Lol @ "Ikenna method" To add to what Sultaan had suggested. Is the engine rough idling, aside the vibration? That is, does the engine run roughly or not smoothly when you rev the car at stationary and in motion? Yes, vibration is a sign of rough idling, but we still need to be sure of the issue. Sultaan has explained how to manually test the working of the spark plugs to you. But you may need to test the spark plug leads, which would give the same symptom of failed spark plug, if any of the spark plug leads fails. There are two methods of testing the spark plug leads i know of: Digital Multimeter & leak test. DMM test is easy if you have one. Its not expensive. N200 or N500 can get you one. All you need to do is to check the resistance value of the lead. If it fails below factory value, then you have seen your culprit. As for the leak test, we have two methods as well: test for electric shocks & test for sparks. The electric shock method is not for the faint hearted. How do i mean? If any of the leads is leaking, it will shock you as soon as any part of your body touches the spot of the leak. Rub your hand on all the leads, from one end to the other. If any is leaking you will get electric shock. Any lead that shocks you will be the culprit. The leakage prevents the complete high voltage from distributor or coil packs from reaching the spark plugs, hence, loss of sparks or insufficient sparks by the spark plugs in the combustion chambers. The second method of testing spark plug leads is simple and more acceptable, since no one wants to get any electric shock. Hehe! Anyway, you will need a spray container for this method. Fill it with water and spray mist of water on all the leads, while engine is running or idling. You will see spark of light if the mist of water touches any spot of leakage on the leads. If you find any spark plug leads leaking sparks, replace it new one, not used. If you cant afford it or cant find a good new one at the time, you can tape the lead, especially, at the spot it shocked you or was leaking sparks. Taping it will make it work well, pending when you can replace it. Use the black pvc/electric tape. If your engine has distributor, you will need to check the cap for cracks. If the cap cracks, a spark plug or two maynot be getting volts from the distributor. In fact, i would advice you start the test with the distributor cap. Use the same electric shock and water mist spray method i have explained above. If you get electric shock when you run hand on the distributor cap, then the cap has cracked and will need to be replaced. If your engine is distributorless, that is, it has coil packs instead, start with the spark plug test Sultaan explained above. If you noticed that the engine does not idle differently or show any change when you pullout any of the spark plug leads, swap the coil pack of the cylinder not working with one that works (one that you notice a difference in the engine idling when you pullout the lead). What you will findout after the swap job will tell you if the culprit is the coil pack, lead or the spark plug. Please, all the test explained above must be carried out with the engine running or idling. But if you dont want to go through the manual diagnosis i explained above, you will have to scan the car. Better get your own scanner, like Sultaan advised. But sometimes, you may have to go beyond scanner to properly deal with an issue, since scanner will only narrow it down for you. Am not sure if scanner will tell you if the spark plug lead is the culprit or not. But a personal OBD II scanner is a must for every '96 & above EFI engine user Good luck! Ikenna |
Amaizu: Pity,i'm in Enugu.Really wished it was one of those times you come down to the east.I'll try see what i can do and keep you postedActually, i may likely come down to East in 2 weeks time or so (of course with my BABY). Am starting my annual leave next week. I have been itching to fire my baby again on a long trip, which i love doing a lot. I cant wait to listen to the noisy roaring impressive engine note on top speed, hence, the v6 songs. Oh! Am i forgetting its manual transmission which i enjoy pushing so hard until it starts screaming? Damn! I missed the fun. But i also have some personal matters that i needed to care of in Abuja, which may take the whole days of the leave. So I maynot make the trip. Besides, Xmas is around the corner. Dont mind me and my Baby. Though, i will stop at Enugu first, to take care of some personal matters before heading to Anambra. If time permits, we will meet. But i wont advice you wait till i come, since the excessive fueling can ruin your engine, if conginued to be used for a long time(the excess unburnt fuel washing down the cylinders, entering the crankcase and diluting the engine oil in the sump). You can take it to someone that understand what EFI engine is. I know some Peugeot mechanics in Enugu, but am not sure i can vouch for any. Ikenna |
Amaizu: Ikenna, aside the hunting,i also noticed that on revving,my 406 brings out black smoke.i couldn't make out which ones are vacumm hoses but i'll look it up online.Black smoke? Excessive fueling. Your car engine is having fuel flooding, that why you are getting the black smoke symptom. A lot would make a car run such thirsty, to the point of emitting black smoke. One of them is the vacuum leak. Inspect all the hoses in the engine bay for leaks, unclamped, unplugged or broken, if you cant tell vacuum lines from fuel lines. Are you in Abuja? It shouldn't be a difficult thing to fix for you. Ikenna |
fescope: Hi IkennaAm sorry about the issues you are having about your car. I wonder what could cause the damage of the BSI or the engine ECU? Unfortunately, am not a dealer and i dont know any car parts seller i trust enough to send you what you really need and for it to work. They are all the same. Try-your-luck, if i would say. But i will still ask around, but wont vouch for anyone. Ikenna |
midpoint: My Peugeot 307 shakes and displays "Depollution System Faulty" sometimes when I start it. What could be the problem? I noticed it first time during the last Abuja fuel scarcity when my fuel went very low before i could refuel. Its possible that your injectors or fuel filter are clogged, from dirts in the fuel tank when you ran the engine on reserve or nearly empty tank. Whatever that means, its an injection issue. You can start by replacing the fuel filter. Then, get a good fuel injector cleaner. Unfortunately, we dont have Techron (Chevron product) in Nigerian markets. The best injection fuel system cleaner, so far. But you can try the Mobil or TOTAL injection system cleaner. The best usually is to clean them off the car. But how and with what? Carburetor cleaner? Don't try it. Aside cleaning the injection system, if you can afford scanning the car ecu for error code(s), it wont be a bad idea. This is why i always advise people to try and have their own individual scanners, so that you wont have to be spending huge amount of money in scanning the car at commercial place, for every little issue with your car. Ikenna |
Some persons have asked me to post the pic of my Lion, that they want to feed their eyes. So, if you want to see how my BABY looks, this is it: http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/showthread.php?99977-New-looks-of-my-505-V6&p=1099994#post1099994 Ikenna |
@ t-die, Usually, CKP is attached on the Bellhousing (what Nigerians call banjo), while the knock sensor is attached on the Cylinder head or engine block, as long as its close to the combustion chambers. Try pulling out the ckp and check the surface. If mud got trapped in the bellhousing and covers the sensor, it will stop sensing the spinning of the flywheel or may find it difficult to do so. If very dirty, clean up the dirt, fix back and try starting the car again. If any improvement is noticed, then you have found the culprit. You can also test the resistance value of the ckp with Digital Multimeter, to determine if the sensor still gives factory values or not. You may have to check workshop manual, if you have, to know the factory value of the sensor. Do know that some engines have their ckp attached close to crankshaft pulley, in front of the engine, not on the bellhousing. The workshop manual will show you the location of the sensor in the engine bay or you google it. My 2 Lions have their CKPs on the bellhousing, which was why i assumed yours should be there too. But you need to be sure. Hard-starting, usually, is caused by engine flooding or lean mixture. Most of the time, its injection issue. But if the amplifier module starts failing, it could cause hard starting. Likewise, an injection or ignition relay that is working intermittently, will do the same. Ikenna. |
HI All, I'm back again (See my post earlier in this thread about an Oil leaking and hard starting Peugeot 307 Automatic). I bought a Lexia/PP2000 scan tool but for some reasons, it could not communicate with my ECU. I then had to have it scanned with a generic tool and pulled the following codes; Fault Code PD209: Description-Dialogue with the Automatic gearbox ECU. Incorrect value received. Status-Intermittent fault Fault Code P0480: Fan Unit Speed reference value. Status-Intermittent fault Fault Code P0326: Knock sensor. Status-Permanent Fault My question-especially regards the knock sensor is whether the knock sensor can be responsible for hard starting issues-I looked online but there seem to be different opinions. Also is the knock sensor the same with crankshaft position sensor (Thats what the Manager of the Autoshop where I had my car scanned said). I had my Coolant temperature sensor changed a few days back to a brand new one from the UK. But my hard starting issues persist. As regards the Oil leak. I think I found the culprit... The Air hose wasn't fitting snugly enough unto the throttle body...! I had that rectified and the leakage has almost stopped totally. Will use the car for a while to see if it comes up again. Pleas what could be the other causes of this hard starting. Someone else said it could be the fuel pump. Ikenna, Siena...
Welcome back. No, Knock sensor is not CKP (Crankshaft Position Sensor). Peugeot calls it knock detector or Detonation sensor. Its a microphone that is attached close to combustion chambers, to detect and signal to ECU if engine is pinging or knocking. And when ECU receives such signal, it will rretard the timing to save or protect the engine. That is its function. You can even run the engine with the Detonation sensor disconnected, but your engine wont be protected anymore against knocking or pinging. And, Yes, faulty CKP will give a hard-starting or a non-starting symptom. But you still need to be sure what sensor your mechanic was refering to as the knock sensor or CKP. Have you tried to clean the harness and sensor connectors? Corrossion in harness/sensor wiring connectors will reduce the full signal of values from the sensors to the ECU. Pull-out all the connectors you can lay hand on, clean them and fix them back, you never know. Ikenna. |

Amaizu: Ikenna, pls i own a 2004 Peugeot 406(Nigerian assembly). Its the 1.8L version. On idling,it tends to rev up and down. The exhaust sounds as if it has a leak but there is no leak on it.My mechanic suggested replacing the fuel filter and plugs. What do you think?Hunting issue. The issue is possibly a vacuum leak. Check all the vacuum lines on the engine for leak. Make sure all lines are well clamped, tightly. Also make sure no vacuum line are plugged in where they are supposed to. Hunting is usually caused by vacuum leak. Btw, vacuum lines are all the hoses in on the engine/engine bay, other than the fuel and coolant hoses. Ikenna. |
munaco: omo u do not really need a car but if u insist, why not go for a small car like kia pinto, or any tokunbo car less than N500,000 (u can still get this car no mind ur naija people)u can still get a nigerian used car but be carefull cos the maintainance and the fueling aspect is the wahala. One doesnt need to wait till he starts earning a million naira monthly to own a car. I was using and maintaining my father's car while i was in the University with my pocket money, singlehandedly. Not once did i seek for financial assistance from dad to keep the car on the road. I wasnt rich, in case you are wondering. The little i was getting was enough. It was possible to do so because i adopted and applied preventative maintenance, to prevent the car breaking down, which would cost much to fix. Op, get a tokunbo car with your budget. Golf 3 manual tranny is the best choice for you. Look for a fuel carbureted engine one. I wont advice anyone to use a loan and purchase a Nigerian used car. You need a car that will serve you for 2 good years, without much visits to mechanic workshop, since you will be paying for the loan and wont have much to spend in repairing the abused car on daily basis, if it was a Nigerian used car that you end up buying. By the time the tokunbo car you purchased in good condition start aging and giving you issues, you must have finished paying off the loans. How could someone claimed that Toyota Camry has a better fuel economy than Golf 3. Anything to prove Camry I4 Consumes less than Golf 3? One need to set aside emotions when matters like this come up. Am not a VW fan, neither am I an I4 fan too. But someone needs our help. The best we could do is to offer a non-biased suggestions. Are you telling me Toyotas dont have their issues? Do you really want us to talk about that? This thing with Nigerians and Toyota! Op, whatever you do, buy a tokunbo in good condition. Do know that people that earns lower than you do own cars too and aint complaining. Like i always say, DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ! Ikenna |
bajugbajug: @aqva. tanks. but which is better btw golf 3 auto and manual? There is nothing wrong with any of them (even though i dislike auto). It depends on the one you like most and can afford to maintain. Test drive any auto and manual tranny cars and decide which to choose. Though, I would advise if you are to choose auto tranny, findout the cost of the transmission (to know if you can afford the replacement anytime it fails). Because you may have to replace it sooner than you expect. Ikenna. |
olashow: I actually scanned it but God save us from these mechs.. Truth is my mech can not interpret the codes and solve the problem as it is. Please what do you suggest? and can you recommend a good one here in lagos? orSorry, I stay in Abuja. But can we have the error codes you pulled? Ikenna |
olashow: Hi Ikenna351,You kind of put yourself in this problem? Why didnt you scan the car the first time you noticed the loss of power, since you couldnt troubleshoot manually? From your explanation, all what you & your mechanic have been doing is guess work. By the way, you said the mechanic removed the catalytic converter. What about the oxygen sensor on the carty? Did he install it back on the exhaust and plug back the sensor connector to harness? Or have you been using the car without the o2 sensor and expect the engine to run smoothly? I believe the car fuel economy has been suffering all those while. You have really complicated matters. Its more like an abuse, forgive me to say. If I were you, i would get my own OBD II scanner. Better still, Lexia 3 Peugeot/Citroen scanner. Contact bigx, off the section. I believe he still have it in stock. The scanner will always direct you to the possible culprit, whenever something electric goes wrong, to prevent trial and error, when you cant afford taking the car for commercial scanning. For now, find a place you can scan the car and let us see the error codes. We will take it from there. Ikenna |
bajugbajug: @topmost tank u for d advice. Wot abt golf 3?Yes, go for the Golf 3. If you can get a tokunbo fuel carbureted engine Golf 3, you will enjoy it. Golf is not just a car, but a ride. Ikenna. |
@ t-die, I would need you to carryout a leak test. Clean the exterior of the throttle body well, including the oil pressure sensor. Make sure you wipe out oil around the sensor. Then start the car, let it idle as long as it takes, until you see the spot where the oil is leaking out from, on the oil pressure sensor or wherever. Let us know your findouts. Ikenna. |
Sorry to be a bug, but Ikenna and Siena, I still dey wait o...
I don't think the oil pressure switch/sensor will have anything thing to do with the issue. If the sensor fails, you will get oil pressure warning lit on the instrument cluster, unless the switch seal has failed/broken.Where exactly is the oil coming out from? From the oil filler cap vacuum line to the throttle body? Or is oil dropping from the pressure switch or what? Am yet to get the picture. It appears your engine is not breathing properly. Hope none of the engine breathing tube/line is blocked? is the sensor on top of the blue sensor the TPS (throttle Position Sensor)? Lets hope others would have a better suggestion on what could be the issue and how to fix it. Ikenna. |
LasBonBoi: You wanted to say 1 million Km I guess, not 1 million miles.Oh! Sorry, its km, not miles. Thanks for the correction. I still dont understand why you doubt the possibility of a 2005 car reaching 1m+ km in 2011 (6 years). For me, its very much possible. Now read what he said "...It basically runs 24-7 with 3 drivers, and it still has the original engine and transmission (no rebuilds) even after 1,239,00 km as a cab..." Nigerians still fail to understand that the longer your engine remains hot, the longer the life span of the engine. Thats why cars that do frequent long distance would always have a longer engine lifespan, while cars that run constantly in the city will have a shorter life span (unless the engine remains on and hot the whole day). Engines hate to run cold. Thats why engines dont last in Nigeria, because of this abuse of removing thermostat and connecting the radiator cooling fan(s) to run constantly on, which makes the engine to always run cold. Am not a Toyota or Asian car fan. Check my profile. My point here is to make you understand how durable a v6 engine can be, when properlly maintained and properly utilzed (taken for a long distance often), not minding the bad name Nigerians give v6 engines. Any good designed engine can get up to and beyond 1 million km. Its left for the owner to make it a reality. Ikenna. |
MOBBDEEP: Oga Siena & Ikenna, pls, what do you have about maintenance, repair, reliability & spare-parts availability of Golf MK 4 TDI (Diesel) series in Nigeria? You still don't get it. The maintenance issue with HDI engines is not peculiar to Peugeot diesel engines alone, its applicable to all diesels. If i have my way, i would have liked to have a diesel car, 406 HDI phase II as a daily driver. Its simple and easy to fix. Its more durable than their petrol counterparts. The thing is, Nigerians dont drive diesel cars. Thats why there is no availability of parts or insufficient parts available in Nigeria. If you can source for parts outside the country and do the diagnosis and repairs yourself, then you get and enjoy any diesel engine powered car in Nigeria. Ikenna. |
Oh; and I also noticed that the hose connecting the secondary air injection pump to the cylinder head cover is broken. Can that account for hard staring in the morning?? Will post pix tomorrow
Cold engine hard starting issue? Simply, your car engine is having over flooding or lean mixture issue (i believe), which would prevent the car from starting easily when engine is cold. Usually, such an injection issue can be caused by corroded wiring connectors, vacuum leak or faulty CTS. I would start with vacuum lines. Make sure that all the vacuum lines are well clamped. Any small leak or broken line will cause flooding of combustion chambers or leaning fuel entering the combustion chambers, which will hinder the work of spark plugs. A corroded engine or ECU wiring connectors could give a similar symptom. You will be surprised how the engine performance will be improved by cleaning the connectors once in a while. Peugeots are known for this flaw: easily corroded connectors or bad ground or earth. Disconnet the battery, clean cts connector with methylated spirited , likewise the ecu connectors and anyother sensor connectors you can reach. Loss of signal or partial signal of sensors to ecu due to corroded connector(s) would give such symptom. Have you checked the resistance and voltage values of the cts? Try the first 2 above. If the problem persist, i will then guide you on how to test CTS with DMM, to know how good the sensor is. Ikenna |

Speaking of A/C, i decided yesterday to check if everything was fine with all the A/C components. Unfortunaltely, my A/C compressor was leaking oil (probably freon) from the pulley end, which i believe, was caused by the raw cooking gas or something that looked like it the man used in flushing the A/C system, the last time he worked on it. I didnt know that that gas could be that strong until when i saw all the seals on the pressure hoses melted, after he had finished flushing the system. So i wasnt surprised when i saw oil around the compressor pulley yesterday. The cooking gas or whatever it was, must have damaged or weakened the seal, which gradually destroyed it. If I had known, i would have insisted that he use freon to flush the system (additional 2 cans would do) which was even cheaper than the gas he used. Now, it has cost me my compressor. I have myself to blame though. because i wasnt comfortable when he wanted to do the flushing job with that gas. But he said that it was what everyone has been using to flush a/c system. But of course, nothing stopped me from saying no and asked him to use freon instead. But now, its all clear to me. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE! Anyway, at Enugu then, i have seen people that rebuilded their A/C compressor. But here in Abuja, no none knows nothing. All they care about is " replacement". At least, the compressor still works, but I know soon, the gas will all soon leak from that spot and i will stop getting cold air. But i would prefer to replace the damaged seal than to replace the compressor, since i donot know the condition of the pistons in the used one to be purchased. Well, will put some calls and decide what to do or which to choose. Again, do not allow anyone to flush the A/C system with what you not comfortable with or what could be harmful to the system, no matter how dirty the system is. Let him use extra 2 cans of a/c gas for it. Ikenna |
MOBBDEEP: Quite on point on the inexpensiveness of the car. The price of the Toks were unbelievably low online for Europe ranging from £700-£3000.In as much as I like HDI engines, I would advice you to look into it very well before you jump in. HDI engine, by record, is the best French car diesel engine ever produced by Peugeot. The fuel economy is unbelievable. According to Wikipedia, in 2002, a 406 HDI set world record for the longest distance driven on a single tank of fuel (65 litres). The distance it covered with just 65 litres of diesel was 2,348,000 km. So much about French Technology people don't appreciate! Trust me, a 2.0 HDI 406 phase II is the best car for a daily driver. Who likes visiting fuel stations every now and then? A full tank of 406 HDI could carry one for more than 2 months, without remembering that fuel stations exist. The Diesel engine torque is what i find attractive, even though you wont get much hp (you gain some, you lose some). But who cares about the hp in the city? What is enjoyable on the city roads is "how good is the engine torque?". Not just the 406. The HDI in the new 508 average 65 - 70 mpg, when on highway. Can you imagine? But then, you wont get to enjoy your HDI 406 in Nigeria. Non-availability of HDI engine parts in Nigeria and no technical know- how mechanic on HDI to diagnose and repair the car for you when something goes wrong. Also, the cost of Diesel engne parts is nothing to write home about. Have you bothered to findout how much a HDI fuel pump and Glow plugs cost? They cost fortune. Fortunately, diesel engine is more reliable and durable than any petrol engine you can think of, no matter the number of cylinders of the petrol engine. A diesel engine has less electrics than the petrol engines, hence, more reliable. Unfortunately, diesel engines are designed to be serviced more often than the petrol engines, hence, expensive to maintain due to high cost of diesel engine parts compared to cheaper cost of petrol engine parts. Again, you gain some, you lose some. Its left for you to decide. Ikenna. |
I think he means an everyday car, not a priced jewel under lock n keys lol. @ post, if well maintained and serviced regularly, a car can easily hit 250,000miles
250k miles? You must be kidding me! I know of a Toyota Camry V6 that has exceeded 1 million miles, still on the original engine. Doubt me? I will prove it. Vehicles are designed to last as long as the owners want. How to make that happen depends on the owner's maintenance culture and manner of usage. Ikenna |
Hmm! If truly all these you listed failed at the same time in your SUV, then someone must be firing you from village. Just kidding! But seriously, you that suggested that he sells it, who go gree buy car without engine, gearbox, shock absorber and engine ecu? Abi na only the body im go buy? Unless the buyer needed it as a part car or wants to swap in his mechanicals from an identical suv to this one. Unless OP doesnt own the SUV yet, but wanted to how much they would cost, to know whether to venture or not. Ikenna |
I don't think the oil pressure switch/sensor will have anything thing to do with the issue. If the sensor fails, you will get oil pressure warning lit on the instrument cluster, unless the switch seal has failed/broken.
