Good to knw considering dat I have a 206.

Another general question, should we be using water for our radiator? What is d long term effect of using water
I want to switch to using only coolant. A 4litre Abro jar is 2k5.
Some pple buy alrdy mixed coolant and add to d water in their radiator.
I think its more effective to buy a 4litre jar of alrdy mixed coolant only without using water at all.
What is written on the label is what matters. We have pre-mixed and non pre-mixed.

Since you are using Peugeot, I would advice you use TOTAL coolant instead, not ABRO. TOTAL is a French company. French cars (like Peugeot & Renault) are factored in in all their products or while producing them. If you checked their site, you will see that they recommended Peugeot for all their products. There was a time I bought pre-mixed TOTAL coolant. But i cant find the pre-mixed anymore, have been seeing non-premixed (TOTAL) instead. Check your owners manual to know if its 50:50 or 70:30. It will be safer to do 50:50 if you cant find the factory mixing percentages.

Lion owners, read this below:

2000 Peugeot 206 s16 2.0 from Australia and New Zealand

The safest small car in the world

General Comments:

This car saved my life.

I was hit head on at 100km an hour on a southern road in New Zealand. The other driver slipped on the ice, crossed the center line, and was killed in the accident.

The front of my 206 disintegrated taking all the impact. The engine dropped below the car as it should do. I walked out of the car with only fractures. The crash investigators said they would recommend Peugeot to everyone they met.

This is a seriously safe car.

Car TalkRe: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by Ikenna351(op):
Aqva: Questions for d gurus. My cars temp rises to above 90 before d fan picks. is it normal?
My mech says we shld connect d fan direct. Is it safe? I jst changed my termostat and it still climbs a little above 90. Maybe 95 or so.
Does dat qualify as overheating?
90 C is the normal operating temp of Peugeots. Your fan is not suppose to spin at the 90 C, since thats the best temp for your engine. The fan will only start spinning when the temp guage needle exceeds 90 C (a little bit above 90). The fans will spin at full speed to push heat or suck/pull heat out of the already hot radiator, which will reduce or bring down the temp of the coolant back to 90 C and goes off again, pending when the temp exceeds 90 C again. Your car engine temp would only exceed 90 C when the car is stationary and the engine is running or when you are in traffic jam. But as long as the car is in motion, doing more than 40km/h or so, the fans will remain off. You can drive from Abuja to East (about 8 hrs journey ,depending on the speed) and your fans wont spin throughout the journey, as long as you donot meet traffic jam or slowed down below 40km/h. It is the thermostat that controls or determines the spinning of the fan. In fact, thermostat controls or regulates the entire engine cooling system. Remove the thermostat and kiss your engine good-bye. Only time will tell when the engine will finally pack up, just because of absence of one little component, the thermostat.

But do know that most Peugeots have two fan speeds: speed 1 and speed 2. Speed 1 spins very slowly, not enough to suck or push heat out enough from the radiator. Speed 2 is the full speed. When the speed 2 engages, the sound or unique noise of the fan will tell you that the fans are on speed 2. Peugeot electric fan speed 2, especially 406, has a unique sound. No other brand fans sound like that. Even from afar, you could tell by the sound of radiator electric fan on speed 2, if the approaching vehicle is Peugeot or not, without even looking at the vehicle.

Am not surprised. Afterall, car thieves like anything with Toyota badge. I didnt even know that Honda and Nissan are been admired by the thieves too. Asian car owners take note. You better go and insure yours, because even car securities dont stop them from taking what they admire, without the owners permission. If you cant insure, start with car tracker.

Euro cars are turn off to thieves. Afterall, they dont have resale value, so who will buy it from them and how much will they make out of it. But even Japanese gwuragwura, thieves dey carry am!

Car TalkRe: Peugeot: Cars With Attitude! by Ikenna351(op):
Aqva: @Ikenna, sending the BSI to Uk is a long thing. It means my car would be grounded for weeks if not months.

Unto other matters, my Ac leaks gas but nobody is sure from where. I have changed d compressor seal but yet it still leaks.
The issue now is that the Ac guy wants to check the evaporator located in the dashboard. Is it safe to allow a road side Ac man take down the dash? Wouldn't it affect somethings when he couples it back? The dash is quite sensitive. Would have taken it to Peugeot workshop but i'm sure it will cost a fortune. Advice needed please.
A/C evaporator is the last place to look for a gas leak, considering that dashboard will have to comedown to get to the evaporator.

My BABY was having A/C gas leak since i got the car. Myself and an A/C fellow checked every possible a/c components that could be causing the leakage, but couldnt find the leak. Each time i took the car to him to refill the system, he would change all the seals, yet the gas would leak less than a month, sometimes it would last only a week. Someone suggested that my evaporator could be leaking. Fortunately, the evaporator is in the engine bay, not inside the car, under/behind dash. So getting to it wouldnt be an issue. But the A/C man informed me that the evaporator used in 505 is made of copper, and that since he started doing the A/C work (he is really an elderly man), he had never seen a 505 evaporator leaked gas, since copper doesnt rust. Only if its broken, which would only happen if the car had an accident that would get to the dashboard. So with that confidence, i didnt bother to touch the evaporator. I went on my own and purchased an expansion valve. As soon as he replaced it for me and refilled the gas, the leakage matter was closed. Its 3 months now and the A/C chills like ice from then till date. To be very honest with you, my windows have never come down for the 3 months now (thank God for the Climate Control System) & I pray it remain so.

Now, I dont know what the 206 evaporator is made of. If its not copper, the leakage could be from there. But its very easy to know if the evaporator is leaking or not without bringing any dashboard down (which could be a nightmare to fix back). Have you noticed any oil on any of the front flow mats or under the mats? Dont confuse it with hydraulic from clutch master cylinder, if yours is leaking i.e. if the clutch system is hydraulically controlled. A/C gas oil should be brownish and sticky. If the evaporator is leaking, you will find oil on the front floor. Also, you can as well findout if evaporator is leaking via the A/C water waste line. Check the hose that water comes out from under the car, when the A/C is on, to know if the water coming out is sticky or mixed with oil. You will know when you touch it. If you find oil on the floor or waste line, then am sorry, your dash must come down.

One thing is to pull out dash (which could be very simple and easy), but to fix it back, with all the wiring connectors or plugs properlly pushed back to the correct switches scattered all over the dash, is another matter entirely. If care is not taken, you might end up not having all the switches working, after re-installation of the dashboard. Newer cars dashboard are not for anyhow rewire to tamper with. Know and trust who you are giving it to pull down for you. IF i were you, I would do that myself, taking pictures while disconnecting the connectors behind the switches. If you cant do it, then, you will have to take the risk and give it to one you have confidence that could do it.

I dont know if your car expansion valve is in the engine bay or under the dash too? If you can see and touch the valve, run or rub your hand round it. If you touch any oil, then there is your culprit.

Goodluck.

Are they for sale or just personal properties?
I am asking this because, maintaing A BMW E36 and Lancer Vboot 2005 here in Nigeria maintains a healthy/disturbing column on my bank account here in Nigeria where i pay no tax for them..
With due respect, how does this your post relates to this topic? Since when does his private life becomes your business? That I can't afford to own a brand new car, does not mean one that does is silly. A family man can have more than 2 vehicles, if he can afford and maintain them and doesnt owe anyone any explanation.

Am not holding brief for anybody. But we need not to take things for granted. Lets stay on the thread and respect each and everyone's private life. I would have removed this post, but i left it to use it as an example. Next time, i wont leave such post to last a minute, once i see it.

Zaynee63: I use the camry and I have a friend/neigbour that uses the babyboy. I cover 50miles of driving everyday and he covers less than 40miles. I use just N4,500 fuel throughout a 5 working day week while he uses N6,500-7000 fuel for the same period.

For fuel economy and easier maintenance, go for the camry. Though, I think the Babyboy seems stronger and classier. undecided
Thats a wrong method to compare fuel economy of 2 vehicles, since one could have an injection issue and the owner drives it in that condition without the knowledge of the issue or having the knowledge of the issue. Did you ask him about the condition of his car injection system? He might not even be aware, since under inflated tyres or use of non specified factory tyre(s) could also hinder the economy. Even the use of water (only) in the cooling system would make the car run thirsty. Toyota is known for reliability worldwide, but not for best fuel economy.

If you really want to compare the 2 cars fuel economy, take both cars for scanning, fix any injection/electric issue(s) detected, return everything on the 2 cars to factory(tyres, radiator electric fan connection, coolant, etc) and then compare, as long as both have the same transmission (auto or manual), number of engine cylinders, naturally aspirated engine or turbo engine.

BSI RESET PROCEDURE:

Peugeot BSI (Body control) failure

Peugeot and Citroen BSI (Body Control) units are very prone to failure. Symptoms include no indicators, ignitions lights on with no key, wildly incorrect cluster readings and complete non start. These units are own unit rebuilds which removes the need for coding.

Try the BSI Reset procedure as this may cure your faults:

Put the driver's window down, lift the bonnet and ensure all equipment is switched off.

Ensure all doors are closed and remove key from the ignition.

Wait for 3 minutes, disconnect the vehicle battery and wait 15 seconds.

Reconnect the vehicle battery, wait a further 10 seconds (do not open doors.).

Switch on the side lights through the driver's window.

Switch on the ignition and check system's functionality.

Hold lock button on key down for 10 seconds.

Remove key open & close door test central locking system.

Start the engine and complete the system's check.

Failure to follow this procedure could result in incorrect operation of many BSI related items.

Ladipodeal: Gurus in the house pls help. Will appreciate ur suggestions.
Honestly, you brought the problem upon yourself. EFI engine is not a carbureted one. You should have checked for the compatibility of the ECU and harness before buying that replacement. There is no cut corners with an EFI engine. You should have waited, saved enough and purchased the exact engine in the car.

The auto rewire or whoever did the scanning was right that you either drive the car with the MIL permanently on or you replace that engine with factory one.

Modifications can be done in EFI system to work with another swapped in different engine, but you will need to know your onions. Its more or less a conversion.

Though, ECU can be tricked, to believe that a sensor is still attached, like the o2 & CTS and run without them well. But i dont know if such can be done with cam position sensor. Lets hear from Siena, Trac, Sultaan and other experts opinion on this. I really dont have solution to this issue.

Below is from Aussiefrogs. For those that have AL4 transmission in their Lions (automatic gearbox in phase II 406, 206, 307,etc), it can be useful to you.

The AL4 - A Good News Story

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just wanted to share my AL4 adventure ...

I drive a 206CC with the dreaded box in it, and at around 115k it started doing the dreaded THUMP into limp-home mode - usually first thing in the morning, going up the massive hill that is my morning drive into town / work. A stop-and-restart once it was warm would reset the box and fix the issue (got quite good at this while still moving in traffic - naughty I know), but it never really got any better ...

At 145k, the local auto specialist diagnosed a solenoid fault and advised replacing both solenoids ...

Not afraid of a bit of mechanicking, I drained the box, pulled the valve block off, stripped it down, flushed everything, reassembled it KEEPING but SWAPPING the ORIGINAL solenoids over, and put it all back together.

Now at 165k, never had a recurrence, and the box changes like a newbie.

And the magic 'fluid' that is recommended? Try Penrite ATF FS - it works great in my box. The label says it can be used where 'BMW LT71141' spec is recommended ... same same ... and it's easy to get your hands on.

And it's red - like all ATF should be - lol.

Cheers

Hi everyone,

I was made the moderator of this section today, 22/08/2012. I had no clue it was coming. But its an opportunity for me to serve and that am grateful for. I will do my very best. Its a promise.

We know how we struggled before we could get this car discussion section. But its beginning to be abused, when its not even upto 6 months it was created.

Anyone that makes the mistake of starting an advert thread, posting sales or promoting sales in this section henceforth, consider the username banned. I have not banned anyone yet, so that no one would claim he had no idea the consequences.

Also, let stop creating topics to enquire about vehicle prices in Car discussion section. We will be inviting adverts in such threads by doing so. The thread will be moved to the appropriate section, the Autos section.

One can post a link of an advert in a thread, to make a point/check an advert or refer one to the posted link, depending on the nature of the thread.

Let us make this section a community and not discourage us from joining and learning how to keep our vehicles on the road and in good shape. We can only achieve it if there is sanity.

Do all your adverts, post your sales or make your enquiries on vehicle or parts prices in Autos section https://www.nairaland.com/autos, not in Car Talk section, please.

samoy: Ikenna, pls help! My lion displays "ABS fault" when d engine is started.
If I may ask, does the ABS lit goes off seconds after starting the car or it remains on till whenever you switch off or kill the engine?

You can still findout if the ABS still works by testing it. Take the car to an isolated smooth road, race the car and quickly depress and hold the brake pedal down. If the ABS still works, you will feel vibration on the brake pedal. And do not lift your foot or pump the pedal. Just hold it down, while it vibrates. If the none of the wheels locks, then your ABS is still in tact. You can as well try and steer the car a little bit, to know if you will experience body roll. ABS doesnt make a car stops quicker or reduces the stop distance, rather, it increases stop distance. ABS is there to help you steer away from an object before you effortlessly when find yourself in an unpleasant situation, unlike a non ABS car that will lock the wheels and refuses to steer away from an object, car or human being you are about hit or send to early grave. Thats the advantage.

But if you are not that good with the wheels, please dont try the ABS test i explained above. I no dey o!

samoy: Ikenna, pls help! My lion displays "ABS fault" when d engine is started.
Wheel sensors!

Did you work on any of the wheels recently? If yes, then you have your answer. ABS wheel sensor do have settings (factory gap). I f you tamper with it without gapping it properly, you will get the lit on the instrument cluster. Meaning, your brake will still work, but non anti-lock.

You can start by pulling out the ABS wheel sensor connectors (4 of them), check fro corrosion, clean if any corrosion and connect back to the sensor well. Corrosion of the connectors will lit the ABS warning bulb on the instrument cluster.

Also make sure that all the ABS wheel sensors are well tight on their various locations. I just hope it hasnt come to gapping, unless the owners workshop manual states yours dont need to be gapped. Start with the sensors connectors cleaning first. It could simply fix the problem.

Aqva: Ikenna, hope u had a swell day?
My 206 has central lock problem. The BSI seems to be the issue. I fixed a new BSI and d central lock started working but the car won't start because of the immobilizer and it has to be recoded to work with my car's ECU. Did some online research and found out that a BSI cannot be recoded. The only option is to buy a new BSI and ECU from the same car and transfer to my car before it will work. How true is this? Isn't there some guru that can actually program the new BSI to work with my car?

Another unfortunate thing is that the new BSI i put in my car briefly changed my mileage from 44,000 to 145,000. I read that fixing a new BSI changes the reading of the mileage. Imagine my car that is pretty low on mileage now taking on the mileage of an older car. Can i get someone to reprogram the mileage? The new BSi wasn't even used because d car won't start, it was just fixed to test if the central lock would work.

Honestly, this newer model of cars have too much wahala. My central lock controls my boot and d boot has no external opener, therefore my boot no longer opens and i have no access to my spare tire. I really feel like selling the car.
Yes. You are right. Newer cars have too much wahala. The newer a car, the more electrics. The more electirc a car becomes, the less reliable and more complex to diagnose and fix. Days were gone when EFIs have less electronics. Then, a sensor could do a dual or various functions, which makes it easier to troubleshoot and cheaper to maintain. But now, more electronics are added to make EFIs more efficient, but suffers reliability on the other hand.

I did come accross a company (online) that repairs BSI unit. But i didnt save their contact (that i regret). It would have been the best solution than replacing the BSI unit with the engine ECU. I dont know if it could be possible to reprogram the newly purchased BSI unit to work with the engine ECU. But even if its possible, i doubt the possibility of finding a place it can be done in Nigeria. Have you tried Peugeot dealership/service centres? You never know. Also, have you asked the question or start a thread in Aussiefrogs forum on this your BSI issue?Trust me, you will get all you need to know about BSI in Aussiefrogs. There are so many Puegeot gurus there.

The truth is, I dont really know much or have much information on hw to troubleshoot BSI issues. Why? Because my 2 Lions are non-BSI. But whenever i replace my 605 v6 with phase II 406 v6, the BSI issues wont be alien to me anymore. I love such challenges and i do overcome them via DIY, as they come.

About the mileage issue, since some Nigerian car dealers tamper with vehicle mileage before selling, then that shouldnt be a problem to you. you just need to find one of them that can roll back yours for you. I dont know how they do it.

But seriously, why would a car not not have an external boot opener? Why should i depend on electric to open my car trunk? So that means if my car battery drains completely, i cant have access to the boot? Why didnt they also do the same with the bonnet, since they believe electrics are more reliable than mechanicals? Of course,if the car battery drains flat too, one wont be able to open the bonnet to even replace the dead battery. This thing with newer cars! So unrelable.

Something is definitely wrong with one of the pulleys: crankshaft, alternator, a/c compressor or PAS pump. Or it could be that the pulleys are not aligned. Did you replace alternator or anything that connects to engine belt before this problem started? If the belt is not straight because of the non aligned of the pulleys, you will be havin this kind of issue too. No matter how inferior an engine belt is, it wont break as yours has been doing.

Also, i hope your mechanic is not stretching the belt too much while adjusting it?
Hey All, I have a Peugeot 307 2.0 L petrol Automatic pre-facelift and during a routine servicing last week, i found some oil in the air inflow hose (the hose that connects the air filter to the throttle body). On running the engine with the PCV (breather) hose disconnected, i found that it was spewing a fine oil mist into the air hose. Is that normal? Also i sit normal that the throttle body be just a tiny bit oily?
if t´he above are problems, then what could be the possible causes. My Haynes repair manual is not very helpful, and an online search did not reveal much either. I also did not find much in this regard on Aussiefrogs forum (I´m a member).
I understand the whole concept of positive crankcase ventilation, but my question remains-Is it normal to find engine oil in the air inflow tube?
Ikenna, your knowledge is needed.
Yes, its normal. Thats why the throttle body & IAC (Idle Air Control valve) need to be cleaned once in a while, to remove the accumulated oil from the crankcase, which would make the two components sticky and not open and close properly, hence idle issues. But the oil shouldnt be much. If its that much, then there is a problem, which can be caused by a blocked vacuum line that allows engine to breath properly.

On my BABY, there is another vacuum line attached to the main vacuum line from the oil filler cap. The attached line bypasses such oil from getting to the air box- MAF - Throttle body tube, and take the oil direct to throttle body, to prevent the oil from touching MAF (since oil is a main killer of MAF) on the throttle body tube. Hope I didnt sound Abracadabra here? grin

karaye: What is immobilized in Peugeot ikenna ,
This has been treated. Start from the begining, you will find it.

You can as well google it. Its a peculiar issue with with 406 phase 2, due to the BSI (Phase 1 is non-BSI).

From what i have gathered, people trigger on the immobilizer lit on the Instrument cluster by themselves, out of ignorance. Stop slamming your 406 doors. It could trigger it. Close the door(s) gently. Remember, this is not 504. Always make sure the doors are closed before switching on the ignition or clanking/starting the engine/car. The BSI unit in the phase 2 406 is very sensitive.

Also, avoid removing your car battery terminal heads, every now and then (especially for those that like lending people their car battery). Only do that when you have no other choice. A small spark on the battery terminal heads could damage the BSI unit and immobilized the car.

Jonwesley: Ikenna! Do u know what? I really enjoyed ur write up. I just changed my peugeot 406 old model engine when i noticed on my car some of the signs u earlier mentioned. In my case the smoke was dark, but my engine oil level was never ok then. Just drying all the time. I gambled with the engine replacement since i was not sure of the state of the Tokunbo engine and it appears i ve got a brand tokunbo car.The engine started with all the things it came with, not even a plug was changed, except that new engine oil that was added. But i'm at a loss now as to why my temperature is always increasing beyond 90. When ever it happens like this, it's most likely the water level in the radiator has gone down which i will have to fill up back making it come down to normal temperature. But shortly after some days, the rise in temperature and water loss will happen again. Most annoying is that there is no where that i see water leaking. Pls can u help me with what to do about this? I wld be pleased to get ur tips on dis again. Thanks.
Can you repost this in Peugeot thread? I will make out time to treat it there. Am at work now. But others can as well help you here, in this thread.

WinkWrld: Do noT repair! Never make thatt mistake, no matter what your mechanics tell you. Just save and get a replacement.
Engines are meant to be rebuilt, not replaced, hence, OEM & aftermarket.

That you cant source for original engine parts and having a knowlegeable mechanic that can rebuild an engine to factory, doesnt mean engines are not meant to be rebuilt. Engines are rebuild to run like new, unlike the used engines (tokunbo) which you do not know how the original user used it.

What everyone should be asking is the cause of engine failure or blue smoke from the car tail, which comes down to us, as the root cause, in most cases. How do I mean:

1. Run-in period, unless stated in the owners manual that the engine has been broken in before purchase (Ignorance)
2. Lack of interest in keeping our vehicles in good shape (Maintenance culture)
3. Bad driving style (Ignorance)
4. Bad/wrong engine oil
5. Removal and use of engine without the cooling system thermostat
6. Use of water only for the cooling system.
7. Constant spinning of radiator electric cooling fan(s) (Altering the factory connection).
8. Revving of engine at cold start
9. etc.

I wished I have time to explain what I listed above. If you dont know how you contribute in killing your engine, that means you will keep replacing or rebuilding your vehicle engine, over and over again. A vehicle that has been used outside the country for 15 - 20 years, by your fellow human being, as soon as it enters Nigerian shore, the engine dies within 2 - 3 years. Ever bothered to ask your self why.

I will prefer a 10-15 years old car, used in the western world, than buy a used Brand new 3 years old car used in Nigeria. Why? 98 percent of vehicles bought brand new in Nigeria suffer lack of running in period, which reduces life-span of an engine, big time.

Please, do know that am not a mechanic. The knowledge I have is what i gathered working on my car(s) and years of experience of driving. So, I maynot be able to fix all Injection related problems, without first studying the Injection & Electrical system of the car in question. I work with Electrical and workshop manuals.

Anyway, I look forward to meet you.

mecussey: Thanks Ikenna, it may be sky blue like you said, not really sure. Its like the kind of cloud we see in the sky on a very sunny day. One thing is that the oil level goes down frequently. I don't just trust my mechanic in terms of competence, he said if he changes the rings that it could carry me for another 6 months. I am just afraid settings are gonna change should they touch it. I am sure he was the cause after servicing the engine with a very bad oil. Anyways, what do you advice, he said engine is 75k and rings 20k, of course I dont have 75k at the moment
That depends.

If your car is Japanese/Asian, then I would advice that you continue using the engine in that condition until you can afford to replace the engine (tokunbo). Rebuilding it wont even last upto the 6 months the mechanic has told you. Its possible that your engine walls have worn, meaning, you may have to machine/bore it, replace the pistons with bigger size ones and the rings as well. Besides, am yet to see original japanese piston and rings in Nigeria, unless you source them from outside the country.

If your car is Peugeot, I would advice you rebuild, which will serve you more than the tokunbo engine. Why? All peugeot engines (except NT9E & NT9EA) have Piston Liners, also known as Sleeve. Peugeot only have standard Piston and Sleeve in the market. An original set (Piston & Sleeve), will serve you for years, I mean, years not months, before it could show you sign of failure. That I have experienced. I can vouch for it. But rebuilding a Peugeot engine with original parts could cost more than a tokunbo engine (depending on the extent of wear in the engine, like a failed crankshaft). But it will run like NEW, unlike the used engine(tokunbo). You can get original set of Peugeot Piston & Piston Liners from various Peugeot dealerships scattered everywhere, not from the spare parts market, unless you have a seller that is honest to you.
