Oma ilaje Omuro mo gha rin oh....ilepete re se Ile ba mi

Monarchy: ilajes practice the edo(benin) system of monarchy:
Olu - the royal throne
Oliha/Asogbon - the chief priest
Yasere - the king spokesperson...and so on

CUISINE: The ilajes stand out from the yorubas in terms of cuisine. Our major food is pupuru(more like fufu but u pound it) with orugbo(black soup). We also have what we call ogolale- a special delicacy made from unripe plantain and yam in the form of porridge.
I'll add some other details later

CareerRe: Should He Leave His Current Job? Help by Ilaje44(m): 6:37pm On Nov 19, 2015
olafunny:
Hi nairalanders,

A brother, who is currently working with a company in ibadan and also stays in ibadan, has got himself in a condition which he needs nairalanders to be of help.

The issue is;

where he's working nw, he's been paid something above 80k sha which is obviously not the worth of the job and his kind of person cuz he has his ph.D. But because of the situation in the country, he decided to stick to the job till he gets another one.
His hustle paid off last week friday when he got another job in Lagos and the pay is above 130k with other monthly allowances. According to him, he loves his current job as it's less stressful and makes him closer to his family. He considers Lagos as a place that is very stressful and will probably cause him to relocate. But the pay is higher.

Now, he's thinking of threatening his current boss with his new job nd pay, maybe the boss might increase his salary and beg him to stay. He is staying with his younger brother in one of the houses his father built before he died. So he doesnt pay house rent with his salary. All that will change when he get to Lagos.

What he wants Nairalanders to do for him is to advice him whether;

-to go for the new job since the pay is high and try to get used to Lagos situation and since he is a ph.D holder, he might higher opportunities from there.

-to stay and continue with his current job since his expenditures are far low.

-to threaten his boss to increase his salary. What if the boss dismisses him? He might end up being in where his mind doesn't.

Thanks in advance.
Threatening his boss for pay rise would be a very foolish thing. If I were the boss, I would simply call his bluff, and if he does not go, I would see to it that his disloyal ass is kicked.

Before he decide to take up the 130k job in Lagos, I hope he does his due diligence, and take into consideration that the cost of living in Lagos is considerably higher than that of Ibadan.

Ego/Igho both come from Portuguese. That word and all its variants are not ours to claim.
So you're insinuating that the people had no word for money until the arrival of the Portuguese?

Can you please tell us the Portuguese word for money, and explain how it became "ego", "igho"? Ogho definitely has nothing to do with Portuguese. Cowry used to be a legal tender in many African societies prior to the coming of the Europeans, and it is called "eyogho" (eyo ogho) in Ilaje.

Ewa in Yoruba means beans and same in Urhobo, but there are Urhobo words for beans which are peculiar to "Us" i.e the ésha is a different specie of beans while the white one is called "iré". So depending on your dialect/part of Urhoboland you hail from they could mean one and same or different, as for me I am from Olomu and iré and ésha are distinctly different.
And "iree" is a type of beans also in Yoruba.

Igho, can't be Igboid since the Itsekiri, Ilaje and almost all eastern Yoruboid groups (Ondo state) call money "ogho". The "g" is silent in "ogho" unlike in "ego" where you hear it loud and clear.

Igho probably pronounced "e hoe" with silent g
Ego is pronounced "ay go"
Ogho is pronounced "oh hoe" with silent g

EducationRe: Laptop Fee In UNN Causes Hardship Among Students (photos) by Ilaje44(m): 8:35am On Nov 08, 2015
ayoolanr:
Well, this is done even in Institutions in the US for example, it's just given a different name...like Technology fee....But this is for maintenance of computer labs that students use for their coursework and have access to anytime! But i guess in UNN's case they actually purchase the laptops for the students?
Hear yourself! You get what you pay for in the States. This is not so in Nigeria. The policy is just one of the numerous tactics of extortion. In your example, the contributive fees you paid are toward maintaining infrastructures. And if you're asked to pay for a gadget, you can be sure you'll get it cheaper buying it through your school than buying it in the market on your own. And most important of all, you're not FORCED to buy the gadget from the school. But in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. If they want to increase school fees, let them be transparent about it instead of this ridiculous extortionate tactic.
EducationRe: Laptop Fee In UNN Causes Hardship Among Students (photos) by Ilaje44(m): 8:15am On Nov 08, 2015
OgaInnocent:
This issue has obviously lingered. UNN belongs to the Fed. Govt.; let them intervene.

Let me summarise: UNN VC, simply known as Dr. Ozumba compelled all the newly admitted students of UNN to pay 70,000 naira as Laptop Fee which the school will supply. The fee has caused a lot of hardship in the new intakes as it escalated the school fees to 170,000 naira.

Acceptance fee: 25,000
School fees: 60 - 65,000
Laptop fee: 70,000
Accommodation: 10,000(boys) 11,000(girls)

Total: 165,000 - 171,000

The students have expressed their discomfort with this to no avail. They are of the view that some have laptops already, some say that they can get a nice Laptop with just 40,000. Yet the case the case still remains "No laptop fee, no clearance in UNN"

The SUG on their own have not done a thing concrete to reverse this. That's the summary of the status quo in UNN now.

Here are some screenshots:
I'd suggest you forget the SUG, organize yourselves, get a good lawyer, and sue the school. If they want to increase tuition fees, they should be transparent about it instead of covering their nonsense with an illusionary Laptop fees for freshmen.

Is this funny? Am seriously shaking my head for you.
The matter here is so serious that don't know what to even say. I know some people are happy about this. But let me tell you the truth. If care is not taken in Nigeria. Very soon, Nigeria will colapse. Our politicians think they are wise. One day, the masses will be able to fight this ill, wicked and stupid politicians calling themselves our leaders. Suffice to say much about the wasteful lifestyles of some of our useless politicians. We aall know that an average politician who doesn't do half-quarter of what a nurse or doctor does ,will receive more than One hundred and thirty thousand naira (130k) in a week-either as a bribe or as a result of money paid from invisible contract he just won-to now pay this same amount monthly is difficult. Doctors and Nurses need to be renumerated heavily because wether we like it or not they are the most important body in any society. Without them ,believe you me,50% of people living would have been dead by now. Not to even mention the fact that their work is tasking and strenuous. Most Doctors and Nurses hardly sleep in order for you and I to sleep and have a normal life ahead.
Like seriously, our Country Nigeria needs serious and dedicated leader who would always wake up to the masses' complaints . A leader who would not just sit in Aso Rock and be spewing immaterialistic statements.
The part of your submission that I agree with the most is that politicians are grossly overpaid, and which is the root cause of many ills in the Nigerian society.
If Nigerians would be paid according to their work morals, I bet a lot of people will be earning the 5000 as proposed here. And that includes the pastor mrs queen Elizabeth duchess of edinbonyi Agwu herself that came up with this ridiculous percentage of paycut.

Weimar Germany was never made up of Germany, Russia and Poland. Germany was Germany, while Weimar Germany was bigger than the Germany of today, it never contained the two other countries. Germany though lost a relatively big chunk of its territories to both countries after WW2. The territories lost to Poland include Pomerania, Silesia, part of East and West Prussia, while they lost part of East Prussia to the USSR (today's Russia).

If the Ilaje people living in Okitipupa call themselves Ilaje, perhaps they are in the better know since Ilajes actually share boundaries with Okitipupa. You probably do not know that Okitipupa is an Ikale town.

Since you worship Imalokun (Olokun) and Aiyelala in Benin, perhaps I can claim that Bini people are actually descendants of Ilaje people if I were to be intellectually lazy like you.

Thank you so much for this piece. I have really been touched. Yes, it's true that about single tax and the tax reduces as you marry and give birth. I'd look up the links and books you recommended. One last question if you may, I tried searching but couldn't get a definitive answer.
Please help me rank the following countries from low to high in terms of taxes.
Switzerland, Germany, Canada, UK, Australia, USA.
VIELEN DANK.
Hello, I can only comment on countries (Germany and Ireland) that I know their taxes.
However, if you allow me to give you just one advice. I would advice you, if you are looking to take up employment, to not use Taxation as a yardstick to decide where to go. These countries may have different percentage of tax, but the difference is at the end of the day very minimal. Taxation is not a simple arithmetic, and if it says you're going to be taxed 40%, it does not mean your whole salary will be taxed at that percentage. It's not Nigeria where government collect tax without considering the expenses the person incurred in the course of fulfilling the terms of the job contract.
TravelRe: NIGERIANS IN LONDON The Never Told Stories by Ilaje44(m):

Thanks.. Appreciated.. Would look up the Canada option.
Yes there are engineering jobs, getting to the very peak, as in ability to boss the Germans is my fear.
Yeah.. Health care is best here in the world..
And by moderate taxes, you mean 40 percent is moderate? The tax here is higher than in Canada for example.
Hey, if you know your onions, you don't need to "boss" over anyone. The respect will come naturally even though one can never have only admirers regardless if it's Germany or any other place in the world.

Regarding high tax, like I said before, the tax regime is actually very moderate when you do cost and benefit comparison. You get something for the tax you're paying. Besides, you don't get to pay 40%, because you would be earning a lot to be taxed at that percentage. The German tax system is very progressive which means you pay more when you earn more. 40% is called "Spitzensteuersatz" because it's the highest percentage of tax you can pay, and only a few people get to pay that.

At the end of the year, you're required to do tax declaration, and you can always set off the cost of transport and some other cost against your tax liability.

If I remember correctly, to be taxed at 40%, you have to earn above €75000pA. You equally have some kind of tax credit. The amount of tax you pay is also influenced by your status. If you're single you pay naturally more than a single father, or a married person, or married persons with children. As you can see, the German tax system is not simple, but it's very moderate.

You can read more about the Tax in the "Einkommensteuergesetzbuch" (EstG) which you can get in the library of your school. Make sure to get the one of the current year to be up to date.

If you can read German, this wiki page (https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einkommensteuertarif) explains how to calculate income tax in the German speaking countries of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
TravelRe: NIGERIANS IN LONDON The Never Told Stories by Ilaje44(m):
Obiwannn:
Well from the detailed analysis you gave about the UK, I thought you were based there. Well, I am currently doing a Masters in Engineering in Germany, and although I would love to work here as the place is very orderly as you mentioned, I feel I would easily make it to the very peak of my career in another region like the US, Canada or Australia. Then again, there is the language barrier, and the heavy taxation of residents which the German economy thrives on.

Well, if you're doing Engineering, you have a very good chance of landing a good job in Germany. With a German master degree in Engineering, Canada out of the three named countries might be the best destination. I know that Canada does organise a kind of job trade show. I once attended one with a friend in Frankfurt/Main.

Regarding taxation, I think Germany has a moderate tax regime. Though the social charges are quite high, but the health care is quite elaborate.

Nice post. I have heard many people say that about Germany. But when you consider that Germany has a better immigration law, where would you rather immigrate to? I feel it's because the Germans are not used to blacks bossing over them, that's why this discrimination exists
Well, you are not far away from the truth. When Germany used to have colonies, they were known for their brutality as colonialist. And they lost all colonies as a result of World War I. So it's not false that they are not used to "blacks" bossing over them.

Regarding the immigration law, I do not think Germany has a better immigration policy. Infact, the political discussions in Germany has always been dominated by the argument that Germany is not a "classical" migration country like the USA, Canada, or Australia, Argentina etc. to name just a few.

If you're an Engineer, and a very good one, and you have a choice between Germany and the rest of Europe, I'd always suggest Germany. You have a very good career chance as an Engineer or a person who is endowed in the handworks.
