Travel › Re: The New Yorker Magazine Article On Lagos by ijogbon(m): 3:24am On May 25, 2007
I dont know anything O ! but when I was reading this stuff in far away Eliza land I had this warm glow waft through me and settle somewhere around my throat where it stayed and made breathing hard for me at times.

All what the guy has written we all know. And it is true. But the authour was able to describe stuff in such detail that I have come to the conclusion that the guy was not WRITING about Eko ile but he was USING Lagos to show off his writing dexterity. OMG is this guy white? He didnt just describe a place I was born, grew up and became a man in such detail that I want to go and find out where this Third mainland of a place is did he? So much that I would like to take the tour exactly as he took it and find all the actors in his story. He even got to meet Oju yobo !!!!!

Now I will try to adjudicate here -

For people who are saying the article portrays Lagos in bad light well I grew up there and so should know, that is exactly how I remember Lagos, ese O! we like am like that. Eko is Eko ! If you want a place with wide roads, street lights, immense government presence, relatively stable light bla bla bla it exists in Naij already - It is called ABUJA. Lagos aint no Abuja ! This is LAGOS !!! We will do things our way but we will do it excellently !!!!

When I used to live outside Lagos I used to so look forward to seeing that sign 'THIS IS LAGOS' that I used to wake up just after the last bridge (Night bus from PH) before the toll gate just in time to see it. It pained me when the first Welcome to Lagos sign came up around 2002.

The analogy that is lost to everyone is the fact that Lagos in the article is where people from far and wide escape to in order to make themselves better, and make their families back home better. People from all over Nigeria converge here, all over West Africa they strive to get to Lagos. Only for them to get there and find that there is no free lunch, no roads paved in gold, no hand outs and often NO GOING BACK except at Christmas to floss back in the yard. Remind you of somewherez?

Yes Lagos is the Jand and Yanks that some people are going to know. How close the experience!!! Our coming to Yankie and Ilu queen is the same as people going to Lagos from anywhere, to make something of themselves !!!! Tell me, the jobs you have seen some people doing in London and Yanks do you think they will ever have contemplated it in Naij?. The things I have seen here in London ehn I wish I could write and be so eloquent you people for know say the guy try sef for Lagos. London!!! Ko jo at all at all.

So people BASK in the euphoria of the article and take your references on where you are going to contribute or benefit. Stop 'Shouthink' (Ma so'oro ju) on Nairaland some people wan sleep, Hustle dey tomorrow. Jasii.

@Seun
A lot of people here don't get your analogy. Its about taxes (Right?) and not education at all (just used to contrast).

Your view is not nouveau.

What you fail to notice is that government does realise this. But because Government too has to be run on the basis of sound business practice, the practise persists.
Now you tell me if you sell a product or service which of your customers would you sell to for a margin? Those who can afford it of course. Its all part of a pricing strategy.

So government 'sells' its product and services (providing good roads, schools healthcare etc) to everybody. And although it probably cost the same to provide the services to everybody Rich or poor, successful or suffering, they sell at a 'margin' to those that can better afford it.

You may say it is a tax on success. But if I was an Okada rider I would charge you N50 in V.I and Ikoyi for a trip that would normally cost N20 in Phi Niger.

@ayeesha
She been married for 6months? 6 months? Damn, the honey moon is not even over and she creeping? Yeah she the one creeping here !!! huh  huh  angry

I don't get it shakes head and tries to make sense of it all 6 months is not even enough time to have opened ALL the wedding presents and she finds time to go to work, come home to cook and take care of the home like a good married woman, notice that her man be trippin AND start an AFFAIR, now she want to f**k damn, I don't get.

Maybe the man is angry that the presents he got were not going to pay off the wedding expenses, maybe the brides folks didnt give his folks enough food at the wedding, maybe the pictures didnt come out good, maybe NEPA f**king took light that afternoon, there are a million and one reasons why the guy might be giving his new wife grief. After 1 MONTH of the GUY ANNOYING HER !!!! (and 5 Good months of marraige I guess) she has this guy (already) damn !!!!

I don't get it.

Thats why I was much happier when I didnt think I was ever going to get married.
Marriage ? I just don't know what the hype is, building yours and another persons future with somebody has all the ingredients for success that hoping a Lion and a young succulent lamb get together has. Either the lamb has to accept that little bits of it might get lost once in a while as a sacrifice for friendship or the Lion has to accept that a vegetarian lifestyle is not so bad afterall.

SACRIFICE. !!!! Humans don't do it too well.

I think she should leave her husband if she thinks he is REALLY NO GOOD and go for Mr. Enchanting if she really thinks he would do the same for her ie LEAVE HIS WIFE. Then they can live happily ever after or TRY AGAIN when it doesnt go as they have planned.

People always fail to realise that relationships are just exactly what it says on the box - A CHANCE TO RELATE to someone. So you often have to put stuff into it. Just like cooking a soup, you put in ingredients, a little salt, a few herbs, some stock etc and you get out soup. If your soup don't taste right you aint putting in the right ingredients or you aint putting in the right amount. Simple.

Take control of your relationships, a bit on the side ? That aint goin ta help.

For everybody who has got their facts wrong.

Farmers invested their OWN funds. To acquire the seedlings, to raise and farm the crops, to buy fertiliser, to buy pesticides, buy tractors, harvest, employ labour etc.
To become a farmer you need to get Land and then go about your business, little or no government largesse.

Oil on the other hand takes a lot of investment. Even before you start drilling you might have spent 100's of Millions of Dollars.
Now, ever before the oil started coming out of the ground the FEDERAL government has invested funds which were generated elsewhere (Agriculture for a start) and made arrangements to receive revenue from OIL. They do not drill for the oil themselves, they get royalties and taxes from those who drill. They are receiving the dividends of our investments!!!!!

My point is to people who feel that ALL the money should be given to the Niger delta because the oil is there - Since the bid rounds are open and some Niger delta states have even won bids for Oil blocks (fact) why don't they drill for their own oil, with their own funds so that when they find oil they can take all the proceeds and keep for themselves? Ahn ahn, abi they don't have enough money to drill? They can borrow from their governors. Them G's be richer than all Nigerian states combined, if they can become so affluent in just 8 years they should teach their people how they did it.

Abi, them wan chop from where them no sow? is it totally free revenue that they are looking for? The Niger delta state governors should have concentrated on winning bids for oil blocks and drilling for oil and not on looting their treasuries.

In order to operate as a club, you would need to register the club either as a business name or as an incorporated company. The registration of the business name of my club is in progress. I would have long conluded the registration process if not for the inefficiency and insincerity of the previous lawyer that I engaged.The bank would need the business name registration or invorporation cert to allow you operate an account.
My ultimate goal is that I wil run a network of clubs. I am in the process of building a website and I would also be writing an investment news letter.
I would suggest that as a start you can hook up with people in the UK and then set up one there with the primary goal of investing bak home in Naija. You could then subscribe to a goo investment letter or two to keep up to date with the NSE.
I am however open to exploring how we can synergise,
@Frankiriri
Good job mate.
I think thats a good idea. So people in the UK and may be Europe I hope we can work out something from this end. I think that might suit us better since there is a good judicial structure here for resolving business concerns.
What do ya'all think?
As I have said I am down and I think we might start with First bank.
Politics › Re: Propose A Solution To The Niger-delta Crisis by ijogbon(m): 10:57pm On May 20, 2007
@Backslider
I couldnt have said it much better myself. People fail to realise that in every country there are such issues to contend with. Has anybody really thought about what they are saying?
Because the Oil comes from the Niger delta you should give them autonomy?
Well as I said before the issue is not about autonomy or not. The issue is about corrupt leaders period.
Corrupt leadership at the federal level, state level and local level.
I wondered aloud before - what are the governors and legislators from these ends doing? If Lagos can generate N5billion worth of internal revenue a month (fact) I am wondering what the hell is going on in the Niger delta.

The federal government takes care of the broad issues, the state government and local government should lets the impact of these broad issues be felt. These people collect so much money yet there is nothing they can show for it. Odili has 2 private jets, 4 helicopters, a purported airline, hospitals in South Africa (The fool why not Nigeria) and numerous other investments. Alams, for Christ sake he is a bail jumper, a common cross dressing criminal who uses 1 million GBP to prop up his saging midriff in bed recovering from a cosmetic surgery. Ibori? Do you even want me to start?

With leaders like these who needs the federal government bad guys. Are you Niger deltans really enthusiastic about being left to leaders like these, can you really deal with these kind of leaders? If these people controlled the whole revenue from the Niger delta tut tut we no go get anything left.

For people who think because the Niger delta has oil they should seceed well know that nothing lasts forever. The great pyramids of groundnut and the Agricultural dexterity of the North sustained this nation for well over 100 years before Oil was found 1800-1900. Look where they are now? The Oil in the Niger delta is finite. So beware what you ask for.

"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee."

Are ya Irish mate? Are ya white Irish? I wonder how you got to Ireland. How dem take born you there? How you take DO PAPERS?

The truth of the matter is that the US and the European countries which I think you are benchmarking with, do things to the advantage of their nations or sometimes themselves. That is the bottomline - SELF PRESERVATION.

The Dalai Lama it was who said -

Learn the Law, not so you can keep from breaking it, but so that when you do you can do so with impunity.

Nigerians made the Irish government change their laws regarding CITIZENSHIP ? Damn they should be thanking us.

The law is an ass, it yields to him who is beating it the best.
Politics › Re: 99% Of Nigerians Are Corrupt And Dubious by ijogbon(m): 2:18pm On May 20, 2007
I wonder what the definitions were? Corrupt and Dubious? Does that include the possesion of STOLEN property? If so, I am guilty. AND so also is the US, UK and many other european countries. They all looted and continue to loot the gullible African people. They receive the proceeds of the looting of African treasuries by their leaders and refuse to return these funds.
Of course the majority of Nigerians might be considered corrupt and dubious if you define these terms to the advantage of the 'first to thief'.

Out of the 150million ppl how many ppl are part of the WORK FORCE (45million) ! not all the 150million are of working age.
Out of whatever is left remove government workers, the next large group of workers are employed in Agriculture, Telecoms and Banking so the number of ppl is quite considerable.
