Thank you for this detailed response sir. I actually started out with interest in building games, tinkering with C++ checking game engines like Godot and unity (this was around 2014) but I got discouraged because there wasn't anyone to guide me so I made alot of mistakes and had several burnouts which made me lose interest entirely. It was so hard to find a game developer then (even now it's still hard) as everyone I met was into web development. By the way Blueprint is somewhat similar to python and Lua right ?

I dont know zero about Lua , but python ,c++ and blueprint i know.

I find the trick to learning computer stuff in this modern day, is to use youtube and google and have a working example/tutorial that you are working on getting your hands dirty.

As for the programming languages i know unreal uses c++, Python and blueprints. However c++ is the fastest by far, if you gona write large game doing lots of fancy stuff like fortnight , then its mostly gona need c++ , else it will be slow and laggy. They way they advice is that Blueprints will be ontop doing high level stuff, and c++ under doing low level stuff, in short your blueprints will be controlling components you built from c++.

The challenge i face with unreal engine is that its too sensitive, its very powerfull and as result its not very user friendly. BY that i mean just building your code does not mean it will work when you hit play.

Also you have to be carefull when using c++, cause your code goes into the unreal editor, meaning your code can break unreal engine if you not carefull. When you clcik the editor to open, part of the code its running when opening up is your code, so do not be surprised if it crash before it even open. So you have to take baby steps when adding c++ code until you are comfortable with its behaviour.

So if you looking to write big complex games, you want to mix C++ and blueprint c++ cause its fast, blueprint cause its very powerful and makes your code easier to understand.

My strategy is to skill up very well, then collaborate with others to develop games, i dont think we are in the era when one person can write game anymore, unless its something very small like mobile phone games. Game development budgets is now rivalling movie production budgets.

Also the unreal Engine forum has people who help there, thier response may be slow in coming at times but quite often you get help.
And StackOverflow too is good for c++ questions , and even unreal engine questions.

I am new convert to game developer myself, coming from robotics etc.

So far i am finding there is good demand for Unreal Engine skills, its just about the most powerful game engine, the most complex and challenging. So its hard work, and as result there is demand for the skills.

Its the Game Engine that was used to develop Fortnight .

Skills required is C++ , but the game engine also has its own programming language called Blueprints, and Its got a whole ton of internal tools .

Think of game production like movie production , so that tools like Unreal Engine and UNity have a ton of tools that you have to learn for doing things like animation, NPC AI , and all kinds of graphics special effects .

The good thing is though there is a lot of tutorial videos on YouTube.

As a software engineer , i can tell you Being a Software Engineer gives more prospects and opportunity to be self employed than chattered accountant.

Both require someone who has no problem with studying , but software engineer has far better career prospects.
By that i mean technology in general sells more as a skill.

So if you like accountancy , then focus on accountancy/ business management software platforms and learn those, like SAP etc software

In my case my interest was robotics , and i had to learn electronics/some mechanical and software to be professional in my field.
But as i got older i could no longer tolerate the extremely racist working environment Europe, and decided to retrain to develop software for Games and AI , basically a career that i can do from home and find my own customers online which for gaming is many.

In my opinion as programmer for decades

You need performance which desktop has over laptop, more cpu power and storage
And mobility is also useful depending on your situation.

The role of the software developer today is learning software framework Platforms and using them to develop Apps.

The most useful frame works have more features which means more code, more files to compile, longer time to build the code, so here a desktop and very powerful one with lots of ram will give you access to more advanced latest software frameworks.

The laptop is good as second PC , and can also be useful for development alongside PC, you can even use your laptop as client for testing code running on Desktop.

But if you only have one pc as developer, Desktop is the way to go, especially if you gona work with things like Graphics and games.


At the end of the day best software means more code means more cpu power to build it, and try too get good cooling for the Desktop PC.
This will allow you access to build any software much faster, some of the Unreal Engine gaming framework code can take 30minutes to build, on laptop that will take hours.

Also do yourself a favour and don't try to develop software unless you have 2 screens at least, but more is better 3 is good number.
