Nairaland / General / A Nairalander's Letter To Nigeria On Her 53rd Ind. Anniversary by Ifems(m): 5:39am On Oct 01, 2013
Dear Nigeria,
Happy Birthday to you, my one and only country Nigeria .In you i trust, my only hope ,in Sickness and in Health. The only country that will accept me for who i am, what i am and what i do, no matter what I do you treat with loving kindness ,even when you spank, you do it with so much humour that It tastes bitterly sweet.
Nigeria, dear country, you're are the only place i call my home ,you made me and I will stay in you to make you proud, prouder than you are already, the pride of Africa, the giant of Africa, the world’s most populous black nation...I hail thee!

Naija, though some people might have written you off, saying that you have no hope ,that you are one of the greatest disappointments of the black race, that you happen to have one of the most maternal mortality rates, that you have the world’s most corrupt rulers, that you are only a consumer, a poverty stricken nation, that you have nothing to for at 53.Some even went to the extent of saying that you’ll be completely annihilated in two years time, imagine. My dear Nigeria what have they turned you to, a monument of ridicule, anybody can come into you, exploit, devastate, rape you, make money from you and will have the temerity to talk rubbish to the whole wide world about you, therefore writing you off.Though I must not deny that some of your sons and daughters are part of them. But, I want to ask, WHAT DO THEY KNOW

I ask again, WHAT DO THEY KNOW?, what do they to talk trash about you?...They don’t know that, on no account must you write off anybody on the face of this planet earth, never should one commit such act, thus they defile one of fundamentals of mother earth. Do they know that you have the potential to cause a huge mental revolution in Africa ,which will affect the world in general? ,ask them if they know how America started ,do they know that Japan, was not this great in the beginning?, Please tell them the history of the world’s most powerful countries. They compare you to Singapore, Malaysia and Dubai, they do not know that no two destiny are the same yet again.

1. Nigeria is home to seven percent (7%) of the total languages spoken on earth. Taraba state alone has more languages than 30 African countries. The importance of this fact is appreciated when one understands that language is the “soul of culture” (as Ngugi wa Thiongo famously said). It is language that births the proverbs, riddles, stories and other aspects of culture that give us identity. UNESCO puts forward that the world’s languages represents an extraordinary wealth of creativity. Linguistic diversity correlates with cultural diversity. This means Nigeria can look inwards and drive itself to become the greatest hub for cultural tourism on earth, and consequently empower its citizens tremendously in the process.

2. The Walls of Benin (800-1400AD), in present day Edo State, are the longest ancient earthworks in the world, and probably the largest man-made structure on earth. They enclose 6500 square kilometers of community lands that connected about 500 communities. At over 16000km long, it was thought to be twice the length of the Great Wall of China, until it was announced in 2012 (after five years of meticulous measurement by Chinese surveyors) that the Great Wall is about 21,000km long.

3. The Yoruba tribe has the highest rate of twin births in the world. Igbo-Ora, a little town in Oyo state, has been nicknamed Twin capital of the World because of its unusually high rate of twins that is put as high as 158 twins per 1000 births. In a video I watched last year on YouTube presented by Titi (a white lady who speaks Yoruba), and which was centred on twin births in Igbo-Ora, one of the locals boasted that every family in the town has at least one twin!

4. Sarki Muhammad Kanta The Great of Kebbi, was the only ruler who resisted control by Songhai, West Africa’s greatest empire at that time. He founded and ruled the Hausa city-state of Kebbi around 1600 A.D and built Surame its capital, a planned city which was almost impossible to penetrate during war. In fact UNESCO describes Surame as “one of the wonders of human history, creativity and ingenuity”, and probably the most massive stone-walled constructions in West Africa. He is listed in Robin Walker’s 50 Greatest Africans.

5. Africa’s oldest known boat is The Dufuna canoe which was discovered in Dufuna village, Yobe state, by a Fulani Herdsman in May 1987, while he dug a well. Various radio-carbon tests conducted in laboratories of reputable universities in Europe and America indicate that the canoe is over 8,000 years old, thus making it the oldest in Africa and 3rd oldest in the world. The discovery of the canoe has completely changed accepted theories of the history and sophistication of marine technology in Africa.

6. Sungbo’s Eredo, a 160 km rampart equipped with guard houses and moats, is reputed to be the largest single pre-colonial monument (or ancient fortification if you like) in Africa. It is located in present-day Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State and when it was built a millennium ago, it required more earth to be moved during construction than that used for building the Great Pyramid of Giza (one of the Seven Wonders of The Ancient World). The most astonishing thing is that Sungbo’s Eredo was the biggest city in the world (bigger than Rome and Cairo) during the Middle Ages when it was built!

7. Sarki Abdullah Burja of Kano (ruled 1438-1452 AD), the 18th ruler of Ancient Kano, created the first Golden Age in Northern Nigeria and ushered in a period of great prosperity. During his reign, Hausa became the biggest indigenous language spoken in Africa after Swahili. He is on the list of 50

Greatest Africans in Robin Walker’s wonderful book, “When We Ruled”.

8. The Jos Plateau Indigobird, a small reddish-brown bird, is found nowhere else on the planet but Plateau state, Nigeria.

9. The Anambra waxbill, a small bird of many beautiful colours, is found only in Southern Nigeria and nowhere else on earth.

10. The Niger Delta (which is the second largest delta on the planet), has the highest concentration of monotypic fish families in the world, and is

also home to sixty percent of Nigeria’s mangrove forests. You should know too that Nigeria’s mangrove forests are the largest in Africa and third largest on earth.

11. According to the World Resources Institute, Nigeria is home to 4,715 different types of plant species, and over 550 species of breeding birds and mammals, making it one of the most ecologically vibrant places of the planet.

12. Ile-Ife, in present day Osun State, was paved as early as 1000AD, with decorations that originated from Ancient America suggesting there might have been contact between the Yorubas and the Ancient Americans half a millenium before Columbus ‘discovered’ America.

http://thenationonlineng.net/new/online-special/12-shocking-facts-about-nigeria/

Nigeria, please ask them if they know the law of peculiarity ,which states ‘that natural things may look alike but it can never act or behave exactly the same’ .This simple law of nature is what they have failed to comprehend ,and understand yet they utter despicable things with their mouth and gesture, that made one to visit you with a T shirt embedded ‘PURELY HELL’. She called you hell, yet you paid her flight ticket , welcomed her honourably, quenched her thirst, fed her, sheltered her .All this you did with great magnanimity and benevolence. A Proof that she does know nothing about you.

The whole world doesn’t know that there is no word like’ impossible’ in your dictionary.Anything can happen within you. This, they see daily,by the zealousness of your children to survive ,even in the harshest of climate ,weather, condition or what so ever. The determination of your offspring makes them flabbergasted ,They are always in awe, when they see the raw striving nature of a Nigerian ‘pikin’, the temerity, the perseverance, that strong will for success keeps them in a constant state of consternation. Because this, they have never seen in anybody except in a person called ‘Nigerian’. Probably that person is there selling them snow in winter .Even if it is an Igbo man .Alas! I see light at the end of the tunnel.

One thing I have learnt in my not too long number of years in life’s training ,is that a man should not despise his days of little beginning ,because, there lie his strength .That when things are going out of proportion, you should look back to those good old days, remember it, smile, get that inner strength ,dust your ass, with that which you have garnered, you can be able to climb to the highest summit. An unlimited summit that no man can ever imagine ,which knows no bound. One Holy book told me that if one connects to his creator, that greater things are ahead.

I therefore call on all Nigerian Tribe, Pagan ,Christian, Muslim, Jew ,Atheist(if there’s any) to help you achieve this ’NIGERIAN DREAM’ built on hard work, transparency, healthy competition and persistence. I want you to stand up, heads raised, shoulders high and prove them wrong. With your strength in population as sword and abundant natural resources as your shield.

On this ,I EMEKA VICTOR IFEMENAM pledge unto thee that I will withhold your honour and glory. Promise to work tirelessly to ensure that your hope does not fade away, with the vision your nationalists as my guide.Always working to keep you united .This I will do through, innovative brainstorming, obedience to your rules and laws, thinking of what I will do for you than the contrary ,because, for any peaceful co-existence, it should be 90% giving and 10% receiving.
So help me God.Amen.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY and LONG LIVE NIGERIA!!!

Phones / Re: What Happened To Blackberry? by Ifems(m): 2:44pm On Sep 24, 2013
The only thing that happened to Blackberry is that they lacked innovation. In the beginning, they were the trend, the first to introduce the QWERTY button phones which actually got and wooed the market. So when they got the market, they went to sleep oblivious of the world's constant and rapid change, then the innovators came, and saw opportunity,an idea which they capitalized on with immediate effect. Then the RIM (blackberry) people woke up,tried as much as they could to resurrect but it was almost impossible. So they introduced their BBM but only targeted it to the emerging economies like Africa and Nigeria which is a good market spot but not a major market, but still did not do much innovation. They went back to sleep yet again and when they woke up,it was almost impossible for them to get back in the game.
And,now they've finally decided to annihilate the company by Introducing their BBM to their major competitors, cutting down 45%(4500) of their workforce and announcing a 995 million USD loss.
So in life,we should know that change is the only constant thing and in the information age,the world is changing rapidly,so rapid.

A woman who was raped nko? A mother whose life is gonna be endangered if she becomes pregnant? A baby who is a sickler nko?
...So because that baby is a sickler is why you would waste a life abi?I know a friend that is a sickler yet he is doing great now,in good health.By saying endanger, she can still deliver through C.S...And the raped woman, she should keep it for morals sake.Remember these innocent souls never begged for life, they just came.Victims of circumstance.By terminating them, you've annihilated God's perfect plan.A bible verse will say,'Before you're born i knew who you were'.Think of it.
Family / Re: Abortion: Murder Or A Means Of Birth Control? by Ifems(m): 12:53pm On Sep 20, 2013
ifyalways: Abortion is a means of birth control,IMO. If "its" unwanted, unloved and unplanned for,let it go.
I knew it is only the ladies that will disagree that it is murder.I wonder why one would say that abortion is not murder. You said when it is unplanned abi?Let me ask,Did you not plan for it when the guy was toasting you? When he started washing your head, from you're looking good today TO going on a date TO what is your likes TO the movies you like TO how you spent your last vacation TO the type of friends you keep TO smooshing TO kissing TO taking off the clothes TO the taking away the inner wear and TO the final act?Did you not know that there is something called protection?...It pisses me off when we use flimsy and silly excuses to define our actions.
