RedCard1: It was about 10:09 that I decided to go to Diamond Bank Nkpolu/Mile 3 branch along Ikwerre Road in Port Harcourt for the processing of my Bank Verification Number, BVN. The bank isn't far from RSUST round about. I left for the Bank with my good neighbour who I convinced to opening an account with the bank for his wife, so his wife came along with us. We got there at about 10:40. The BVN took less than 20minutes so, by 11:00 we would have been on our way home but for the que on the exit door. So we waited for 5minutes, it was 11:05 now. My neighbour's wife was out already and my neighbour was in the exit door (abi na room) set to go while I was still standing. All of a sudden, we heard gun shots but it didn't shake us until it kept sounding. Over 200 people (staff included) inside the bank started shivering. People started recieving calls from outside that armed robbers were around. I got close to the window, opened the curtain a bit just to get a glance at what was happening outside of the bank but I couldn't see anything beyond the bank premises. I only saw customers hiding behind themselves outside the bank. The gun kept making the scary noise. At this point, my heart started boiling, I began to think of my mother, siblings, friends and other beloved ones. My neighbour was stuck in the exit door as the door power was switched off cos the order was no going out or coming in. We ran into different rooms. Some women started crying. An old man (supposedly in his 70s) started rolling on the floor. The bank staff started calling police men but police didn't come despite the fact that a police station was just at UST junction not far from the bank. 14minutes later, there was great silence in the area. That was when a staff got a call and was told that the robbers had gone but they didn't still allow movement in the bank. People started coming out of several rooms in great numbers. We started complaining that we wanted to go. After sometime, a staff (don't know if it was the manager) started ordering everybody to stop filling forms and withdrawal/deposit slips. He said the bank had stopped operation for the day. Now the door was open, we rushed out and saw police men checking on a green colour 4runner jeep parked directly opposite the bank. That was when we discovered that robbers had attacked a man and took over 1million Naira from him. The robbers didn't come for the bank. I'm glad I'm resting at home now. As I no die today eh, I no fit die again. tank GOD 4 d gift of life.... |

Career › Re: 5 Things You Need To Survive In The Real World As A Nigerian Graduate by harry509: 3:34pm On Oct 21, 2015 |
Emasky4real: This article is dedicated to students who are still in high school, and undergraduates in the higher institutions learning. For those who are privileged to have access to formal education, there is this long time belief that higher education would guarantee one financial security, fame and success in life. Hence the common advice parents give their children is “go to school, get good grades and a high paying job is guaranteed”. The reality is that this belief and strategy of surviving in the real world is now outdated. Graduates who see the acquisition of a degree as a means of surviving in the real world only get outside there to find out that they were not ready for life at all.
To survive in a 21st century world as a Nigerian graduate, you must equip yourself with the following five tools.
(1) SKILL: One thing you are going to need badly after school and for the rest of your life is money, that is why you still see men in their 40s, 50s even 60s still riding okada and driving taxi to earn money. The truth is that immediately you become a graduate your parents or those who were responsible for your training will stop supporting you financially. They will assume you now have all it takes to survive, so the collection of pocket money will stop, and you will have to start solving your financial problems with your own earning ability. What this implies is that you will have to look for job with your certificate, and most often you will likely be underemployed, meaning you will not be paid what you are worth. The consequence of this is that you will end up not having enough financial resources to actualize your goals. Solving your financial problem will become difficult, and definitely the need for money will rise, because you will start thinking of getting a place for yourself, so that you can be on your own, getting married, going for a master’s program and so on. As this happens, psychological problems such as frustration, depression, self-pity, low self-esteem will start setting in, and if you are not careful, you may get demoralized to the point giving up on life.
To survive or avoid this you need a skill. Skill is the ability to do something very well. In the real world, people don't pay you for your certificate, they pay you for what you can do, and that's is the only legal way of getting money in the society, if you do otherwise, you would be called a fraudster, a thief or an armed robber. For example if I know how to repair phones anyone who has any problem with his/her phone will always come to me , and by the time I help him/her to solve the problem, the individual will pay me for that service. Now the question is what can you do? How can you render direct service with your current course of study?
The point here is you must have a skill. If you have none yet, enroll in a training center and start learning something. There are so many things you can learn within three months, and that would earn you nothing less than 50,000 per month.
Never look down on any skill, just consider your interest and what you love doing, and then acquire a skill in that area. When you do this, you can easily become your own boss after school or even before you graduate. If you are a graduate already reading this article and don’t have a job yet I recommend same. With an extra skill, you can increase your income. Never put your hope on getting a job that is not certain. To be forewarned is to before armed.
(2) INFORMATION: There is a general believe that knowledge is power, and that is very true. The 21st century world is information driven, and you need to consistently update yourself with the latest information in the areas that are critical to your survival. Sometimes people suffer because of ignorance.
If you must meet up with the latest trend, you have to develop the habit if continuous learning, you must be an ardent reader and an unrelenting information seeker. Try as much as possible to know everything you need to know that will help you to maximize your potentials. Always remember that what you don't know is more powerful than you. Keep yourself informed so that you will not be deformed.
Besides the acquisition of information, one other critical thing is the application of the information you have obtained. Having information without using is meaningless. Strive as much as possible to know all that you need to know about moving to your next level and take action at the right time.
(3) GUT: According to oxford advance learner dictionary, gut is defined as the courage or ability to do something difficult or unpleasant. The truth is that life is not fair for anybody, and definitely you are going to have your own share of life's difficulty in your quest for success. If you must succeed in the real world, gut is a necessary factor, because without it you will lack the courage to take action when things are not favorable, and that will keep you long in the valley of mediocrity. You may be very intelligent while in school, but after graduation you will discover that so many of your classmates who were not as intelligent as you were back in your school days are getting ahead, the reason is simply because they have the gut to try their ideas and that's what is getting them going.
To develop this quality, all you have to do is to cure yourself of every known fear. Experts in the field of personal development have identified certain fears that contribute to people's failure in life. Such fears include, the fear of death, fear of loss love, fear of ill-health, fear of criticism, fear of physical pain, fear of old age and so on. I assure you that if you can master these basic fears, you are going to have enough gut to try anything. Action is what produces result. You will never succeed if you don't try and to try all you need is gut.
(4) HARD WORK: In all of human history, hard work has been a critical tool of success, nothing can replace it. For you to survive and excel in the real world, you need an unwavering ability to take action, and persevere until you succeed. Most persons fail in life due to idleness. If you want to be poor all you need to do is be idle, and before you know it poverty will overtake you. A wise man once said that “where talent is lazy, hard work overtakes it”. No matter how knowledgeable, gifted and talented you are, if you refused to be hard-working, you will definitely be a failure. Always have it in mind that hard work is the only way. Never forget to always blend your hard work with strategic planning and persistence. Hard work combined in this manner will produce success.
(5) NETWORKING: Networking has to do with your ability to connect with people that will help you in getting to your next level. Niyi Adesanya, a personal development expert based in Nigeria once define individual competitiveness (in my own word, your capacity for success) as ‘’what you know + how you express it × by who you know and who knows you’’. I completely agree with his definition. The caliber of people you know and people who know you has a way of facilitating your success in life. As the world is today, the people we know to be the best in certain field are not actually the best. There are so many people who would have out-shined them if they are brought out of obscurity, but because they are not known by those who can position them to receive the honour they are worthy of, they remain irrelevant in their cocoon. If we must fully maximize our potential and remain relevant, our ability to network and connect with people who can help us get to our next level is critical.

awoyam1: http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2015/10/20/buhari-launches-260km-super-highway-project-pledges-speedy-completion
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday launched the 260-kilometre Calabar-Kastina-Ala Super Highway road project at Obung, Cross River.
The President expressed the hope that the road would create a new vista of business opportunities for Cross River and the nation at large while launching the project.
Buhari commended Governor Ben Ayade for his vision and foresight in conceptualising the project.
“So, I must at this juncture commend the state governor, Sen. Ben Ayade and his team for their foresight in conceptualising this project.
“Given the multiplier effect these two laudable projects are expected to generate, in terms of aggregate spinoffs, I want to assure you of my determination and as well as the commitment of the Federal Government to ensuring that this road and indeed the seaport runs to a quick completion.
“Let me commend our young Governor, Professor Ben Ayade who globe-trotted to get these core foreign investors to invest in these huge projects.”
According to the president, the road which will link south-south and northern parts of the country, when completed, will also ensure a reduction in travel time and man-hour.
He said that the project was a significant milestone in the economic transformation agenda of the state.
Buhari, who was forced to abandon his official Chopper and embarked on road journey to the venue of the event due to heavy rain, pledged to be back in due course for the inauguration of the project.
“I feel the warmth of your embrace and the passion in your gaze.
“The future of Cross River State is certain.
“I am one with you on this. I promise to come back to commission (inaugurate) this road upon completion and that is very soon too.’’
In his remarks, Ayade said apart from the road project, the state would also be constructing a deep sea port in Bakassi.
According to him, the two projects will be executed through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) .
He said the idea behind the projects rooted back to when the state lost its oil wells to Akwa Ibom upon the loss of Bakassi.
“The theological kinetics of this road started with the loss of our oil wells consequent upon the loss of Bakassi, therefore the state was reduced to wants in body and spirit.
“It became imperative that we reconstruct a new means of production; we need to open the horizon to get teeming young people employed.
“It is against such background as I sought to leave this state it became very clear and evident that we must construct new means of production.
“Within the limit of our resources, the projects would have been impossible but because we know that you are the President of all, we know that once we dream, it is his duty to make the dream a reality that is why we dreamt that we need to construct a deep seaport.
“As soon as I sent a letter to you on the Bakassi seaport, it took less than one day in your office and it was minuted out.”
On the 260km super highway, Ayade stated that it would serve as an evacuation corridor from the seaport.
“It will have a track of 14metres and a key wall of 680 metres that will allow for vessels from outside and every other vessel to berth.
“It will, therefore, provide an evacuation corridor for vessels, material and equipment lying in Calabar uniformly, effortlessly to Northern Nigeria.”
According to the governor, the existing federal road will require up to five to six hours to get to Benue State from Calabar but with the construction of this super highway, only one hour, 30 minutes will be spent.
“What is special about this super highway? It is that we have internet connectivity all through the highway, a photographic solar system with a satellite antenna.
“Mr president, it is also going to be the first to have anti-sleep bumps on the highway.
“It is also going to be the first to have speed cameras. It is also going to be the first to have ambulatory services.
“Mr President, this road is a digital road, designed for the 21st century.’’
The governor expressed optimism that the road would be completed in the next four to five years.
“We envisioned that this road will be done in the next four to five years.
“We also have people who have collaborated and partnered with us.
“ They include an Israeli-British firm, the broad spectrum that had provided 500 million euros.
“We also have Heritage, Skye and Zenith banks.
“We know that with the support Mr. President has given to us, the project will be a reality.’’ I knew dat BABA is vry serious and focused, dats y I voted 4 him Sai-buhari |

Crime › Re: Guests Kill 29-year-old Motorcyclist At Birthday Party by harry509: 5:57pm On Oct 20, 2015 |
kestolove95: There was confusion at a birthday party on Agbekolade Street in the Mushin area of Lagos on Sunday after some of the guests hacked a 29-year-old motorcyclist, Lateef Sura, to death.
Our correspondent learnt that Lateef, who had just returned from work, had gone to the party at about 8pm on the invitation of a yet-to-be-identified friend.
It was gathered that while Lateef was about to enter the gathering, some of the guests brought out weapons and attacked him.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the party was quickly deserted after Lateef laid in a pool of blood. He was thereafter rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, where he was confirmed dead.
It was gathered that the matter was reported at the Alakara Police Division, and policemen came to arrest the party organisers.
When our correspondent visited the street on Monday, residents lamented the killing of the 29-year-old.
The deceased’s mother, Mrs. Bolatumi Saka, said Lateef had gone to a shop to eat bread and egg, when a friend invited him to the party. The woman added that her son was killed by suspected cultists, despite not engaging in street violence.
She said, “He was an easy-going person, and rode a motorcycle for a living. When he came back on Sunday evening, he went to a mallam’s shop to eat bread and egg. As he sat down, one of his friends walked by and said, ‘Lateef, let’s see someone briefly at that party.’
“They said it was a birthday party. A man threw a party for his one-year-old child. But, at about 8.30pm, somebody raised the alarm that Lateef was in a pool of blood. We rushed him to LUTH, but he was confirmed dead.
“Everybody ran away after the killing of my son. I know that the killers of my son will soon meet their waterloo.”
The younger brother, Olalekan Saka, said the deceased told him at about 6pm that he wanted to eat, have his bath and relax from the hectic day’s work.
He said, “He did not plan for any party. I saw him at about 6pm. The next call I received was that he had been killed.
“When I got to the place, his blood was all over the scene. He was stabbed in the shoulder and side.”
A police source said two principal suspects, who were at the party, had also been arrested in the Fadeyi area on Monday. One of them, identified as Morufu Liadi, was said to have been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja, for further investigation.
A landlord in the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the two suspects were Toba’s boys.
“We knew that Lateef was not a threat to anyone because he was an easy-going person. Our street is also not a hub of cultists. It was the party that brought different kinds of people. The two suspects are Toba’s boys. They must have mistaken the deceased for a member of one of the rival gangs.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, said he would get back to our correspondent on the matter. He, however, had yet to get back as of press time.

lolaxavier: ABEOKUTA-An assistant superintendent of police attached to the Adigbe Police Station in Ogun State, Emmanuel Ogunlesi has inflicted a life-threatening injuries on the head of a 25-year-old student of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Peter Taiwo.
Taiwo, a Higher National Diploma 1 student of Computer Science was allegedly attacked by Ogunlesi at about 11:00pm last Thursday at Olatidoye Street in the Oluwo area of the state capital.
When our correspondent visited him on his sick bed at the hospital on Monday afternoon, the victim who looked emaciated was in a state of near-coma.
He could neither open his eyes nor utter any word . He was also so weak that he almost fell off a chair when attempts were made to sit him up.
According an witness, Kehinde Bello said Ogunlesi came to the student-dominated area on a motorcycle in company of another policeman and had earlier beaten two female students in the area with his baton on their buttocks and breasts before they escaped.
Bello further alleged that the police officer accosted Taiwo while in pursuit of the two female students who had taken to their heels, following the beatings they received from him.
Another witness alleged that Ogunlesi and his colleague however turned their attention to Taiwo who they pursued into his residence where he caught up with the fleeing student and allegedly dealt on him several blows on the head with his baton.
The policeman was said to have left the student unconscious in a pool of blood and escaped from the scene along with his colleague who rode the motorcycle.
Reacting to the incident, the Acting Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi told our correspondent that the police officer involved had already been summoned to the Eleweran headquarters of the Command and was currently undergoing interrogation.
Oyeyemi disclosed that the state Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali has also ordered a comprehensive investigation of the incident.
He added that the police high command in the state would not condone any form of violation of human rights of the citizens.
Meanwhile, the state Chairman of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Mr. Olayinka Folarin said that the CDHR would employ all legal means to ensure that justice was done concerning the matter.
Folarin also condemned alleged brutality by police officers against innocent citizens.
