not only did it stop the killings but it is also an eloquent testimony of how to deal with terrorists, how to handle those that kill our security personnel with impunity and how to deter militants from killing members of our civilian population and thinking that they can get away with it. If President Obasanjo had not taken that strong action at that time many more of our civilian population and security personnel would have been killed by the Niger Delta militants between 1999 and 2007. By doing what he did at Odi and Zaki Biam President Obasanjo saved the lives of many and put a stop to the killings and terrorism that had taken root in the Niger Delta area previous to that time.” The former aide also described as unfortunate the reactions of Nigerians to Obasanjo’s position on the activities of Boko Haram. He said: “On the issue of Boko Haram it is unfortunate that President Obasanjo’s comments have been misconstrued and his views misrepresented. He never said that the Odi treatment should be applied to Boko Haram or that such action is appropriate in these circumstances. What he said was that a solution ought to have been found or some sort of action ought to have been taken sooner rather than allow the problem to fester over time like a bad wound and get worse. There can be no doubt that he was right on this because, according to President Jonathan’s own Chief of Army Staff, no less that 3,000 people have been killed by Boko Haram in the last two years alone. That figure represents approximately the same number of people that were killed by the IRA in Northern Ireland and the British mainland in the 100 years that the war between them and British lasted and before peace was achieved between the two sides. The same number of casualties that the IRA inflicted on the people of the United Kingdom in 100 years is the same number of casualties that Boko Haram have managed to inflict on our people in just two. This is unacceptable and it is very disturbing. The Federal Government must cultivate the courage and the political will to stop the killings by Boko Haram and to find a permanent solution to the problem. When President Obasanjo was in power he handled such matters decisively, with vigour and with the utmost urgency. He brought justice to the perpetrators quickly and promptly and he did whatever he had to do to protect the lives and property of the Nigerian people. The truth is that the strategy that he adopted to fight terrorism and mass murder worked very well and it was very effective. For President Goodluck Jonathan to suggest otherwise is regrettable,” Fani-Kayode said. On their part, the ACN and the ANPP yesterday said that the chat indicated that the PDP-led administration had no solution to the country’s many problems The ACN expressed serious concerns over conflicting statements emanating from Jonathan and his spokespersons, saying what had now emerged as a credibility deficiency syndrome afflicting the presidency raised questions over who indeed was in charge. In a statement issued in Abeokuta yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed, the ACN said the concerns arose because of the frequency with which the President contradicted those he appointed as spokespersons, and in view of the fact that the credibility of his Administration was at stake. “Credibility is a key issue in governance, and lack of it renders a government impotent. Perhaps this worsening credibility gap in the Jonathan Administration is one of the reasons that it had so far failed to perform to expectation,” it said. The ACN said Jonathan on Sunday, during his media chat denied that his government had revoked the power contract awarded to Canadian firm, Manitoba, even though his spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, had been widely quoted as saying - unequivocally - that the President had cancelled the contract. Also, the party said while the same Abati had been widely quoted as saying, in August and this month, that the government was engaged in ‘’backroom channel’’ talks with Boko Haram, Jonathan was categorical in saying, during the media chat, that there was no dialogue with the group because there had yet been no face to it. According to the ACN, it is also instructive that Jonathan has finally confirmed the reported illness of the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, even when the spokespersons for the President and the First Lady said she was hale and hearty, and implied she was vacationing abroad, even as reports circulated that she was being treated for an illness in Germany. In a statement issued by the national publicity secretary of the party, Emma Eneukwu, the ANPP lamented Jonathan’s responses to some of the questions posed to him on the occasion. The ANPP said: “For starters, when asked about the on-going constitution amendment, the President declined to take any position on the myriad of issues being raised for amendment in the constitution, with the self-serving explanation that it would be in the best interest of Nigerians to suggest areas in the constitution to be amended. However, we believe that it is the sign of a leader with ideas and direction to have a clear-cut legislative agenda, as a signature of his policy philosophy.” “Secondly, when he was reminded about his campaign promise of reducing poverty, President Jonathan quickly charged in to tell Nigerians that he never promised to reduce poverty, but rather told the populace when he was campaigning for their votes that he wanted to ‘create wealth.’ “This is a clear political equivocation which is patently illiterate at best and self-indicting at worst. Nigerians are now left to wonder who Mr. President had set out to empower all along. This is because, for sure, creating wealth might actually be a metaphor for putting more money into the hands of his already rich party members and cronies, while leaving the poor of the nation in the hands of chance,” he added. |

Monguno is that not the man called by Boko haram to mediate for them?E be like say the dots keep connecting to PDP!!! na wa o! |
^^^^ ![]() |
Obasanjo unfair to Jonathan on Boko Haram, say Monguno, Kashamu http://www.osundefender.org/?p=67747 Elder statesman Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Chief Buruji Kashamu, at the weekend, criticised ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism of President Goodluck Jonathan on corruption and his handling of Boko Haram. Obasanjo spoke during the event marking the 40th anniversary on the pulpit of clergyman, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor. Monguno, one of the Borno elders nominated by the sect to moderate their proposed talks with the government, told reporters in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital that he had no moral right to criticise his successors. He said: “Somebody who wanted to extend beyond the constitutional term, tried his very best to extend but was rejected is now advising government to do the wrong thing”. The former Minister of Petroleum said Obasanjo’s prescription of military action, the type of which he unleashed on the Odi community would only compound the problem. “I do not agree with our former President that the President should use force, use the military to crush what they always call the Boko Haram,” Alhaji Monguno said, adding that though he does not believe what he sees, hears or reads in the media, describing the President as weak does not even arise. He said even in the military, soldiers do not want to go to war unless it is absolutely necessary. He noted that even the United Nations does not believe in using force in such situations and advised Obasanjo to look back on his military and political days. Monguno said rather than use force, President Jonathan should explore peaceful means of resolving the Boko Haram threat “The President could come out and still employ the same tactics, which he and the late president (Umaru Yar’Adua) employed to have persuaded the militants in the southsouth. He could have employed the same methods for the Boko Haram of the north. The northerners were expectant that he was going to use that,” Alhaji Monguno said. He urged government to realise that every child born belongs to Nigeria and attention should be given to all to improve the standard of living. Kashamu, in a statement, said it was wrong of the former president to have said Jonathan was slow with Boko Haram. He urged Obasanjo to purge himself of his messianic postures. “He is quick to recount his “exploits” while in office. But the truth is: the foundation of some of the challenges that we are grappling with today were laid during his last years in office.” Kashamu said: “Obasanjo regaled us with his efforts at brokering truce with the Boko Haram, but we were all witnesses to what happened to his host, Babakura Fugu. He was killed two days after he met with Obasanjo. What does that suggests? It is my humble view that the swift reaction of the Boko Haram sect was a vote of no confidence on his “peace mission”. Obasanjo had hoped to pull the strings from behind. But, as they say, man proposes, God disposes. Yar’Adua died and providence threw up President Jonathan. Boko Haram is perhaps partly a response in the North to Obasanjo’s politics of imposition and dictatorship. “Now, Northern leaders are made to appear in the eyes of their people like insensitive leaders leading to a growing challenge to their vision for the development of their region and peoples. I would implore them not to allow this internecine restiveness to continue to develop and further impoverish and disillusion the Peoples of this region. The indices already show that the North has a lot of catching up to do in various areas, including education, social and economic development. “There is no doubt about the immense resources with which the North has been blessed, including the most fertile arable land, solid minerals and perhaps hidden reserves of petroleum resources under the now encroaching dessert lands. It is time the leaders recapture the old unity for which the region was known and take necessary steps to harness these resources for the benefit of the region and the country as a whole. “Those who aspire for leadership in the South must not think that weak Northern unity and leadership is necessarily an advantage. The problems faced by our own President Jonathan in executing his plans for National development as a result of the erosion of unity in the north by politically motivated sectarian violence is sufficient evidence that no region of Nigeria can develop as an Island on its own. “The secessionist notions behind some of the regional integrationists in the South are part of the results of failed leadership in the past, which President Jonathan is now saddled, with the unenviable task of resolving. Now, some historical revisionists wish to place the blame upon the victim of his misrule.” On corruptin, he said: “Former President Obasanjo wastes no time in flaunting his anti-corruption achievements while in office. His recent comment on the anti-corruption war is coming on the heels of a similar one he made last year in Geneva, Switzerland, but we all know that his so-called anti-corruption war was selective. He only unleashed the EFCC upon persons who were not in his good books. Many of the nouveau riche billionaires that his administration produced are now facing trial for one economic crime or the other. It has been said that “those for whom palm-kernels were cracked by a benevolent spirit should not forget to be humble”. Simple discretion dictates that they should be humble and allow the people who have come in with fresh and more workable ideas to do their work. “After all, the same Mallam Nuhu Ribadu that Obasanjo constantly claims the praise for appointing as EFCC Chairman, described corruption under Obasanjo as worse than that of late General Sani Abacha, according to a United States cable obtained by Wikileaks. The report stated that at a meeting which the former US Ambassador to Nigeria, Robin Sanders, had with Mallam Ribadu to discuss his removal from the EFCC, Ribadu told the US ambassador that Obasanjo was good at covering his tracks while admitting that corruption was worse under Obasanjo.” |
Nigeria: Katsina's 60 Megawatts Power Projects - Will They Come to Fruition? BY YUSHA'U A IBRAHIM, 19 NOVEMBER 2012 Katsina — On Monday the 12th November 2012, Governor Ibrahim Shehu Shema of Katsina state flagged off the construction of a 30mw solar energy plant in Kankia town of Kankia local government area of the state. The plant is estimated to cost 55 million euro, the equivalent to N13.7 billion, according to the Katsina state commissioner of resource development, Engineer Musa Nashuni. With the flagging off of Kankia 30mw energy project, Katsina state now has three energy plants underway, and expected to generate 60mw after completion. The first was Rimi-Lamba 10mw wind-mill farm which was initiated by the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua when he was Governor of Katsina State. The project was later taken over by the federal government after late Yar'Adua had become President in 2007. The second project is the 20mw solar energy plant initiated by the incumbent administration. But several years after, the 10mw project is yet to see the light of the day. The site Manager of Vergnet Engineering Company, Mr. J. C Jallon said company has completed its works and the plant is ready for commissioning but the company is waiting for two of its engineers who will come to Nigeria from France to inspect some equipment before the commissioning of the plant. He said visa issue has been the problem. "We have applied for the visa for the officials to come to Nigeria but I don't know why the Nigerian Immigration officials are delaying us; I am going back to Abuja in respect of the issue because it they don't come to the site we cannot commission the plant," he said. "I met with Governor Ibrahim Shema last week and I lodged my complaints to him and I am sure he will intervene. Our major constraint now is delay in getting the visa for our engineers and once this problem is addressed the plant can be commissioned," he added. Both 30mw and 20mw energy plants were located in Kankia town of Kankia local government area of the state. They are located side by side. While the former was covers 70 hectares, the latter covers only 50 hectare. Both are being handled by German companies. While 30mw plant is being executed under Nigeria/German energy partnership, the 20mw is being constructed by German company. According to the commissioner for resource development, Nashuni, plans are underway to establish another 10mw solar energy plant in Funtua zone to boost electricity supply in the area. He said the 20mw will gulp about 70 million US dollar equivalent to N11.2 billion, while the proposed 10mw funtua solar plant will cost over N5bn. Nashuni added that feasibility studies had already been conducted for the 20mw plant and the project would be completed within one year. |

GOVERNORS’ INDECORUM | Print | E-mail Monday, 05 November 2012 DESPITE the considerable distance between their states, both Governors Aliyu Magataka Wamakko and Rochas Okorocha of Sokoto and Imo states, respectively could, as well, have been hewn from the same rock, judging from the similarities in their instinctive sentiments and dispositions that not even their elevated status and prestige could help them control. They both betrayed these sentiments recently, although on different occasions, when they physically assaulted other citizens for unjustifiable reasons. Governor Wamakko was reported to have been incensed by the failure of an official of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) to restore electric power supply to the governor’s hometown. After having paid the N17 million requested for the restoration of electricity, the governor was annoyed by the solid darkness that still enveloped his beloved hometown and he took a horsewhip to the PHCN official’s back to register his indignation. GOVERNOR Okorocha, in his own case, could not come to terms with the insult which the audacity of a fellow governor’s aide represented when that poor fellow refused to yield a seat to him at a public function because the seats had been reserved for his (the victim) principal, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State. If the victims of these governors’ assault bore the shame and humiliation of being flogged like despicable urchins stoically, and did not retaliate on account of the status of their aggressors, it then becomes logical to ask what these governors would have done in similar circumstances if they had not been governors. Would they have been aggressive to the point of assaulting their offenders physically? What pushed both of them into this abominable pitfall? Could it have been a faulty mindset or just righteous indignation? IT is obvious that both governors are bereft of the humility and circumspection required for the public service which has been thrust upon them by the people who elected them to serve in leadership positions. The conduct of these governors even detracts from the honour and prestige that ordinarily should ensue from their exalted positions. It also takes the issue of their immunity granted by the constitution to the most absurd and bizarre extreme. IN reality, there are situations which test the attributes of an individual with respect to certain virtues like patience, anger management and self-control and in the particular case of the PHCN, the organisation and its officials can actually drive people to their wits’ end in terms of its poor services and the response of its officials at crucial moments. In the past, communities have literally taken up arms against PHCN sub-stations and their staff when they were miffed and frustrated by its performance. As a matter of fact, there are certainly many Nigerians out there who might actually think that the PHCN official, who was whipped by Governor Wamakko, got his just desserts for failing to deliver after having been paid N17 million. HOWEVER, the matter spoke more of expediency than propriety in its totality if some hypothetical questions were posed. Should the PHCN have billed the Governor for those materials which it ought to provide ordinarily? Is Governor Wamakko in the habit of paying money like that to PHCN even for towns in his state that are not his hometowns? Did he pay the money from his personal purse or from the state’s coffers? Was the money properly appropriated in the budget? These are salient issues thrown up by the development that should interest the people. GOVERNOR Okorocha, in his own case, was simply overwhelmed by his airs of self-worth and importance. Although these are hardly in doubt, they probably would have been better reinforced by a humbler and more circumspect disposition on his part. His attack on Governor Obi’s aide was not an ignoble descent into crassness; it betrayed a covert and subtle but needless struggle for supremacy and recognition. Sadly, democracy can do better without these abominable behaviours from people in leadership positions. Both governors have failed dismally to provide examples, let alone shiny ones, to the people who see them as role models which governors should be. If people, who they lead, take to their examples, order will literally take leave of society and then who will they be governors over? BUT these behaviours can easily be situated in the matrix of general absence of decorum in the Nigerian society as manifested in the many crude shows of power by people in authority, the blaring sirens literally pushing other motorists out of the roads, the beating up of people by uniformed aides of public officials and the mindless driving of bullion vans among others. These are all deplorable conducts that should be repudiated by any decent democracy. Both Governors Wamakko and Okorocha of Sokoto and Imo states respectively have failed to show the way out of the mess, and it is instructively disappointing that they are remorseless. |

tomakint: @9javoice, you will live long for digging this up, My God shall make your enemies your footstool in Jesus Name (Amen)! Indeed, just like my signature, “truth is a mystery; it takes time to unravel itself” I have always believed in that principle all my life and it’s really helping me. The first, second and third excerpts are well orchestrated and reliable. Prince Iboro Udom version’s was excellent and succinctly captured the whole episode the way he ended his piece with, “Others are enjoined to also tell Nigerians what they know about the war, the pogrom and proffer a way out. We have lied for too long, we have pretended for too long. Time for admission of wrong and confession of sins is now. The Igbos deserve our sympathy and off course, apologies.” Pini Jason’s version where he said, “…in Nigeria, my truth is a lie, and your lie is the truth!” is a common dessert in the country. The Major General Alexander Madiebo accounts was very direct and unbiased, I remember coming across something related (although not as loaded as this) in his book, “The Nigerian Revolution and the Biafran War.” I cannot agree less, you really made my day, I must confess that after the book, ‘The Fall of Biafra’ by Ben Gbulie this excerpt comes next as one of the expository and revealing accounts on the Nigerian-Biafran Civil War. I am impressed by this noble truth, I have always believed the Igbos deserve REPARATION, I have a short post to that on this forum. Imagine how we just lost the oil-rich Bakassi like that, indeed once an Aboki, always an Aboki. The problem with so many of us is that, the bitterness some of our fathers nursed against the Igbos have been transferred down to some of us, hence the truth about the Biafra genocide claim has been beclouded by prejudiced-driven hatred for a progressive tribe especially from deluded clowns in the house (chief among them is one thing that calls himself ‘Ogbomosho Goat’ aka dayokano)! The Bakassi episode really catch my fancy, a pay back time for greed, and this is the same man going about shouting, ‘praise the Lord’, indeed, the heart is deceitful and terribly wicked! I hope the respected literary Icon (Professor Chinua Achebe) and others involved can move quickly and see how the Pretender-In-Command, Gowon, will be made to face International Court of Justice for his government crimes against defenseless nursing mothers, pregnant women and children before he commits suicide! Wole Soyinka will always be an adored Personality to me till I breathe my last! The tribalistic tendencies of Nairaland discussants always end up watering down sensitive topics that we ought to have benefitted maximally from, most times some ‘smart clowns’ on Nairaland even have a way of bungling debates and shifting them to their ‘Comfort Zones’ by asking for evidences each time you make your points. Some are fond of derailing sensitive topics and at the end defeat the purpose that topic would have generated if well discussed. Indeed, many Nairalanders have dumped this forum for ‘Nigerian Village Square’ because of the childish and wayward antecedents of some goons here who just want to be heard at all cost even though they are making a fool of themselves.^^^^ Another Achebe quoting from another biafra propaganda rubbish without facts or knowledge.Facts please on your claims and source that all you said about there action and reactions were true with statistics of then and now? ![]() |
ilugunboy: Pure rubbish...no need wasting precious minutes reading this balderdash^^^^^ okay ![]() |
Nice piece!!! but it is only better you don't bother. Some people have being programmed machine like to act that way and remain that way without the will to check or verify things before they comment. The Kaze & co you talk of are not groups or persons you want to take seriously.Kaze has always being a fanatic in his own way and religious extremist too! So just maintain facts and allow the almighty judge. As for this nation,it remains a haven of deceit and promotion of wickedness/corruption.Anything else becomes the enemy and the people give such nonsense propulsion and grounds to survive so long it is against a tribe or faith they hate.Even if we are to take this allegations seriously, then how come we say Henry okah is wrong for associating our president with October 1?Do we say that Azazzi forgot to spell out the real enemies of the state.Has the president released the list of sponsors?Do we also believe that this things happen and arrest were never made?what happened to the investigations and information gather from suspects of the BH?What happened to the PDP members that were accused. Why is Modu sheriff and co walking free men despite alot of allegations directed to there quarters. Are the lifes wasted not enough to make one sacrifice any alliance and any group no matter what for justice to be done? Such a sick nation that individuals come before life and the state!!!Buhari you remain my role model and i love you as a person. You have nothing to worry about.Time will tell and what ever one sows he shall reap. |
eGuerrilla: We are not talking about a foreign Nation but rather a couple of 419-Israeli business men operating in cohort with local collaborators.E follow! my problem remains. They will never ever let una pass them. They can never do that as e no be there priority. So i say lets build our indigenous technology and stop bullshitting. If South Africa and co can why not us?Even in Syria the opposition is building small arms and ammunition that is more than what we even try to explore technologically.Lets grow up and stop sucking breast at this age.haba! |
HQ: And when did we start purchasing drones from Isreal? This contract and other counter insurgency trainings were awarded since Obj term to curb the Niger delta militancy and bunkering. This is suppose to have being fully operational by now and i wonder what is taking so long. That we are still yet to see the drones in full action after over 7 years. |
