Kobojunkie:Saudi Arabia has actually witnessed a fall in income per capita compared to 1979. The idea that the Nigerian Govt can engineer a diversification of our economy by spending our reserves is pure fantasy.Again,we have already done this before. The Volkswagen,Peugeot,Leyland, ANAMCO et al were all built in the 70s as a way of diversifying our economy.Where did all that lead? The best way to bring about diversification cost nothing-Govt policies that encourage foreign investors to invest in different sectors of the economy.Foreign investors won't be encouraged by a depletion of the reserves Again,I have asked, where has all the money we have spent already gone?Shouldn't we account for what was spent before spending more? |
@Mazaje Do you realise that we have been through this process before? We have a large foreign reserve because we have a spike in oil prices, that spike in oil prices won't be permanent. The question is,how do we manage when oil prices fall. Back in the 70s,we had a similar scenario. Then, they did what you are advising they should do now,the Govt spent the money. . . . and what happened? By 1980,we were borrowing money as oil prices fell and we ended up going cap in hand to the IMF,enter SAP,with a resultant $32 bn external debt and an economy that had shrunk to 1/5th its 1979 size. What have we learnt since then ?Apparently, people like you haven't learnt anything .You propose that we should do the same thing. . . .spend our oil windfall, what is the point of history if you don't learn from it? Our problem is not spending money, our problem is how we spend money.Believe me,many politicians would love to spend our reserves.Since 1998,we have seen Govt expenditure quadruple.Has there been a commensurate spike in living conditions? No!Yet,your advice is. . . . lets spend even more!!Keep spending. Lets find out how and where all the previous spending was utilised. We saw a huge spike in spending on power infrastructure, what is the result?Your solution is. . . spend more. Our biggest problem is that most Govt revenue(85%) comes from oil.Oil is volatile in price. If you have most of your revenue from a resource which can change rapidly in price(oil was $9 p/b in 99 and $90 p/b today) you simply have to save for when the inevitable price fall happens. This is the case, most especially when you have past experience in this and when you seen an upsurge in Govt expenditure already which hasn't achieved much. In the analogy I used,an individual who makes a living from a crop that is price sensitive will save for the inevitable period when there will be deflation. This is why human beings have savings.Unless you suggest that the desperately poor shouldn't save. |
@topic How is your bank savings helping you? Why don't you stop saving and spend all your income as you earn them. |
Arsenal have 6 away games in their remaining 9 league games this year.As Jackal noted, they haven't won a game outside London yet in the League.Let's see after all those away games where Arsenal will be |
debosky:Its an away game. What happened to your "total football" United will meet tougher opponents than this.At the end, getting an away result like this suits Utd more than Arsenal.Of all the top 4 teams,Arsenal would have least wanted a draw prior to the game |
debosky:Someone here predicted a home victory, when the home team sneaked a late equaliser,he pretends to be delighted with just being top of the League https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=16992.msg1644922#msg1644922 The only people who will actually benefit from this are Liverpool and Chelski, especially the latter.I'm sure they will break into the top 2 by December. |
I thought Arsenal were supposed to be playing the best football on the planet. If this was against Milan at the San Siro or Barca at the Nou Camp,we will get a better game. Not over yet,its the second half that is the main menu |
I was watching Andy Gray make a pertinent point.Who are Arsenal's match winners? Perhaps,Adebayor and Cesc, beyond that, who is going to score goals for them?Forget the Sparta Prague game, over the last 3 League games, they haven't found it so easy putting the ball in the net. United,on the other hand,is full of match winners-Rooney,Tevez,Ronaldo and Giggs. . .even Vidic is a potent goal scoring threat. All I know is that its going to be a great game.Just hope theatrical diving from the Gunners doesn't spoil the game.Winning penalties is one thing they are good at.Take away their penalties and their goals scoring record from open play in the League is not particularly wonderful |
I didn't see the reserves game.I don't think Gary is ready yet, even to sit on the bench. If Evra,Rio,Vidic and Brown are fit,we can have O'Shea and Pique to deputise. We need attacking players on the bench, not defenders. The boy has been out for months,is it 7 months,so I can't see how he is prepared, never mind starting,to be on the bench after his first game in 7 months |
@Debo Razorr's undies don't stink, trust me.I have been sniffing them and they smell good to me. . . .problem is,I felt a bit high sniffing it Moving to footie, heard you suddenly developed a nervous breakdown on account of an upcoming game.Chill. . . what will happen on Saturday if you start panicking now? The game is yours to win.Its a home game and you have a point to prove-that you are serious title contenders Heard Evra might not be fit.It will be a wonderful game though despite the presence of a multitude of divers in the Gunners Camp ![]() |

somze:What about Drogba playing for Fullham? You no remember that one? ![]() |
@Somze You are a complete wolly!! Firstly, you said Zidane and Edgar Davids played for Torino. Juventus and Torino are 2 different clubs, just like as Arsenal and Spurs.People never seem to have the gracefulness to admit that they erred and stop making a fool of themselves.Dude, you are the King of All Schmucks-Zidane played for Torino indeed. somze:If you had been to Italy, you dummkopf, you would know the difference between Torino and Juventus.Juventus were never called Torino,so saying that Zidane and Davids used to play for Torino is ignorance in the extreme. Maybe Lazio used to be called Roma, after all there are in the same city and share the same stadium, what about Inter and AC Milan-same city and same stadium. Idiot! |
@Jackal Look out for the "flying" Gunners looking for penalties We are going to give them as much problem attacking wise as they will give us.Have they ever met the equivalent of the super trio-Rooney,Ronaldo and Tevez? The best attacking force they have met this season were-Torres,Kuyt and Voronin for Livepool and Berbatov and Keane for Spurs. Its going to be a fantastic game, can't wait @A40 Are you saying Utd and Chelski only deserved 9 penalties in total last season. If Arsenal were fouled 12 times, were Chelski fouled only one third of the time and were Utd fouled only less than half of the times?Does it mean that both Utd and Chelski,in 76 games, were fouled less than Arsenal in 38 games? |
somze:Unless of course you awarded an extra 2 penalties for United.United were awarded 5 penalties last season, presuming Ronaldo took each one,(I think Saha took some)that won't still constitute a third of Ronaldo's 17 Premiership goals. You can bend facts as much as you want but you can't bend mathematics. Talking about bending subjects,so Juventus were called Torino and it is right to say that Zidane played for Torino? See person I dey discuss footie with, typical Chelski fan,as ignorant of his football as you will ever see. ![]() |
HNIC:Between a point in Oct 2004,up until Nov 2005,United were not awarded a single penalty decision in the Prem. That means that in one year of football,no United player was fouled in the opposition's box It takes United 2 and a half seasons to be awarded the amount of penalties Arsenal get awarded in one single season. For all I care, all Arsenal's penalties may be justified, every single one of them, but it stretches my imagination to believe that United are fouled 2 1/2 times less than Gunners,a whopping 150% difference. ocho cinco:Opinions can be made without facts but you can't make 'factual' statements without facts |
somze:Martin Samuel of the Times was noting last week that every single club in the Prem gets shady decisions.Does that mean that no one who supports a Premiership club should talk about shady decisions? The impression you gave is that United gets more than its fair share which is incredibly naive. Ronaldo scored a third of his goals from shady decisions?Coming from someone who claims Messi is not having such a good season or that Zidane played for Torino So the 5 penalties Ronaldo took last season,(which by your maths constitutes a third of his goals ) were all shady? In effect,Utd did not deserve a single penalty throughout the season after all the few they were given were shady One penalty was awarded against Utd at OT,I'm not sure about others but I don't think Arsenal conceded a penalty decision in the League last season. @Doyin13 Conclusions drawn without resort to facts are just plain twaddle. |
@Dayokanu I remember Amoroso because he eventually turned out a huge dissapointment. He ended up at Dortmund at some point, don't know where he is now. What undermined Serie A was financial problems at the beginning of the 21st century. Parma used to be a strong team-Cannavaro,Thuram,Buffon et al.(those 3 made a pact that none of them will leave until Parma wins Serie A )-When Parmalat(Parma's sponsor) collapsed, the 3 were on their bike .That was the best defensive partnership in the league, there was another guy,an Italian,I have forgotten his name, they used to play 3 at the back.Fiorentina was also a solid team then but the club President ran into difficulties. The most spectacular collapse was Lazio. They were the Chelski of the 99/00 season-Sven literally bought the title but it was a welcome relief from the Juventus/Milan stranglehold. I didn't really see it coming for I had seen Lazio demolished in the Rome derby by Capello's Roma(that was when I decided to start supporting Roma in Serie A,I had a team for each major league).Montella and Delvecchio destroyed Lazio (the latter was the world strangest footballer. . . . he seemed to have no technique whatsovever )The previous season,Sven's Lazio surrendered the title despite leading by 7 points with 4 games to go(Sven's rep for raising hopes only to dash them was sealed for eternity,Man City take note ) AC Milan won their last 4 games while Lazio lost 3 of the last 4.Talking about spectacular finishes to Serie A,remember 2001/2002? Hector Cuper(The Universal President of the Associaton of "Nearly Men" and Inter Milan were in pole position going into the last game against Lazio.Despite the fact that Lazio fans wanted Lazio to lose,Inter still lost 4-2,Lazio fans were booing their victory I think Lazio fans were worried about Roma winning,Roma finished second behind Juventus eventually.I still think the Serie A is the best league in the world because the quality across the league is more balanced than in England today.Yes,the top 4 English sides are probably better than the top 4 Serie A sides but a league is made up of 20 teams not 4.There is greater quality across the Serie A.Just look at Milan now,I believe they are in 13th place alongside Lazio.Probably,Ancellotti is getting complacent or is it Il Duce(S.Berlusconi) who doesn't want to spend big? PS:The 3rd guy in the Parma's super trio was Sartor |
somze:Quit talking nonsense.United have the least penalties awarded of any of the top 4 teams going back the last 3 seasons.Liverpool and Arsenal tend to have the most.Last season,Arsenal had more penalties awarded than Man Utd and Chelski combined and Utd has once gone through an entire year without being awarded a single penalty |
@I-man On the contrary you do need a bit of pace in the centre of midfield
So if Scholes was available we should have put him on the bench since he lacks pace?Giggs will perform better in that role than Anderson. The midfield is not lacking for pace with Nani,Ronaldo and Hargo.Anderson might have performed well with Porto but a Premiership game is a different proposition for someone who just arrived in England. PS:I'm now regreting Fergie's failure to sign Freddy Adu.The boy looks like a really good prospect |
I started following Serie A closely in 97/98 season, that was when Juventus stole(again) the title from Inter.Inter had the best team but "mystical" refereeing decisions didn't help. That season,Udinese overperformed with Alberto Zaccheroni as manager-he won the Scudetto the following year with AC Milan. Staying on the subject of "World Best Manager",I always wondered why Marcello Lippi struggled outside Juventus. He did well at Napoli but was a huge disappointment at Inter.Despite his World Cup victory,I still rate him lower than Trappatoni and Fabio Capello. It was rumored that he was offered the Valencia job but he declined to accept, informing club officials to check back on the 17th of November since there is a chance Donadoni might lose his job if Italy don't qualify. Speaking of the good ol' days.Does anyone remember when an 'unknown' Dynamo Kiev came to the Nou Camp and trashed mighty Barca 4-0? |
I heard Rio didn't train yesterday because of a recurrence of his groin injury. He should make it for the game if its not too serious but he could be facing a long absence after that game. If Carrick doesn't make it,I would rather prefer Giggs in that central role, alongside Hargreaves.Anderson would be overwhelmed in this sort of game.Giggs has the experience and guile to play that role.In the centre of midfield, his diminishing pace won't hurt him that much because he won't need it. A big problem is how to curb Arsenal's strenght from their right-handside-Eboue and Sagna.Evra would need protection and I would prefer Nani plays in front of him and is instructed to drop back and provide support. We should maintain our 4-4-2 formation. |
c'mon guys try and watch calcio a bit and see great passing technical skill and tactics at its best. pirlo does anything with his passing. he is not fast but look at italy vs germany the first goal, milan sevilla the two goals.Someone once said that the problem with people's perception of issues is that many people are "rationally ignorant.I include myself."Very few can afford the time to comprehensively familiarise themselves with the subject that they debate.Demands of work,family,e.t.c How many people have time to watch the Prem,Serie A and La Liga and still get to see the UCL? Yesterday,I managed to watch 6 hours of football Most people barely manage to just watch the Prem and they base their conclusions on that alone, along with the UCL.Any player outside the Prem is pretty much irrelevant, the best player in the Prem easily becomes the best player in the world unless someone, like Kaka last season, puts in a virtuoso performance against an English team in the UCL.Other than that,Serie A,La Liga and Bundesliga players don't figure in people's thinking |
Rijkaard could use Ronaldinho centrally,in Deco's position, and play Messi and Henry either side of Etoo.Xavi and Yaya Toure anchor the midfield. |
Well done Gab,Spanish journalists confirm that they rate Iniesta higher than Fabregas.Another blind oaf,Luis Aragones, rates Iniesta higher than Fabregas.Blind oafs full Spain sef. . . . either that or some Gunners here are plain blinkered |

I noticed his striking resemblance to Baron Greenback in Danger Mouse and on further enquiries,my suspicion was confirmed. My fear of Chelski knows no bounds now that I know who Avram really is ![]() |
Avram Grant will definitely get the better of Wenger. The man's pedigree transcends football. Here he is in his former role as a character in "Danger Mouse".
