Amaizu: Sometime ago Sienna in a fit suggested that a mechanic should be shot for an off the mark suggestion. Then i felt he was being too hard on our local techs.Today i really felt the same way.I discovered today that the mechanic who handled the 406 i recently bought removed the air filter in trying to resolve a matter that was obviously caused by a faulty MAF.Nigerian mechanics are a nightmare.

@Ikenna,can you help link me to Frenchbase or Sienna,i need to help a pal arrange for a good 607 Automatic Gearbox(V6),his car has been garaged for 8 months.see my e-mail ucheamaizu@yahoo.com or 08037756072.
Amaizu.
607 auto gearbox should be AL4 or 4HP20, which should be available as tokunbo here in Nigeria. Have you tried Mgbuka Obosi/Onitsha? It should be there.

If it was me, I would convert it to manual transmission, so that i wont have to garage the car again for another 1 year because of auto tranny failure, which will surely happen again.

The conversion to manual is even cheaper than replacing the failed auto tranny. But like i said, you will get the 607 auto tranny at Obosi. Its the same auto tranny in 406 V6 auto transmission. Likewise, the V6 engine in 607 is the same V6 engine in phase II 406 ( ES9J4S).

obamax: thank you everyone, did a scan according to the mechanic it was the nozzle that was bad which we changed and its working fine for now.
Congrats!

But, you are yet to tell us what was the culprit, because there is nothing in a car called nozzle.

To help you out. What does it look like? Like a spark plug or a cylinder?

Rudebwoy: According to the seller it starts but doesn't move smoothly so he was told to change the fuel pump. I chose to trust him cos he has a fleet of cars.
A lot of failing injection components will make a car move sluggishly, other than fuel pump. How are we sure his mechanics did a proper diagnosis to determine the cause of the sluggishness?

If i were you, I would scan the car first. He should permit you to do so, since he is your friend.

Am not trying to discourage you from buying thr car, if you have made up your mind, but you need to know what it will cost you to put the car in a shape that you will enjoy. Auto trans is a big turn off for me. Like i said, if you still want to buy the car, be ready to convert it to manual soon. Because it wont last you that long, if it hasn't started it issues already. Phase II 406 auto tranny got AL4 tranny. So i know how unreliable that tranny is. But if you are ready to be rebuilding it frequently, by replacing the 3 solenoids in the transmission (if you can find it here & one that can rebuild it for you), then you can keep the transmission, as long as it takes.

yungboss: on a first thought i would assume this is a sign of your fuel pump failing...speaking from personal experience...drove a 99 camry for a short period. but ultimately, a scan would suffice to reveal what the issue is..
The best way of knowing the conditions of fuel pump and FPR is by checking the fuel pressure with fuel pressure guage. The psi will tell you if the pressure is below factory or not.

I have made an attempt to purchase the pressure guage, but the one i saw was too fake to work. Am still working on getting one.

Rudebwoy: @ Ikenna, I am about buying a Naija used 406. I am yet to take a closer look at it, I don't know anything about 406 but all I know about that particular car is that it has a V6 engine, leather interior and auto transmission. The seller who is a friend told me that it has a bad fuel pump and a damaged ignition key that should be changed. I do not also know the year of manufacture for now but it looks like 2002 or 2003. do u think I will survive buying it? I also considered the price,250k
This faulty fuel pump thing. Are you saying the car doesn't start? Is the mechanic sure the issue is the fuel pump?

I wont buy a car that doesnt start and run, no matter how cheap. Unless am buying it as a part car or have diagnosed the car myself and believed it would be an issue that wont cost much to fix.

Auto transmission? Hmm! If you can afford to convert it to manual trans soon, then this has been settled.

Key switch replacement? Am not comfortable with this.

Ask him when last did he replaced the timing belt, tensioners and water pump, with proof. Because you do not want that belt to break on you. Its as good as kissing the engine good bye. Your findout will tell you if you can afford to do timing belt replacement or not, if purchased.

I would suggest you talk to him, since he is your friend. Let him be honest and tell you the issues with the car. I believe there could still be more.

Where is the car? I can come and check the car for you if its in Abuja.

Car TalkRe: Can Peugeot 207 1.4ltr Engine Be Swapped With A VW Golf Gti/nissan Primera by Ikenna351(m): 12:42pm On Sep 25, 2012
Is not a matter of if your car will start after swapping in the VW Golf engine. The car may start and run, but the entire electrics of the car will become a nightmare.

I believe your Lion has BSI (Body System Interface). It controls every body electronics of the car, including the engine ecu. So it maynot work properly, since it wont be connected to the Golf Engine ECU. BSI makes it difficult for newer Peugeots to be stolen, unless at gun point or with the key of that car. To start a Peugeot with BSI without its factory key, the Key switch components, engine ecu and BSI unit must be removed and another of those components removed from another BSI peugeot and swapped in. I dont see a thief stealing the 3 components a Peugeot 207 to steal another Peugeot 207, knowning it will take him hours to do the swapping before he could start the car.

Have you contacted Peugeot dealership about the ecu?

Car TalkRe: What To Do If You See A Pothole At 100km/hr Speed Or Above? by Ikenna351(m):
If you are here to learn how to drive on highway, then you should go back to driving school and start from there.

The topic simply means how to drive on highway. You dont learn driving by reading. Its a skill you learn by frrquent practice. The more you drive in the city as a beginner, the more you become skilled enough, an expert. A non expert behind the wheel or an inexperienced driver has no business with highway motoring.

I can understand why number of half baked drivers is increasing in Nigeria, since the introduction of auto transmission in today driving school. A learner will buy a car today, drive it in the city the next two days, and drive the car on highway the 3rd day. After all, he can accelerate, brake and steer the car from an object. Isn't that what driving is all about?

Learning driving with manual transmission forces one to actually imbibe the driving skill. A lot of learning takes place when a leaner is driving a manual tranny car, subconsciously. It will force you to drive as a leaner for a very long time in the city, which involves a lot of brain activity: mastering clutch engagements, when to shift to a higher and lower gears, when to use wheel brake or engine brake, etc. Unlike the auto trans that you will have only the accelerator and steering wheel to control, leaving you as dummy. The two weeks you spent in driving school are not enough to master these things. Dont expect an instructor to teach you skill he learnt after 20 years of driving in just 2 weeks.

Highway is not some exams where you read and write. It takes minutes to act on city roads, but it takes seconds for highway. You dont think on highway, you just act. Because you dont have that time to think, unlike the city driving. Its your subconscious that makes you do whatever you find yourself doing in any eventuality on highway. Its something you find yourself doing, without knowing how. Because its skill. Trust me, if you see a deep pothole on top speed, you wont remember what your instructor or someone has taught you to do in such circumstances. Everything happens in seconds. Poor judgement leads you to death or hospital. Good judgement keeps you going. All the theories you gathered as a learner ends mostly on the city roads. How you perfect your driving in the cities, is what will keep you alive first time you drive on highway.

Now to the question. Not all cars will behave the same way if you jump a deep pothole or swerve out of a pothole on top speed. Some cars are designed for highway and some are not. Likewise, the unique nature of Nigerian highways are not meant for everything on 4 wheels.

What i would do if i see myself in such situation, depends on how far or close it is, the speed am doing, and most importantly, what i am driving. Not all cars can take swerving on speed more than 100 km/h. Likewise, not all cars can maintain stability/balance when it jumps a deep pothole on speed more than 120 km/h. This where the body weight, tire sizes, suspension & ground clearance come in. This is why am strongly against people altering the factory suspension of their cars, and still expect the car to perform as designed when it meets such situation. Such things are put into considerations when designing highway cars by the manufacturers. Altering any of it, means the car is no longer safe or fit for high speed driving. It is that simple.

If you must drive on Nigerian highway as an inexperienced driver, dont speed upto 80 km/h. If you must drive a city car (a non handler) on Nigeria highway, dont speed beyond 80 km/h. With that speed, you can easily, brake or steer out of the pothole, without finding yourself and the car in the bush.

This will be the first time its going to take place in Nigeria, and will be maintained, courtesy of Nairaland. Posterity will remember us.

I also do believe that if we succeed in doing it this year, it will attract sponsors, even the car manufacturers will be interested in associating themselves in the events. Also, it will draw a lot Nigerians, non members, to Nairaland. No one will see us catching our fun and will like to be left out next time.

Ok. For those of us in Abuja, where do you think will be big enough to contain everyone?

Honestly, I initially planned to organise only Peugeot day or French car day, but i decided to bring it to the notice of other brand car owners and lovers. It seems everyone is interested. But, like someone has noted, a space that will be big enough to take Japanese cars is where the problem is. For American and Euro cars, that wont be an issue. But for Asian cars, thats something else.

So guys, what do we do? Do you want us to it by brands (e.g. Peugeot day, VW & Audi day, etc), by countries ( French car day, German car day, Japanese car day, etc) or simply Nairaland car day (all brands)?

The same is applicable to Lagos, Enugu & PH. If we can sort it out with any of the cities, the rest will take the same pattern.

So?
I will not call you names or anything like that.. I don't think you had any intention spewing any form of bigotry.. However, using 'business' to describe the Yoruba mans 'source of income' and using 'shop' to describe that of the Igbo man is still what it is, which is 'ethinic profiling'. Igbo men do own companies like Innoson whose business is not a 'shop' and employs across all ethinicities, yet you subconciously chose to describe the Igbo mans business with the word 'shop'.

I would advice you simply apologise for the heck of it. I personally don't hold it against you as I am almost certain you didn't have any ulterior motives in that post..

This thread is not about ethinic bigotry but to address the abuse of authority by certain Mods.
Apologise to who and for what reason? For mentioning shops with Igbos or for trying to correct him for saying all Yorubas employ only yorubas, using myself and my office as an example?

What is it with everyone about Igbos and shops? Is it not a fact anymore that its what Igbos are known for? Have you forgotten that Onitsha Main Market is used to be referred as the biggest market in West Market?

Fine. Let me break it down for you. Name all the big markets in Lagos. Go and do headcount there and come back and tell us, out of all the shops there, how many are owned by non Igbos. I stay in Abuja. I can tell you most of the shops in Wuse market, if not more than half, are own by Igbos. We are not even talking about Utako and Nyanya markets. What about Kano and other northern states? Like I said in my first post here, lets not go there.

Igbos are good in trade: buying and selling. All those storey buildings in Onitsha were not built by govt, but by individuals, what they made from Onitsha main market. Onitsha is what it is because of the Onitsha Main Market. We are good at it and am proud of it. If you are not, thats not my problem.

90% of Igbos that own shops employ their clan, village, town or state boys or girls to help in running the shops. Some are taken to come and learn trade (as apprentices) and would be settled after some years to start theirs. I grew up in the East, incase you want me to enlighten you more.

I dont want to derail this thread more than i have done. But i just needed to let you know that using shop for Igbos as an example was ok, because thats what we are known for, and there is nothing wrong with that. Besides, that am an Igbo does not mean i must paint everything about us, the Igbos, as perfect. We have our flaws, issues. Every tribe does.

Was there anything i said there that was a lie? Besides, since when did owning a shop become degrading? Have you taken time to findout how many of those shops are owned and run by graduates, Degree or Masters holders? I get it. You are still living in the past.

Not everyman is destined to make a living, a better one, with white colar job. The richest men on Earth are not salary earners, rather, businessmen. That a man wears tie everymorning to work, is not what gives value to the man, but what he was able to achieve at the end of the day, week or yearly.

Saintp: I use a 99 camry. I noticed that one sensor/wire around the injector mouth area was not plugged in. When i plugged it in and drove i noticed the car jerking intermittently. The mechanic said that particular sensor is responsible for steaming and since i'm driving without it i should not bother to put it back. I asked him to change it but he said the whole injector mouth has to be replaced.I'm having the feeling that driving without it is increasing my fuel consumption. My electrician said he will replace the injector mouth for me while my mechanic also wants to do the job. Please who should i give it to? and does it make sense changing the injector mouth? Please auto gurus help me out. Tanx.
There is nothing called Injector mouth. We need to know what it is first, to know what we are dealing with. If you can, take a picture of the "Injector Mouth" and attach it to this thread. We will take it from there.

If I guess, its Throttle body that you are refering to as Injector Mouth. But I need to be sure that I guessed right. Besides, no guess work with EFI.

I really find this car French car or Peugeot day interesting. We can all work it out, if we are interested. All we need is a venue, an open space. Then, either we get a sponsor or sponsors or we donate.i.e. Mr. A pledges to bring a create of can Guinness stout to the venue that day, Mr. B pledges to bring a create of can Malt, while Mr. C pledges 20 pieces of take-away plates/containers of rice, bottle waters, etc. We choose a day in November or December for the event.

We can choose to display cars like these:

1. Japanese cars
2. Korean cars
3. German cars
4. American cars
5. French cars
6. Others (comprises of other regions)

Or, we can choose to do it according to regions or brands, like US and Australia has been doing.

Its just a suggestion. But its a all about fun, coming together to talk about cars, display our Cars, feed our eyes, take pictures, eat and drink, depart and wait for another year for the get together.

We can still choose to remain faceless (not disclose our usernames here) when we gather.

Like i said, its just a suggestion. And please, no one is asking anyone to donate any money to anyone. You will come with whatever you want to share with others on that day.

Should it be strictly for car owners only? Should it be strictly for Naiaraland members only? Any other idea on how best to do this?

We can choose to organise it in these 4 cities: Abuja, Lagos, Enugu & Port-Harcourt.

So guys, can we do this?

Car TalkRe: What Is The Preferred Engine Type In Nigeria - Petrol Or Diesel, And Why? by Ikenna351(m):
@ info@lpf,

A Diesel engine gives more torque at lower rpm, extending the lifespan of the engine, since the more torque an engine has, the longer the life of the engine. Why? Because you don't have to rev a diesel engine up high to perform at it's peak. It produces high engine torque at low rev (good for city driving), the same with a short stroke petrol engine.

Diesel engines are expensive to manufacture and are expensive to rebuild, compared to petrol engines. But they are simple to fix. No electrics headache, which have become nightmares for newer petrol engine powered car owners. You have no sensor wahala to worry about. Because of the heavy weight of diesel engines and the nature of work they do, their engine mounts are stronger and more durable than the petrol ones. But very expensive to purchase or replace, when they finally give up.

Yes, Diesel engines dont have spark plugs and distributors, for the ones i know. But they do have glow plugs. The glow plugs last longer than the sparks plugs of the petrol engine. But the glow plugs are quite expensive to purchase, compared to cheap spark plugs. Anyone can replace a spark plug in a petrol engine. But removing glow plugs from a diesel engine is something you wont find interresting, if you succeed in removing it, anyway.

You get to enjoy less electric headaches with diesels. But God help you if air gets trapped in the fuel system. Bleeding the air out of the system is doable, as long as you dont mind the sweet smell of the diesel. Hard starting and stalling are symptoms of air in the fuel system of diesel cars. I dont know about the trucks.

Diesel engines last longer than you could ever imagine. Damn durable than the petrol engines. But cost fortune to rebuild if it dies, when not properly taken care of. Sometimes, its cheaper to simply replace the failed engine with another, which is also expensive to purchase, if are lucky to find one.

Since you are considering VW Toureg TDI, I would advice you conduct search on parts availability and knowledgeable mechanic on car/SUV diesels availability where you stay. If you stay in Abuja, I would advice you check the Berger office at Utako. Berger company uses only VW Golf TDI for the company cars. Findout where they repair theirs in Abuja. Though, its possible they will have company mechanics that take care of that. But you never know.

To learn more of Diesel disadvantages (sort of biased), read this: http://www.dogandlemon.com/articles/diesels

For a fair review of Diesel vs Petrol engine, read this: http://www.howtoanswer.com/difference-between-gas-and-diesel-engines-advantages-and-disadvantages--16.html

I would go for a Peugeot phase II 406 HDI 2.0 for a daily driver, if I have my way. It makes sense to fill a tank and not bother to visit fuel stations for the next 2 months of driving. Diagnosing and fixing it wont be an issue for me. 3 months of ownership, is enough to be an expert on diesel engines or cars, not just the Peugeot HDI's. Because am very good at studying every bit of a car system i own: what ticks and what makes what ticks in a car or an engine. The Talent is there, I cant help it!
@ Ikenna351 -

Hey I am a complete novice, and simply trying to learn, so forgive me, but I thought it was the other way round? That diesel engines are designed to go longer between services than petrol engines, therefore MAY end up cheaper over time? With no spark plugs, coils and other periodic maintenance parts to worry about and only regular , how is it that diesel ends up needing servicing more? Perhaps you meant that parts are more expensive?

Also thanks for directing my attention to this thread!
No, they don't go longer than the petrol engines before service. When i said service, it means frequent engine oil, oil filter and fuel filter changes between major maintenance than the petrol counterparts. If a petrol engine of Golf petrol version engine oil is supposed to be changed every 10,000 kms, then the Golf TDI engine oil will required to be changed every 5,000 kms or even less.

I will explain more in the proper diesel thread: https://www.nairaland.com/617749/what-preferred-engine-type-nigeria/2
Right, so given the partial removal of the "fuel subsidy" and the imminent complete removal, may I suggest that this thread be restarted? The cost issue is now moot, not only does petrol now carry a retail price of N97 in large cities, it is actually N140 in most parts of Nigeria! In addition, there seems to be an improvement in the power situation, which could logically lead to a reduction in diesel prices from its current N97 (at least at Forte Oil, Falomo)! Also, long petrol lines at gas stations is now a common sight, with constant threats of NUPENG strikes.

Now what do the experts have to say about the original debate? I am really keen on this thread as I am considering a VW Toureg TDI. My only hesitation comes from a niggling concern about travelling long distance with a diesel powered vehicle - how do I guarantee the availability of diesel when needed on a drive from Lagos to Abuja, for instance? Perhaps carry gallons of cooking oil? That is a more appealing thought than gallons of diesel in my trunk...

BTW, who in the world came up with the the stupid nomenclature - PMS, AGO etc? Just plain silly, lazy and non-intuitive. Whatever happened to just simple petrol / gas, kerosene, diesel etc? Those are just as easily abbreviated, if needed.
Go through page 1 of this thread below first:

PoliticsRe: NAIRALAND MODERATORS: Please List The Mods You Dont Like And Why.. by Ikenna351(m):
SEUN WHY IS IT THAT YOU ONLY USE Yorubas AS YOUR MODERATORS, AND PLEASE DONT TELL ME ABOUT THOSE FEW REJECTED IGBOS YOU CHOSE WHO HAVE ALL LOST THERE IDENTITIES AND ARE TRYING TO BE MORE Yoruba THAN AWO. (I DON'T KNOW WHERE AND HOW MANAGE YOU PICK THEM)
WHY IS IT THAT EVERY Yoruba BUSINESS ONLY EMPLOY Yorubas. THATS WHY THEY DON'T GROW!
Am the moderator of Car Talk section, yet an Igbo. Check my profile, go through my posts, my identity is in tact. My username speaks for itself. I work with a Law Firm, own by 3 Yorubas, yet am an Igbo. I didn't introduce myself as a Yoruba before i was taken to work for them. Yes, it can be difficult to work with Yorubas sometimes, as colleagues, but got nothing to do with the employers or management. If you are good enough to make or bring in more profit and growth for a company, you will be taken. No entrepreneur risk his business on sentiments or tribe. There might be few cases of Yorubas employing only Yorubas, but don't generalize it. Or are you saying other tribes are left out? How many shops, own by Igbos, have you entered and met apprentices that are non Igbos? Lets not even go there.

Nigerian Polity/economy is what it is today because of weak institutions empowered to check and punish offenders of corruption. If there is no punishment, offenders will increase. I could remember the day i lost patience in traffic jam and drove on pedestrain route to beat traffic. I got caught and after spending 3k to get myself out of the situation, i swore never to break that rule again.

Car Talk section of this forum is simply created for discussions: issues with our vehicles, tips on maintenance, how to fix our vehicles ourselves (DIY), what it takes to keep vehicles on the road, and other related matters. Any form of advert attracts ban. The rule is quite simply. And I made sure everyone knows it by sticking it on the frontpage of the section. Even if you are my friend, if you break that one rule, i will ban you. You can hate me for that. But someone has to enforce the law, the rules, the regulations guilding an entity or such.

When this Garri thing started, the followers also invaded Car Talk section. I would hide such posts when i see them. They saw what i was doing and started reposting the hidden posts, over and over again. What do you expect me to do then? Send them love letters, begging them not to repost their Garri posts again? I had no option than to start banning usernames with Garri post or thread. One even came back with another user name and said he would continue to unleash his Garri thing in the Car Talk section with his hundreds of username, as long as i keep banning him. Well, i couldnt help it but ban the username for 2 years, i think. Just let to let him know, i was ready for him. Am sorry, Car Talk is adult section. A seection for serious minded persons that wants to learn. Even when a kid visits the section, he/she will have a lot to learn. And to keep that going, there has to be a sanity. Allowing vehicle adverts in that section will make it uninteresting to visit and eventually, may kill the section. We fought hard for it before it was created out of Autos section, which has turned into ad section. I wont let that happen to Car Talk section, even if i will be hated for it.

Political Science is my discipline and Politics section should be my favourite. But thats not the question. All I see in Politics section is hate, abuses, insults, etc. Meaningful topics, but with uneducating posts. This is my first time of posting in this Politics section. I expect to see threads where Political & Economic theories are modified, suggested and discussed. But what do we see here? Tribal hate threads, etc. We are so good in imitatting other entities: socially, economically and politically, even religiously. Yes, even though Aristotle posited that "Imitation is the mother of Invention", but it doesnt mean you wont modify what you have imitated to suit your enviroment, to make it work. It might work for US, but it maynot work here. You just have to find one that works, after some modifications. These are the things the Politics moderators should encourage and discourage all these hates and insults.

I would criticize a post, but not the poster. Its what Political Analysts do. Lets stop blaming moderators. Each section have old and constant members. This is where you come in. Make your section an interesting one, with the way you argue or present your suggestions. With that, moderators wont have any reason to ban anyone, no matter how biased he or she is. Moderators are humans. He could take one or two insults, but don't expect him to take the third one. He would react. He is not Jesus. But we do our best to imitate Him (me and my imitating thing!).
