The Independent Corrupt Practices Commissions (ICPC) Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta, has reiterated his view that “stealing is not corruption.”

Speaking to a team of The Nation on Sunday in Lagos at the weekend, Nta explained that his commission would fare better if there was a proper understanding of the word corruption.

According to him, the controversy emanating from the definition of corruption is as a result of a long entrenched misunderstanding of the vice.

“If you don’t know what you are fighting then you might be busy fighting other things and thinking you are addressing the problem,” he stated.

The ICPC chairman, who has been criticised in the media for saying “stealing is not corruption”, stated that from the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (ONCAC) and the ICPC Act, the first item that falls under corrupt practices is bribery in public and private offices.

He backed up his views with Articles 15 and 16 of UNCAC and sections 8, 9 and 10 of the ICPC Act.
He listed what is considered as corruption under Article 19 of UNCAC and Section 19 of the ICPC Act as: illicit enrichment, trading in influence etc.

Explaining what he calls constitutes corruption, the ICPC chairman said: “If I walk into your office and I say that I have been sent by the president that this contact you are about to award must be awarded to me and now drop his card or the president’s card on the table. This is also an offence under corrupt practice.”

Nta reiterated that the major function of the ICPC is to check abuse of office by public office holders and government officials.
Stealing, he said, falls under the criminal code and should be reported to the police.

That's not what inequality means. Simple: do not discriminate SOLELY based on gender. Nobody is denying that women are usually physically less stronger than men, but ---where strength is not the only criteria---there are several other qualities that determine whether a person deserves a certain position. Sometimes it might just be a woman and a person shouldn't be denied an opportunity or service just because of their gender. It's about treating people equally and with respect.

LEADERS of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) appear sharply divided on the fate that should befall the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, in view of his ongoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), sources close to the party have said.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that a stakeholders’ meeting of the APC, which held at the Presidential Villa, two weeks ago, was truncated as a result of the cracks in the top hierarchy of the party on the issue.

It was also learnt that while a number of party chiefs were of the view that the Saraki matter must be handled carefully so as not to cause an early implosion within the party, some were of the view that the Senate President should be allowed to carry his cross, while others were of the view that the ongoing trial could speak negatively about the party.

It was gathered that while Saraki’s matter was billed for discussion at the Villa meeting, which was presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, some leaders, who were in attendance and who did not want the matter resolved by the party, sent out messages to some media, intimating them Saraki was going to the Villa to beg APC leaders.

A source in the know said the messages sent to some media outfits practically took the wind out of the sail of the meeting and largely culminated in the failure to reach any concrete conclusion.

“The party is largely divided on the Saraki issue and I can tell you this is affecting things down the line. It is affecting the way senators of the APC are also reacting to things. The Villa meeting was set up to ensure that the party could extract some commitments from Saraki and find a political solution to the issues at stake, but those opposed to a resolution apparently moved fast.

“They started sending messages to some media to indicate that Saraki was going to the Villa to be the APC even before the Senate President left the National Assembly. He got to the Villa late, but even before he left the chamber, his office had been bombarded by questions from several media. The meeting could not come to a concrete solution that day because of the antics of the leaders, who leaked the meeting, even though the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari also contributed to the meeting’s failure,” a source said.

Sources also confirmed that the division at the top echelon of the APC was also affecting the unity of its members in the Senate.

While the anti-Saraki forces are pushing for his replacement with another senator, who will have the backing of the party, senators loyal to Saraki are firming up together in case of any untoward development.

Loyalists of the Senate President, under the aegis of the Like Mind Senators (LMS), are insisting that even if the APC insists on removing Saraki, his supporters and the senators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would determine the emergence of the successor.

Sources said the LMS was relying on its number, which currently stood at 32 out of the 58 senators of the APC and the backing of the PDP senators, whose number stood at 45 right now, pending the conduct of some rerun.

“We just hope that reason will prevail and this matter would be resolved amicably. The APC needs to learn from recent history of the assembly. When former President Olusegun Obasanjo orchestrated the removal of Senator Adolphus Wabara, believing that he would not support the third term agenda, the senators rallied round and elected Senator Ken Nnamani, who was not his choice and the Enugu senator contributed to the defeat of third term,” a lawmaker said, on Sunday.

Although its hard to sometimes (as in this case) tell the cost of certain things just by looking at them from a distance, but, knowing Buhari's austere character, I'd be surprised if they cost anything north of $300. They certainly don't look like $500 shoes, and if anyone paid that much for them then they should ask for a refund.

Wailers need to stop wailing unnecessarily. This is not what opposition is about. Personally, I think the PDP is dead and buried; just because of the dull sets of minds that have taken over the promotion of the Party. They have no idea how to energize their base or recall aggrieved former members, so they have resorted to idiocy. If they had any sense they would've hijacked President Buhari's anti-Corruption message and forced him to pick another mantra. They could've easily suspended those within their party with pending court charges, thereby giving the impression they were cleaning stable, were serious contenders in the business of governance, and that they would have no hand in the pilfering of Government funds. Common Sense: President Buhari's Government came to be because Nigerians got tired of the Politicians openly stealing their money (and it will only become harder to steal from Government coffers as Nigerians become more aware of their rights). They could've then forced this Government to pick another topic. Instead, they just come up with the most ridiculous antics you can think of all in the name of "Opposition". A brighter set of Nigerians need to form a Political party, because if these are the type of "Youth" that the country has to look up to, then theres serious trouble on the horizon.

The court session is confirmed over as the so called masked witnesses did not appear again. Meanwhile journalists, including our crew members were not allowed in the court room. We got a first hand information from our lawyer, Barr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor that they have filed a motion for stay of proceedings, which means that Justice John Tsoho will not be presiding over this very case again, owing to his compromising stance and previous rulings.

Either you got fed false info, or Mr.Kanu's Attorney is a total dolt. This will be the second or third Judge you're asking to recuse themselves from this case. Keep fishing. What you don't understand is that in cases like this--- where the obviously guilty client is being condescending and defiant---his case will keep getting passed to the toughest Judges; they can see through his antics. Do you know how many thousands have passed through their courtroom with worse attitudes? You think Mr.Kanu's behavior is new? The Court is tired of Mr.Kanu and his best bet will be to beg for mercy instead of going through the whole process of a trial, get found guilty, then sentenced to the harshest sentence possible.

The judge has inadvertently admitted dat any fight against this course is directly a fight against d celestial bodies.

I think you and your supporters misunderstand what the Judge was saying.

He basically told the Defendants that "Except they did not want to be Judged by man then there's nothing else he can do because their complaints seem to be against every person in Authority they've come across since the commencement of this case". Remember, that this same group already had a Judge recuse himself from proceedings after allegations of bias were raised by Mr.Kanu.

The Judge's pronouncement shouldn't be viewed as a victory for the Defendant. Actually, if I was him I'd be worried because it seems the Judge is starting to get irritated by his antics.

Why are Nigerians so Rowdy, disorganized and disrespectful? Look at the court environment where someone accused of trying to destroy the country looks like. How will the people respect the power and authority of the court when family members, well wishers, and others who have no legit business in the court are allowed to get so close as to be taking selfies with the Defendant?

There's a reason we don't allow Cameras in Federal Court in this country; this is one of them.

The Nigerian justice system needs to get itself together.
