European Union, EU observers in their preliminary report in Abuja on Monday, said soldiers stopped them from monitoring Rivers election on Saturday. Head of the European Union observers group Maria Arena, who is also a member of the EU Parliament,  faulted  the elections as she stated that soldiers stopped them monitoring Rivers elections, even when they came to Nigeria on the invitation of INEC to monitor and make recommendations.

“Observers, including EU observers, were denied access to collation centres in Rivers, apparently by military personnel. This lack of access for observers compromises transparency and trust in the process.“In Rivers, INEC suspended until further notice the elections due to violence in polling units and collation centres, staff being taken hostage and election materials, including results sheets, seized or destroyed by unauthorised persons.“There is no doubt that the electoral process there was severely compromised" she said. 


Arena further disclosed that the European Union deployed 73 observers following voting, counting and the collation of results in 22 states. She also lamented the violence, underage voting and vote-buying that marred the governorship and House of Assembly elections as they monitored 223 polling units in 81 collation centres.

“Although election operations improved, the elections were also marked by an overall low turnout and violence, including against election officials and voters.“However, at eight polling units observed, we saw indications of vote-buying. Eight cases of obvious underage voting were also observed. Our observers saw that the counting of ballots transparent overall.“Positively, in almost all cases, party agents received copies of the result forms, although they were often not displayed. The environment for these elections has been difficult, with cases of violence and intimidation, including attacks on election administration officials" she said.

Two Kajuru communities in Kaduna state have been attacked again by armed bandits, after 17 women and children were killed over the weekend.

Kajuru communities attacked by bandits include Ikirimi village, as well as Iri, Dogon Noma in Ungwar Gamo, and the attacks left a yet-to-be ascertained number of casualties. The attack came a day after many were killed in Ungwar Barde, making it the second time the community will fall under such attack in recent times.

It started around 7a.m. this morning,” an indigene of Dogon Noma who simply want to be identified as Hon. Stingo told Premium Times. All of a sudden they (villagers) heard gunshots, when they began to come out of their houses, some were being shot dead. They shared themselves into three batches. One batch was standing strategically in the bushes surrounding the village. Two groups went in. The first group was the one firing. When people began to scamper for their lives, the second group enters and began to set the house on fire. Then those who ran into the bushes, those that were standing there were waiting for them.

“In the whole community, there’s no house that was not set ablaze. As we are talking, nobody can tell the number of casualties. Apart from the man (dead bodies) that have been heaped, there are many in the bushes around.”

A prominent member of the community who pleaded anonymity for security reasons, also confirmed the killings.

Yvonne Jegede who has been enmeshed in marital crisis with her estranged actor husband, has disclosed that she doesn't regret getting married to Abounce. Speaking about her barely  two-year-old marriage to Olakunle Fawole, aka Abounce in an interview with Sunday Scoop, the actress revealed that her marriage started having hiccups in her third month of pregnancy.

Yvonne Jegede said in the interview;“I do not regret my marriage to him. I have never regretted anything in my life. Every experience is something to learn from. There really is nothing for me to sit down and wish I didn’t do or should have done. Yes, I reverted to my original name on social media, but I am fine. Don’t I look alright?”

On being absent at the christening of their baby boy, Xavier, Yvonne added, “I really don’t know why he wasn’t there. Maybe you should ask him. However, I don’t feel bad that he wasn’t there and as you can see, I’m in high spirits.”

A Nasarawa woman suspected to be a political thug, has been arrested by soldiers after she snatched ballot papers from electoral officials  and ran away.The suspect who is said to be loyal to  one of the parties, grabbed the  ballot papers from the National Youth Service Corps members at Polling Unit 026, Gayam Ward,  Lafia in  Nasarawa State on Saturday and ran away. While policemen struggled in vain to arrest her, the lady was chased by some soldiers on Makurdi Road who retrieved some of the ballot papers from her. 

Mr Peter Bitrus, a domestic election observer who disclosed that the incident occurred just 30 minutes after Salamatu,  wife of Governor Tanko Al-Makura,  voted at the unit,  some suspected thugs working with the lady aided  her  escape.“It was a conspiracy. The governor’s wife voted  in this polling unit and we expected  that security would be tight here.“The exercise had  been largely peaceful before this woman came and caused pandemonium. She was dressed in a long black gown and she hid the papers under the gown.”

The Lassa fever virus has reportedly spread to 33 states, as the National Centre for Disease Control disclosed that a total of 1,447 suspected cases of Lassa fever have been recorded. It was further disclosed that since the outbreak, there had been 93 deaths, with case fatality ratio in the confirmed cases put at 22.1 per cent.

The latest report also revealed that 20 states, together with the FCT, had recorded at least one confirmed case across 66 local government areas.Affected states include Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Plateau, Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Kwara, Benue, Rivers, Kogi, Enugu, Imo, Delta, Oyo, Kebbi and Cross River states with the FCT. Speaking with SUNDAY PUNCH, the  Incident Manager, National Emergency Operation Centre, Ms Chioma Dan-Nwafor said the Federal Government in its effort to curb the disease had established treatment centres in the states where the disease was prevalent across the country. She further disclosed that many of the affected cases were on 21-day surveillance.

Ayodele Fayose, the former Governor of Ekiti State lost his polling unit and ward to the All Progressives Congress, APC, in today's House of Assembly election in the state. The former Governor of Ekiti State failed to deliver his polling unit and ward in his hometown, Afao Ekiti in Irepodun Ifelodun local government area of the state to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Fayose lost his polling unit  at St David’s Primary School and ward as the APC candidate in Irepodun/Ifelodun constituency (2), Hakeem Jamiu, polled 168 votes to defeat the PDP’s candidate, Sunday Omosilade, who got 26 votes. The election was conducted after Omosilade, who was Fayose’s personal assistant, had in a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) signified his intention to withdraw from the race. According to him, he had doubt about the neutrality of INEC to conduct free and fair election. His withdrawal was however rejected by INEC, who reiterated that he remains the candidate of the PDP for the constituency.

Boko Haram members who launched an attack earlier today, prevented Yobe state governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, from voting.

Director General of Media affairs to the governor, Abdullahi Bego, who confirmed that Boko Haram members prevented Yobe state governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, from voting, added that security agents advised the governor who is a senatorial candidate in this Saturday election, to suspend participating in the voting exercise.

"This is because of the incident in Gaidam town early in the day, which has already been brought under control and voting is now underway there, the security agencies would naturally seek to reinforce and increase security around the governor for him to travel to cast his vote.

“That increased security around the governor will mean that vital security resources that are needed elsewhere in the state would have to be diverted and allocated to the governor.

“The government made the decision – in consultation with the security agencies – that it is better and more useful for the security agents, including soldiers, police, Civil Defence, DSS, etc to focus their attention on providing security for the election throughout the state.

“As things stand now, voting is going on successfully across the state and His Excellency Governor Gaidam is pleased and grateful to the people for the large turnout at polling units throughout the state”.

Bola Tinubu, an APC Chieftain and a former Governor of Lagos has defended photos which showed bullion vans at his Bourdillon residence, ahead of the 2019 election which held today. 

Tinubu who defended the bullion van photos while being interviewed on Channels 'The Verdict', said its his money and he can spend it anyhow he wants it. He further stated that he has not been in government for a while and if anybody can link him to getting the money through fraudulent means, the person should come forward with evidence. 

He further told the Channels Reporter that if he has voters ready to vote for his party, he can give them the money free of charge because he made it.

Efia Odo and Counsellor Luterrodt were involved in a physical fight, after they both showed up for Abeiku Santana’s show on Okay FM.

Controversial Counsellor Lutterodt who was angrily questioning why Efia Odo will wear skimpy dresses, was slammed by the Ghanaian actress who called him a mad man who talks recklessly at the least opportunity.

However after the relationship counsellor said her dressing was not the way decent girls should dress, adding that the presenter had dressed shabbily like a toy, Efia asked why the media continues to give Counsellor Lutterodt the platform to drop his comments about people.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has delisted APC candidates in Cross River just few hours before the 2019 elections will hold. 

INEC delisted APC candidates in Cross River in  compliance with a Federal High Court order, which recognises the Etim John-led State Executive Council of the party. The court order also directed the electoral body to recognise only candidates from the John-led State Executive Council.

In the letter signed by Mrs Rose Anthony, Secretary to the Commission, Cross River REC was directed to retain names and logo of the party pending when the National Working Committee of APC submit the names of candidates from the Etim John executive. APC members in the state have been torn on two factions led by John Ochalla and Etim John.

Jussie Smollett has been arrested in Chicago, for  allegedly filing a false police report claiming he was the victim of a hate-crime attack. 

A Police spokesman who confirmed that Jussie Smollett has been arrested in Chicago, said the Empire star was in the custody of detectives who had earlier contacted Smollett's legal team, "to negotiate a reasonable surrender for his arrest."

The actor who faces three years imprisonment if convicted,  is due in court for a bond hearing at 1:30 p.m. CT Thursday.  In a statement released after Smollett was charged, his attorneys said he "enjoys the presumption of innocence, particularly when there has been an investigation like this one where information, both true and false, has been repeatedly leaked."

"Given these circumstances, we intend to conduct a thorough investigation and to mount an aggressive defense," the statement from attorneys Todd S. Pugh and Victor P. Henderson said.

The Nigerian army has finally reacted to the viral video of cadets, assaulting a young man whose clothes were removed. In the video which went viral last year December, the cadets were spotted slapping the assaulting victim and also torturing him. The Nigerian army who reacted to the viral video of cadets assaulting the young man in a press statement released today, stated that none of the alleged cadets is fully dressed like present day Nigerian Army (NA) personnel.The statement further revealed that the camouflage is not the proper Nigerian army camouflage in use today.

According to Colonel SAGIR MUSA, the Acting Director Army Public Relations, with the silent professional transformation going on in the NA and the professional temperament of the NA leadership at all levels of command, one will be doubtful of the conduct of these “fake soldiers’ as shown in the video recording.

Blessing Egbe is one of Nigeria’s leading filmmakers. Since the release of her soar-away television series, “Lekki Wives”, Egbe has moved from one victorious outing to the other. In this interview with eelive.ng, she speaks about her journey from acting to filmmaking and the how her latest effort, The Ten Virgins puts her on a totally different pedestal.


You are currently working on a big project; can you tell us about it?



I’m currently in post production for the Film /Series The Ten Virgins.

It is an adaptation of the Holy Bible parable of the ten virgins. In this adaptation, ten maidens who are betrothed to the great prince in the land must remain faithful and committed to him while he is yet away on a seemingly endless journey. The characters in this faith based big budget story are highly symbolic and represent the relationship between the Christ and the church universal.



When you say big budget, how do you mean? What is the budget for The Ten Virgins like?



What is the motivation for this story?



The motivation for The Ten Virgins came about as a result of the haha moment I got while searching the scriptures for a clearer and deeper understanding of Christian living as it relates to the Kingdom of God.

Other Bible passages didn’t quite give me the understanding I desired but reading the parable of the ten virgins again and watching a short clip of a church play online gave me all I needed. And so, came about the motivation to begin writing and eventually filming. It is such a simple, yet powerful and concise explanation. Ten virgins are set to meet with their bridegroom. But while he is away on a journey, they meet with tribulations which exposed their level of preparation. Of the ten, five ones who proved to be wise and ready put enough oil in their lamps and this kept their lamps burning. But the other five did not have enough oil and their lamps went off, which indicated that they were ill prepared. When the bridegroom returned, only those who were ready went out to meet him. The message here couldn’t be any clearer.



Would you call Ten Virgins a Christian movie then especially as it is going to the Cinema?

While The Ten Virgins is faith based, and one which seeks to promote morals, It is not a film for only Christians. The Ten Virgins was made for all to watch, enjoy and learn. The entertainment value is extremely high and will be enjoyed by all regardless of religion, a goal which was important to me in telling this story. It is a cinema worthy content because we did not lose sight of the didactic and entertainment at any stage during the entire production process. It is an experience that every single film viewer would hold with them for long.

You were in court with some cinema owners, what has happened to that case?

The many delays in the court proceedings became tiring at some point and after many years of no head way, I called my lawyer and told him I was done.

But has the situation between cinema operators and filmmakers, we still hear a lot of complaints?

The main problem in my opinion is the current share ratio between the cinemas, distributors and the filmmaker. In the end the producer goes home with about 30 percent of the proceeds. When this issue comes up in industry forums, filmmakers are told that this is the obtainable practice worldwide. Perhaps when the cinema chain expands, and a better deal is put in place, producers will stop complaining. My wish for the industry is that it begins to think global and embrace global standards in all areas of filmmaking, from funding, to production, to post production, to marketing and distribution. Practitioners should not only choose to apply world standards in areas that are beneficial to them



Many observers think that Nollywood is not even near its potential, what do say about that?



The observers are not wrong. Things are not working the way they should in Nollywood. Many practitioners do not understand the ethics of the business, so we need a total overhaul, which is almost an impossibility. Lol. I dare say a few of its practitioners have gotten it right and my hope is that more and more will tow in that line and in the end, the industry in general will be positively affected for good.


Can you mention one of two areas you think things much change for Nollywood to get better?

We must improve in the art of story telling. There is no doubt that stories abound in these parts but the manner and style we tell them must improve. We must take more risks and not play too comfortably. Most Nigerian audiences often say our stories are predictable and indeed it is true. Also we must up the ante and give more value to production. Most of our works look rushed and poorly treated.


Do you see any need for a more unified front?

Definitely. United we stand, divided we fall right? Right! but how do we unite when there isn’t unity of purpose amongst the lot of us. For now, film makers may have to just find their kind with like minds and unite with.

Female filmmakers seem to be having their time in the sun currently, what are the women doing?

I don’t thing that there is anything extra-ordinarily different that women do to with their films to get good box office returns. I’m struggling to find the right answer to this question because, to be honest I don’t like it when film makers are categorised men vs women.

I mean, why is that? Recently I saw a post where a filmmaker’s accolade was tagged and tied to her gender…. 2nd highest grossing film by a woman or something degrading like that. Again, I ask what is that? Are women children? Was she not deserving of that achievement? If it was a man, would that tag be attached to the accolade? We are all adults playing in the same field and must be treated and categorised as one. A filmmaker is a film maker and that’s that. In fact, to answer your question, I believe that women are shattering the stereotypes and breaking records because they have been put in a box for so long and now they are daring to change the narrative and to prove a point!!! The point being… they are capable! Now see the result for yourself- box office records up and down. Laughs. Anyway, it’s good for those who put so much pressure on the specie called woman.


Still talking about women, how does the female actor fare in Nigeria, with stories about couch casting? You started your career as an actor, did you ever experience this?


Yeah, yeah. The couch casting syndrome is eminent in Nollywood as I imagine with other industries but that’s not an excuse for a scruffy filmmaker to assume he or she can seduce or caress an actor in need of a role It’s ridiculous and the first time it happened to me, I hit the man so hard that he could not believe his eyes. Theyeye marketer met me at a producer’s office and decided to try his bad luck. He surprisingly placed his hands around my shoulders and slowly made his way down my back side. As he did this, he voiced out loud in his igbotic accent “Nna, this tall slim gal will be good for our epic feem oh…” Anyway, what happened next is story for a short movie. You will have to pay me to get that gist. Laughs…

The second harassment came from a prominent writer, producer, director who also wanted to try his luck. I had called to speak to him about the possibility of us working together. He gave me an appointment which I kept. The meeting was at a hotel, not his office. I had asked him why we were meeting at the hotel and he said, it was a make shift office… A routine he does when he needs time to write. I believed him and followed him to the make shift office. When inside, he gave me a script to read and went on to spew some lyrics which was intended to hit the right spot. Only that my spot isn’t easily receptive to such targets. His lyrics were: “you know, writing is like a drug, when I start, I get really into it,. And that’s why I like to retreat” I go:“wow, I can imagine me too I’d like to write some screenplays some day. I think I have a flare for it. “I must have taken him off his route because his next statement made sure to take us there. “Don’t you want to Act again?” He asked. “of course, I do, shebi that’s why I called you. You shoot a lot of films and I will like to feature in one” I replied. Then he said something like: “Great then but all the scripts I have now have complete cast attached. What I can do for you is simple, I’ll write like 3 of 4 scripts with you as lead. But to do that you will have to spend some time with me, we will travel to the east together and as I see you, the inspiration will come for the stories.”


I paused for a while, then came up with an answer:“wow you will do that for me? Thank you so much. This calls for celebration. I’m coming, let me discharge my cab man. He was smiling when I left the room, but the smile didn’t last as I called him soon after I entered the cab and abused the hell out of him.”

But seriously though, these abusive acts must stop. So many actors have fallen to the schemes of liars. I have had to speak to so many upcoming actors about not giving in to the casting couch practice which they are deceived to see as paying their dues. That is why I give as many opportunities as possible to new artistes in my productions. I guess it’s my own little way of giving hope to upcomers now that I am now a writer producer and director.



Your film, The Women was said to have done pretty well at the cinemas, does that give you an idea of what the Nigerian audience wants?



The Women did okay at the cinemas, not well. Doing well is when you gross above the N75m mark. Remember the producer only takes home between 30 and 35 after all the deductions. But if you add sales from other platforms, then you can say The Women did well.

As for the Nigerian audience reception to Nollywoodfilms, records have shown that the audience is unpredictable. Films that make Nigerians laugh and forget their sorrows seem to be the first on the list followed by well delivered dramas with a stint of comedy. Maybe well-made action films will get their support. But in all of these, a well publicised and hyped film always sees them rushing to the cinemas. My hope for The Ten Virgins is that it is appreciated because it is a genre yet untapped and different in many ways

In what ways is The Ten Virgins different?

The Ten Virgins is different from my previous works. Apart from the stage-like set and characteristics deployed, it is full of music and dance. The setting and language are medieval and a lot of work went into achieving the old fashioned look and feel. It also had a large cast with over 500 back ground actors!

After The Ten Virgin, what next, what dreams do you have for your career?

My dream is to harness my craft. Fortify it against wear or tear, continue to tell stories that calls me to action and stay relevant in the business for as long as I choose to practice.

Is any of your children interested in this business?

Danielle is most definitely interested in acting and I see her leaning towards that. She likes to sing and dance too. Michelle has God given talents in abundance. I just hope she stays interested in harnessing them. She plays the violin, piano, cello and drums, her drawings are exceptional and at 10, she has asked to start a comic story book. She is also good is sports and is an A student in Computer Science and Numeracy. Simeon is a fine boy with behaviours like the many cartoon characters he watches. With time we will know where his interest lies

The Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from declaring Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, a former Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, wanted. 

Maina who was dismissed from the federal civil service in 2013 after being suspected of complicity in the diversion of pension funds,  was declared wanted after it was reported that Buhari Government had reinstated him. Justice Folasade Giwa-Ogunbanjo who ruled on the case, said the EFCC erred by declaring Maina wanted without first obtaining a court order.

Punch reported that the court which stopped the EFCC from declaring Maina wanted, further ruled that the EFCC could not exercise its powers under sections 1(2)(c), 6, 7, 13 of the EFCC Act without recourse to court.

“The plaintiff’s second prayer is a declaration that without recourse to any safeguard in sections 35, 37, 41 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), including a judicial intervention, order of court pursuant to sections 1(1), 8(1) and 42(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, the 1stdefendant cannot lawfully exercise its discretion, powers and or functions under sections 1(2)(C), 6, 7, 13 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Act, 2004, ditto section 4 of the Police Act, 2004 within the confines of the law" a copy of the judgement read in part.

A seven-man robbery gang known for terrorising residents around the College Road, Fagba, and Abattoir areas of the state, were arrested by the police on Valentine's day. 

The suspects arrested around 9pm on College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos, were identified as Lekan Akinyemi, 23; Chimeze Ofulie, 18; Babangida Abdullahi, 22; Abubakar Umaru, 30; Samuel Oyinloye, 24; Timileyin Oladipupo, 27; and Habeeb Olayinka.

The Lagos State police who in its statement confirmed that the seven-man robbery gang who come from different parts of the country but residing in Abattoir, Agege, Lagos, were arrested on Valentine's day, stated that the suspects robbed one Augustine Agafe after he alighted from a taxi at College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye and reportedly took an android phone, N14,000, and a handbag.

Punch reported that the police revealed that one of the suspects, Oladipupo, popularly known as ‘Timi Yahoo’, specialised in working on SIM cards of stolen phones to determine which ones were enabled for Internet banking in order to transfer money from their victims’ accounts. The suspects who have been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for a thorough investigation, would be charged to court as soon as investigations was completed.

Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika who reacted to the postponement of election and excuse Nigeria's electoral body gave, disclosed that INEC lied about the weather being bad to move materials. 

Recall that INEC Chairman, Yakubu Mahmood disclosed that the presidential and National Assembly elections were postponed over bad weather which affected flight operations. However reacting to this via Twitter, Minister of State for Aviation who insinuated that INEC lied about weather, wrote; 

“INEC should say something else as weather was good for flight operations on the eve of elections, similarly all airports were directed to open 24 hours during the election period.” 

However an Spokesman for the electoral body, Mr Oluwole  Osaze-Uzezi who spoke with a Punch correspondent, debunked counter claims made by the Minister. He said; 

“Did we say weather was bad on Saturday or Friday? No, we said days before the election and we stand by that.”
