Couldn't resist the urge to ignore this. Incidentally the same pole position Image123 is latched on to

The idea of Hell english word according to Greek mythology original greek word Hades is that ONLY bad people end up there (i.e. no good people ever end up in hell)

The idea of Sheol to the Jews is that bad people & good people ended up there, however they were separated by a chasm or gulf

Hell is a makeshift once and for all translation for Hades, and Hades is the absence of a better word translation of the Hebrew original word Sheol

The translators should have stuck with Sheol instead of trying to translate it

So what's your response to this: Did good people, at some time, ever end up in Hell?
the Bible versions talk of Jesus soul in hell in Acts. where did you get this idea?

frosbel: Some beautiful quotes from eternal torment champions.

Image123 will be proud of these wonderful , kind and godly men.

"In order that the happiness of the saints will be more delightful ... they are permitted perfectly to behold the sufferings of the damned. ... The saints will rejoice in the punishment of the damned ... which will fill them with joy."
--St. Thomas Aquinas

"The happiness of the elect will consist in part of witnessing the torments of the damned in hell, among whom may be their own children, parents, husbands, wives and friends; ... but instead of taking the part of their miserable being, they will say 'Amen!', 'Hallelujah!', 'Praise the Lord!'"
--Rev. Nathaniel Emmons (1745 - 1840)

"You are going to see again the child ... that was condemned to hell. See! It is a pitiful sight. The little child is in this red hot oven. Hear how it screams to come out.... It beats its head against the roof of the oven. It stamps its little feet on the floor of the oven. ... You can see on the face of this little child what you see on the faces of all in hell - despair, desperate and horrible."
--Rev. J. Furniss, in "Tracts for Spiritual Reading", a popular booklet for children (late 19th Century)
i don't follow men like you religiously do. My posts speak the Word. Your posts show endless links to men's thoughts and ideas, go figure. blackmail champion, Jesus remains eternal torment's chief champion, "there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth"

truthislight: why use the word "hell" in english?

Is it an instruction from the bible that the equivalent english word for Sheol and Hedes should be hell?

Who gave the command that it must be the word hell?
this is quite thick. Do you have an idea what it means to TRANSLATE? i've already asked you but you could not answer, What is the english word we can translate 'Hades' to? You know next to nothing about translations, the learned ones did the translations, if you are not happy with it, give us your own and stop fumbling. Why did they not just leave all the words in greek or hebrew or latin? What is the meaning of Hades to you? i gave a post that showed what the greek knew/know as Hades, frosb said it is wrong. he hen proceeded to post the same thing i said and called it the real meaning since it is his post. Quite ludicrous if i may say. So what is your own version?

Hades noun (Concise Encyclopedia)
Greek god of the underworld. He was also known as Pluto; his Roman equivalent was Dis. Hades was the son of the Titans Rhea and Cronus and the brother of Zeus and Poseidon. His queen was Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, whom he kidnapped from earth and carried off to the underworld. Stern and pitiless, unmoved by prayer or sacrifice, he presided over the trial and punishment of the wicked after death. His name was also sometimes used to designate the dwelling place of the dead, and it later became a synonym for Hell.
Good now you are talking....You will agree with me that in the same way cutting your hair and beard is tied to motive, so is tattooing tied to motive. There is nothing wrong with tattooing in itself. Do you see my point now?
Nah, i'm not talking oh. i was just making a comment on the Lev 19v27 passages' backdrop that it was a ridiculous and irrelevant passage. That passage is the only passage in the whole OT that staightly says to love one's neighbour as one's self.
Lev 19:18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself: I am the LORD.
That is the great commandment and Jesus reckoned with it. It may be quite hasty or dangerous to dismiss anything in that passage carelessly.

FXKing2012: Pls stop quoting old testament and the Mosaic law; we dont live in the old testament neither are we under the law. We live in the new testament and we function by grace. But for obvious reasons I dont expect you to understand this.
On
Lev 19:27 Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.

Just wanted to make this comment for the records, and to set things straight if possible. i am UTTERLY persuaded that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Word of God, and Leviticus 19:27 is the Word of God.
Psa 33:4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.
Psa 33:11 The counsel of the LORD standeth forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

The Word of God is right, if anything is wrong, it is you. that we do not fully understand a passage or portion of the Word of God does not make it meaningless. i speak with respect to the backdrop that followed and was before the above quote, suggesting that the passage is irrelevant and ridiculous. i may be wrong on what the verse means but a careful CONTEXTUAL study and comparison with the whole of Biblical revlation show that the command was given in the Spirit of the believer been separate from the world.
2Co 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
A NT passage actually saying to TOUCH NOT! The context and Spirit says it all though, lemme not delve into that too much. Similar passages to Leviticus 19:27 are given below.
Lev 21:1 And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto the priests the sons of Aaron, and say unto them, There shall none be defiled for the dead among his people:
Lev 21:5 They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.
Isa 15:2 He is gone up to Bajith, and to Dibon, the high places, to weep: Moab shall howl over Nebo, and over Medeba: on all their heads shall be baldness, and every beard cut off.
Jer 16:6 Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them: nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them:
Jer 48:37 For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped: upon all the hands shall be cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.
Eze 7:18 They shall also gird themselves with sackcloth, and horror shall cover them; and shame shall be upon all faces, and baldness upon all their heads.

All of these passages refer to the superstituous practice that was popular in that environment/society. The shaving was connected to superstition. They were shaving for superstition, to mourn, and this is what Lev 19:27 was against. We are not to be superstituous as believers today, or join devilish cultures and tradition with our christian life. God still commands us today to not love the world, and to be blameless and separate from sinners. today, some folks make marks on their bodies for protection, or as juju, or to avert tragedy when a family member dies. These practices still remain things a christian should not engage in.

The writers of the Bible used and translated Hades. The real greek Hades as seen above is of course not entirely what they meant, sinners are not going to pluto the son of cronus and brother of zeus, but it is the picture of what they meant. Jesus and the apostles freely used 'faulty' translations of the Bible without pointing fingrs and name calling, and childish wrangle about word meanings and phrases not in the original or earliest. What a man needs is the Spirit of God in his heart, not earliest manuscripts or concordance and endlesss versions on ipads. The letter killeth, it is the Spirit that gives life. Ask the pharisees, they understood hebrew and greek and watched the whole thing live sef.

How did I manage to miss reading this brilliant truthislight post angry angry

Don't you just love reading that

I love you truthislight however God loves you more

Image123, you should be flabbergasted by now

There is no english word of Hades

You either invent a word in English for Hades or borrow an English word for Hades.

Most translators did the latter, borrowed Hell for Hades

Some translators were honest and put a footnote that Hell actually is or means Hades

"What is the Greek equivalent of hell?"

Hmm. Well, you can carefully or guardedly say Hades.

Took the guardedly position because there is more then the eyes see on word Hades.

The meaning of hell is a place where the unrighteous or wicked are placed in suffering with burning fire

# I wouldn't be surprised if you fish out Luke 16:24 and try waving it my face as a trump or winning card
Neither you nor tislight's quote answered the question. Hell is the ENGLISH word, Hades is greek, Sheol is hebrew. Have you bothered checking the dictionary, any dictionary? What is the Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa word for Hades? iguess you'll also say Hades.

truthislight: Hell is not a Hebrew word.

On what basis are you reverting Hell to Hebrew?

However, the word Hedes means grave and the word sheol means grave,

sheol is a hebrew word while Hedes is a greek word meaning the same thing in both languages = grave.

So, in translating the bible From Hebrew to Greek, the corresponding word for Hebrew Sheol is Greek Hedes.

However, the word Gehena is reference for fire, but Gehena was a refuse dump sustain by fire outside the walls of Jerusalem.(definitely not an underworld) as such symbolic since those that were reference to being put there were never put there literally.
Peace
so, what is the english of hades? what is the Greek equivalent of hell? what is the meaning of hell?

The idea of "hell" does not exist in the Hebrew vocabulary or sphere of life so as a result there is no Hebrew word for hell

Sheol and Hades are similar in place or location and in meaning,

Sheol or Hades is a place where both the righteous and the wicked end up in after death but separated by a gulf

Sheol, is in Hebrew language or Hades is in Greek language

It is safe to say Sheol is Hades and vice versa

Hell like similar imports into Christendom, such as Yuletide etc are myths from other people's cultures

Sheol or Hades and hell are different kettle of fish

The english word hell is not a good render of the word Sheol or Hades

because the righteous and wicked end up in Sheol or Hades albeit separated by a gulf

however supposedly only the wicked end up in hell with no righteous present
what is hell? Jesus the righteous' soul was not left in hell, recall?

You're a 100% correct, it is the Spirit of Truth that does guide one in separating false teachings.

Faith in any misleading translation does no one any favours

All Christians worth their salt are theologians

and would as directed or prompted by the Holy Spirit employ whatever means is necessary using lexicons, concordances, dictionaries and what-nots against false teachings or deception
Christians are expected to exercise their faith in God, not in any translation, true or false.

BTW evil men and deceivers will wax stronger and stronger, deceiving and being deceived. I'd rather concur with this Bible position than rub hands in glee because some folk says he likes my post 100000000 times. it. is God's Spirit that can truly teach us along with our willingness/attempt at honesty and sincerity. All the concordance and lexicon na wash and are likely to further confuse you except God just mercy for you and you take heed.
anyways, I'd rather a sheep for a Christian and the simplicity that is in christ than some full brain who has nothing in the heart. All your study study na head. you need God's Word written on your heart. if its written there you need no Greek, Hebrew, or Latin concordance. All those tools are very very very very unimportant to the normal Christian life God requires.

Use resources like lexicon, concordances etc etc; of course in-conjunction with the Spirit of Truth

to cross check the accuracies and genuineness of translated words, texts etc of each or whichever bible version used

and use to confirm whether or not the original Hebrew or Greek sentiments, intents, fact, aim, intentions etc were carried through.

Put the bibles and teachings through sieves

This will separate false teachings and doctrines.
lexicons don't separate false teachings. faith does a better job. There are many doctors of theology who are not even born again.

Image123, my dear bro, the "having or burying ones head in the sand" stance na wa ooo.

" . . . make we see, or keep shut" is an ostrich-person refusing to face reality, the truth or accept facts.

Avoiding hearing the truth, especially when ignoring the truth, potentially could be dangerous, is not healthy

The word of God in its original Hebrew or Greek texts is unique (i.e. it is impossible to have an absolute translation)

The reality is that the bible is not exempted from error

because the various bible translations were done based on the widespread theology at the particular translating time or also based on individual religious beliefs and theory

so the need to speak, plead, or argue in favor of using resources like lexicon, concordances etc etc of course in-conjunction with the Spirit of Truth

to cross check the accuracies and genuineness of translated words, texts etc of each or whichever bible version used

and confirming whether or not the Hebrew or Greek sentiments, intents etc were carried through.

Every Christians should be putting bibles through sieves

This will separate false teachings and doctrines
(e.g. like the introduction of phantom words like hell for Sheol and Hades, among a lot more others into the bible)

# There are a lot more than the eyes see
bring your own translation and let's sieve it. stop all the lazy armchair criticism. Lexicon and concordance didn't fall from Heaven either BTW.
