Autos › Re: Traffic On The Third Mainland. by igbsam(m): 11:54pm On Aug 09, 2011
NaijaNile:
I have thought about this problem many times too. Im my opinion, there are many factors causing the traffic:

1. Too many cars on the road - How many vehicles do you see going and comng from the island with only 1 or 2 people in them?
2. Believe it or not, most lagosians only know how to move a car but have absolutely no knowledge of traffic rules. Most of us learnt how to drive from our parents mechanics or friends or older siblings and so didnt learn traffic rules. That explains why someone coming form the island and going to Gbagada/Anthony/Maryland axis will be on the leftmost lane coming from the island and at the end of the bridge attempt to move over to the other right most lane to go to Gbagada. Multiply that by 1000 cars and you can imagine the effect.
3. Bad roads - the bad spot at ogudu used to cause traffic too, but since that has been fixed there is no issue here anymore. so the next spot is Alapere, from 3rd mainland (3/4 lanes) everyone now entering 2 lanes
4. Trucks: For the love of me, i can never understand why these moving death traps move during day/time or when people are supposed to be returning from work. What is difficult in passing a law that trailers should only move in that axis from 11pm till 5am?
5. I have also wondered why we cant think outside the box, going to the island in the morning, there is heavy traffic jam on the inward route and the other side (outbound) is EMPTY!!!. What is wrong in utilizing the entire bridge as inbound from between 6am - 9am and then releasing the outbound from 9am? people coming to the mainland can use carter or eko bridge, leaving one of eko or carter for ppl coming from surulere and those other axis? we can do the reverse in the eveing during close of work as well, all we need is to have proper traffic control at points where there could be problems.
You took that thought outta ma head. I was thinking the same thing. Bless u. I think this would be a preferred solution to ease the congestion of going to the island. At the other hand, how about returning back from the island ?

Nairaland General › Sharp Rise In Young Women Taking Cocaine by igbsam(op): 10:01am On Jul 27, 2011
Cocaine use among women rises steeply
Aussies fail to change risky drinking habits
Smoking rates have fallen, big win for health

WE'VE got the message about smoking but we're refusing to change our risky drinking habits and we have an increased appetite for drugs.
The mixed picture of drinking and drug use is revealed today in the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's National Drug Strategy Household Survey, which shows that cocaine use among young women has shot up in the last three years.

According to the survey, one in twenty women aged 20 to 29 have taken cocaine recently.
The number of women who have used a dealer to buy cocaine has increased since 2007, which suggests that women are actively seeking out the drug.
The study also found that cocaine use was still higher among men but the increase in their use was less steep.
Ecstasy use declined for the first time since 1995, with cocaine now the drug of choice among educated, high-earners.
Drug use was up, with 14.7 per cent of Australians aged 14 and over having taken something in the past 12 months - a jump from 13.4 per cent in 2007.
Encouraging news

Health organisations failed to make a dent in the number of people drinking more than four alcoholic drinks in a session at least once a month. One in five drank an average of more than two standards drinks in a day - that figure hasn't changed in three years.
But alcohol consumption dropped among teenagers aged 12 to 17.
The survey of 26,000 people did provide encouraging news for anti-smoking campaigners.
The proportion of people aged 14 and over smoking daily is 15.1 per cent, down from 16.6 per cent three years ago and 25 per cent in 1993.
The biggest declines in daily smoking are among people in their early 20s to mid-40s, but for over-45s the proportion remained relatively stable, and for some age groups increased slightly.

"This . . . is encouraging, as tobacco smoking is the single most preventable cause of ill-health and death," AIHW spokesman Brent Diverty said yesterday.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Man. Utd Fan Gets Bullied Out Of Liverpool Match In Malaysia. Praised By Rooney! by igbsam(op): 10:34pm On Jul 19, 2011
A fan who dared enter a stand full of Liverpool supporters wearing a Manchester United shirt with Wayne Rooney's name on the back in Malaysia was goaded until he had to leave – but then praised for being a ‘legend’ by the player himself.

The shirt couldn't really have been a worse choice, given that Rooney plays for the Reds' bitterest rivals and is famously a boyhood fan of their city neighbours Everton.

But that didn't stop him wading into a stand, brazenly showing off his colours, to watch the Anfield side in training on their Far East tour.
Unsurprisingly the young man was baited into removing the offending shirt by about 1,000 Malaysians.

And although he eventually succumbed to chants of ‘buka, buka!’ (take it off) - when his rivals' gear was forced on him, it proved too much.
The youngster - who definitely looked old enough to know better - sat and sulked for a few painful seconds before deciding enough was enough, and bolted through the Kop faithful to the nearest exit door.

But, in the end, he may have thought the humiliation was worth it when Mr Rooney himself cited him on his Twitter account.
'The lad who went to watch Liverpool train in mufc top with my name on the back is a legend,' the man himself wrote to his 1million or so followers.

I had my car snatched from me at gun point in lagos and taken to PH. by the mysterious ways of God, someone who has not seen d car before, sighted it cos i posted it on fb dat my car has been stolen and the picture and number of the car was on fb. Someone saw d car with the robbers in it, he immediately informed the police men and they were rounded up with the car after enough sporadic shooting. Trust Naija police na, they released all the robbers and were asking me to come pay some cash to get my car. I didn't appear, had to send some naval officers to go get it for me while i remain in lagos. I learnt those guys paid N2m to get themselves released and this idiots are still asking me to pay them for the bullets they used. Mschewwwwwwwwww! I still dont understand how these guys drove the car to d extent d damage was much. Even d back bumper was no where 2 be found.

Car Talk › Re: Ever Had Your Vehicle Stolen, Or Broken Into? by igbsam(m): 12:51am On Jul 15, 2011
I was double crossed at gun point with 5 car robbers surrounding me ordering me to get down along lagos abeokuta express way, Not knowing wat to do, i didn't know where the boldness came, hoping to see how active my v6 engine is, I put the car on reverse crushing the robber standing at the back of my car cos he was caught unaware. I drove in reverse for like 10secs before putting it on drive directly facing the ones in the front. The shot at me, but cos i was approaching them with speed, they were unable to aim straight at me, while jumping off the road. I crushed the leg of another one, and the zoomed of. I didn't drive home straight, rather drove to the police station and kept my car there for like a week in order to clear my tracks. It was an experience i would never forget.

We woke up dis morning pulling bodies out of Iyana Ipaja canal. So many bodies have been washed down dis canal. The one dat shocked me most was a sight of a woman with her baby on her back both dead. A man on suit clinging to his bible, already dead. Yesterday, right before my eyes, a woman slipped while trying to cross a street filled of water and before you know it, she's already gone, washed down the gutter, While trying to rescue her by stretching to her a plank of wood, she let mistakenly let go and here we are watching her being washed down in force with her head smatching anything that tends to stop her from being washed off, I still can't get the sight off my head. How do i overcome dis nightmare ? please help,
