Education › Otedola Donates N2 Billion To Catholic's Augustine University, Lagos by HigherEd(op): 6:22am On Nov 28, 2018
Billionaire businessman and Chairman of Forte Oil, Femi Otedola, has donated a multimillion-naira complex to the Augustine University’s engineering faculty.

This was made known yesterday at a sod-turning ceremony to mark the first day of construction for the university’s faculty of engineering’s complex in Epe, Lagos State.

On hand for the occasion were the Proprietor of the institution and the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins; Otedola’s octogenarian mother, Lady Doja Otedola; the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the university, Sir Steve Omojafor; the Vice-Chancellor of Augustine University, Prof. Steve Afolami; a member of the fundraising committee, Chief Sena Anthony, among other dignitaries.

They all commended Otedola and his family for the financial assistance and otherwise they had rendered to the university from its conception to date.

Speaking during the event, Otedola said, like his father, he was passionate about education and development of the country.

“My father was very passionate about a university being built in Epe because he was very passionate about education. Rather than spend my money on building more houses or buying a jet for myself, I decided to spend the money to support this laudable cause by the Lagos Catholic archdiocese through the Augustine University,” the oil magnate told journalists.

Speaking about the importance of the building, Martins noted: “With this engineering faculty, we’re delighted that it’s taking off because it is one area that we think with the kind of technological development that Nigeria needs we can begin to find the realisation within that faculty – that’s not to say that the arts and the social sciences are not making contributions. We have had those contributions for many years. We are truly delighted that we have this beginning.”

He recounted how he was encouraged by former President Olusegun Obasanjo to donate towards the completion of the Ecumenical Centre in Abuja and the former president’s rejection of his desire to make a private donation.

“I went to his office; he had arranged for a press briefing and I said, ‘Please, let’s make this a private affair.’ But he insisted that he needed to make this public so that when the Dangotes and the Adenugas saw me contribute towards the building of the church they also would be encouraged to make similar donations.

“So, it is with this project – I want all my friends to know – because the hand of God is in it. It is a worthy cause. My mother persistently encouraged me to support the Augustine University project. Subsequently, I decided to build an engineering faculty for the university – which would be my home – for the glory of God. I can assure you that this project will be completed in good time,” Otedola explained.

The university which began operation in 2015, is already running at least eight courses subscribed to by 200 students up to 400-level.

Expressing their delight regarding the donation by Otedola, Afolami, Omojafor and Anthony stated that the business mogul had once again set a fine example for other philanthropists.

Sharing their sentiments, the billionaire’s mother, Lady Otedola, stated: “I think I’m the happiest person today and I’m sure I’ll always be happy. It is always on record that this Augustine University was meant to be built at Odo-Ragunsin. Sometime in 1994 my late husband, Sir Michael Otedola, was approached to make financial donation to them. He was able to help get this large parcel of land for the university through the supports of the then-Alara of blessed memory.

No those who proposed such earlier must be devils. So you know all these the power of humanitarianism yet seek to demean those who point it out earlier. Abi you just learnt it after much exposure to it recently. Na wa. Hope you will reread most of your earlier comments against those canvassing for same things and weep.
Only those who love the church are credible to criticize it. Not those who use condemnation to lure people away from Christ.
Every statement is as important as the inspiration that birthed it. If you catch the devil saying the truth, ignore it. When the devil said the truth at the garden of eden it was to ultimately destroy the human race. Eve thought she was having an honest conversation but she couldn't discern motivation and that caused tremendous harm. Jesus on his own temptation looked beyond the credible things the devil said and attacked his motivations.

Before i engage any body on matters relating to the church i discern their motivations. I only criticise the church where God and church lovers are in hope that it would spur us to become better.

NIGERIA HAS THE HIGHEST CHURCH ATTENDANCE IN THE WORLD

Bishop David Oyedepo

Statistics have it that Nigeria has the largest church attendance in the world.

Every Sunday:
Nigeria, 89% of Worshippers gather.
In USA, 42% of worshippers gather.
In UK, 27% of worshippers gather.

Every time the Church of God grows, God’s people and their levels change.
The destiny of this nation is in our hands.
Our prayers can shape any shapeless thing.
Our rising profile as the body of Christ shall add to the glory of this nation.

The largest employers of labour in Nigeria will rise from the Church.

BISHOP OYEDEPO CAUTIONS PASTOR PAUL AND BECKY ENENCHE

The greatest headache of the devil is the growth and expansion of the Church.
There is a deliberate plan by the gates of hell against the Church.
We must live a spiritual battle ready life.

When Israel was growing in number in the land of Egypt, all hell broke loose including killing of children.
That did not stop God.

For anybody to imagine that people gathered like this in those days was unthinkable.
Those days if ‘500’ people came to Church. We would say ‘the whole world came’.
Now if 1000 attend, some will say ‘this Church is not growing’.

However if you don’t celebrate God for one, you won’t see 2.
If you don’t celebrate God for 10, you never see 100.’
The Church is the light of the world and the greatest threat to the existence of darkness is light.
The greatest enemy of Church Growth is the devil himself.
1 Thessalonians 2:18
I release the supernatural Church Growth Grace on every Ministry and Denomination.

Whatever cannot stop the Church from praying cannot stop the Church from growing.

God hates waste! If he won’t fill this building, he won’t have built it.
God will fill it with your cooperation and participation.
The day you stop engaging the forces of Church Growth, God will stop.

Be careful with this pulpit.
Jealously guard the mandate of God upon your life.

It does not take time to scatter.
It only takes time to build.
Your Father (David Oyedepo) is on the go and he is still on the Go.

Be careful!

I know what God sent me and I am answerable to Him.
Canaanland is filled 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th times on Sundays.

Oh i see. I met with their student union president when they visited CU some months ago. Cute African American boy.
Was just wondering how CU would hv suspended me if i appeared with the guys curly hair, yet the officials were grinning left and right grin

Same way they turned a blind eye when arab and hausa girls came adorned with Hijab during hult prize.

Highered come and see, our school is going global.
There is a difference between student and guest. Personally, i don't have a problem with Muslim students wearing Hijab in a Christian university so far the permission was granted by the University not because of any grandstanding by MURIC and the likes. Christian universities in the West open themselves to diversity.

This is important because Christian universities are powerful tools for gospel outreach - some people only ever have the chance to encounter the Christian way on Christian campuses.

CU managed to make the campus uncomfortable for non christians thereby loosing the opportunity to evangelize. And what's the point i have met a number of Atheist in the school.

The missionaries of Old had Strategy the Churches of today lack it badly. Only the gospel of Christ can change Nigeria for better. Until we turn Boko fighters to jesus, then feed, educate and clothe the Almajiri and turn back south to reset all the malfunctioning Christians we have done nothing.

Can we the Church build world class IDPs in safe places in the North East, welcome the Muslim and Christian women - feed, clothe and educate their children and watch as loyalties shift from mohammed to Jesus. And more importantly they will shift their children's loyalty.

The Missionaries didn't succeed in Christian izing half the nation because they had better preachers than we have, but they succeeded because they treated ppl better than the indigenous gods. People weighed it, "A God that provides Education, Healthcare and claims to love me to a god that wants human blood and collects my tubers of Yam every season". Sure enough the illiterate idol worshippers abandoned their burdensome gods and followed Jesus.

The Church must begin to think and act strategically.

Education › North West Has The Least Number Of Private Universities - NUC by HigherEd(op): 11:14am On Nov 26, 2018
The North West region, despite having the highest population, has only two out of the 75 private universities in the country, the National Universities Commission (NUC) said yesterday.

The Executive Secretary, Professor Abubakar Rasheed, made the statement before presenting application forms to Alhaji Musa Majia, the promoter of Khadija University, the first private varsity in Jigawa State, at a brief ceremony in Abuja.

He said in spite of the fact that private universities compliment the efforts of the public, North West and North East regions have two private universities each out of a total of 75. South West has 33 private universities, South East 13, South South 14 and North Central 11.

He said the commission had recently completed the procedures for the approval of four additional private universities and their papers were forwarded to Federal Executive Council for approval.

He said there were about 2 million university students that represented only 1% of the Nigeria’s population.

Prof Rasheed called on the promoter to bring the strategic plan of the university to life. He said private universities should have higher quality than public ones “and we don’t expect a private university to recruit all kinds of teachers.”

In his remarks, Emir of Kazaure, Dr Najib Hussaini Adamu, said while government cannot fund education alone, private higher education was highly competitive.

He said though a university is not meant to be easy “we shall ensure that Khadija University is run efficiently.”

Jigawa State Governor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar represented by the Commissioner of Education, Hajiya Rabi Ishaq said government would support any effort in providing high quality education.

What is the difference between building industries for commercial purpose/gains and building schools for that?

There are a many other non-profit things the church can do to impact society other than the two for gains. Missionaries and apostles changed the world effectively without profit driven ventures. That's Christianity and the power of charity/humanitarianism that is missing (as its not the major practical focus) and limiting the ability of African Christianity to fundamentally improve/impact Africa. From where will/do people practically learn not to over clink to their gettings and reduce covetousness?

" If the church goes into establishing for profit companies, then the church may just lose it's focus" How come this does not apply to private schools they establish?
The private schools are not for profit but only charging the cost of education. Most church universities are the cheapest of private universities for what they offer. If profit was the motive, no one would be stupid enough to build a school.
I'm sure oyedepo is knowledgeable enough to realise that none of the top 500 richest people in the world are in the ranking because they own any university.
