It's very clear that some people here watch a football match through livescores.com and other football apps. Otherwise, you can't watch tonight's match and conclude that Messi flopped. I don't think that the plea of self-defence is available to accused persons in cases where it is evident that they had ample opportunity to control the situation. Now when the girls caught and overpowered the boy, the next logical thing to do was to ask him what his mission was. They should have also searched his person to see what weapons he had in his possession. Up till now I can't see where it was written in the story that he was armed. So what was the basis of killing him for?

Even if the dorm had a history of rape and robbery, it's still not enough to beat a male intruder to the point of death. Especially where the deceased cannot be identified for sure as one of the rapists who has made hits on the girls' hostel in the past. So why take such an extreme step in punishing the deceased? If they had handed him over to the school authorities after "roughing" him up a bit, that would have been ideal, and it would have been the deceased and not the girls that would have stood in the accused person's box in court.

In conclusion, they reacted to the intruder with unreasonable force and measure, and should be guilty of murder in my opinion. However, I also expect the Judge to be lenient in judgement considering the fact that this unfortunate event was set in motion by the deceased's trepass into their space at an ungodly hour.

The last time I checked, the law operative in Nigeria in this kind of situation is that you match an intruder/trepasser's actions and weapons ONLY with equal weapons/actions. You can't challenge an intruder armed with only a scissors with a gun and the plea of self-defense will still be available to you.

Ordinarily, the girls are guilty of murder under Nigerian law, unless they can establish that the deceased had a weapon capable of causing death in his possession at the time of the unfortunate event
