I do not live in the UK… fortunately. I live and work in Nigeria.

This may be unpopular advice but UK is not an easy place to live. If you really want to go there, get a care job, there are some accredited institutes in Nigeria where you can obtain an NVQ. Get this certificate and it will improve your chances. How you get to the UK is a different case but with an NVQ you may be able to find a company that will sponsor your visa especially if you have a level 2 or 3.

I have never needed a visa to travel but my wife does. She was recently rejected even though all supporting documents were present.

The grounds for rejection were based on the opinion of the entry clearance officer. They felt she wasn’t being honest and traveled for the purpose of giving birth. They also claimed we hadn’t paid the NHS for the delivery. Lastly, they stated that she hid the fact that I was a British citizen in her application and therefore decided she wasn’t a genuine visitor and was not intending to return. There was no right of appeal or administrative review so it seemed we had no choice but to accept it.

I contacted a couple of UK based immigration lawyers but they are all cowboys and wanted to bill a consultation fee. I wasn’t ready for that . So I searched on the internet and found a complaints website. I filled in a form complaining about the rejection and how they have denied my wife a visa and by extension my daughter who is a British citizen. I pointed out the errors of the entry clearance officer and told them of my intention to take them to court. They replied and reversed the decision and stated they would look at the application again. A few weeks later she got a call from the High commission to submit her passport and was issued a 2-year visa.

You have ECOs who if they are having a bad day, will reject you even if you have all your documents. Unfortunately these days, they do not give right to appeal so you have no choice but to apply again. If you however feel that the decision was wrong, you can always complain to the Home Office. Maybe I was fortunate cos I hold a UK passport and I filed the complaint but who knows… you maybe lucky.

Coming from a guy who applied for a visa to the German Embassy thrice and got denied twice at the German consulate in Lagos.

I withdrawed the last application at the German Consulate in Amsterdam when I was studying in the Netherlands.

Applied to the Embassy of the Netherlands, got their MVV Visa. Lived there for 2 years.

Today I now base in the United States of America.

I remember how tears filled my eyes in 2019 after my first visa application denial by the German Consulate in Lagos

Sometimes its God preventing you from poorly timed moves. In my case I graduated 2004, applied for US visa twice in two years and was denied . I applied for Canada visa 3 times during COVID lockdown and was denied. Now I have applied for UK visa and was granted but I'm not in a hurry to go.
I have a job with valuable experience here. I will only move when I'm assured of a better standard or better level abroad.

A lot of Nigerians are struggling a road. I hear some students sleep in library due to accomodation issues after arrangements for proof of funds. One mid level IT guy in my former offices now in UK and I as told he is cleaning stadiums after matches because he hasn't found a job

This is the best comment I have read on this topic. Oga, what about graduates that are jobless in Nigeria and they get the UK Visa? Shouldn't they go and do the cleaning? Instead of sitting down at home in Nigeria. I am a graduate and I am jobless. If I know who will help me move out of Nigeria, you think I won't go? It's even because of lack of resources that I haven't had the chance to apply to any of these Western countries.

Am telling you. Even their farmlands look like deserted grasslands. If you have never been tbere before, you wouldn't know which place is better. No forests as seen along lagos ibadan Expressway except govt reserves, with tight security lol. They treat plants like human. I've travelled across the world, even dat Germany sef I don wake. No place like home guy. With good leadership in place, everyone would return home.
