The abducted Igbo trader in Akure, the Ondo State capital Mr. Steven Eze, has escaped from the enclave of his captors inside an uncompleted building along Oda road in the outskirts of Akure.

Eze, who was known as a successful plumbing materials merchant and owner of N-Steve Plumbing Works in Arakale commercial area in Akure, was forcefully seized from his two-storey office complex beside a new generation Bank by a gang of armed men believed to be kidnappers, a week ago.

The kidnappers had been communicating with the Eze’s wife on the mobile phone of her husband, demanding a ransom of N50 million which was reduced to N3.8 million after marathon negotiations.

Before he successfully escaped from his abductors, on Monday night, fellow businessmen and Ndigbo in the state had been going around soliciting for financial assistance to raise a sum of N50 million, being the ransom demanded by his abductors.

A source closed to the embattled family revealed that Eze’s banker denied his wife access to the husband’s account which deprived him the opportunity of securing his freedom.

Mrs. Eze was reportedly told by the banker to seek help elsewhere, stressing that it was when and if only a death certificate of Mr.Eze is produced that the wife could withdraw money from the account.

Narrating his ordeal, Eze said his abductors took him to an uncompleted bungalow in the Kajola area of Oda road in the outskirts of the state capital.

He however broke the ceilings of the house and escaped through the roof when all the suspected kidnappers left handcuffed in search of food items

Eze said he ran into the house of one of his friends in the area, who later called in men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The police later protected him and trailed the kidnappers who had fled after Eze’s escapade.

Police public relation officer (PPRO), Adeniran Aremu confirmed the escape of the Igbo trader from the den of the kidnappers, stressing that men of SARS were on the trail of the kidnappers

It was a dark Thursday yesterday in Adazi Nnukwu as the community helplessly committed to mother earth 12 of its citizens mowed down in Mubi, Adamawa State on December 28, 2011 and January 6, 2012 by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

Sorrow, agony and anger was written visibly on the faces of the thousands of citizens whose tears surged like flood as the caskets bearing the remains of the 12 victims were laid at the St Andrews’ Catholic Church, Adazi Nnukwu field for funeral mass.

The victims buried yesterday which included 35 year-old Mrs Ukamaka Aforka who until her murder was a staff of federal Polytechnic, Mubi are, 42 years old Mr Amaechi Onwukaike, 16 year old Obinna Okoye Akukwe, 52 year old Mr. Osita Aforka, 45 year old Mr. Uchenna Okpala and 48 year old Mr. Ugochukwu Ezenwekwe.

Others were 62 year old John Obiakonwa, 49 year old Mr. Patrick Aghachi, 35 year old Mr. Job Mgbemena, 56 year old Mr. Bede Anagbado, 47 year old Simeon Asor and 54 year old Mr. Sunday Okoye.
By 8am the church field venue was already filled with people for the mass slated for 10am and security operatives had a herculean task controlling the crowd, majority of who were in all black attires.

Governor Peter Obi, the leader of Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh and Hon Uche Ekwunife led other Anambrarians and Ndigbo to the burial.
In his homily at the mass attended by over 100 priests, the Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Rev. Paulinus C. Ezeokafor warned that “enough is enough” of the senseless killing of innocent Nigerians especially Ndigbo, insisting that human life is sacred and must be respected.

He said, “We are gathered here with heavy hearts to commend into the Lord’s hands, 12 victims of senseless acts of violence that took place at Mubi, Adamawa State. Law abiding citizens of Nigeria, going about their legitimate businesses, were wantonly cut down by the assassins’ bullet in cold blood. Ten women were instantly made widows; scores of children rendered fatherless; a group of children lost both father and mother and untold hardship visited on countless other dependants whose breadwinners and lifelines were mowed down by those who ascribe to themselves the divine power of deciding who lives and who dies.

“The fact that all these victims are from one community, the Adazi-Nnukwu community, compounds the pain. As the chief shepherd of the flock of God in this diocese, I have come to condole with the families who lost their loved ones and with the entire Adazi- Nnukwu community for this great loss. I have come to mourn and pray with you for the repose of our brethren and to reflect with you, in the light of the Gospel, on the recent events in our country.

“Most countries in the world contend with natural disasters that take lives and damage properties. In Nigeria, what we face are mostly human disasters: human beings killing and maiming others for absolutely no just cause. The present human disaster in Nigeria is Boko Haram, an Islamic sect who claimed responsibility for the Christmas day bombing of St Theresa’s Church Madalla, Niger State, in which over 30 persons were killed and scores wounded. People who gathered to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ saw their joy turned into sorrow by reckless and lawless agents of hate and destruction. On Friday, January 20, 2012 the same group pulled off a coordinated bombing campaign in Kano which sent over 180 innocent Nigerians to their untimely death. We recall similar incidents of senseless killing in Borno, Bauchi, Kaduna, and Plateau States of Northern Nigeria.

“Faced with the events of the recent past, we are compelled to ask: when will all these barbaric, inhuman and animalistic behaviours end? What does the future hold for our dear country Nigeria? Who will save this country from an impending doom if the Boko Haram menace is not addressed decisively and very soon too? Where are our elected leaders into whose hands we have freely surrendered our live and properties? What are the security agencies doing to end this cycle of violence? Let our leaders and those entrusted with the security of the lives and properties of Nigerians remember that there continued failure in this regard will surely attract the wrath of God.

“Enough is enough! We cannot continue like this! Human life is sacred and must be respected. It is our responsibility to nurture and defend life and not to destroy it. Those charged with security in the land have to act fast to prevent the senseless shedding of human blood and the spread of pain, misery and hardship”.
In his speech at the funeral mass Governor Obi condemned the killing of his subjects who live in Mubi but urged the people to maintain peace.

He announced government scholarship for the children of the victims and N 1 million for each of the victims’ families as an initial package, just as he announced Adamawa State government’s initial package of N 1 million each for the victim families. Obi further said, “Though this affected many communities, Adazi-Nnukwu was the worst hit by the present unnecessary murder in a country that is supposed to always give protection to all of us. This murder diminishes our humanity. This indeed is a season of anomie.

“I am aware that some people have tried to compare this sad turn of events with what happened during the Nigeria civil war (1966-1967). I disagree. As opposed to what was the case in the wake of the Civil War, the Federal Government of today is responsive to the situation. At the same time, we should cast our eyes back to senseless killing in the past in countries like Sudan, Rwanda, Somali and Democratic Republic of Congo, among others. In all of these cases, the people only ended up diminishing their humanity and lowering their status as countries in the comity of nations. The same fate awaits us if we do not stop the present unwarranted killings.

“As we bury these brothers and sisters of ours, let us bear in mind that what their families need today is love, compassion and understanding. I have been informed of the difficulties some of their people encounter owing to the ugly situation. I assure them that the Anambra State Government will continue to assist them wherever she is supposed to do so. The victims were later buried at the church burial ground where again their family members especially wives and children cried their hearts out

Ambassador of the United States of America to Nigeria, Mr. Terence McCulley has said his country never predicted that Nigeria would break up by 2015 as earlier reported.

The envoy who was in Ibadan Thursday explained further that the prediction was done by a private agency that carried out a survey and not the US government as claimed by the report.

He said the US government considered Nigeria as a strategic partner in Africa adding that the role that Nigeria plays in peace keeping operation in the continent was very vital.
Describing the violent activities of Boko Haram sect as unfortunate, he said he was optimistic that it would soon be resolved going by the combined efforts of both Christian and Muslim youth to solve the problem.

To him, the issue of Boko Haram menace could be attributed to political rivalry between the North and the south stating that his country was playing a major role in checking the excesses of the sect noting further that with the sending of bomb technicians to Nigeria, it was indicative of the robust relationship between the two countries.

He added that corruption in the country was a fundamental problem which had created wide gaps between the people and government urging all tiers of government to ensure that the vice was tackled.
He advised that the government should strengthen all the relevant anti-corruption agencies and give them necessary backing to perform.

McCulley expressed earlier in his remarks that Nigerians exercised Freedom of Speeech and Expression last month when they spoke out to debate the decision to remove subsidy on gasoline.

“They did so peacefully, for the most part, from Lagos and Ibadan to Kaduna and Kano. And the Nigerian government, for the most part, protected its citizens’ right to speak out, and held accountable those who abused authority. This is a sign of democracy: people exercised a fundamental freedom, and the government listened”, he said.

He continued saying “Nigeria is also a country of diverse faiths, and Nigeria also drawa its strength from this diversity. In spite of this-perhaps because of it-some people seek to exploit religious differences in Nigeria.

But, many Nigerians have refused to let this happen. I am pleased to see ongoing interfaith dialogues among religious leaders. I was especially encouraged by reports of Christians protecting Muslims during Friday prayers during the protests against fuel subsidies and Muslims guarding Christian churches during Sunday services after the horrendous Christmas Day attacks. Efforts like these to promote a universal freedom of worship will help everyone prosper”.

“Nigerians have also voiced out the need for good jobs, schools, health care, and infrastructure. In fact, from the conversations and comments I heard during protests in January, many Nigerians seemed to say that they also wanted to enjoy this freedom from want. I am pleased that Nigerian government has responded by pledging to eliminate waste and focus on infrastructure projects that Nigerians need. This is also a sign of democracy” , he said.

A proposal by the Federal Government to expend an annual average of N27 million on each staff of the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, as personnel cost caused a stir at the National Assembly, yesterday.

Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison-Madueke, who led the DPR team and other agencies of the Ministry of Petroleum to the Senate defence hearing, however, assured that the government in a bid to curtail the burgeoning personnel cost was set to embark on a rationalization of its staff and agencies.

An estimated N30 billion of a total budget of N35 billion proposed for the DPR is earmarked for the department’s 1,100 staff.

A breakdown of the budget presentation tabled before the six committees of the National Assembly showed that of DPR’s N35, 997,149,841 budget, capital expenditure is only N4,786,302,790 while N31,210,847,051 will go to personnel costs and overheads. The budget estimate also indicated that personnel costs for DPR in 2012 is put at N30,399,182,331 while the remaining N811,664,720 is for overhead costs.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum (Upstream), Senator Paulker Emmanuel, while noting that the huge overhead costs in the petroleum sector was worrisome, stressed that the budgetary proposals of the agencies in the sector must focus towards the capital side as a way of enhancing value.

“I feel so worried as a Nigerian because if our budget is tailored towards that style, then, we are not creating hopes for investing in infrastructure and I hope you have noted that. I think there’s need for us to have a change and the oil industry is assumed to be a capital intensive industry.”

Addressing the Committees, Director of the DPR, Mr. Austin Olorunshola, however, said the department was about to recruit more staff within the next two weeks. It was, however, not clear if the new staff were factored into the 1,100 staff projected for in the budget.

Speaking further, Allison-Madueke told the joint committee that the executive branch was already working on rationalisation in all the Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

According to her, the purpose of the rationalisation was to merge some agencies and scrap others, adding that in the process, some members of staff would be laid off to reduce personnel and overhead cost of governance.

The Minister who said the situation with the recurrent expenditure profile of the DPR was symptomatic of the entire civil service in Nigeria.

“This is symptomatic of the entire federal civil service. It’s not solely in the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, it goes across the civil service but that is why Mr. President has called for a critical rationalization of the ministries, departments and agencies with a view to reducing the recurrent expenditure and overheads.”

Continuing, she said “the slight increase in DPR’s recurrent budget represents provisions for anticipated recruitment of new staff to improve the overall effectiveness of the department,” adding, “You will also notice that the PPPRA is cap

The Federal Government of Nigeria pays over N5 billion as school fees for children of Nigerian employees working in Nigerian foreign missions, according to a revelation at the House of Representatives Thursday.

The Foreign Affairs Ministry had earmarked the same figure in the 2012 budget proposal before the National Assembly.

Following the discovery, Foreign Minister, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru was grilled by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Hon. Nnena Elendu-Ukeje.

A bewildered Elendu-Ukeje expressed shock at the huge bill the ministry spends annually on school fees, adding that the ministry has a case to answer for the vague presentations to the National Assembly every year.

She noted that the Ministry normally brings a long list of beneficiary missions and the countries, but does not give a breakdown to show the names and number of benefiting children and the amount due to them.

The members of the committee also grilled the Minister over multiple security votes entries in its 2012 budget totalling almost N2 billion. According to Ukeje-Elendu, “You have put votes for security in four different places and that is the issue. You have four different sub-heads showing security votes. That is not acceptable.”

The Minister however said he would not want to discuss the issue of security in the open with the media in attendance.

Members of the committee also could not understand the reason why the ministry would spend over N2 billion on transport and travels for a course/study that costs less than N90 million.

But defending the expenditure, Ashiru said, “We travel to get the best. You need to get well-trained diplomats. Without training, you will not get good diplomats. Without training, there will be no results. We send some of them to Oxford, some to Italy as they will be competing with the best from the world,” the minister said.
