That is what I mean by curse. It has been proven for a long time. What in this world has a black made in Africa that is being used all over the world without having western influence .Even the soccer and music has taken us far due the technology of the whites. Is this not a curse? Only when we start to do away with all those ills then we can progress. This one is suffering from mental slavery. I have no words for you. |

Runalong333: Yes , very few Muslims there. Do you think that really plays a part ?
Yes , that's where I feel we messed up ; independence. We had an opportunity to use the white systems left and add our own flavour to it , but messed up everything.
I get you. Yes. I think the fact that Christianity is the dominant religion is also a contributing factor. Any opposing view as regards to religion is not taken seriously. It's irrelevant like that. So many others are non religious. The kind of Islam practiced in Nigeria and a large chunk of West Africa is very backward; Islam and pagan beliefs in a mix. I could also say that about Christianity in Nigeria ( and Africa) though. But we don't get to hear things like "Islamaization of South Africa" . Using the systems set up by the colonial government would not have been realistic in the long run. We know ourselves more than they do. This is the present. We have to change our mindset. |

Runalong333: True. But if Nigerians are still the poorest people on earth with Our resources , why then would we expect black South Africans to have all of their people out of poverty in 25 years yet we have failed to lift our own in 58 years ? It's like we expect miracles from them , part of the reason I called our country hypocritical . Whites in south Africa never lost anything and had an upper hand for hundreds of years , did we expect for that to suddenly disappear? . Blacks anywhere have the highest number of uneducated people because of the systems the colonialists put in place ,South Africa with its history should lead the pack if we are realistic . Nigeria has one the highest number of illiterates in the world, even though we had no whites for decades , if we had whites we would be at the bottom as well. Nigerian formal economy is ran mostly by foreigners like the shell companies and your Mtns with the help of rich nigerian stooges, the majority of us rely on hawking or petty businesses. Well I don't know how we stand a better chance of prosperity when they are growing more millionaires than us yearly . Yes they have slums , but majority have better access to good living standards and education . But it's all on our shoulders whether we can make the country work or not. We have a lot of potential. True. South Africa has no large Muslim population either. Why they have more millionaires is not so difficult to fathom. The country is now in the control of the majority. It wasn't a barren land 25 years ago. Institutions were already in place albeit for the white minority. Institutions we failed to factor from the onset. Like i said, different demographics, different problems. It's early to tell how situations will unfold. |

Bolustical: We blacks are so inhumane towards ourselves. We're so envious of ourselves and can go to length pulling each other down.
I am yet to see French men complaining about how Britons 'steal' their women in marriage and vice versa.
However, here in Africa, you see South Africans, Kenyans, Cameroonians crying about how Nigerians are taking their women.
I just hope justice is duly served.
Same South Africans Nigeria gave scholarships. The French and Britons don't talk like this about each other either. South Africa also offer scholarships to Nigerians. Condemn the crime and stop talking about how inhumane blacks are. The Germans and Russians and Americans didn't consider their humanity when they were humiliating their victims. |

Runalong333: Exactly. The country is far from perfect , but I was only trying to highlight the good steps they have taken to address the basics, which is what we need . Take some drastic steps to address the big issues ; decay in education, healthcare ,judiciary and the biggest being tribalism and religious sentiments. Unity can't be attempted without reducing these ills. Yes. In the end, we are different. Different mindsets. Different problems. Different demographics. It would be more difficult to get to the stage where basic infrastructure is a non-issue. Black south Africans are still the poorest; least educated. Private sector is still majorly in the hands of the white minority. We have better prospects to succeed, it's a shame we don't want any more discomfort than we already face. |

Runalong333: Thanks for this. Breaking up the country won't solve the problems on the ground. We need strong institutions that can really hold individuals accountable, like what I was saying about South Africa, you would swear their courts are ran by aliens, no favours or leniency for the rich and famous , infact I think they are punished more . We need something like this . I like the point you made about a whole tribe being blamed for failures of individuals , it's part of the nonsense that is keeping us backward and under performing. Yeah Bro. Gross generalisations. We do it to ourselves and carry the attitude outside. Blame everyone else but ourselves. South Africa already has strong institutions in place that can speak against an unruly government without fear of consequence. It has prevented a lot of drastic actions from being reality by sentimentalists. There are problems of course; A lot of revenge seeking folks. The country is not perfect. A lot can be done. And frankly, I think it's too early to tell how things will turn out. |

gidgiddy: As at 1960 when Nigeria got its independence, Nigeria was comparable to South Africa and South Korea.
Today, not only is South Korea 100 years ahead of Nigeria in terms of development, South Africa is far ahead as well.
I think that in the case of Nigeria, the country simply does not work. Bringing Yoruba/Hausa/Igbo together in 1914 was a disasterous mistake. All 3 ethnic groups should have been 3 different countries. We don't have a national philosophy, unifying factor or common value system. Out of our disunity, we expect miracles to happen? It doesn't work that way. It is time for Nigeria to disintegrate, we will all do better on our own than together Lol Nigeria disintegrating is - in vague terms - impossible at the level we have reached. The populace is united alright; united in the wrong things. Mediocrity, Religion, nepotism, tribalism, etcetera. All of these still exist in states that profess homogeneity for example. Why do they exist? I'm pretty sure you can figure that out. We don't hold individuals responsible for their actions these days. When anyone fails in his/her duty, we think the person's tribe has failed. Another person from a different tribe should try. We all think this way. It's not limited to any tribe. What Nigeria needs right now is large scale reforms. The youths need to be more involved. We have seen what that can do already. Repeating "true federalism" mantra and "disintegration" isn't going to solve anything if we speak of them like they are happening to foreigners. |
Politics › Re: Why Is Nigeria So Different From South Africa? by HarryDuce(m): 8:22am On Oct 06, 2018 |
We gradually lost our way from independence. After the civil war, almost every aspect of the society took a down turn.
We don't have strong institutions in place to checkmate the excesses of anybody. Everyone is playing victim; at the same time, we hear of the great exploits of everyone. Three major tribes are using every opportunity to massage their egos. In another end, we have the religious fanatics who mix religion with everything you can think of. Politicians use religious lines when they fail, the masses believe them.
We need strong institutions in place, independent of each other. The police, army, navy needs to be reformed. This is very important. |

kopite: Hard reality is that Ikwerre has the upper hand when it comes to votes and population. there are some ethnic groups that naturally follow ikwerre votes and that is etche and orashi region (ogba, egbema, ndoni, ekpeye). The ogonis have long in the days of obi wali and saro wiwa formed and unwritten alliance that is longstanding. Amaechi killed APC in 2015 by fielding Dakuku from Opobo (a core minority riverine) and his deputy from Abua (another minority) Tonye Cole will struggle to garner vote in kalabari region, reasons......Buguma-Abonnema battle for supremacy. long standing political tussle of relevance (go and check). they never vote for each other. They never support each other. In APC, party chairman from kalabari, governorship aspirant from kalabari. wrong political calculation. Amaechi keeps projecting wrongly. He solely believes in federal might of police, SARS and military. But on that day,all states have election. The plan of APC writing election and calling results is already known by wike and co.
The best bet still would have been magnus Abe. Lots of Ikwerre people believe that Ogoni should be the next governor after them.
this is my simple analysis. I agree. Magnus Abe is an unstable fellow; he can't handle the position of a governor. All in all, If Tonye Cole - and rivers APC - is capable of spreading enough propaganda or real substance, whichever, coupled with help from FG, he might just win. After all, that's how Wike won. |

Most of the success at that time can be attributed to the commitment and diligence of the leaders, the citizens; The country was recently independent. Regionalism had little to do with anything. Regionalism won't stop politicians and people in high positions from stealing. There's much to be done, so many loopholes to be closed. Regionalism is not going to solve any of that. |

Beautiful thing about America and Canada, they value skilled and gifted people. Yes to use them to grow their economy but they reward these people as well. Tell me the reward you have received for your skills and gifts from the Nigerian government. @The bold. You digress. I could say the same for many other countries that don't meddle in the affairs of others. Well, I'm being realistic here. I'm not particularly bothered about any supposed US conspiracy in Nigeria. Nigeria is too unstable for any further external meddling. Nigeria will always exist; Unified or not is of little importance. All I'm saying is we should not let ourselves be tossed about. History is there to learn from. |

lonelydora: US destroyed Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc and are gradually inching to destroy Nigeria. All because of oil. Check all the wars currently going on and see the role US played.
And this why i love Putin. He is somehow helping in checkmating the excesses of US. You might say so. I think the US government has no particular interest in Nigeria per say, but her neighbours. I'm particularly interested in why Ghana decided to go into any military agreement in the first place, considering how their president went on a rant in the just concluded UN meeting. For other countries, their intention is fairly obvious. They want resources; uranium and such. But for Nigeria, I'd say they don't want any country to have the kind of pan African effect Libya once had on the continent. It's not difficult to figure out why. |
