Omenani:
I have pondered the same question as well. However, keep in mind that in North America, the type of slavery that was practiced, was very different from the slavery practiced in Latin America, Caribbean and South America. Even though the systems were similar, you had different ways in how they were incorporated. Plus, the demographic factor played a part as well.

In the Caribbean, you had a small white planter class lording over the majority black slaves. These black slaves interacted with each other at greater rates and were able to keep many aspects of their culture. Plus, the whites in the Caribbean and Brazil did not try to suppress the culture as vigorously as the whites in North America did.

Remember that white slave masters requested that there slaves be a mix from different regions from Africa. How can an African keep his culture, if he doesn't have no one who knows his tradition or language? In Cuba and in Brazil, you had plantations in which one major ethnic group from Africa was the predominant culture of the plantation. They could continue speaking their language and practicing their culture.
Yes, I know. Unfortunately, they never taught us that in school. A lot of the information that I learned about slavery wasn't even from school. Personally, I felt that the teachers that I had did a very poor job at teaching students about slavery. I always went out on my own to seek information about slavery and trafficking of people. I was very drawn to slavery in the Caribbean and the Latin Americas. In fact there was a documentary I came across about 3 years ago about black Mexican currently living in Mexico. I think there's a exhibit as well. If I can remember the name of the documentary I'll post it here.

This is what section 249d of Criminal Code says

d) every person who, in any public place, conducts himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace, shall be deemed idle and disorderly persons, and may be arrested without warrant, and shall be guilty of a simple offence, and shall be liable to imprisonment for one month.
Ok, so if that is the case then I suppose the police officers are in breach of this law?

Yet another reason why nigeria is a failure angry angry

You cant cite privacy when you are a public official grin

Politicians/Policemen/Law Enforcement have ZERO privacy because we the taxpayers, pay their salaries. grin

This  case is particulary dangerous because the officers were armed and could have killed themsleves or someone, common sense should prevail in this matter but it WONT because Nigerian courts have nothing better to do but take bribes, hold innocent people in jail and let muderers and political thugs go scot free.

Cheers at 50 years of independence, bondage wink

Failures.
Yupp, 50 years = EPIC FAIL!!!

safariman:
Simple, the law needs to change and we shouldn't be comparing taking pictures of a simple common person on the streets with that of the police.  If the law is changed and allow pics of the illegal checkpoints, taking N20 bribes etc, the police may change their ways
If only it were that simple. They would never pass such a law because people are too busy enjoying their gravy train bribes.

I'm not here to support the Nigerian police but their decision of taken the guy to court serves him right. If he had gotten away with such an awful act, other Nigerians will imitate him and that doesn't sound good for a law abiding citizen irrespective of his status.
Irresponsible? Yeah right. Now suppose this was a photo of the officers accepting money? Honestly, the reason why a lot of horrid crimes exist in Nigeria is because no one speaks out. People tend to be blasé and then the behavior of staying silent becomes normalized.

@topic: I see nothing wrong with what the dude did. I take pics of the idiotic police officers here in New York. I once caught some police officers slamming a high school student to the ground the arrest her. I made sure I took pics right in front of them. I wish I could say I was in shock but I really wasn't. It was three huge officers tackling a kid. The kid was barely 5'2" undecided.

Ok, madlady and SA Goddess, I started the natural thread. It's called "The Natural Mixtress--Natural Remedies And Solutions".
FashionThe Natural Mixtress--Natural Remedies And Solutions by InkedNerd(op): 4:07pm On Nov 15, 2010
Hello ladies and gentlemen. This thread is totally open to everyone who is interested in caring for their bodies using more natural or holistic methods. Everyone is welcomed to add recipes and alternative methods for various beauty issues from skincare to hair. Everyone is also welcomed to give reviews on natural products and homemade products. I'll go first.

Over the weekend, I washed my hair which I recently cut. I now have short natural hair. The product I used to wash my hair was black soap. I rarely condition my hair so I go straight to moisturizing. Here's what I do. When I step into the shower, I saturate my hair with water for at least 5-10 minutes. Waiting those 5-10 minutes, allows the water to loosen up the dirt or build up that may be on the scalp. After the 5-10 minutes has passed, I take my "natural shampoo" e.g. black soap, castile soap, mud based cleansers, etc. and apply it to my hair. After my hair is fully cleansed, I apply castor oil in my hair while its still wet so it absorbs very well. I will admit, the castor oil had a not so pleasant scent so I add a little lemon oil to dull the scent of the castor oil. After that, I'm pretty much done. For those of you in the know in the natural hair community, I am currently doing a castor oil challenge.

I didn't ask if there was a glass ceiling, I KNOW there is a glass ceiling. Its not like its a bed of roses for women, but with all these generalizations, you'd think all men are having a ball, cheating all the way and all women are just passive, submissive at the receiving end of the abuse. If you'd posted the above initially, there would be nothing to argue about.
I never stated that it was a bed of roses for men. Like I said before, the life of any Black man is never easy, and yes I know not all women are passive and submissive but for the most part Nigerian/African culture encourages women to be submissive and passive whether its through present day Judeo–Christian beliefs or preexisting beliefs cultural/indigenous religious beliefs. Look, I'm not tryin' to knock the Black man down but it just not an easy life as a woman. Yes, some men stupidly cater to some idiotic demands of some woman but for the most its just not easy.

Generalizing is lazy. Most naija men would chuckle bitterly if someone told them society was "bending over backwards" for them. And there are tons of women at the top in every sphere of Nigerian life. Is there a glass ceiling? Sure. But there are also Naija women that are home-wrecking gold-diggers. I could lazily generalize that to all Nigerian women too.

"walking on the backs of their women" is nonsense, and you know it. If we were talking about Saudi, "pride in holding women back" might even start to make sense.
Lmao, fine call it what you like. Call it "lazy", call it "nonsense", if those words suite you then good for you. Nigerian culture tends to cater more to men than women. Let's not act as though there isn't a huge double standard within our culture and many other parts of African culture. As for the "home-wrecking gold-diggers", last time I checked, it takes two to tango. I'm sure those men involved with these supposed "home-wrecking gold-diggers" knew what they were doing when they decided to step outside of their marriages. I was watching a Youtube video recently about a West African girl who was talking about an argument she had with an old friend of hers. This friend of her's said to her "Behind every married man there is a woman and behind her is his wife", the guy who made the comment argued and used it as a means of justification a man's infidelity and said that women should just deal with it and accept things for what they are and that that was just how African society was, mind you, there were guys who agreed with this guys and encouraged what he was saying. Now if a woman were to take on the same idiotic notions of that fool, then the interpretation and reaction of such a comment would be would totally different. I'm am in no way saying that the life of a Nigerian man is easy. I know it its not. The life of any Black man is never easy. I have a father and I take note of how hard he works to attain everything his has accomplished in life but I'm not gonna sit her and act as though there aren't issues here. Just because we [Nigerian women] may not be as restricted as women in Saudi Arabia doesn't mean that we aren't restricted at all. As for you asking if there were a ceiling, yes there is a ceiling. You may not see it but it is certainly there.

I personally don't mind waves just as long as they are naturally how the person's hair is. When I see guys going out of their way to go to barber shops to make their hair wavy, in the back of my mind I feel as though their suffering from the same "good hair"/ "bad hair" complex that many Black women seem to suffer from. I don't mind cutting of the hair, braids, or loc'ed hair. Those are fine with me, just as long as they are clean and well kept. I'm very big on hygiene when it comes to personal care and the body.

The most interesting part of the book is the fact that most of the people claim not to have heard the word Igbo but spoke a similar language. They all viewed themselves as different tribes.
Can you please tell me the name of the book you read this? I always wondered why there were some many Yoruba influences in the Americas than other ethnic groups. When I was elementary school when we'd learn about slavery, I realized that a lot of the countries they mentioned that had slaves were exported to the Americas from West Africa were people of Yoruba decent.
