This is very welcome news for frequent flyers like myself. Those of you calling it media hype are missing the point. The simple point is fares covering trips between Nigeria and England are way overpriced,especially comparing fares with similar and longer distances to other countries!!!
It has f*@k all to do with landing slots and infrastructure like some here are suggesting.

How can you justify the fact that it costs me between £200 - £250 "LESS" to visit my siblings in the West coast of U.S (Oregon) where i change 3 planes and do almost 18hrs flying time. Whereas a trip from London to Abuja is just under 7hrs.

Basically what the Nigerian govt does with the payments(if they are made) is irrelevant,what is important is the fact that someone has recognised that we have been collectively ripped off for way too long. At the very least it will force the airlines to offer more competitive prices.
Economically speaking Nigeria is holding the Ace card here because these airlines have far more to lose,with potentially 1,000s of job losses and lost income from the very lucrative route. God punish them let them pay up,for me it's like a personal victory.

If we are talking about the same ARIK that I had the misfortune of flying for the first time 2 days ago, then I anticipate that is is only a matter of time before they will be the ones locking up the place and handing back the keys.

On the way out there was no entertainment system for the whole of the flight
Crap food - and for me to complain about food then it means that it is really bad cos I am not a fussy eater.
Limited drinks
non chalant cabin crew and they didn't look like people I could trust to handle an emergency. They didn't seem to get on with each other and oozed zero confidence.
The only plus going for them was that we left slam on time & their higher than average luggage allowance

On the way back we boarded late and into a boiling plane because according to them the air conditioning system only worked with the engines switched on and the engines cant be switched on because the pilot was stuck in traffic.

We were left on the plane in terrible conditions with kids crying and people sweating for half an hour and with no cold water.

Again no entertainment system for the whole of the flight
Cabin crew looked rather thin on ground and I counted only about 8 of them looking after the whole plane
Crap food
Limited drinks
very slow/non existent service - ask them for water or a blanket and they never come back and it took them 45 minutes after we had finshed eating for them to pack up the trays.

Will I ever fly ARIK again? even if they slashed their prices by half and doubled their baggage allowance -  The answer is a CAPITAL NO

whats with this excuse of them forgetting the Entertainment system, all the time, same excuse, bn going on now for over 7 to 8 months.

A few of my staff had something to do with Arik in Nigeria and so flew Arik to Abuja to tie up the loose ends of the deal.

The flight said Arik to Lagos, you wont believe mid air the pilot suddenly said on the PA system, we will be stopping over in Abuja to drop some passeangers. Thank you.

Yes they did and guess what no one disembarked, they actually picked up 4rm people from Abuja and then took them to Abuja.

I just hope this fight by the FG is not really for Arik but on a principle basis that the other Airlines should stop fleecing us with high fares, Nothing more,

i dont believe a company should be told what price to sell their goods in a free market economy. why cant the aviation minister as a matter of national interest; help or facilitate a system that will enable Arik and Air Nigeria improve their services to the point where the thousands of Nigerians who fly the 21 BA flights weekly to and Fro UK will switch carriers?

if Arik and AirNigeria offer services that are at par wit BA at a cheaper cost, there will be no discussion
