Thanks but i feel really terrible today as i slept yesterday on the bad news on the Abuja bombings. I am hoping no has done this in the name of islam that is my hope. Although, no one has claimed responsibility, loads of people have blamed it on the same people that bombed jos. Till there is a clain of responsibility, i will keep mute for now.

I know how u feel but its only an uninformed person that wud believe totally that it was masterminded by Muslims.

I am dating a Nigerian guy; we've been together 8.5 years.  We both want to marry each other, but we are experiencing some resistance from his side of the family.  His parents do not have anything personal against me, I am just not the ideal match for their (first born) son.  I am white, I am not Nigerian and I'm from a completely different country/culture than they are.

I have met his parents, as well as extended family members.  I send gifts back to them for holidays, birthdays and for no reason at all.  I speak to them on the phone as often as I can and I've hosted them when they came to visit us.

His parents feel that I am too old for him (we're the same age, they want him to marry someone younger than him).  They want him to be with a Nigerian girl, which I completely understand, because I know how important a role being the first son is.

We love each other very much and want to be together.  He speaks to his parents about me, but neither of us want to put any pressure on them to give us their blessing, for fear they will disown him.  We want to allow them time to get used to the idea that I am not going anywhere, but again, it's been 8.5 years. 

My question is what else can I do to earn their approval so that we can be married?  I am trying to be the best (almost) Niger-wife I can be, but it's hard.

If the guy wants to marry you,he shld have done so regardless of what his family syas or thinks,moreover its not even like u are going to be staying with his folks.
If they have refused to accept you for 8.5 years,when do u think they wud bend?when u date their son for  18.5 years?
You can however hang on,if u don't wanna get married or u ok with being his mistress or long term GF.

The society has been living with this great misconception of love.We all assume/expect to have/see certain things before we know we are in love. . . Not so true.
Love means different things to different ppl.
@OP,you love you wife . . .u just have not realized that or u think otherwise cos what u feel for her does not fit-in to what is generally defined as love.
Back to your question,love is not the only or major ingredient for a successful marriage and like Zayhal said,love also grows and increases with time.
