sleek417:I'll say it's partly Atedo's fault really, given the fact that he went ahead to obtain universal banking licence, rather than stay within his primary constituency of investment banking. He might have bitten more than he can chew as IBTC did not go under, mind you, they were only forced to go into terrain they were unprepared for and not specialized. The acquisition of universal banking licence and subsequent inevitable merger with Chartered Bank, forced them into an unfamiliar terrain of commercial banking. It was difficult competeing with the Zeniths, UBAs, UBNs and GTs of this world that already had strong footing in the commercial banking market. They struggled, but it was just difficult. He had no choice than to leave the scene. |
You still have not told me why we have to outlaw Universal Banking lisences. Why can we have both Universal Banks and licences for Specialist Financial Institutions. Such that both can co-exist in the economy just like in every other developed economies?
How many times do you want me to say this? This si why I choose who I argue with on NL. Universal banking operates with specialized banks like Agric banks, industrail developemnt banks etc. What universal banking licence permits you to do is to engage in both commercial and investment banking activities. Phasing out universal banking means a Zenith bank cannot use its licence to operate Zenith Capital, Zenith asset Management etc again. Investment banking has different arms[wealth management, stockbroking, financial advisory, corporate finance (M&A) etc]. The specialization CBN is talking about here is not that of agric or industrial banks(that are known as specialized/development banks) but distinction between commercial and investment banking. That is the area universal banking covers, reversal of which means both will now be separate. If a bank wants to be an investment bank, it will obtain licence for that and commercial banking becomes ultra vires for it. Ditto for a bank that obtains commercial banking licence. With universal banking phased out, commercial, investment and development banking will all still exist in the economy, but we know where A bank belongs and where B belongs. |
Is it impossible to have specialized financial institutions working along side universal banks?
Universal banking licence essentially permits you to go into any aspect of banking., basically commercial and investment banking. A GTB needs no special licence to establish Guaranty Trust Asset management Ltd, an Afribank needs no licence to have a subsidiary as Afri capital Ltd, a Zenith bank needs no licence to run a Zenith Capital Ltd, with consolidated reporting. The terrains, and even the skills, depart markedly. The investment banking terrain is more volatile and require tighter regulatory supervision. Pre-Universal banking, we had them separate. We had merchant and investment banks handling investment banking, and commercial banks doing their own business too. Until late 90s, investment banking in Nigeria was not that developed. Universal banking, in the main, merges investment and commercial banking under a single licence. But it does not cover specialized financial institutions like Agric banks, industrial banks etc. So with or without universal banks, specialized financial institutions are not affected. |
Seun:In addition to what okeymadu has said, the advent of universal banking made our banks become jacks of all trades. No more specialization. Every bank with universal banking license began to go into various areas of banking, which required specialized skills. Most of them went into investment banking, gave loans to their investment banking subsidiaries, invested heavily in stocks, when the stock market went on free fall, they lost billions, hitting the whole group. It goes on and on. But like someone said, if universal banking is to be reversed, then the 25 billion capital base needs to be reviewed. Specialized banks don't need that much. This was the beginning of teh fall of IBTC. They obtained universal banking license without operating it(they remained investment banking institution). But by virtue of the fact that they had idle universal banking licence, they were captured by the 25 billion capital base, meaning they had to merge as well. The struggled to merge with Chartered bank and acquired Regent bank. They couldn't get their feet in commercial banking, they began to struggle. The man was left with no option tahnto sell teh bank to Standard bank of South Africa. Not even the coming of the continental giants has been able to help much as they still struggle in commercial banking. This, I think, is why Atedo Peterside will never forgive Soludo. |
Drogba's Chest is better than some players' two legs. |
The only area of Difference I think is temperament. Quite temperamental in real life, but hardly gets annoyed on NL. Save this, my Nairaland personality is the same as real life personality. |
FBS:Don't you think that versus Congo, we had some foreign based players, and still, Congo is a better footballing nation than Niger. So Niger defeat is most embarrassing. |
Olaolufred:Co-signed. |
I honestly do not think Amokachi has gathered the necessary skills and experience to coach a national team. He appears to be more of action, no tactics. His jumping up and down, and turning prayer warrior(Vs Zambia ) and other dramas only make him overshadow Amodu. He is not tested.I was discussing with a friend a couple of days ago and he argued that NFF only gave Amokachi coaching job so as to earn something for a living after squandering his millions (recall the jet) he made in England in 1990s. It was even said said he begged for the job. It's difficult not to agree with this. Siasia is way ahead of him. |
Another reason to silence those that claim we should do away with our Europe 'big boys' and start using players in our local league in senior SE. Ordinary Niger republic, dem no fit beat. |
illusion2:Anybody is free, very free, to take the narrations here with even pinch of garri. It's not compulsory to believe them. I don't have any problem with anybody not believing but it behoves me to explain what I know about to somebody that asks. And I swear by God almighty that what I said here(at least the one I witnessed myself) is absolute truth. You are free to take them with a pinch of salt. My sincere advice to my Muslim brothers and sisters is that please know about the Jinn. Read about them from authentic Islamic texts. If you know the activities and workings of the Jinn, most of these mysteries will not be strange to you. Ever since I know about the Jinn some 8 years ago, no mystery scares me again, be it scaring dreams, mythical happenings like seeing a dead person, hearing strange noises, etc. My kursiyyu is just too potent than to be scared of those things. As regards somebody being possessed by reciting Qur'an, either the person did not know what he is saying or you did not hear him well, and most likely, the person has mixed up reciting something arabic with Qur'an. You can never get possessed by reciting Qur'an. If anything, reciting the Qur'an drives away the Jinns and make them uncomfortable. This I have witnessed amny times and Nairalander Bindex, a non-Muslim, also narrated witnessing one, as quoted earlier. Another non-Muslim Nairalander, Kiwi, narrated his own too, using Qur'anic verse to drive away Jinn. Qur'an should however not be mixed with Arabic. Not everything written in arabic is Qur'an, and many ignorant Muslims that consult deviant alfas that are no better than herbalists fall victim of this. I have seen this as well. These alfas give these people something written in arabic like ya gabazalu, ya jiroro etc, fooling them that they are God's special names known only to them, that they should chant them x number of times in the midnight etc. In actual fact, these names are arabic names of some jinns. So after chanting these ya this ya that for x number of times as directed by their misguided alfas, the Jinns appear to them, may possess them. Some misbehave, some enter a state of trance, some get some devilish powers. Being raised in a local Muslim community, I know this happens very well. I have warned many people against it. I have seen people fallen into it. This is the most likely the case illusion saw. Chanting something arabic is not teh same thing as reciting Qur'an. Jinns appear to people and deceive them he is this, he is that. A very close family member was disturbed by Jinn some 8-10 years ago, telling her in dreams that he is God, that Christianity and Islam are the same thing, that God has cancelled the 5 daily prayers, that she has been made a prophet etc. And the person absolutely believed all this, until I observed, having read a book on Jinns shortly before then, that her case was most likely a case of Jinn possession. I suggested it to the family and we invited authentic Jinn scholars, not teh deviant alafs, and Qur'anic therapy was administered on her and she got well. What if the Jinn appearing to her had told her that he was Jesus, and Christianity is the way, that would have been her preachings and you would have thought she actually saw Jesus. This is why I personally disregard all those dream-based conversions and visions. To me, that is the case with the Jesus-seers too. On the Krishna and co exorcising, yes, anybody can exorcise. There are various sources of getting exorcism powers. There are evil sources as well. This is why in Islam, it is totally forbidden to use any method to cast out the jinn except the one taught by Qur'an and Sunnah. Some Muslim alfas, in the name of exorcising, use all sort of devilish methods, like killing animals, using blood, some no better than the herbalist methodology. Some even call on other jinns to cast out the possessing jinn. All these are absolutely non-acceptable in Islam. In islam, the end does not justify the means. The means is as important as the end. Don't use evil to cure evil. Don't consult Jinn to cast out Jinns. I don't have anything to gain arguing with you. I'm absolutely convinced about the efficacy of the prophetic methodology in curing Jinn possession, not least witnessing one. |
dominique:Being research-based, it's gradual and may take a week before the 50-man list is out. |
FINAL LIST THE PLATINUM CATEGORY 1, Seun: Without mincing words, the founder and CEO of Nairaland, Seun Osewa, is one guy you can't ignore, like him or hate him. Perhaps, he should be regarded as the father of online foruming in Nigeria. Despite the mushrooming of online forums in Nigeria almost everyday, Seun's NL remains the most attractive, lively and humorous web forum in the country, not to talk of its been the largest. His vision is commendable. 2, Mukina: Mukina is another engine room of NL, akin to Chief Operating Officer(COO) in most organizations. Here since 2006, Mukina, despite being a non-Nigerian, has mixed freely with Nigerians. She is unarguably, and even officially, the second most powerful personality on NL. She enters our list of NL legends. 3, Debosky On Nairaland since April 2006, Debosky is arguably the most sought after, most respected and most assertive Nairalander after Seun. His leadership skills is also phenomenal. Little wonder he was promoted Super Moderator a couple of months ago. Welcome Debosky to NL Hall of Fame. THE GOLD CATEGORY: CURRENT LEGENDS 4, Akolawole:: One of the earliest Nairalanders, being a member of the 2005 set, Akolawole dwells more in the sports section, and assumes an elder stateman stature there. He is one of the encyclopedia of NL history. 5, Davidylan: Joined November 20, 2005. David(Ph.D) is unarguably one of the most controversial Nairalanders, known for his fierce debates in religion, politics, and foreign affairs sections, as well as romance and sports sections. He is one NL you just can't ignore and he has been around since 2005 and doesn't look like quitting soon. He was recently voted religion section poster of the year 2009. He makes our list. 6, Olabowale: Joined June 04, 2006, Alhaji Olabowale is widely regarded as the father of Nairaland Muslims. Widely respected, even by non-Muslims, he has been on NL since 2006, actively doing what he knows how to do best: defending Islam and answering questions on Islam/Muslims. Few people will disagree withe me that Alhaji Olabs(as he has been nick-named) is a NL legend. 7, Dayokanu: A member of the 2006 set, dayokanu is better known for three things on NL. 1, Criticism of English football 2, Criticism of flamboyant pentecostal pastors 3, Criticism of Muslims for crises. Like him or loathe him, Dayokanu is one Nairalander one can hardly ignore. He has been consistent with this since 2006. 8, Spikedcylinder: Spikey, as she is fondly called on NL, is another lady worth recognising as NL clocks 5. To those in the hot politics, sports and religion sections, she might not be known, but she assumes an iconic stature in entertainment sections(Romance, Celebrity, Fashion, TV/Movie etc). To think she was my immediate junior in the varsity, but by far my senior on NL, having been here since 2005. Welcome Spikey into NL Hall of Fame. 9, Texazzpete: On NL since 2005, Texazzpete is only averagely known for the simple reason that he is not the controversial type, yet he is one Nairalander that has consistently contributed immensely to making NL what it is. He is more known in politics section. 10, Loma: Many people may not know him, simply because he chips in his contributions only to serious issues. He is not a 1000+ poster, but when he drops his comment, you see class written all over it. The Ife, Texas, Rice, Harvard, and MIT-trained Loma is an IT guru in one of the world's largest multinational oil corporations. He is one of the earliest Nairalanders, 2005 set. Welcome Loma to NL Hall of Fame. 11, 4Play:. On NL since 2006 and has been consistent. 4Play is another very versatile Nairalander that roams the Sports, politics and entertainment sections. He is no doubt a NL legend. 12, Afam Another early bird on NL, having been around since 2005, Afam has consistently made his mark debating politics on NL. Five years on, Afam is still active in that section, and he doesn't appear quitting soon. 13, Osisi: Like Tpia, many Nairalanders may not see eye to eye with her, but there is no denying her place in NL Hall of Fame. Having operated many usernames, we don't know when she joined NL, but it surely can't be after 2006. She is one of the most popular Nairalanders of all time. 14, iice: There are threads and threads about some Nairalanders, but no thread on any NL personality has ever reached 10 pages. Guess what? A thread on iice reached 63 pages. Check out ''iice: Can I meet you'' thread. Although little may be known of her outside the entertainment sections, but there is no disputing the fact that iice is one of the NL legends, not only because she has been around since 2006, but also because of her consistency over time, came rain, came sun. 15, Jakumo: One of the Top 5 most popular personalities in NL politics section since 2005, Jakumo is especially known for his trademark jaw-dropping bombasts, and he has been consistent with it five years. His peculiar style and consistency with it qualifies him as a legend on NL. 16. Sauron: Some people came, but after some time, they fizzled out. Some came, made impression within few months, but couldn't sustain the steam. Count Sauron out. Started as Jackal in 2006, but now operating under the username Sauron. Sauron has stood the test of time in NL sports sections. Four years, and still waxing stronger. One of the 'area fathers' in NL sports section since 2006. Ignore them at your peril. 17, Thief of Hearts: TOH, as she is usually called, is another nairalander that has shaken and moved the forum since 2006. She may no longer be as active as used to be, but there is no denying the fact that TOH is a NL legend. She dwells more in entertainment sections. 18, Rokiatu. On NL since 2006 and highly consistent, she may not be that popular outside of entertainment sections, but there is no denying the fact that she is a silent legend. 19, Otokx: On NL almost since inception in 2005 and still vibrantly present. Otokx runs the most consistent personal diary thread in the NL blogging section of Journals and Diary since 2006. He dwells more in the politics section and he is one of the most respected voices in that region. 20, Grafikdon: He is a 1 post per day Nairalnder, but with his popularity one will think he is among the 30-posts per day posters. Joined in 2006 and still strong in the land, Grafikdon is one of the pillars of the hot NL Politics Section. 21, Becomrich: It is just difficult to ignore Becomrich in the compilation of all-time greatest Nairalanders, much as one tries to. He may not be popular for the right reason, his style and passion are phenomenally legendary. He is one of a kind. The Canada-based Unilorin graduate of 'electricity engineering', has been on NL since at least 2006, under various IDs. If you want to have a good laugh on NL, tune to the becomrich. 22, Twinstaiye: Surprise inclusion, isn't it?! Yes, not all legends are popular. One of the oldest nairalanders, one of the earliest Nairanders having joined NL when NL was less 150 days old, one of the few Nairalanders that have their real pictures in their profile and one of the most mature Nairalanders. Twinstaiye is a silent legend on NL. He makes our list of 50 greatest Nairalanders of all time. 23, Nike4luv: One of the very few members of the early generation on NL that are still around. Most of her generation have left or no longer active, but she's still active and dropping comments, especially in the forum games section. Welcome Nike to NL Hall of fame. 24, Lalaboi: Lalaboi has been consistently present on NL since May 2006, and looks stronger by the day. His turf are forum games, Music and European football. He is also an active advocate of NL on facebook. Welcome lalaboi to NL Hall of Fame. 25, RichyBlack: One of the founding fathers of NL Politics section that is still around active, even though not as involved as he used to be before. He is an active contributor on International Politics discourse. He joined NL in 2006 and remains one of the leading voices in Nairaland Political discussions. 26. Orikinla: : Aside entertainment sections(which include sports and romamnce sections), Politics is another area that naturally attracts people. This is understandable given man's love for sparkles and glitz. But none of these hotbeds is Orikinla's turf. He does his things most in an area some people never even know exist on NL. Welcome Orikinla, the NL in-house literary guru who makes the NL Literary and Writing sections tick. 27. Dr Kitaun: Not sure when exactly he joined NL given his metamorphosis from different, though similar, IDs. He is one of the 'area fathers' in Sports sections who you ignore at your own peril. He is at home both in European and Nigerian football, and he is one of the strong men that made NL sports section a hotbed for analysis. 28, Famous Funmi: Everything about her is controversial. Even her inclusion here will generate controversy, as many people will say such a personality that do more of fighting cannot be regarded as a legend. Where to put her is also generating controversy. Current or past legend? But one thing that cannot be taken away from her is that she made NL interesting. She operated many usernames, Earthmama, Hotfunmi, Osun Amazon, Redhotchic, Pepperspray, and most famously, Deepzone. Some people are also convinced that she's behind the username Aloy-Emeka now, we leave that to speculators. It is difficult to complete the list of movers and shakers of NL in the last 5 years without including Funmi Deepzone. Welcome Funmi into our NL Hall of Fame. THE SILVER CATEGORY: PAST LEGENDS 29, Hot-Angel: She was reputed to be one of the hottest Nairalanders iin her generation. Joined NL when the forum was just 103 days old and rocked the forum till 2007 before quitting NL. She made a single post in the whole of 2008, and no post at all in 2009, signifying the exit of one movers of NL in its early days. 30, Latoya: Between 2005-2008, there was a lady called Latoya on NL. Joined before NL was 4 months old, Latoya was most active in forum games and made NL tick in that golden generation. 31, Dejiolowe: Strange, isn't it? Yes, that was one of the guys that rocked NL in 2005 and 2006, when NL was in its formative years. He still buzzes in once in a while. He was a respected voice on NL at the time, and some of his contemporaries who are still around still mention his name with fondness. 32, Gamine: Although Gamine is still around, at least she was here till Feb 22, she is not as vibrant as she used to be between 2006-2008, she therefore fits more into this category. New generation Nairalanders may not know her, but she was one of the Nairalanders that made this place tick some two, three years ago. 33, MC Usman: He was on NL for just 10 months, between Feb to Nov 2008, but there was hardly any active nairalander that did not know him then. At a time when North bashing was the in-thing in NL politics (Biafra is the in-thing now. God save us!), he was practically the sole voice of the North on NL then. Based then in Monrovia, Liberia, MC Usman officially quit on November 30, 2009, when he was moved to Congo on official assignment. A thread was opened to bid him farewell. 34, Sistawoman: She joined in 2008 and took the romance sections, nay the whole of NL, by storm. Perhaps the most open Nairalander ever. She is no longer as active as she used to be and came here last in January. 35, Windywendy: So legendary that, two years after leaving, people spoke of her in glowing terms. She was on NL between 2006 and 2008 and her knowledge of stock market was legendary. Practically turned into stock market consultant on NL 36, Layi: Layi shook NL in its formative years. He was here between 2005 and 2009, and alongside Dejiolowe, will be remembered for making NL hot in its first two years in particular. THE BRONZE CATEGORY: EMERGING LEGENDS 37, Kobojunkie: Joined in 2007, and assumed a collosal stature in politics section within a short period of time. One of the few female that are very active in the ever hot politics section of NL, where she struts it out with men in debates and analyses. She has been absent on NL for a couple of months and we hope she will soon back. She is gradually working her into NL legends. 38, Aisha2: Another female Nairalander that rubs shoulders with men in the politics section. She is not known for fierce debates but contributes to issues. She is also known for her humanitarian services outside NL. She also frequents romance and other sections. She is gradually making her way into the list of all-time Nairaland legends. She joined in 2007 39, oyb: Oyb is a member of the 2007 class, my set. He is one of the most versatile Nairalanders, as he is always almost everywhere, except sports. He is another encyclopedia of Nairaland. His sense of recollection is phenomenal and he is better known for recollecting, referencing and digging out past threads when debating, and has exposed many inconsistent liars on NL. He is rising to join the class of NL all-time legends. 40, Ibime: A member of 2007 set, Ibime is no doubt one of the most brilliant nairalanders of this generation. His contributions are class. Only a few landers can match his knowledge of politics, economics, finance, sports and general issues, despite being a Mathematics graduate. His arguments are scientific, easily quoting relevant statistics while debating, especially politics and economy. Like Loma, he is another proof that Nigerian First Class grads are worth their salt. 41, Ajanlekoko: Joined NL in 2006 and would have been on the category of established legends on NL, but he did not become active until 2008. Ajanlekoko, alongside TKB and a few others, are the vein through which NL career section's blood flows. He gives useful insights on work management and people fall on one another to have his advice. Call him an in-house consultant, and you may not be wrong. He is also active in Politics and Barcelona-related threads in sports section. 42, TKB417: A member of 2007 set, it is very difficult to reconcile how the always-on-the-move investment banker juggles between his work and NL, given his ever-presence on NL. A die-hard Man U fan, few people will disagree with me that TKB deserves a spot in NL list of legends. 43, Biina:: Copy Ibime's citation up there and paste here. Change Ibime to Biina, 2007 to 2008, and maybe delete the last sentence, and you have Biina's citation. Welcome Biina to NL Hall of Fame. 44, DualCore: 7-post per day DualCore, formerly Sawyerrken, has been on NL since December 2007, and remains not only very active till today but also very useful. He may not be active in high tension sections like Politics, Sports, Religion and Romance, he assumes an iconic stature in Dating and Meeting zone as well as technology sections of phones, webmasters, computers etc. Dualcore is hereby inducted into our list of '50 Greatest Nairalanders of All Time' under the Silver category. 45, Ibkaye: With more than 15,000 posts , representing more than 85% of her post, in just one section, I don't think any other lander can beat her in number of posts in a single section. Yet, she's not a local champion as she is widely known in virtually all entertainment sections. She joined NL in 2007. Welcome Ibkaye into NL Hall of Fame. 46, MrCrackles: Joined NL in 2008 as Brash and within a very short period of time, became very famous forum-wide. He is not only the most consistent member of NL, he is also the most ubiquitous, with presence in virtually every thread. He is also one of the most popular Nairalanders. Many people have criticized his use of curse words, including his famous signature, 'It's Brashy you naughty person'. He is not known for making long posts. For his consistency, unique style, and popularity, Brash deserves a place in NL Hall of Fame. 47, Ifyalways: Ify joined NL in 2007 and has made her mark on the forum with her quality contributions, especially in the Culture forum, where she was voted poster of the year 2009. 48, Clemcykul:: It is never by the number of posts, otherwise somebody like Loma would not have made the list, but with 24 posts per day, 90% of which are in one section(Jokes), Clemcykul deserves a look. Welcome Clemcykul to NL list of emerging legends. 49, Sagamite: A member of the 2008 set, Sagamite is one of the most versatile nairalanders, bestriding the Politics, Sports, Romance, and Forum info (Nairaland) sections. He is one of the few Nairalanders, nay Nigerians, that are very passionate about Nigerian football. He is also a grammar and style critic as evidenced in his thread on Nigerian journalists. 50, Doyin13: Doyin joined NL two days after the forum clocked 2. March 12, 2007, to be precise and has not looked back since then, with activities usually in Forum games, politics, sports, and the entertainment sections. FINAL NOTE: By this, we have come to the final list of 50 men and women that made Nairaland tick in the last five years. Obviously, we could have omitted many deserving people, even as the inclusion of some people might even not be agreeable to some people, but like any other Social Sciences report, maximum objectivity may not be guaranteed. This may be the limitation of this work that took us 14 days(March 15-28, 2010). I thank those that brought my attention to some deserving people. Although I'm a Nairaland official, it should be noted that this is not official Nairaland position, but an independent effort by a member that wants to add value to Nairaland and makes this place more organized and coordinated. NEXT is interview with the these men and women but before then, turn to page 4 to nominate your 5 GREATEST NAIRALANDERS of all time, preferably, but not necessarily, from our list. Thanks |
NL will be half a decade old this year, and it is necessary to celebrate people that have made Nairaland tick, even though virtually everybody has, through his/her own part, contributed immensely to making NL what it is today - Nigeria's largest, most authoritative and most lively discussion forum. Some have been here since the inception of NL, some left along the way, some joined years later, some joined only recently and made great impact, some are even controversial personalities, but the fact is they just cannot be ignored. I'm therefore taking up the challenge of researching and compiling the list of 50 Nairalanders that have moved and shaken this forum since its beginning in 2005. We will have the following categories: -The Platinum Award: Exclusively for Admin and the two Super Mods -The Current Legends: Those that joined in 2005 and 2006 and are still around -The Past Legends: Those that joined in 2005 and 2006, made great impact then, but are no longer that active NL -The Emerging Legends: Those of 2007/2008 set but who are showing signs of greatness The thread will also feature interview with the legends, which will be posted here. It promises to be fun and entertaining. While I continue with the research, I invite Nairalanders to join me in this project by suggesting the names and profile links of the people you think the caps fit. Stages -Compilation of 50 man list(still ongoing) -Selection of 5 greatest nairalanders of all time -Interview with the legends Thanks UPDATED MARCH 2011 As NL clocks 6 and this thread clocks 1, we want to induct 10 more people and have 60 MEN AND WOMEN THAT MOVED NL 2005-2011 So begin to nominate 1, Anybody who deserves to be there but was omitted last year, or 2, Anybody that, though didn't have the records to make it in 2010, but has done enough between March 2010 and March 2011 to make the list now Start nominating. List originally drawn in March 2010, to recognise 50 Legends of Nairaland as the forum clocked 50. Now updated to 80 as Nairaland clocked 8 |
I hope I am not one of the rebel non-indigenes being issued warning, being a strong critic of their governor since 2007: http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/guest-articles/just-how-evil-is-bafarawa.html ![]() But thank God, I don leave their state for them ![]() More seriously, being a follower of Sokoto politics, I think I know the genesis of this issue. In April 2009, the current governor was unseated by his political rivals, led by ex-governor Bafarawa of DPP, for, I think, not satisfying the period one needs to be in a party before being eligible to contest on the platform of that party. The opposition won in courts and the governor was unseated. The court ordered a re-election. PDP fielded the sacked governor again and he won and returned to his seat. The opposition went to court again, claiming the sacked governor was not eligible to recontest. And tomorrow (Tuesday, 16/03) is the judgment day. Feelers have it that the judgment may be in favour of opposition and the governor may be sacked again, and prevented from recontesting. This has led to anxiety in Sokoto state, and that, I think, is why the so-called youths loyal to the governor are threatening fire and brimstones before tomorrow's judgment. The anger on non-indigenes may not be unconnected with people like us, non-indigenes, who have voiced out our reservations against the governor. I was a victim of the Sokoto political imbroglio in 2007 and still pass comments on the state politics till today, two years after leaving Sokoto. Ditto for a couple other non-indigene regular commentators on Sokoto politics, whose comments appear critical of the curent governor. Maybe, that is why the heat is now being put on non-indigenes in the state, as the criticisms of the current governor appear to be led by us non-indigenes, though operating from distance. You need to be in Sokoto to see politics of thuggery and area-boyism. |
You can't. It's the discretion of Admin and Super Mods. You may however nominate it for front page here: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-183675.0.html |

@IFY, We had an extensive discussion on Jinn, especially the evil ones among them, on this forum a couple of years ago. You may go in and read: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-209195.0.html |
I will appreciate if beyond this post we return to decorum and nip in the bud of this needless drift into exchange of insult. All contributors to take note. Thanks. |
I don't understand. . . . Because people are jobless and worse off the poster shouldn't demand what is by right due to him for his labour? These people work, work and work their asses off then CEO's like cecelia ibru and Erastus Akingbola would purchase 80 houses in dubai and jet for their pastors while the worker is paid chicken change and told "Don't complain". Tell me you don't see the stupidity in this!
Spot on. Most of the responses here are bewildering, if not nauseating. So this is what unemployment has turned Nigerians into. The poster knows his worth, he knows what he does, and he has every right to complain. Let's call Zenith bank for what it is: slave farm. Abajo, no wonder my friends there keep dropping their CVs for me taht tehy want to leave. A bank as big as Zenith paying 85k flat, no bonus etc, for a graduate is most ridiculous; even more ludicrous is not living to their promise of improving it after one year. I have a friend that has been there since 2007 but has not still in ET or what do they call it. By company rule, I learnt, after getting further qualifications, your pay rises, but one year after becoming a Chartered Accountant and submitting his ICAN certificate, nothing has changed. They keep bypassing their own rules and cheating staff. Zenith bank is a slave farm - period. Only the senior executives enjoy the system. I personally vowed never to work in a bank even before finishing University, and set a benchmark that I will never take any job that paid less than 100k, and later raised it to 150K minimum benchmark. Of course, effortlessly, I got, because I knew my worth. I, for one, can't take such job in the first place. The guy is free to complain. Meanwhile, Seun's comment here calls for some reasoning: Seun:Except if expressly stated in employment contract, promotion, as newly introduced into my own organization, is not done by the number of years you have spent doing the same work. Otherwise, it will just be by civil service where, after two years, you automatically get promoted to another level. Do you do extra work? Do you still do the same thing, and spend same time or have same output, you were doing when you were employed two years ago? If that is the case, then all I need to do as the employer, is to fire you and employ a fresh grad that will be able to do same job at the cost I was giving you two years ago when you were new, and I will save cost. After all, you are still doing what you were doing two s=years ago and you want to earn more money. This is teh employers perspective. |

Inna Lilahi Wa Inna Ilaehi rajiun ![]() Got the info from one of his children who called a friend yesterday. It's a pity. I've been calling Popsy, one of his subjects, since yesterday and no pick. Obviuosly busy with burial activities. Meanwhile, the Mod should move this thread to Culture or relevant section |
Obviously between Eto'o and Drogba. Drogba had a fantastic 2008/2009 season in Chelsea and also did well at teh NT. Eto'o also scored, I think 29 goals, In Barca in 2008/2009 season, but more importantly, netted a very decisive goal for his club in UCL final against Man U. That may make the difference. I see Eto'o winning it for the fourth time. |
My comment stems from this epistle: http://www.nigeriavillagesquare.com/articles/guest-articles/punch-editors-bombshell-on-corruption-in-the-nigerian-media-2.html If all the allegations levelled against top columnist and ED-Publications of The Punch, Mr Azubuike Ishiekwene(popularly known as Azu) by Mr Steve Ayorinde, immediate past editor of the newspaper were true, then there is serious integrity issue in Nigerian media. Some of the allegations: Azu using Punch to defend debtor Rockson Engineering "Beyond his(Azu's) partisan interest in how Rockson Engineering is reported in The PUNCH, Mr. Ishiekwene would later in October (when we had relocated to Magboro) again demonstrated his unprofessional interest in Rockson Engineering when he requested that I should remove Chief Johnson’s name and that of Prof. Pat Utomi (who was the Chairman at his book launch) from the cover of the paper among those prominent debtors whose names were released by the CBN. I had explained to him after calling me repeatedly that it would be unethical to do so, because not only were the two names mentioned but also because the debt being owed by Rockson ranked among the biggest and should naturally put him among those whose photographs would appear on cover. The ED Publications insisted that both men were friends of the house whose interests should be protected." Azu using Punch against Bi-Courtney "For yet a fuller account of the infractions committed by Mr. Ishiekwene while using Punch to fight Arik’s battles, I will also urge you to speak with the Chairman of Bi-Courtney Limited, who is an old boy of the Government College, Ibadan (GCI) like your good self. Dr. Babalakin, I am aware, has a “dossier” on how Mr. Ishiekwene has used the PUNCH titles to fight Arik’s war with Bi-Courtney over the concessioning of the old domestic terminal. There were many instances when the ED Publications came to me to push Arik’s position and agenda on the tussle. There were several other times when he bypassed me and directly called the aviation reporter and the Business Editor, often harassing and threatening them and goading them to be sympathetic to Arik in their reporting." Taking bribe from Fayose Mr. Ishiekwene’s romance with politicians of doubtful characters is as legendary as his false moral crusade on anti-corruption. But his short romance with former governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state had a twist of drama akin to that of Tafa Balogun. Fayose had never hid the fact that he gave Mr. Ishiekwene a cash gift of N1million in February 2005 when he celebrated his 40th birthday at his former residence in Omole estate and that Mr. Ishiekwene was a beneficiary of several contracts from his administration. However, their relationship went sour immediately Fayose was impeached and Mr. Ishiekwene lambasted him in one of his columns. Being loquacious, Fayose has said it to the hearing of many people that Mr. Ishiekwene was an ingrate and a false defender of the ethics of journalism. . . . . . and many more as contained in that letter to the chairman of Punch. For someone highly regarded as Azu, especially with his weekly preachings through his Punch backpage column, I am highly disappointed. I hereby formally delist him from my list of 'Nigeria's top Columnists' for failing in the morality and honesty question: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-325477.0.html I'm beginning to think twice before trusting these columnists again. They come up with fine analyses every week, criticizing government and the so-called corrupt people, whereas they do worse within their authorities. He even wrote a book he titled 'The Trial of Nuhu Ribadu', but if the allegations by the sacked editor are true, then he might not be better than the men behind Ribadu's trial. Azu may not be better than Dele Momodu, after all. From Abati to Azu, should we just be taking the messages and ignoring the messengers, or ignore their message with them? |
