A 13-year-old Kenyan school-girl, who was photographed hanging dangerously on a motorbike carrying has received help from a Nairobi-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

Faith Jepchirchir went viral on the internet after her photo was shared on social media.

According to the Standard, the young girl had reportedly walked for seven kilometers to help her grandmother gather firewood which she sells for their up-keep. A boda boda rider offered to help ferry the firewood with the girl balancing atop the bike.

A social media user quickly snapped the photos which later made rounds on social media as jokes and memes.

The NGO, Soles for African Child, traced the girl to her grandmother’s home in Elgeyo Marakwet and gave her several pair of shoes. She has also received dozen of offers from well-wishers who are willing to support and finance her education.

Faith, who aspires to be a medical doctor told the NGO thats she plans to buy her first pair of shoes with her first salary. Her teachers describe her as hardworking and disciplined.

Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi on Friday vowed to help the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regain power in Kaduna State in 2019.

Hunkuyi, who represents Kaduna North at the National Assembly on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) was among the 14 senators who decamped to other parties on July 19.

The Senator said this while on a visit to the PDP secretariat in Kaduna on Friday, adding that he decided to join the party in line with the agreement between the R-APC and the opposition party.

“We came to tell you that we have formally left the APC and we shall not turn back again”, NAN quoted him as saying.

“We have moved to the PDP with all our structure to join hands to take back power in Kaduna State from the APC,” Hunkuyi said.

He advised the PDP executives in the state to cooperate with the returnees to ensure that the party wrestle power from the ruling APC.

Hunkuyi urged the state PDP chairman Mr Felix Hyat to set up a committee with membership comprising the returnees and other members to fix a date for their formal return to the party.

According him politics is about the people. Hunkuyi promised to mobilise all his supporters back to the PDP ahead of the 2019 poll.

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Bengaluru on Wednesday, July 25, arrested a Nigerian national with 155.5 grams of cocaine which was being transported from Mumbai to the city.

The accused identified as Ozy Chukwudu, 30, was intercepted by the NCB sleuths when he disembarked from a sleeper bus from Mumbai to Bengaluru.

With specific information of cocaine smuggling, the NCB team was waiting for his arrival from Mumbai.

Chukwudu, who did not have a passport and other documents, was carrying a polythene bag with 11 capsules which contained cocaine.

The drug was brought to Mumbai by an unidentified man hiding it in his stomach and was later handed over to Chukwudu to be brought to Bengaluru.

According to a press release by the NCB, Bengaluru, the value of the contraband is said to be around Rs 93 lakh in the international market.
"Based on examination, he was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act," said Sunil Kumar Sinha, zonal director, NCB, Bengaluru.

He was produced before the court yesterday, Thursday, July 26.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said investigation into tax incentives/waivers granted multi-national corporations is aimed at ensuring that Nigeria is not short-changed from the benefits of Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs).

Dogara dropped the hint at the opening of an investigative hearing by the House Joint Committee on Finance and Public Accounts.

He said the exercise would prevent revenue leakages from taxes and enhance employment opportunities.

“The overall aim of this investigation is to address anomalies that may impede the operations of foreign direct investments. We lawmakers are desirous of seeing a new vista of competitive, transparent and efficient FDIs to boost technology, skills and expertise, which have spurred growth in Japan, China, South Korea and others,” he said.

Chairman of the committee, Babangida Ibrahim (APC, Katsina), expressed disappointment at the attitude of the invited Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), which he said were in the habit of sending junior officers to represent them at investigative hearing.

He therefore declined to admit the representatives of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Ministry of Finance, and ordered heads of the concerned agencies or their management officials to be present in a yet to be announced date for continuation of the hearing.

A 55-year-old native doctor has told agents of the National Drugs and Law Enforcement Agency why he cultivated Indian hemp.
The NDLEA in Kebbi had arrested the 55-year-old native doctor, Arage Rikici, who allegedly cultivates Indian hemp farm at Kukun village in Fakai Local Government Area of the state.

The state Commander of the agency, Mr. Suleiman Jadi, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday that cannabis farming was unprecedented in the history of the state.

“Sequel to intelligence report, a team of NDLEA operatives in the state on July 24, 2018 discovered and destroyed Cannabis Sativa farm at Kukun village in Fakai local government area.

“The alleged owner of the illicit farm, Mr. Arage Rikici, a 55 year-old native doctor, was arrested and is presently in our custody undergoing investigation.

“This is a dangerous trend indicating a shift — Kebbi from being a drug consuming state to gradually being a drug producing state via cultivation,” Jadi said.

He advised farmers in the state not to indulge in illicit crop farming and to never abandon their legitimate cash crop cultivation.

The commander also urged landowners not to allow the cultivation of cannabis sativa crops, stressing that planting of such crops would affect soil fertility necessary for food crop cultivation.

“We will nip the development in the bud before it spreads,” he said.
He also called on the communities to be on the lookout for cannabis sativa plants in their domains and report same to the authority for prompt action.

Rikici told NAN that he planted the illicit crop for easy accessibility and self- consumption.

“You see, I am a native doctor, and because of my age, I cannot move as my two legs are stiff. In order to have easy access to it, I planted it on my farm which is close to my house, and hired boys to cultivate it for me.

“I sometimes take it to market for sale at N50 per small wrapper,” he said.

Rikici said that he got the seeds from Benin Republic.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Seme Command, said it repatriated 414 irregular immigrants in the first six months of the year.

The command’s spokesman , Yusuf Salman, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Seme that 159 Nigerians were also refused departure rights from Seme border during the period under review.

He added that 97,595 people arrived the country through the border with valid passports and complete documents.

“From January to June 2018, 97,595 people arrived through the border with valid passports, 60,621 of them were males while 36,974 were females.

“Also, 88,015 people, comprising 48,900 males and 39,115 females, left Nigeria through Seme border within the period,” he said.

Mr Yusuf also explained that 56 foreigners were refused entry permits through the border during the period.

He said the foreigners were from South Africa, Belgium, Congo, Kenya, Ghana, Australia, Brazil, Lebanon, Italy and India.

Mr Yusuf added that 250 Nigerians were also repatriated from other West African countries, particularly, Ghana, due to irregularities discovered in their travel documents.

He said the command received and rescued 65 victims of human trafficking.

“The suspects were arrested and handed over to the immigration service headquarters for further action,” he said.
