larride: Going by your logic, during the global crisis in 2008, how come only big corporation get bail out and other small businesses are left to either survive or close up? Of the businesses in America, big corporations represent 15% or even lesser, why do they deserve bail out when they run into crisis and the other 85% businesses doesn’t? One thing you don't realise is that big companies, especially financial service companies will pass on the pain to small companies and individuals if not bailed out. If Govt underwrites an insurance company or fortifies their balance sheet, they can then go ahead and pay claims to millions of small businesses and individuals without trying to dodge claims. In a crisis, you bail out the big and suspend rates/tax on the small, give them grants/loans etc I bought redundancy insurance before this Covid crisis. I well know that the only thing that holds my payment secure if shït goes left is the assurance that UK chancellor has been giving to these companies. Infact by Boris Johnson shütting down Britain, he immediately triggered millions of claims of businesses on their insurers. The Insurers well know that he will bail them out if those claims overwhelm them so will pay out on the claims. Same way the UK chancellor brought laws to give citizens mortgage break for 3 months. That's 3 months of cash flow he has taken away from the big banks and it is well understood that he will bail them out if need be. The 2008 financial crisis taught us that the best way to help the small man is to bail out the big financial institutions. It affects our pensions, 401k, job security, loan interest rates, equity value etc. |

France tried something like that in the 1980s. They called it the Solidarity Tax on Wealth. It was an annual direct wealth tax on those with assets exceeding €1.3 million.
They have reversed it today. Why? It drove away a lot of wealthy people from France. About 843 people left France because of it. And you know what? It cost France an estimated loss of €2.8 billion.
They are are still regretting it till date. They lost taxes that could have been theirs. They lost employment that was meant for their citizens. Etc. Etc.
Learn from history.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solidarity_tax_on_wealth Francoise Hollande tried to up tax to 80% for the wealthiest and Frances richest people started leaving. That didn't last long. I am not against taxing the rich more, but you must strike a balance between your countries socio-cultural outlook to taxation and what other countries are taxing them at in order to keep them in your country. I think the prevalent 40-50% in most large developed economies is about right. |

They are many ways of shrinking the possibility of billionaires and wealth distribution either by taxing them very HIGH or creating a policy that require them to give employees a certain amount of stocks so that the workers can benefit from their own hard work. Now you are backtracking.Taxation has always been a means of wealth redistribution under the Capitalist system. That's why we have different tax brackets. The tax bracket for the wealthy in most developed countries is nearing 50%. Would you rather they pay 80%. This method is failing by the way due to globalisation. USA is one of the best at enforcing by ensuring their citizens pay tax on worldwide Revenue regardless of their country of residence, whereas European countries generally tax based on your country if residence which is why the likes of Lewis Hamilton moved to Switzerland rather than pay UK tax rates. Eduardo Saverin, one of the founders of Facebook gave up his American citizenship after Facebook IPO and moved to Singapore. He could no longer be an American if he refused to pay tax to America. Your second point is bullcrap. No country can force you to give percentage of shares to employees, and certainly beyond foolish if the intended aim of such law is to stop you becoming a billionaire. |

Melvyn11: Shut it. Sharing stocks among employees made ordinary people millionaires in Microsoft. That's an example of wealth distribution. Your idea of liquidating all the billionaires was stupid. I brought you an idea that actually worked in wealth distribution and you still chatting Crabs. You have nothing to say. Most companies have share options as loyalty bonus for employees currently, so what is your problem with the current system. This is capitalism my friend. Microsoft has to buy those employees skills with share options otherwise they can go work for IBM. Those employees have a skill they are selling and they sold that skill at a price that suits them. Their talent or invention earned them money, same as Bill Gates invention earned him money like Raumdeuter was telling you earlier? How does that equate to seizing billionaires assets? Why should I start a business knowing that if my business blow, Govt will seize it and give it to any Okoro or Ekaite I employed. How would economy grow if no one starts business because of that. Are you well so? You are a child. |

Melvyn11: You don't have to seize or liquidate all their stock . You can easy redistribute the wealth by sharing the stocks amongst the employees. The average worker is only getting paid a fraction of the value they create (for the company, and the world). Getting stock in a successful company can be a great way to lift people up economically. Look at all of the employees at Microsoft (not executives, just normal people) who became millionaires as their shares gained value. Only among the employees? And what of the 90% of citizens who don't work in a Billionaires company? Your ideas are half-baked, infantile, gobbledygook. |

Melvyn11: All billionaires asset are not being seized. Your scenario doesn't hold water. Every billionaire can show you 100million if not more at any given day. How do you redistribute wealth from billionaires if not seizing all assets at the same time? Or is it only Bezos that you will seize? Or maybe you plan to do it turn by turn. And other billionaires will stand like odē and pay money to buy Bezos' shares knowing their turn is coming? There are 3 major reasons for increase in supply of money in USA for example the last decade that have seen share prices rise 1. Obama printing $2trillion dollars during 2008 crisis put more money supply in the system 2. Foreign Direct Investment 3. American companies remitting money gained in other countries back to America. Start nationalising billionaire assets and those share prices will fall steeply for 2 reasons a.) Foreign Direct Investors will withdraw back to their own countries reducing money supply available to liquidate assets at a fair price b.) By taking out billionaires from demand-side, you reduce market participants and the percentage of money supply available for buying these assets. When one man's assets are liquidated, another man's cash must be illiquidated at the same rate to hold the same value of assets. You dey yarn opata. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Official Chelsea Fan Thread: Club World Cup Champions 2025-2029 by Ibime(m): 8:37pm On Mar 24, 2020 |
Melvyn11: The point is all those billionaires that have 10%, 16% or even 2 percent of shares in trillions or multi billionaire companies can get their hands of millions anytime they want. Bezos who has 16% shares of Amazon which is a trillion dollar company can get his hands on 10billion dollars if he wants at anytime. Bezos wife already sold some of her shares and pocketed 400million at once. They can liquidate any time they need cash. Supply of money in a system is fairly fixed at any one time and defined by currency in circulation plus bank deposits. Because Bezos liquidated, you don't understand that other rich people or institutions had to give up liquidity to allow Bezos cash out, and supply of money in the system remains the same. Let all Billionaires assets be seized and put on market at the same time, let's see if there is enough supply of money from non-billionaires to liquidate them at a fair value. You cannot take demand out a market and expect value to hold, simples. You dey yarn opata. |

Melvyn11: John Bezos liquidate 1 billion every year for blue origin. Few months ago he liquidated 2.8 billion from his shares in one week. They can liquidate any time they want flow of cash. Billionaires diversify and sell stock almost every chance they get, and they don’t live their lifestyle with just a few million of liquidity. Keep believing super stories from musk Just like you can liquidate your car but if Govt is chasing you for debt, you will give them the car rather than liquidate and they will sell it for fraction of it's worth. Let Govt start chasing all Billionaires for their assets, let's see if Govt can liquidate. You think someone else will put money for those shares knowing Govt can take it any time? You can ask Fidel what he gained in value from appropriating privately held assets in Cuba. You cannot take demand out of any market and expect to hold the same value. Ask Mugabe in Zimbabwe |

By taking his shares and giving them to people who won't know what to do with the company, severely demotivating Bill Gates to keep progressing the company at the same time. If not that Bill Gates is divesting to invest in charities, I doubt most of these billionaires can show you $100m in cash on a good day. |

wman: Why do these people even think these billionaires have all these billions in their account?
Do they even understand the concept of net worth?
That Bill Gates is worth $100 billion does not mean that he has $100 billion in his account. Most of his wealth is tied up in stocks.
Your net worth is far more than the N500,000 in your account. It consists of your cars, your investments, your houses, your convertible skills, your stocks, your 401k, your retirement funds etc.
If you're a musician, your music catalogue and popularity will make up the bulk of your net worth.
You can have a net worth of $50 million and not have a single dime in your bank accounts. You might even be in severe debt.
So, how do you redistribute net worth to others? Those who've never made money will not know what you are saying oga. Remember that British guy that Elon Musk called "pedo guy". The guy sued Elon Musk for some millions and Elon told the court that he doesn't have it, that more than 99% of his worth is illiquid, and he has regular debt servicing to pay out sef. |

I have seen Socialism from a distance and experienced Capitalism,
If you are familiar with Olympics boxing you will know how good Cubans are at Boxing, I grew up watching people like Felix Savon and Casamayor dominating Olympics and winning medals, They will get home and Cuban govt will give them a bicycle, today most of them are so poor they have sold their Olympic medals to feed their family.
Look at their American counterparts like Wilder and Mayweather some didn't even win a medal at Olympics but are now millionaires
The younger Cuban boxers that still have energy paid boats to ship them to the US where they can escape that curse of Socialism Those who despise capitalism would not want to live in Cuba. As an example, Cuban doctors earn $25 a month while a normal civil servant earns $20. This is in Cuban convertible pesos. To keep the doctors satiated, the Govt let's them travel out for 5 years to make money in France etc. Otherwise the doctors told me they would rather work as bartender, because the little one-one dollar tip the bartenders get from foreign tourists easily adds up to like $20 a night which is almost the monthly salary of a doctor. Imagine studying medicine for 7 years only to aspire toward bartender work. That's a messed up system. Funny enough, most of the bar tender jobs are given to badged communist party officials. Capitalism remains the best system but the Covid crisis reminds us that there are some key industries each Govt should have control of. With India banning export of paracetamol for example, we have run out of paracetamol in the UK. Boris Johnson begging Jaguar Land-Rover to repurpose their factories to make Ventilators also proves this point. As does Angela Merkel stopping the export of millions of masks to Austria at the border. State directed Chinese construction company was able to build two 1,000 bed hospitals in a week each. Africans now are looking for thermometers and certain items but cannot get it from China at this moment. After this crisis, we will start to see Govts taking key stake in certain sectors of the economy that determine their ability to respond to a crisis, from food security to healthcare to military production. |
